I really dig how modern everything is. Also, the floorplate seems to be structured pretty well. The Spa is close to the pool, The Buffet receives ample natural light, a full cafe and bar to grab a bite to eat at the pool. Looks well thought out.

In an interview after the conference call, Wynn said the company will spend about $65 million to change the front entrance at Encore to become the Beach Club, which will include a new nightclub called Surrender. The back wall at Switch Restaurant will be all glass so patrons can look out onto a terrace.

Well the camera's already do that. As long as the thing deactivate when they are off casino property and the employee is doing their own thing, I don't care.

I'm guessing that is exactly the reason; there are probably a boatload of sensors throughout the buildings (every hotel room, service areas, etc.) that will pick up and log those RFID chips so managers can tell whether their employees (maid service, for example) are servicing the areas when they should be.

Also, uniforms are easy to replicate, and people automatically tend to trust that a uniformed person is legit, especially if it's "just a maid"...you wouldn't want turrists to dress up as employees and make their way around inside the complex. OMG TURRISTS!!! AAAAAAIIIIEEEEEE!!1!!!one!!!1!

I don't think that is what they are used for. Given that there are over 10,000 sets of three pairs of shirts and pants they would have to use a good form of method to organize all those uniforms for cleaning. Especially since there are 5 or 6 different properties. Anyways tracking people at all times like that is probably illegal.

65 mil to change the front of encore?

i beleive this is the first time a major chunk of a wynn property is being redone - could this be his first mistake?!

also, the city center pilon sign is complete (along the freeway in the back) its just metal panels overlapping with a rectangle (bore) led tv in the middle - nothing fancy - but i think i remember seeing 'city center' so maybe the whole complex will still retain that I.D.

whats going to happen to the city center sales center next to NY NY? and the construction offices behind NYNY? CC phase 2?

solarquestion
Oct 31, 2009, 4:56 AM
I'm pretty sure that intial renderings of CityCenter listed the area behind New York New York as future condominiums. I'm guessing those plans are on-hold. I'm guessing that since there are still condos to be sold, the sales pavillion will remain open. From what I hear, there has been an uptick in buyers since the price of condos was reduced. So, who knows.

Honestly in around ten year I would not be surprised if NYNY and Monte Carlo are bulldozed and made into City Center part 2.

justdefended
Oct 31, 2009, 7:29 AM
Initially the CityCenter Sales Pavillion was to be a $25 million temporary building to be razed after condo sales were completed. I highly doubt that the building will be demolished in this climate. It's a very nice building and a great set of meeting rooms and office space for MGM.

When it was going to be razed I read somewhere there were plans for another pure residential high rise in its place.

There is also that plot of land connected to Circus Circus across from Sahara where MGM was planning a mixed use project with Kerzner. I'm sure that (along with everything else that involves construction) is on hold indefinitely.

Some new tidbits about CityCenter:

A cover is currently being installed over the pedestrian bridge between Vdara and Bellagio. The bridge includes some side lighting, but there was no full glass enclosure as of yet.

The entrance to the pedestrian bridge can be seen through the windows of the Vdara front entrance. The location should be easy to spot from the Vdara lobby.

The pedestrian walkway from Vdara to Aria's North Valet entrance is from the east side of Vdara circling around Harmon Circle to Aria. The walk looks to be about 3-5 minutes.

The Mandarin Oriental welcoming courtyard is very tranquil. A group of tall bamboo trees sit in the middle and will enclose visitors that come from the underground parking garage. The courtyard includes stairway to access to the bonsai tree garden that overlooks CityCenter Place. It also carries the Typewriter Eraser X art piece.

Veer Towers interiors won't likely be finished for Dec. opening. Plenty of work still going on inside.

Harmon is 30 stories. 28 story building with a 2 story crown.

Aria said to be gorgeous inside. Hard to describe, but lots of natural light.

Crystals will be 60% occupied at opening and should be full by June 2010. No grocery store yet because leasing agreement for space is too pricey.

From what I was told by a lady responsible for overseeing the installation of the Claes Oldenburg, those aren't actually bonsai trees. She was severely reprimanded by a horiculture person and told that they were a particularly nuts species of pine. Whatever they are, they look like bonsai trees.

I know Richard Long is supposed to begin installation of his piece in the lobby from December 1st. No one seems to be able to nail down when he'll finish. Did you hear that the interiors wouldn't be finished for the building, or did you mean the lobby specifically? We're getting conflicting dates.

What? You would build a large metro police "headquarters" without parking? The police department alone has over 4,000 cars. Their jurisdiction covers all of Clark County, which is 7,910 square miles. You can't patrol that large an area on foot.

The frickin parking deck is bigger than the buildings then it has a massive parking lot surrounding it. It is ridiculous. By the way I hope all the cops for the 7000 sm are driving back to this building every night.

North Las Vegas, New City Hall - webcam! (http://www.cityofnorthlasvegas.com/Departments/PublicWorks/CityHallCam.aspx)

It's hard to tell how far this has come along(it being night-time at the moment) but I see a crane and a bunch of lights. There were some renders posted a number of pages back and it's 9 stories if memory serves me. Anyway, it's prolly worth a look during the daytime.

