the side lights on the palazzo (th eones in question a while back shin red and purple) i spotted them one...in white, but now they are still off.....

something i like is that on the roof of the palazzo there are 2 sets of spot lights each with 5 beams hitting the sky a random angles....not nearly as dominant as the luxor...actually its very faint....it makes the palazzo look like its glowing against the night sky.

Pics or it didn't happen! :whip:

Deutsche Bank to continue paying for casino construction: Perini

Jan 18 (Reuters) - Perini Building Co Inc, a unit of Perini Corp (PCR.N: Quote, Profile, Research), said Deutsche Bank will continue paying for the construction of Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino project in Las Vegas, Nevada, while the issues of loan default with the developer are being resolved.

The company's work at the Cosmopolitan will continue unaffected by the default notice, it added.

No one is bailing. When the project gets built we owners are going to be very very happy.... Unless you signed up with the management company... It is going to be stunning. That property is waaay to valuable to be stopped. Be it Eichner or someone else, the ease of use due to the smaller size of the property and the immediate access from the street, the partnering with Wolfgang Puck for room service and for this site the shear beauty of it should make this project attractive for some investors. Add the central location and a ton of other amenities this is a winner for we owners.

I already posted photos from the soft opening over New Year's, and I went back last night after the grand opening, and nothing was different. The only thing different is that some of the hotel rooms are open now and you can walk through the mall. Still most of the restaurants aren't open and most of the shops in the mall aren't open. The mall is a bunch of hallways. There are some new photos over at ratevegas.com (http://www.ratevegas.com/photo/gallery/palazzo). This time I parked in the underground parking and it is a lot better than I thought it would be, the escalator takes you straight to the casino, so you don't have to walk a mile like a lot of these places.

The obvious reason Eichner said he expected the default notice is because he can't make the payments on the construction loan.

The separate construction financing deal that Perini struck with Deutsche Bank is only a month to month deal because legally Deutsche has to wait three months before starting actual foreclosure proceedings. If Eichner doesn't get his act together there might be some really bad news in two and a half months.

The money from condo buyers should still be in escrow and should be safe if they want to just ride it out and wait for a white knight to take over the project when they can pick it up for a discount after Eichner goes bankrupt.

Maybe Silas was right a year ago. (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showpost.php?p=2751111&postcount=1931)

The Barney's store is open, which is the biggest store there, and there were a handful of small boutique shops open, but I'd say about 70% of the stores are not open yet. But you can walk around the hallways of the mall, which is kind of strange with so much unfinished.

"People have reportedly been evacuated from the Monte Carlo, and new guests were being turned away. The Bellagio and New York-New York casinos were prepared to evacuate if necessary." (from fox news)

i know people who work in NYNY and they are not told of any evac plans....

there would be no need to evacuate bellagio or NYNY, the hotels are hundreds of feet apart, unless monte carlo completely blew up, there would be no danger to its neighbors.

the fire is out now, but the entire top portion of the tower (where the sign rests) is gone along the south end.... it doesnt look like any rooms where in the blaze, maybe the ceilings, but you can see that the windows are right below the damage....falling debri caught 2 seperate parts of the tower on fire a few floors down, but were put out.......

i drove on trop passes the strip at 1145 from school to work, the strip was closed with dozens of firetrucks infront of the hotel, very eerie, there were still pedestrians, but the road was empty. people were parked along the I-15 (freeway) to watch and take pictures.

Rumor has it welders were on the Monte Carlo roof doing work right before the fire. This coming directly from CNN reporters. Fox News had by far the best coverage. Kudos to the Vegad FD for doing a nice job putting out the blaze. I've always worried or wondered what would happen in a Vegas Fire since the old MGM now Bally's fire of 1980.

The new sprinkler systems worked quite well and fire crews did a nice job.

