drove pass cosmo this morning - VERY excited - each level shows something different thru the window - lights / movement everywhere - i really think cosmo will be the epitome of vegas....

also - i spotted the start up of the harmon tower advertisement wrap - and it looks like they are not doing the rectalinear poster' but really cover from bottom to top -

they have started at the south most part of the blue glass podium low rise

between planet hollywood, cosmo, and what ever lcd city center does, that harmon LV BLVD intersection will become our version of time square

Is that two shades of blue I see on the cosmos exterior lighting? (the upper floors)

also, since I have not been to vegas in a few months to see for myself...I am curious about the lighting pattern, does anyone know what type of display they will have? will it always just be random patters? -and how often is it changing?

I can't wait to get into one of their terrace rooms!

ALSO- about the HARMON....I notice there seems to be a number of different lights on inside the building...are inspections taking place fairly often, or does anyone know whats going on in there? I realize it will likely be dismantled...I am just curious about the traffic in there

Thanks everyone for the pictures -theres some really nice shots in there

Yes. It is official. The HARMON will be dismantled.

It was announced a few days ago:

From Screamscape
www.screamscape.com

http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/8159/20101207citycenter.jpg

Las Vegas News - (12/7/10) Vegas fans, take a peek at some photos from City Center posted to Theme Park Review (http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=53921&p=970660), as well as a few peeks inside the unfinished Harmon building, now set for demolition in 2012 it seems.
Construction on the project was stalled back in 2008 I believe, along with reports of some kind of construction error with the rebar in the tower that would not allow it to rise to it’s full height. The initial fix was to cap off the tower at a shorter height, where it was believed to still be stable and turn the mixed used hotel/residential project into a 400 room hotel that was to have opened by now. Now MGM/MIRAGE has confirmed that they wish to demolish the unfinished tower (http://www.lvrj.com/business/mgm-resorts-targets-harmon-hotel-for-demolition-107681193.html), though there are pending legal fights over the stability of the structure. Given the location of the tower to the rest of City Center, I believe they will have to take this one down piece by piece and not via implosion.
Speaking of implosions… you can also find a photo showing off a wing of the Tropicanna that was imploded a month ago at Vegas Today and Tomorrow.

little sneak peek into cosmo.....

The Cosmopolitan appears to be embracing it's place on The Strip and reveling in it - personalizing it and making it an integral part of it's identity. Doubling down on it even. Unlike CityCenter, where designers seemed almost ashamed to be part of the legacy of their neighborhood, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas seems to be all about providing a window to the excitement that's both inside and outside it's doors.

i went to cosmo last night........AMAZING!

they did EVERYTHING differently - but did it right.

the chandelier is awesome! the 3 upper levels are so different with the lounge space, couches, pool table / foose ball, etc.....everything amazing.

the porte cochere is so bright and clean. the casino cabanas are fun and intimate.

the pool deck will beat wynns any day by the view alone.

the hotel registration is a bit understated. but maybe that is a good thing. every where it was packed. everyone in aw. i then went next door to city center and i was the only one there. the mall was depressingly dead. the casino felt even for like an airport terminal compared to cosmo. its truly said how city center failed.

the hidden pizza place is a true find. no one will come across it unless you know what to look for - the smell on the second level from some restaurant had me drooling. but not as much as the chandelier. im in love with that thing. bars everywhere - must be 4 or 5 within the chandelier.

the exposed glass cylindrical elevators that ride on one track, with the curved doors.... pinch me.

when i got my car from valet, there was bottles of water and purple cookie (cute). there are several concierge desks and even an information kiosk at front. staff EVERYWHERE and so hospitable. i must say it was great playing a slot machine 5 feet from the strip. i dont know any other casino this close to the street.

when i left i realized that something was off......then i realized that everything shown in the cosmo tv commercials where not in the property... there is no grand stair case with the bulb chandelier above. there are no hotel rooms circling said chandelier. i wonder if these are in different spots. or maybe the commercial was shot at a different place. (?)

cosmo is a bit tight squeeze, but it felt fun as if everything is accessible.

this is the only property i would want (and plan on) having a stay-cation in.

i would post pictures, but nothing would do it justice....even the professional photos dont capture its true essence.

just GO! GO! GO!

(but dont gamble - the slots are tight)

:)

I feel that Cosmo was superior in every way to City Center. Makes me wish that city center was a scaled up Cosmopolitan with the entire hotel straddling the strip and all those stupid roads shoved under the site.

That article is depressing. I've never lived in Vegas, and I have only driven on its freeway twice before (about 3 years ago). It's sad to hear how a city that had so much going for it, is now practically on its knees and bleeding. Here's hoping that it doesn't take too long for Vegas to get back up.

I read that the other day too. Its really amazing how we were just starting to make some shifts towards new-urbanism when the recession hit. Really horrible timing, though apparently the city was a good decade behind the times when it came to suburban vs. new urbans developments. We were building with the suburbanization fad of the 70's and 80's when really we should have been building much denser and probably should have taken building cues from the springs preserve structures.

I saw this amazing video on the building in the springs preserve. Too bad I cant find it.

There have been several plans for new NBA arenas in the past couple years. There are a couple still trying. One proposed by Caesars Entertainment behind Harrah's and IP. One the city is proposing at Symphony Park and the Silver State arena between Fontainebleau and Sahara.

if they were smart they would make it expandalbe to 70,000 seats and then it would be able to host a super bowl.

superbowl will never be in vegas, they have strict policy against gambling - vegas cannot even advertise commercials during the superbowl - they allways have ads before or after the game

Quite ambitious indeed. Looks like a great plan though. Would sure be a hot spot if built. I like the road running through the middle. It seems like they want a more pedestrian friendly area with it.