On edit:

Just checked it out during the daytime...nothing terribly exciting yet, but there's a big-ass crane up, alongside what appears to be several floors of concrete elevator shaft, so the rest of it shouldn't be far behind.

also the louie viton store led 'thing' was being tested - its not a 'tv' its actually white dots separated too far to create an image - i guess its just going to be flashes and random patterns....btw the metal where these white dots are are actually a pattern of the louie viton logo "LV" with the white lights scatterred within

On the sexy new projects scale, this one's kind of a dog, but so what...it's confirmation that LV development isn't at a complete standstill--it just appears that way after more than a half-century of boom:

lvbusinesspress.com - Work to start on airport cargo center (http://www.lvbusinesspress.com/articles/2009/11/04/news/iq_32070870.txt)

Space for operations will remain the same but efficiency expected to increase with new facility

BY TONY ILLIA

McCarran International Airport's $29 million cargo center is clear for takeoff. On Nov. 9, the two-building, 200,028-square-foot complex officially breaks ground at Surrey Street and Patrick Lane. Las Vegas-based Marnell Properties has a 20-year ground lease to develop the 19.15-acre airport site; rent generated by the project will be spilt with the Clark County Department of Aviation.

"This type of public-private partnership enables municipalities to build critical infrastructure while still preserving their cash reserves," said John Restrepo, principal of Restrepo Consulting Group, a Las Vegas-based economic research firm. "It additionally enables them to realize a revenue stream without incurring an initial capital outlay."

The development, which is 75 percent preleased, is expected to make up to $3.6 million a year when fully occupied. Asking rents start at $1.50 per square foot, not including taxes, insurance and maintenance costs. R&O Construction is the general contractor; Marnell Architecture is the designer. Mutual of Omaha Bank is underwriting construction.

Marnell Air Cargo Center calls for a 79,000-square-foot FedEx building and a 121,900-square-foot multitenant structure. The complex replaces the airport's three aging cargo buildings that combine for roughly the same amount of space. At least seven air carriers have signed leases thus far, including United Parcel Service, Allegiant Air, Southwest Airlines, US Airways, and Omni Air International. Nearly 190 million pounds of cargo moved through McCarran last year, a 6.7 percent decrease from 2007. FedEx Corp. last year processed 51 percent of the airport's total mail and freight totaling 97.1 million pounds. The Memphis, Tenn.-based shipping company has moved 68.5 million pounds of cargo through September year to date, which is 7 percent less than 2008.

FedEx signed a 20-year lease for a custom stand-alone building inside Marnell Air Cargo Center that will house miles of specialized conveyor belts and package-sorting machinery. The building is a 30-foot-tall, concrete tilt-wall structure with 12 loading docks. Its neighbor is a multiuse building with up to 15 tenants in space as small as 3,500 square feet. Roughly 50,000 square feet is being left as a shell for future use as necessary.

Construction of Marnell Air Cargo Center calls for casting 130 concrete panels on site that average 26 feet wide by 30 feet tall. Panels serve as building blocks that are lifted, positioned and fastened into place, Marnell Properties Vice President of Construction Mike Spainhour said. The buildings will have ground-level and dock-high loading doors and card-key secure entries and front offices. The center will be linked into McCarran's computer system, thereby enabling Transportation Security Administration officials to monitor when loading doors are open or shut.

"The complex will be built in compliance with airport codes and TSA requirements. It has been interesting to see how cargo works and what it entails since this development faces both the air side and street," Marnell Properties President Brad Schnepf said. "This will likely be the last development at McCarran."

While the project won't add capacity to McCarran's existing cargo facilities, it is expected to greatly improve the airport's operational efficiency.

"Moving this function to the perimeter of the airport will allow us to make a much more efficient use of our airfield, particularly in terms of space for parking aircraft overnight," Clark County Aviation Director Randall Walker said. "Additionally, this cargo center was designed with input from its larger tenants. By keeping the end-users' needs in mind from the beginning, this new building should be more efficient than the cargo facilities currently in use at McCarran."

Marnell Air Cargo Center will finish construction late next year; it's expected to reach full occupancy by early 2011.

i think that may be wrong

It was proposed to be between 5 and 8 billion dollars. However that was before the economy went to hell. It would have had 15 million square feet including 2 million for parking. Even though the site itself is around half the size of city centers, I can still see the price tag getting pretty large if the property were built up a lot.

Then again, they already did pay 1.3 billion just for the land.

2:40 he starts talking about the feature at the porte cochere... looks like there is no fire- only a LED lit fountain with a 200 ft waterwall on white backdrop.

3:15 he talks about the "twilight" feature in the subterranean garage driveway for Veer. Never heard about that before... interesting!

Also watched the videos at the new citycenter.com website. Do you think the letter branding will appear as extensive on the outside of The Harmon?

Does anyone have any updates on the exterior LED lighting on Aria? Is it just the ends, or does the main tower change color as well? That would be awesome if the whole thing vibrated with color...

Wow- less than a month until the first component opens... I thought the day would never come. Introspective time- when they broke ground on this monster, who knew that by the time it would open we'd be in such a stressed economic time?

I'm going to miss following the construction... it has been such a staple in my daily routine for the past 3 years (with CityCenter)- My love affair with construction in Vegas goes back to my first visit in '96. Right in time for the Bellagio- Aladdin boom. This is my first Vegas build lull period.

Pity there will be no fire :( The subterranean lighting sounds interesting. I believe the LED lighting is only on the ends, our vegas locals may have more input on this.

It's fortunate that Harmon doesn't look so cropped from the street level.

So far each person that has had a site tour and written about it has left the project with a sense of awe. It's about time CC starts getting some positive press to combat all the naysayers.

Flying in an out of Vegas last night, I noticed the varying horizontal bars of LEDs across the front of Aria... I wish I could've seen the Veer towers better! Even from the air at night, the scope of CC is mind-boggling.

I did have one question though... I noticed a lone highrise to the west of the Palms towers that I didn't recognize. It was maybe one or two blocks west from the Palms? Just curious...

There are 3 towers on the Palms property, the original, the second tower with Playboy in it, and the third is Palms Place, condos I believe.

That might be what you saw. There aren't any other tall buildings west of there until Queensridge North and Red Rock.
