I saw that too and was wondering if my color was wrong. The sun was in my eyes as I was shooting and my three other shots of it had a lot of lens flare. Shot it pretty early in the morning, and it's back lit, so I think the colors are tweeked a little bit, but compare it to the beige (or ochre) El Cortez next door. Next time I'm downtown I'll take a shot from the other side with direct sunlight on it.

The Trump pic was clean glass vs. dirty glass. There were window washers on both sides. I've got more pictures to come tomorrow. I stayed at the Mandalay Hotel so I didn't bring my camera out to City Center. However, I did see it on my last day. That project is crazy big.

I've already said it once, but I need to say it again... Trumps "clean" glass looks amazing!!!

I had never really paid that much attention until today when driving into work... That bright gold (that most of us hate) when cleaned, is a much darker gold color... I like the building 10X more now...

Thank you. The best view of Streamline i've seen is from Juhl's webcam (yes, I said Juhl). They have an option that enables select different views of downtown thru a webcam. One option enables you to see the South side of Streamline. I think Streamline is the best looking building downtown.

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but from the bottom left corner of Hans Gruber's Trump photo, it looks like there was some type of protective liner on the inside surface of the glass that was just removed. It is definitely an improvement now!

There are two of those big Bellagio signs and I too have wondered the same thing. I assume they will likely move that Bellagio sign or take it down completely. However, that sign that is right in front of citycenter is the one that has the LED screen in it.

no- neither bellagio sign has an lcd screen - they both are regular pillar signs - the mandalay bay sign that is along the freeway has an lcd screen - according to the models and rendersing that sign right infront of citycenter will be taken down - the other will remain....

for some reason i was thinking that the encore was going to look a lot taller than the wynn. but when i saw it from interstate 15, they appeared the same. wynn: 614ft. encore: either 653ft from vegas today and tomorrow, or 631ft from wikipedia and emporis

encore is 631ft from what most are saying, Emporis can't really be trusted though because they say encore is just 48 floors when in actuality it has 52 floors

the swoop on encore is nearing completion as we speak, it should be done for christmas and all cladding should be done by the end of january i guess

Dec 28, 2007, 6:19 AM
I know this forum is about architecture but if we all love architecture here, and Las Vegas as a whole, we need to make sure the rest of the country understands what is really happening.

The Trump article has quite a few false statements. Also, there is much more to the story than what was reported.

Just an example...

"The answer will hinge on whether the people who put down $10,000 deposits during the boom years will now be able to come up with financing for the units"

People put down 20 PERCENT hard deposits, not 10 THOUSAND. That was WAY WAY back just to reserve. People are much more motivated to close when they have 140k down (on a 700k unit) as opposed to 10k. This should have never been reported wrong. The rest of the country sees this and says OMG Vegas is only taking 10k deposits now! Thats not true and harms ALL of us.

The main problem is in condo hotel financing right now. Not an over supply of condos.

"High-rise luxury condo prices are way down in Las Vegas, reflecting local and national housing trends. The boom times of the past few years, when developers flamboyantly announced one high-rise project after another and talked of Las Vegas as the next Manhattan, ended with a thud this year."

How did the strip end with a thud with projects like CityCenter selling 1.5 billion in real estate in 2007 alone? Have you ever ONCE seen the press report that? Rarely because its not doom and gloom.

CNBC (http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=515241273) did a pretty good job and so did CBS 2 (http://cbs2.com/video/?id=53268@kcbs.dayport.com). (see links)

Units have recently sold at The Harmon Hotel for over $2,400 a square foot. That is a fact. I know this because I sold two of them for over 2,000k a foot and 2,400k a foot which most likely is a new Nevada record.

How is Vegas slow when Elad just paid 34 million an acre and is building a $6 billion dollar project?

How is it slow when Nevada was once again just named the fastest growing state in the country and is adding 46k jobs in next two years because of CityCenter, Palazzo, Encore and Echelon?

Why would MGM MIRAGE assemble 108 acres on the north end of the strip?

Why do we have $30 billion in growth?

Thanks for clarifying Aaron. I did a double take when I saw that Trump buyers only had to place down a $10,000 deposit.

