It's all perfect, not only is the demand there for the World Jewelry Center to begin construction, but construction costs are also dropping due to the recession.

Yes, I think you probably just read this CNN article-

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/12/11/diamond.record/index.html

Far as I know, the tall downtown projects were mostly condos, which I don't see any being built for a while with exception of those connected in Union Park.

There were a few hotels, like that 700ft Grand Central one and Allure 2 was to be a hotel also, they are probably going to be delayed until the strip hotel economy comes back.

The Encore sign looks a bit like a Ralphs market sign.... I was expecting something as cool as the main Wynn marquee, but oh well. Guess that works.

Thank god the Frontier sign is now history, everytime I go to Vegas I wonder why it was still there.

The guy who sold the Frontier, Ruffin, always said that he wanted to take the marquee back to Oklahoma with him, so I figured it was still there waiting for him to come get it. He must of come to his senses and finally realized how buttugly it was. :yuck:

I wonder the same thing as well... maybe it is a glass enclosed catwalk where the Amsterdam hookers can dance and tap on the glass with coins.... Ha!

No seriously, I think it is probably a sitting area or viewing podium. But I do think it would be very strange looking out of red glass. Talk about an angry view!

Didn't see this one coming.. guess it's not too shocking. I wonder what he has in mind for the property. I would hate to see it torn down, as the layout of the casino, elevator lobbies and guest check-in are laid out very well. I stay at TI at least three or four times a year... what a shame.

HOLY CRAP ITS SNOWING OMG.

Any other Vegas locals seeing snow?

Yes, it's currently snowing near the airport. It's about 11:00.

I’m not sure if selling Treasure Island is a good thing or not.
I really didn’t like a lot of the changes MGM made to property:

The new sign and the Name change to TI
The New show
Gutting the facade to put in Tangerine

More competitors on the strip is definitely a plus.
It’s also nice to see MGM’s special brand of generic may be slowing.
However, it was sold to Ruffin. I can’t say I was too excited about how the Frontier was run.
I’m worried he might neglect the that gorgeous property, until it falls apart.
Hopefully he will just resell it.

In the meantime, mud wrestling pirates can’t be much worse than the Siren’s show.

The Frontier was a dump, but I think Ruffin was appealing to a certain demographic with that property, budget conscience tourists looking for a cheap place to stay on the strip. His plans for Montreux looked to be a lot more upscale than the Frontier ever was, so hopefully he can inject more life in Treasure Island. I had always thought if I could ever buy a hotel on the strip, it would be Treasure Island. It's a great property with lots of potential.

I wouldn't doubt if the property were to get another huge overhaul soon with the casino areas finally completely remodeled. The rest of the property has a very 60s modern-chic look to it now, something along those lines would be nice, with a Bombay influence.

I kind of like whats been done with the property, minus the new signage. The new outdoor areas overlooking the lagoon was IMHO a great way to go... it brings a lot more energy to the strip..

The Sirens show is a bust though, although I am not sure how much longer the Pirate show would have lasted, even with the Pirates of the Caribbean hoopla. It could be the right time to bring back an updated version of the old show, as it's been a few years now since Sirens took over.

Hopefully they don't close down my beloved Canter's Deli!

Wow- big updates all around today. The sale of TI was unexpected, but it does make sense in this market. I'm all for diversification amongst Strip owners, and out of all of MGM's properties, this one makes the most sense. I can't see them giving up any flagships (MGM Grand or Mirage) nor can I see them breaking up the Mandalay Mile.

CityCenter is coming along great- I like the pictures above... you can see the snow!

What is the vacant area to the right of the Cosmo? Wasn't a roof pool supposed to be in that area?

The glass that's being inserted into the staggered framing on the podium has the same "vent" grates as the Harmon. Am i correct in assuming it is a vent of some sort? If that is what it is for, could someone tell me why these vents would be placed on lower levels?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, and much more flexible for the rent-seekers. They can demand that additional tax revenues be spent on their pet projects no matter what happens to the weather. ;)

The snow was kind of a washout here on the north Strip - a lot fell but nothing really stuck. And it started raining here about 5:00 pm. Looks like Henderson got the majority of the snowfall. Sucks to hear about Manhattan West. My gf works right next door, and she's been watching the construction. We even toured through the sales office just for the heck of it. Hopefully they'll get the funding to finish it off soon.

Looks like most of the snow was in the south east part of the valley, someone I know near Railroad pass (on the way to Boulder City) got about 8" yesterday. I live on the west side near Summerlin, and we only got 3/4 an inch, and most of it melted before 8pm even. It was almost all gone when I got up this morning.