From what I've heard on the radio with the interview with the fire chief, it was mostly the facade that was burning. Only a few indoor sprinklers came on because there wasn't much heat or smoke inside. The fire fighters had to hang out the window to spray the water. Seems that EIFS crap isn't very fire resistant. I'm glad more or the new buildings are glass clad.

its seems the fire was confined to the external facade of the building and no rooms were damaged according to the fire chief steve smith.

Hans Gruber
Jan 25, 2008, 11:33 PM
So based on what you guys have heard, the CNN report of welders on the Monte Carlo roof seem valid considering the fire was on the exterior of the building.

Has LVFD ever considering helicoptering in firefighters to the roofs of potential future hotel fires? They could have base jumping parachutes if the heat gets too hot. They could also helicopter in fire hoses and set a new building code to include rooftop fire hydrants or water supplies.

This may sound a little crazy, but there still is no really good way to fight these highrise fires except the current sprinkler systems and the updated fire code. Glad to hear nobody was hurt.

I was talking about the live coverage FOX News provided of the actual fire. I'm not talking about false speculation, just making the casino fire the most important story. CNN was running election coverage during much of the fire.

It's been confirmed by multiple sources that welders were working on the roof of the Monte Carlo prior to the fire.

In retrospect, CNN made the right call. The actual fire damage appears to be incredibly superficial. According to local reports, the fire was limited to the EIFS facade and no rooms caught on fire.

So...how long does everyone expect it will take the Monte Carlo to replace the damaged EIFS panels and look good as new?

Followup, do you think in the aftermath of the fire builders will stop using EIFS and switch to real masonry facades?

mdiederi
Jan 26, 2008, 3:52 AM
If EIFS is that flammable it should be banned on tall buildings. The fire spread really fast sideways.
If it had started at the bottom of the building the entire structure would have been engulfed in a matter of minutes.

Anyway, while running around trying to get shots of the fire, I spotted a new tower crane at Caesars.

The cladding of a new 40 story casino tower at the Borgata caught fire on the ground floor. The blaze toasted the building ground to roof within minutes. Luckily it was still under construction at the time.

I guess they're going to have to switch to all glass like the Luxor, Mandalay Bay and the new Trump Tower. Vancover BC had a different problem with their condos all made of fake stucco. It costs billions to replace over 100 20+ story condo towers because of water leaks and water damage. The fire problem in the hot Vegas desert is scrary.

I should also point out that due to the 24-7 building approach of Las Vegas, quality control often times suffers. I have a picture of my last stay in the Hotel Mandalay. The wallpaper was not properly installed and baseboard was not properly laid. The toilet was not pressure assisted, instead using gravity flush. Very fine materials were used in the hotel though.

From what I have been reading, it seems EIFS is a huge component of very hotel built since The Mirage.

Even hotels like Wynn Las Vegas, with floor to ceiling windows, use it (white stripes on the building), from what I can tell.

Now, as someone that knows virtually nothing about EIFS, are all EIFS materials created equal? I mean, are the bits that were cast for Monte Carlo likely the same as something that would have been installed at The Palazzo? My understanding is that foam thickness standards have been toughened - is that the big difference these days?

Obviously the thicker the polystyrene the more combustible material. Also it is supposed to be treated with fire retardants ..possible this wasn't and possible that it deteriorated over time. There is much controversy about how safe it is as cladding However our eyes do not deceive us. It also seems that eventually the fire put itself out rather than by any water from the LVSFD as they got hoses up there later. Also the fire didn't spread down the building.
The main question is what would have happen if this started on lower floors.

