The old Las Vegas Sun article said The Harmon would be adapted to 28 stories. So, I'm guessing they are counting the crown as three stories?
In the above pic (and in person), it's really hard to tell that The Harmon is that much shorter than surrounding buidings due to its jetted position on The Strip.

I don’t know if anyone caught Nightline tonight, but it was about the water drainage tunnels underneath the strip that have become home to the homeless. I didn’t even know tunnels this large existed underneath the strip. Does anyone know the extent of these tunnels or when they were built? Here is a link to the story.

Well they are storm drainage tunnels. They extend for dozens of miles under the city and whenever it rains you will notice a significantly larger number of homeless show up out of nowhere.
There are some big graffiti art galleries under there:

here is a similar story with pictures from the London Sun.
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/features/2651937/The-people-living-in-drains-below-Las-Vegas.html
The storm drains openings are easy to see as you drive around. Everytime there is a heavy rain in Vegas, the weather and newspeople talk about them. The various washes like Flamingo wash and Rawhide wash and the several others all run thru town. They are above ground mostly, until they hit the areas covered by buildings and freeways, then they are covered. One wash goes right thru I believe Bally's parking structure and often fills the with water. Often there are cars there that get swamped.

I have huge optimism for this city in the very near future when it comes to development. With City Center opening up in December, despite the turbulant economy, there will be quite a number of people who will want to check it out and stay there.
If I'm not mistaken, Mandrian Oriental for example is booked pretty solid for it's first few months it will be up and operating.
Also, the entire City Center complex will be creating 12,000 new perminant jobs! This will be a huge plus for the city of Las Vegas and it's citizens!

Yeah but you have to remember that it is taking a lot of business away from other hotels. Las Vegas Sands ain't doing so well, though it seems like Harrah's, Wynn and MGM will hold out fine.
However, I can see the cities economy turning around early next year. How we will recover is something that we have to wait for. It might be a decade before we start to see a lot of new mega-projects start up, but then again companies know that it takes years to build a new mega project and therefore might want to take advantage of low construction costs now and finish the project in five years.

blow people away like the bellagio did in 1998, no i don't think it will
why you ask
because people are used of 5 star megaresorts now on the strip with wynn, venetian, bellagio. bellagio itself when it first opened was a big step up from mirage or caesars (probably the highest class of resort we had in town at that time). city center i suspect will be at the same level as the wynns or palazzos of this world only on a larger scale.
thats not to say it won't be a success, it might of course take away business from the wynns and palazzos of this world and they might take business from it, i would expect the price of rooms at the more high-end spots to fall big time in 2010 though

Yep. Also, I doubt someone will take the project over. Once they see how City Center does then they will decide. If City Center does very well then construction will probably start up again. If it doesn't do very good then it will remain as it is. It is the same with Fontainebleau, but Fontainebleau is already over 70% finished so it depends on financial issues. I would bet it all depends on how City Center does.

The same question was the subject of the QOD on Las Vegas Advisor. This was the response:
Q:
I noticed that the website "Vegas Today and Tomorrow" hasn't been updated in over a month. Is it out of business?
A:
Nothing of the sort. Site creator and mastermind Mark Adams has been offline, though. He recently suffered five kidney stones in six weeks, among other crises that include a death in the family and house-hunting. That accounts for the hiatus to which you refer. We spoke with Mr. Adams on Sept. 3 and he reported that he was feeling better than he had in months. He also said to stay tuned for updates and an apology in the near future.
The other obvious problem for a site called Vegas Today and Tomorrow is that there's not much "Tomorrow" to report upon at the moment. Resort owners up and down the Strip are struggling desperately to complete projects or even to hang onto them (Fontainebleau, for instance). Other than Steve Wynn's plan to convert the Encore porte cochere into a pool and nightclub, there's been nothing of a "new project" nature for Adams to showcase during the last month or so.
Anyway, LVA wishes Mark Adams a speedy return to health and to the website that he loves so dearly.

I suppose they are. Are they just not going to have a sign on the building?