Vegas is a prime buying market right now and the architecture on a lot of the premier projects are amazing.

I was at the Strip over the holidays and began to see the arching rooftops of the CityCenter retail and enterainment district. All the bending steel to form the arcs that let in natural light to the building look fantastic. So does the wave-like resort casino and the cresent-layered Vdara driving down the 15 freeway.

Palazzo looked a little dated already compared to what's coming up. Walked all the way over there and it still wasn't open for the soft opening. Blah!

Aaron is right! people like me who put down 20% = over $200K on some units are not walking away.....out of 1282 units maybe 20 -30 small timers may have too but that won't make a difference int he long term. Someone will scoop those units fast and make a wise investment.

Soft opening 12/31

Soft openings are weird IMO. Many of the restaurants and other things are not yet open, yet people can visit, gamble, and wander around. The Mall (above the casino) will not open until the Grand Opening.

According to this RJ story today the 12/31 soft opening date isn't a sure thing. They haven't been issued occupancy certificates yet for any part of the building, including the casino. Still fire testing. But the 40/40/ Club says it is planning on opening Sunday night.

I think the issue is when you have a writer who does not care/learn about what they are reporting on. For example, read a car article in a good car magazine, and its great. Read the same thing written by a 'general' journalist and it is usually painful and useless. Exact same thing with what this forum deals with - its complex (or not!) and needs to be understood to be reported on well.

Good analogy. I find it frustrating that this is what someone does for a living, yet they can't manage to do it competently.

Perhaps they got that info because originally the Colorado River Bridge was supposed to be completed around 2008. But the September 2006 collapse of the cableway highline crane system across the canyon has delayed it two years. They just got the new highline operational in the last week or so. That article also says the bridge is 60% complete. No way is it 60% complete, they haven't even started the 1,000+ foot wide arch yet, which will involve building an elaborate temporary cablestay suspension system. I started a thread about the bridge on SSC.

in the actual article i read in the newspaper on the hoover dam bypass, it talked about the cranes collapsing, and yet it still said it would be finished this year. whatever the case, it won't be finished until 2010, which actually turns out to be good. arizona got funding to go ahead and widen the US 93 from a 2 lane road to a divided highway all the way through the mountains on the arizona side. It is scheduled to be completed at the same time as the bypass, this way it will all open together. for those who don't know, the hoover dam bypass only called for widening the road about a mile and a half on both sides of the bridge.
now all we have to do is bypass boulder city so it will be a straight shot, w/ not stopping, from arizona to vegas...

:previous: Good construction photo compilation! Thanks.

Palazzo is open now.

I walked through about an hour ago. Well, just the casino is open. I entered from the Venetian passage. There's a big dome there and a water fall and the ceiling rises several floors above what will be shopping in January. Then it opens to the casino and there are big artificial skylights over the widest aisles. Stylistically, there's nothing really wildly over the top or unique, but it feels elegantly comfortable, though the yellow carpet made me a little nauseous after awhile. Out by the front desk is another large dome with a large acrylic Lalique style sculpture of nymphs the base of which drops through an opening in the floor down to the next level. Numerous nice fronts to closed restaurants. There was a bar open that had zebra patterns on the pillars. Maybe the cafe was open, forgot to check that.

I've been lurking for awhile and figured I would post something. I assumed the Frontier would be imploded but I guess not. It's slowly being demolished by heavy equipment. This is from 12/28:

Wow, all of the construction happening in Las Vegas put me in awe. Some of these projects are massive.

Zorak, Nice shot from Wynn. I don't know why they didn't blow that tower, when they did the rest, but I guess they have their reasons.

Latennisguy - Great side shots of CC also, thank you. I assume that last shot is of the new CDS theater, for the Elvis show?

Has anyone heard anything new about the Las Vegas Wet Project planned for the south strip? Last I heard, they had signed a deal with the creators of "The Bachelor" to do a reality show about its construction.

Soft opening 12/31
Grand Opening 1/17

Soft openings are weird IMO. Many of the restaurants and other things are not yet open, yet people can visit, gamble, and wander around. The Mall (above the casino) will not open until the Grand Opening.