They are not changing the name. That is an old rumor that was squelched long ago. The news of Egypt laying claim to all things Egyptian came long after MGM decided to de-theme the Luxor. They simply wanted to change it from a family friendly resort to a more adult one. ;)

the news just went over updates on monte carlo - the whole property is still vacant and closed.....the county building inspector wont allow the casino to open until the burnt facade is either supported to the building or removed.... concerned that some could still fall (?) also when the hotel opens again it will only be open from the 26th floor down........THE INSPECTER IS REQUIRING MONTE CARLO TO REMOVE "ALL" THE EIFS THRU OUT THE PROPERTY (no time rame given) - and not just the damage facade.......

the hotel could stay open during this construction and 'defacading'

this COULD mean the monte carlo tower couold geta renovation - we all scrutenized the hotel for lookin like a 'prison' with its bland window cut out and blank tower.....being that the 'theme' is nothin spectacular and not fitting with city center......MAYBE MGM would want to update the old property (albeit built in '96) give it a glass facade - new theme or new 'moder' eifs facade similar to bellagio - more sleek and design oriented....

this could turn out pretty interesting.

(note there are several different types and ways of construction eifs - monte carlo is over 10 years old so you cant compare the eifs on it with the eifs on wynn or bellagio - i took a class that showed how eifs could be made to look like ANYTHING -any color, texture, cut, material so most every project uses eifs as a subsitute for brick or stone - getting the same exact look but less $$$)

it will be interesting to see is MGM is willin to 'invest' some cash into MC to give it a face lift - and to what extent.

i really hope they make Monte Carlo into an all glass building to mix with City Center. That was my biggest gripe about the whole project, was that Monte Carlo just stuck out like a sore thumb. Im glad the county inspectors are forcing MGM to remove it, because I could not see MGM doing it on their own. I guess something good can come out of this fire afterall:)

Edit: after reading the articles I realized the county inspectors are not making them re-facade the whole building, just the parts that were burned. So doesnt look like we will be getting a re-make Monte Carlo. :(

It's kind of confusing because what the building inspector said in the video interview is different than what's been written in the articles so far. In the video he said they first have to remove or secure the damaged part before they can reopen so that stuff doesn't keep falling off. Then after that they have to start replacing the faulty material on the rest of the building, which will take a period of time to do, but they can be open during that work. One source said securing the top might only take a day or two. So there's a chance they could be open for Super Bowl weekend, but the weather is getting bad now and that might delay their efforts.

It should not take that long for the facade to be repaired, as long as the inner rebuilding is finished soon.

That MGM Grand fire years back truly was an embarassment to the city and it's past building codes. I'm very impressed with the stability of the structure of Monte Carlo.

On the news this afternoon they had a Hotel Spokesperson for the Monte Carlo in a report who told them that the building will probably look very similar to its appearance before the fire when the rebuilding is completed.

Yeah, it's for one of the boutique hotels at Echelon, either Delano or Mondrian. They'll be on the extreme south edge of the Echelon site.

it is actually for the Echelon parking garage.

Really? I don't think I've ever seen them use a tower crane on a parking garage. Interesting.

Had to cross the north side of the valley yesterday so figured I'd snap a shot of Aliante.

MGMMirage Donates Perishable Food From Monte Carlo To Las Vegas Food Bank

A footnote to a Monte Carlo Fire Update on the Las Vegas Sun website states that MGMMirage donate six thousand pounds of perishable food items from various restaurants and other dining establishments inside of the Monte Carlo to Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas.

Props to MGMMirage for having the forethought and generosity to give the food to those in need as opposed to taking the easy road to the dumpster. Very very cool.

Some two week old pictures of the Fontainebleau from an interesting perspective.

From across the street at Sky:

The elevator cores from the same perspective:

Not sure if anyone caught this but looks like the Travelodge on the strip is not going to give up their little lot very easily to MGM. The Travelodge sits wedged between MGM's Circus Circus and MGM's new land purchase next to Sky. It seems reasonable that MGM must have offered them something reasonable for that piece. Anyway, looks like they are remodeling the motel and putting in some retail shops.

Here's the pic:

We might be past this topic already.....but I can't help thinking that the fire at the Monte Carlo might just have been the most perfect accident. Finally, the greater gods of gambling have sent a sign to MGM-Mirage, telling them to REMODEL THE MONTE CARLO!!!