Not Las Vegas per se, but most of the visitors to this thread are familiar with the massive Coyote Springs development in the works(about an hour from Las Vegas). Anyway, I came across this interesting tidbit in the Reno Gazette Journal:

Casino zoning OK'd in Coyote Springs (http://www.rgj.com/article/20081219/BIZ/812190475/1071/BIZ)

LAS VEGAS -- Clark County commissioners have approved rezoning 125 acres in the remote Coyote Springs development to allow a hotel-casino.

Former U.S. Sen. Richard Bryan represented developer Harvey Whittemore. He told commissioners that rezoning before home lots are sold will avoid future land-use conflicts.

The 43,000-acre community is 55 miles north of Las Vegas along U.S. 93. It has basic roads and a golf course that opened in May.

The commission also OK'd general plans for a 200-foot hotel-casino tower, restaurants, spa, convention space and a live entertainment venue.

Two partners in Coyote Springs Investment are principals with Peppermill Casinos Inc., which owns hotel-casinos in Reno and West Wendover.

did the shade of blue glass change or is it because the lower section of glass are dirty?

It's probably more like the latter--and I think it's more like there's a protective film when it's first installed. Remeber how the Trump glass changed reflectivity when that was being completed? I suppose it could be dust or even frost, too! I'd expect it to be uniform in the end.

^^
BTW, davidcharles: Welcome and thanks for the more personal display of LV snow!

I am sure it is just the dirty glass...
The thing that bothers me is the change from a chamfer to a point on the floors on the left side of the tower. Kind of random. You think if you were going to do that, you'd do it right above the mechanical floor. Must be where the residences start?

I have a pic from today but am having problems figuring out how to post.. hmm.

Maybe for special guests only. It was not scheduled to open to the general public until 8 p.m. Las Vegas time, which is still nearly 4 1/2 hours in the future. The time that shows up on this page is, I believe, Greenwich time. The previous message was posted at 8:09 p.m. Greenwich time, not Las Vegas time.

Thanks for that clarification... I left Vegas today around noon and was bummed that it didn't open at midnite like we thought it would. I really wanted to get a first glimpse to see everything before it was "touched."

Mirage's new volcano went bust three times at the 9pm show Sunday night. Halfway through each time (right to the first majore explosion) it would deactivate. Many people were booing outside... what a shame! I saw the show several times upstairs from the Penthouse level, I'm sure it will be impressive when they can get it to work consistently. The fountain of fire effects are spectacular and when the show is playing you can feel the windows in the room (even up at the top floor) begin to shake.

Treasure Island's Staff morale seemed to be very high this past weekend. Most of the employees I talked to were very happy or unphased by the recent purchase.

Still some activity at "The Condo Formerly Known As St. Regis." I know they're finishing the podium... it's nice to know that they will not just leave it with the steel exposed.

Cosmo is looking a lot better, CityCenter is too. The scale of both projects are very intimidating when you walk next to them. F-Blue and Sky frame that portion of LV Blvd very well... almost resembles a gate at the North part of the Strip.

Regarding the special installation being installed at CityCenter by WET Designs, does anyone want to speculate on what you think it would be?

Happy Holidays to all!!!

Encore will create about 5300 new jobs and is getting plenty of attention both nationally and internationally which is always good for Vegas.

From what they say at the sales center, WET Design's new water feature in front of ARIA should be quite spectacular. I have heard they could end up using mirrors (hidden on top of buildings) to reflect sunlight into the free falling fountain to make it shimmer like diamonds.

I've heard that there could be layers of dancing water falling over each other in the Sky and that the technology may recognize the power of the wind and control the height of the water.

At night, it may light up with fantastic displays of color.

I could be wrong on all of this. Just sharing what the on-site agents have said what it COULD be like.

Encore casino is very similar to Wynn, except it's partitioned, and there's even more red and lattice work. The red chandeliers over the gaming areas are very eerie looking.

I have always wondered if something like this might be incorporated into the project. I don't know if it would work in an exterior setting, as it seems like the wind may disturb how the water is portioned out:

I also wondered if we have already seen the construction of the feature already. Could those curved metal spires at the porte cochere shoot or pour water out of them? Just a thought.

You can see a portion of the bridge here:

The camera moves to two positions, which by the way looks like the glass is being installed on the strip frontage at Cosmo :)

It sounds like the perfect fit for the plan.

'Shovel ready', clean technology, etc. etc.

How much juice does Vegas have with Washington/Chicago mafia ?

Aaron, that water feature sounds cool -- but I don't think reflected sunlight is a super-smart idea for Vegas/CityCenter. Sounds more like a laser death-beam effect during the summer months. It's not like the sun is going to be reflected only onto the fountains but likely at an angry public. Let's see what they do..........