Went to Mario Batali's new restaurant in the Venetian (don't remember the name) back in April. Was a soft opening and supposed to be for friends/family, but they let us in (we've been to most of his other restaurants). Had a full course dinner, and my parents were about to pay when the waiter came up and told us it was free (it probably would've been somewhere around $700-800, too, although there were no prices on the menu...). :notacrook:

Wow, talk about being in the right place at the right time! Was Batali himself there, or just his exec chef for the restaurant?

Great pics of the Palazzo. It will make a great addition to the Venition and the Wynn and Encore. This should be a hot spot on the strip when the Encore is done in a year or so.

I just want to make a prediction, the Planet Hollywood Hotel/Casino will fail miserably. I was there two weeks ago and I was less than impressed. The property is a prime location for whoever the next casino owner will be in another two years.

Vegas will be spectacular in 2 years with the City Center and other new projects completed.

That is a weird effect. You'll notice that the glare from the gold windows is casting a shadow on the palm trees and people in that area, but the cars at the lower left side of the photo are casting their regular sun shadows in the opposite direction. Makes it look artificial, but it's not. Weird.

That effect from Trump reflection looks neat in January - but how will it feel in August? With all the closely built skyscrapers, especially at CityCenter, I have to wonder how this will affect the heat during the summer. Am I wrong or will this not increase the heat?

Las Vegas to Build World’s First 30 Story Vertical Farm
http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-energy-news-las-vegas-vertical-farm-1.2b.html

http://photos.commongate.com/13/51365_dqe0zald5h_l.jpghttp://photos.commongate.com/13/51363_uvz9q1n2jn_l.jpg
Las Vegas the tourist mecca of the World is set to begin development of the World’s first vertical farm. The $200 million dollar project is designed to be a functional and profitable working farm growing enough food to feed 72,000 people for a year and provide another tourist attraction to the city that does everything in a larger than life way.

The World currently uses about 80% of the available farm land and 60% of the earth’s population lives near or in an urban environment so the logical choice for farming is to go up for land where the environment can be controlled and where distribution is local. Las Vegas is seen as the perfect location for this project by Nevada State officials who would like to demonstrate their sustainability and environmental awareness instead of projecting an image of waste and excess.

Although the project initial cost is high at $200 million, with annual revenue of $25 million from produce and another $15 million from tourists the 30 story vertical farm would be about as profitable as a casino with operating expenses only being about $6 million a year.

There would be about 100 different crops grown ranging from strawberries to lettuce even miniature banana trees could be grown from each floors specially controlled environment. The products would go straight to the casinos and hotel properties and be a very visible and desirable addition to the overall Las Vegas experience. Design details should be worked out in 2008 and the project could open its doors by the middle of 2010.

Few questions:

Whatever happened to the Wall Street Towers? I know the design has been changed like 40 times but are they (or whatever they're called now) still alive?

What's the status of Stanhi and h.u.e.?

And why does the deuce suck so bad?

here is something odd:

i read on vegas4visitors.com they ranked planet hollywood at #2 for best hotel - thats not the odd part - i actually agree that this property IS vegas. i love what they did. (at least to the interior and low rise - the tower...well....)

anyways planet hollywood updated their website with a little movie showing that you must be able to run into celebrities (of the 90's) at this joint. what i caught tho is what looks like a photoshopped picture of the property with the central curtain walled window removed....this is where the 'hons clok' ad was plastered and now the poster for the rambo movie lays....

WHY? POINTLESS. - but doesnt all the lcd screens look nice? very times square - lotsa action! i think they should add lcd's to the tower in various spots.... besides the point.

Anyone able to get a new shot of the Planet Hollywood towers? The webcam doesn't show the building past the 26th floor and the first tower is blocking the view of the eastern side of the construction site. Also, is it unusual that the building does not appear to have any glass after 26 floors? I am looking forward to seeing the blue glass.

the side lights on the palazzo (th eones in question a while back shin red and purple) i spotted them one...in white, but now they are still off.....

something i like is that on the roof of the palazzo there are 2 sets of spot lights each with 5 beams hitting the sky a random angles....not nearly as dominant as the luxor...actually its very faint....it makes the palazzo look like its glowing against the night sky.