I guess they are waiting on to see who buys it...

The canoe looked pretty spectacular when I caught a glimpse passing it on the 15. The scale of it is huge. When it's all shiny and up close I think it'll look better.
Apparently, the 30% off CityCenter condo units is attracting a lot more interest to the project. The near $1 milllion Veer units are now in the $600s and the units formerly in the $600s are in the $400s, definitely a stark change from before. I heard the sales office is very busy and there aren't enough reps to give customers a tour.
Also, it is possible to switch from Vdara to Veer if the buyer is afraid he or she can't find financing for the condo hotel unit.
At least it will help jump start some real estate sales in Vegas and provide some uplifting change in the interim.

Nancy Rubins' work is certainly not for everyone. But from all of the CityCenter and MGM employees that I've spoken to so far, the general consensus of "Big Edge" is is that it's amazing up close. 'Enormous' and 'dynamic' were two of the most commonly used adjectives. One construction worker even said that it excited him to see it every morning. Pretty nuts.
I've only ever seen it from the Bellagio employee parking garage, but it looked awesome even from there.

That's not vacant land in the bottom right in that photo. That's a roof top blocking the view of the county land that is now covered with pavement and an escalator.

Wow everything looks like its coming down to the wire. I can only guess how many things need to be crunched into these two months.
I think it'll be talked about a lot by the first crowd of visitors who enjoy it this holiday. From architecture to art to retail to the casino there will be something about it that will peak a facet of interest and be relayed to others.
No one knows what to expect because it looks so industrial, but all the interiors should be more amazing (and warmer) than people predict.

It looks like a monolith at day time, but I think it will end up looking a lot better at night.
In about three months that entire section of the strip will look a lot nicer.

New article on The Harmon construction debacle. It says corrective work could be done in order for the tower to reach 49 stories, it would just be pricey.

Hi there everybody,
My name is James I just moved to LV yesterday, I've been a llllllllooooooooonnnnnnngggggggg time reader of your posts for the last few years but I never had a dedicated computer line to join in. In fact it was you guys that gave me the info to weight the pros and cons and to choose where to buy a place in the city and although I'm not exactly happy with my finances being stuck all in CityCenter (dumb move on my part but I only learn my lessons the hard way in life), I am very appreciative to you all for being such a wide range of voices full of knowledge about the topic of skyscrapers and the facets of this city. I may seem a bit off-balanced at times so please do forgive me...I guess that's why I'm moving to Vegas in the first place haha it's where all the freaks go!!
So to thank you all, I went out from the hotel today to grab some pictures and I hope to do lots more in the future from rare places and angles as I learn more about my new hometown.

Here is a comparison of my last trip to vegas and my current one. Personally I prefer the first picture...and I just can't seem to figure out why hmmmm.

These trees hopefully will mean that CC will not just use the 'usual' palm trees of the rest of the strip. Those are mid-west trees and everybody loves the mid-west/mountains!!

This is on the new Harmon Ave facing due East:

Cosmo is looking awesome (wish I bought in there instead of PCC due to several unique reasons) and I wonder what the pool will actually look like since everything else has changed on the project. Also I do see the irony in fact of the street directly across from a 11B project is one of the dirtiest in the city right now because elsewhere at least workers do clean up all the cards only to have them thrown again--(somebody will have to explain to me how the financial calculations work on that grand of a scale.)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3519/4002401211_68f5f456d3_b.jpg
I've studied the models of the final product, and now I've walked up and down the streets...but I still don't see how the hell this Harmon crossing is going to make traffic go faster. I know that the extra lanes will be great but overall I think the amount of extra traffic coming thru here will make this a permanent traffic jam spot as if the strip wasn't already enough of a gridlock. More lights always equals more confusion and I've travelled around the world and never seen so many street lights within 100m of each other.

7 freakin' street lights on one pole??? I've never seen that before...
Last but not least is a picture that hopefully your intelligent minds can analyze to answer some questions because I don't know anything about fire/water fountains:
