Why is everyone talking about Olympics in Vegas? None of the developers have mentioned the idea, and even the blowhard drunk mayor hasn't mentioned it. Think about it, Vegas is way too hot for the summer Olympics and the local ski resort is way too wimpy for the winter games.

The only Olympics happening in Vegas is the "OG" Olympic Garden topless bar.

it is said to be a mix of town square and circus circus...and have (of course) the worlds tallest ferris wheel.

THE SAHARA IS CLOSING

http://www.vegastripping.com/news/news.php?news_id=3922

the property will be closed and put into mothballs until SBE entertainment feels that a renovation makes financial sense or they elect to sell.

Since Culinary Union agreements require 60 day advance notice of property closure/termination, we can peg the earliest date for closure of Sahara to take place on or around the 15th of May 2011, ending 59 years of legendary fun times.

So what's up with that dirt lot by Stratosphere? That thing has been empty for like 20 years now.

Which dirt lot by the Stratosphere? There are some small dirt lots next to the Stratosphere, but no really big ones. Or, do you mean the large dirt lot on the southwest corner of Sahara and LVB? That's actually been empty for 51 years since the original El Rancho burned down to the ground in 1960. Circus Circus bought it a long time ago, and then they merged with MGM, and then they sold it to Sol Kerzner at the peak of the bubble, so nothing will happen there for another long time because they over paid for it.

Circus Circus bought it a long time ago, and then they merged with MGM, and then they sold it to Sol Kerzner at the peak of the bubble, so nothing will happen there for another long time because they over paid for it.

Actually, there was only one major hotel-casino called El Rancho (although two had "El Rancho" in their name). The one being discussed now, the one that burned down in 1960, was actually called the El Rancho Vegas. The later casino-hotel, where the shell of the Fontainebleau now stands, had no "Vegas" as part of its name. So, the earlier one was the El Rancho Vegas, while the later one was simply the El Rancho. People are often confused by these similar, but not identical, hotel-casino names.

Circus-Circus Enterprises (actually Mandalay Resorts by then) merged with MGM-Mirage in 2005, well before the vacant property (former El Rancho Vegas parcel of nearly 26 acres) was bought by MGM-Mirage in early 2007, so it was never owned by Circus-Circus. There is some additional adjacent land that was bought by Circus-Circus many years ago, which was also to be used partly for the proposed joint venture, but it is not the land at the corner of The Strip and Sahara, where the El Rancho Vegas was.

Two months later, in June, 2007, the land was not sold to Kerzner International, rather a joint venture was established between MGM-Mirage, Dubai World, and Kerzner International. MGM-Mirage would supply the land, while Dubai World and Kerzner International would provide cash equity, so that MGM-Mirage would own half of the project and Kerzner/Dubai would own the other half. Since that construction project never got off the ground, I suspect that the joint venture was ended, and that MGM-Mirage (now MGM Resorts Int'l) still owns the land. Maybe someone else could confirm or refute that suspicion.

A 500-foot Ferris wheel could become the next towering landmark to greet visitors on the Strip. Clark County commissioners unanimously approved a use permit Wednesday that clears the way for a developer to build a 10-acre amusement park and retail center on property he owns near Mandalay Bay.

If built, the Ferris wheel would be the third-largest in the world and would outstretch the 443-foot-tall London Eye to become the biggest in the Western Hemisphere, developer Howard Bulloch said. Several commissioners bubbled with enthusiasm about the project, like kids about to jump on a fun ride.

“I do appreciate that it’s family friendly and will pull in people from around the world,” Commissioner Mary Beth Scow said.

“It’s a way to re-invent the wheel,” Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani said.

But Bulloch’s plan contains no details about how he would pay for the project during a deep recession in an area where family entertainment was written off as a failed experiment years ago. And he is competing with casino giant Caesars Entertainment, which also wants to build a Ferris wheel.

Bulloch said his project would create 200 construction jobs and 200 permanent jobs after the amusement park opens.

A temporary 200-foot-tall Ferris wheel would be erected initially and replaced later with the full-sized sky wheel.

He said the 500-foot wheel would fall within the Federal Aviation Administration’s recommended height limits for the site.

Plans also call for six additional rides, a 140,000-square-foot retail complex and a 21,000-square-foot conference center. The site has a total of 38 acres, allowing room for additions such as a roller coaster.

The proposal echoes a London-themed park that Bulloch had planned for the site a decade ago. That project stalled in the economic slump after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, so he and his partners decided to hold off, he said.