:upload_71700:

Sidenote: Isn't it so entertainingly ironic that the original strip, now known as the North Strip, is the current hotbed for development, with some of the tallest buildings in the city going up? ...and on top of that, the resorts down on the South Strip are starting to seem a bit ....dare I say, aged? Only Vegas resorts are in danger of such notions merely 10 to 15 years into their lifetimes.

What an outstanding reincarnation for the North Strip, and it's awesome how the hot resorts of the 90s are keeping with the times quite well....maybe they won't necessarily be imploded in 50 years, but then again, who knows? After all, Vegas is truly the city of trend and fad.

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but Las Vegas is absolutely a fascinating place to me.

^^^^ that ravel lodge photo in '62 is amazing - rare to see the saharah under construction....wow....

speaking of monte carlo...someone should get a picture of it now....they jumped on fixing the thing...there is already new insulation panels ups. you cant see any of the charred facade...looks like a band-aid on the building.

sad to say that i think the monte carlo is NOT going 'under the knife' (with a complete renovation) just getting stitches. haha

city center main tower is large..you can now see the distinct 2 towers that rise from one large one....is it me or is cosmo taking forever to get up in the air? since they were done with the parking garage underground, youd think the towers would boom up.

also encore is almost done with its swoop - palms place has no more crane and panorama tower 3 is getting up there. its looking nice albeit a wall blocking the other 2 towers from views to the north.

echelon is just as much a mess as city center (a year ago) cranes everyewhere..and it doesnt help that fountain bleau is across the street- its like city center (now)

gateway las vegas (remember that one?) i saw last night on the city counsel channel that they redesigned it - much taller ---it looks kinda like- i want to say conrad...or the plaza....skinny and long....there was a nice rendering shown...it was interesting to watch---they had 100 fewer parking spaces than units and one commissioner would refuse to approve the project because of this, but the rest approved it despite this---they beleive 'mass transportation' will solve this problem......

in the fountain bleau photo - you can clearly see the balcony along the tower that is about 5 floors from the bottom - this is so people can over look the pool

Uh...the monorail doesn't go anywhere and people that have cars generally avoid the CAT bus. Also, I don't see what should have been done in the first place (a subway under Las Vegas Blvd. w/stations connection to the main entrances of the resorts) ever happening because of the utter failure of the monorail.

No one is bailing. When the project gets built we owners are going to be very very happy.... Unless you signed up with the management company... It is going to be stunning.
Hi, I'm not sure I understand you on this - are you referring to the rental agreement the Cosmo put together for renting the units? If so what's the negative impact?

Speculating here, but if the developer drops out then either the existing contracts will be null and void or another developer will pick up the agreements?

Indeed Congratulations to MGM Signature. #1 Ranking in entire US for TripAdvisor is impressive to say the least. I have stayed there and in my book just the non-smoking aspect plus the sliding glass door/balcony/fresh air into the room was a BLESSING in Vegas. To have the fresh air whipping through the entire room and the hotel non-smoking was awesome. The rest of the hotel was pure class as well.

That photo captures the area where the new 'Ultra Pool' is going to be located at MGM. That is going to take it all up a notch. Pool meets Ultra Lounge.

Thank you Mark 'The Artist' for the Cosmo reference! I forgot I posted that. Not sure if I was right that Cosmo may be delayed. But I think we all know realistically that behind the scenes some of the big guys are sweating bullets. That includes all the big banks, MGM-Mirage (who was forced to go out of country to find someone to fund CityCenter for them), Cosmo of course, Turnberry FountainBlue certainly and of course Plaza et. al must be watching credit markets very closely. $5 billion is a lot of money for anyone these days with the financing as it is.

I think I remember they said the thread post limit got boosted to 10,000 a few months ago when they moved the forum to a better server.

I heard there was a little fire at the Riviera today and they evacuated. But it was small and put out pretty quick and everyone was allowed back in already.

There's glass on Fountaineblaeiou now (first two shot from a penthouse at Turnberry).