If the reason the NFL had for not allowing any gambling associating had anything to do with Vegas not having a Super Bowl quality stadium, you might be right.

But their issues are strictly with sport's gambling potentially influencing the Super Bowl and it's players. Letting the Super Bowl players loose in the heart of the world's gambling mecca for two straight weeks and nights is an infinite jump of temptation from something as simple as not allowing Vegas advertising. That would scare the hell out of the NFL, not entice them. Maybe you can't imagine what a score shaving scandal would do to forever change the image of the Super Bowl, but you gotta know the NFL leadership is all too aware. It's just not going to happen.

for whatever reason, monte carlo has changed its exterior flood lights that shine on the hotel tower, in stead of bright white, it has been DARK BLUE the past couple nights......it almost looks like a rip off of cosmos lighting. maybe they are trying to be more sophisticated?

i thought the lights looked great. they were a nice compliment to city center and cosmo. it would be nice to see those lights permanently and maybe branding the property more towards their hotel 32.

What is this?

As for the amusement park...
I don't live there, so take my opinion with a grain a salt. Anyways, I feel anything that may help the economy is a plus. If it attracts more families to come to Vegas, and spend some money, then why not? It may, or may not bring with it more family friendly proposals, but as long as it helps the city's economy it should be contemplated. Just think about it. Chances are families, that come down to Vegas for the amusement park, will be there during the day. Then probably at night, they'll leave their kids in the apartment, with a guardian, so they can go out to do what adults do best in Vegas

That is the new city hall.

I actually did some rough estimates and found that you could shove all of Disney World into the southwest part of the valley. It would even fit if it was south of the 215 and west of the I-15.

Ive always thought that partitioning Vegas into family friendly, mainstream and 'truly sin city' would be the best way to go.

there is circus circus - it inclosed - which one would HAVE to be in order to be any kind of a success year year round - AND it has twice as many attraction as what this is proposing (8 vs 15 ) PLUS the only people that go to circus circus are kids - its a baby sitter property. the amusement park isnt even crowded on a normal day.

i for one do not think this 'amusement park' would work - it would need to be bigger and it would need to offer something that isnt already in vegas (as in a waterpark)

They already tried the 'kiddie ride' thing in Vegas. Back of the MGM there was a good sized amusement park and it didnt do that well. It was torn down and condos were built-the havent done too well either.

Vegas is for adults-leave the kiddies home.

You don't want the Olympics, TRUST ME. The so-called spinoff benefits are not worth the cost. A few rich people get richer and that's about it. The rest of you be stuck with a bill that will take at least three decades to pay off, while the IOC laughs all they way to the bank. Don't do it!

Yeah because B-cities like Atlanta and Salt Lake City haven't seen huge booms the respective decades after hosting an Olympics...

Atanta nearly doubled its population from 2.95 million in 1990 to 5.75 million in 2008... in large part due to the business impact infused by things created out of the Olympics.

Actually the park did quite well, but MGM management figured they could make even more money by expanding the casino and building condos.

The numbers you mention are for the whole metro area, not the city itself. And the claim that the increase is "in large part" a result of "things created out of the Olympics" is not supported by any evidence you have provided. The populations of most metropolitan areas over a period of 18 years are likely to show large gains. It's the way of the world. And the implication that huge population growth anywhere is a good thing is also very subjective. I don't happen to agree. Ah well, what does it matter, the powers that be, making decisions about the Olympics, could not care less about what we say on this list.

I don't think you can deny that in Atlanta's and Salt Lake City's case, the amount of development they have seen would probably not have happened if not for the Olympics.

Looks like Caesars is looking for a $400 million loan to finish the tower at Caesars and build "Project Linq".

Still can't figure out how Linq will do that area any good. At least it will bring in construction jobs as well as retail/food jobs.

And the cost of living skyrockets too. I live in Vancouver, an already expensive city, and getting by is even harder now thanks to the Olympics. Sorry, but you just can't convince me that the Olympics are all that great. Look at Athens for example, the Olympics there contributed to Greece's financial meltdown. Not seeing a whole lot of growth there, just a few crumbling, abandoned leftover Olympic venues. Mind you, this is Greece we're talking about, they never could get their act together.

Salt Lake City's Olympic Games actually turned a PROFIT and the residual money was put into an endowment that pays for arts programs and athlete training throughout the state. And as a result of the Games, many athletes fell in love with the city and decided to call it home. (i.e. Apolo Ohno, Picabo Street, others).

Overall I think the Games were a very positive experience for the city and its residents. It also gave the city worldwide exposure - something Las Vegas already has - that has led to continued development throughout the 2000's and into the current decade, including next year's completion of a multibillion dollar mixed use luxury shopping center in the heart of downtown (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=174928&page=138). Not to say development would not have occurred without the Olympics, of course it would have, but I don't believe it would have been possible at the current level without the Olympics, namely because many companies and retailers didn't consider Salt Lake City a viable World Class City until after the Olympics cemented that image (whether it actually can be considered one or not is a different story, but the Olympics helped its case immensely).

That said, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City are very different cities and could have very different Olympic experiences. But hey I say go for it, would be really cool to have an Olympic Games where you can gamble between events :) God knows you'll never be able to do that in Salt Lake City ;)