“It’s time for an attraction like this on the Strip,” Bulloch said. “We think this will be a phenomenal attraction for the city.”

This development will be more than simply a Walgreens. It will have about 17 businesses, including three restaurants. Walgreens will occupy less than 20 % of the total square footage of this three-story miniature shopping mall, currently known as Harmon Corner. As of a couple months ago, the plans were to open in time for Christmas. Whether or not that happens, time will tell.

Engineer: CityCenter’s Harmon would collapse in earthquake
http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/jul/11/nv-citycenter-harmon/

The unfinished Harmon hotel tower at CityCenter on the Las Vegas Strip would likely collapse in a strong earthquake, a structural engineer told casino operator MGM Resorts International on Monday.

The report sent to the casino company by Weidlinger Associates of Marina del Rey, Calif., says it would take at least one year to figure out what kind of repairs would be required to save the tower.

"In a code-level earthquake, using either the permitted or current code specified loads, it is likely that critical structural members in the tower will fail and become incapable of supporting gravity loads, leading to a partial or complete collapse of the tower," said Chukwuma G. Ekwueme, an associated principal of Weidlinger.

seems the entertainment complex between o'sheas and flamingo is back on

Plans for a $400 million dining, retail and entertainment plaza on the Strip dubbed Project Linq resurfaced Tuesday night at a Paradise Town Advisory Board meeting.

The proposal for a 325,000-square-foot outdoor corridor of bars, restaurants and shops between the Flamingo and O’Sheas was first envisioned by Caesars Entertainment in 2006, but the project was slow to get started because of the economic downturn.

The project would also give the facades of the Imperial Palace and O’Sheas a facelift and would be anchored by a 550-foot Ferris wheel.

8 News Now has learned that CityCenter is submitting proposed plans to Clark County to implode the troubled Harmon Tower.

Wasn't this already announced? Anyways, it's not surprising. You have an empty building that is structurally unstable. Implosion is the logical conclusion.

The Harman will never be imploded.

Plus it has the smooth glass.

Just like the stardust, the glass would be removed first. MGM announced they may demo the tower, but now they have actually submitted a request to the county and judge to do so within 6 months!

It will be interesting to see how they avoid cosmo and crystals...

That's what I'm thinking, it's too close and will cause too much collateral damage if they implode it. Those things don't always fall exactly as predicted. Safer to dismantle it piece by piece, but will take longer, of course.

I imagine they would have to vacate the surrounding hotels in their entirety if they were to implode the Harmon. What a hassle this will be.

there is no chance mgm will be allowed implode the harmon given its closeness to cosmo, Perini is still saying the building is safe so this thing will likely run and run for a while yet

...just convert the Harmon into the Strip side Marquee!

ScottG
Aug 20, 2011, 2:11 AM
the prblem is - a 'third party' inspector deemed the building unsafe and would collaspe in an earthquake - perini may say is fixable (everything is) but mgm will say its unsafe - the judge has to decide if the building should stay up while the two companies duke it out in the court room - mgm could then say city center is loosing money as the main corner is obstructed by an unsafe tower - its hurt the property image and reputation and every day that tower is there, city center looses money - even if the tower is 'fixed', it will never be able to recoup and regain a viable reputation and brand - who would stay at a tower once deemed unsafe?

regardless, perini DID construct the tower unsafely and against the construction documents - i dont see how perini can get out of this - unfortunately perini is the scapegoat for mgm cutting out the harmon - even IF mgm did it because its ran out of money and is using the construction defect as a scape goat - when an oppertunity to get out of a ditch comes, you jump on it - and it looks like mgm will be riding this thing to town.

That's what I would do. Cover the entire thing with LED lights.

That would be sweet. It'd be a greater attraction to City Center.

Can anyone get updates on the City Hall and that other city building? It's been a while.

:previous:

That won't happen, as the building is unsafe in a major earthquake. The sign (as you've proposed would crumble and fall on pedestrians and possibly destroy a good portion of the Cosmo.

Yeah, they said from the start it was going to be 3 floors, 17 stores, and a huge sign similar to Times Square.

This is kind of random, but I just felt like saying that I wish the airport was orientated like this so the southern part of the strip could be filled out more. Blue is terminal/parking, red is airfield, green are landing strip orientations. I set it back a fair bit from the strip and it might need to be set back even more. I think it would be cool to put the high speed rail between the terminal and the strip. Heck, the whole stadium (the new planned stadium they can't decide on where to build) could be crammed in there.
