reminds me of the las vegas monorail - how they didnt connect it to the airport or downtown.......and two days ago the news announced a judge rejected the finiancial plan presented to keep the thing running - saying it will prolong the inevitable of running out of $$$ - so basically it looks like the monorail will be shut down - some think maybe harahs or mgm could buy since they could get affected and benefit from the connection (especially harrahs - er correction caesars entertainment)

You should definitely listen to this KNPR discussion on the monorail to understand just how screwed it was from the get go. (http://www.knpr.org/son/archive/detail2.cfm?SegmentID=7959&ProgramID=2260)

We should have never built the thing. A tram or light rail down the strip would have made some actual sense and would have cost 1/5th as much while getting a lot more ridership.

I was down at the Cosmopolitan this weekend and noticed they've covered the top section (soon to be LED screen) with a picture of an American Flag.

Guess that means it'll be a while before the screen is ready, and they didn't want to leave it white.

I'm a little surprised they're going ahead with this when they haven't even finished Tivoli Village yet.

I finally went to Tivoli a few weeks ago, during the farmers market on Saturday, and while there were a lot of people there, and a good selection of things to buy or learn about, it's still kind of small, and the wall at the north end of it all is kind of ugly. It's a temp wall until the rest of the place is built, but with no signs of construction on the other side, I wonder just how "temporary" it will be. And if they go ahead and start work on Renaissance, will they actually finish it also, or will it stall half way through?

Holy mackerel. EHB must be taking advantage of low construction costs maybe?

800k square feet is a lot of space. By comparison, the Canal Shoppes at the Venetian totals only 500k square feet.

I life really close to this, but not too close. I hope my property values go up. :D

haha the guy in that video would NOT stop gushing about the projects. :haha:

In any case, I will agree this looks to be an incredible project, Tivoli Village is quite stunning and I'm excited at the prospect of this intersection developing with the rest of Las Vegas. LV Boulevard was always notable for its so-to-speak destination intersections (ped overpasses, major resorts anchoring all four corners, etc.) but I've not seen an example of such off the strip. Alta and Rampart is showing its future potential though.

I was told that PH Towers:

1. It is being rebranded as Hilton Grand Vacations

2. Hilton Grand is spending 6 Million dollars to take the PH Towers name off the elevator doors, at the top of the building and remove all PH Towers branding

3. No More VIP Owner Line

4. No More Westgate benefits

5. No Westgate Transfers or Exchanges into PH Towers

6. Feb 1, 2012 it will be Hilton Grand Vacation Club

Was in Vegas last weekend. A buddy works over at MGM and was telling us about the new club going in, starts with an H. He couldn't believe it was going to be $20mil to make. He also was mentioned how the entire bottom floor going from the casino to the parking lot was going to be turned into bars/clubs and completely changed.

He also mentioned how he had a chance to work at either the Cosmo or MGM when he switched jobs, and said he didn't think the Cosmo in its current state would last much longer.

With that, we had some really awesome hookups and had a good time. I think we were all surprised how dead everything was. He was even surprised as he said MGM was 100% booked and he thought the clubs would be crazy because the Adult awards were in town. We left super early Monday morning, Chinese New year, and maybe everyone was sleeping waiting to come out and play on the Monday.

Right now a Panda Express and a gift shop store are open. I heard a McDonalds was going in but didn't see any evidence of that. They are working on a few other stores but they are not open and I don't remember the names. Looked like clothing type stores.

You'll be able to enter Walgreens on the ground level or the second level where the street crossovers pass through.

Yeah, saw that this weekend. Although I think taking the stairs down to LV Blvd is much quicker instead of walking through that new building to the escalators. My question is more aimed at what is going in on the upper floors? Right now part of it is covered with an American flag poster, and the rest is just empty.

Yeah, the High Roller ferris wheel will be back behind the casinos. The Linq will run from the Strip back to the High Roller. There obviously won't be a new monorail station, since it's being built between the IP and Flamingo, which each already have a monorail station, but I agree it would be really great if you could get to one or both of those stations from the east end of the Linq, instead of having to go through the casinos.

Haven't seen anything that mentions it yet though.

Get a glimpse of the city staff’s new home

City departments begin moving into new, $185 million building this weekend, grand opening set for March 5

Dave Toplikar
Feb. 16, 2012
Las Vegas Sun

Mayor Carolyn Goodman made a sweeping gesture with her hand, pointing out the window of her new seventh-story office in the new Las Vegas City Hall.

"This is our beautiful city, and our mountain ranges and the feeling of everything pulling together through the view that's here," Goodman told reporters Thursday.

Like the majestic view, the new City Hall makes its own "statement" about Las Vegas, she said.

"When people come into our city to see if they want to move here or invest here, they see that we are a place that garners dignity and pride and they want to be part of it," she said.

While construction workers continued doing finishing work, Goodman had just led about a dozen journalists through a tour of the new glassy, futuristic-looking new City Hall building, 495 Main St.

Goodman's desk was still in pieces on the floor of her new southwest corner office. But she was planning ahead, looking out at other recent projects the City Council has pushed to help revitalize downtown.

...

The excitement has been building for city staff, as they prepare to begin moving into the new structure this weekend.

City departments will be moving for the rest of the month out of the 270,000-square-foot City Hall building at 400 Stewart, which will be renovated over the next year and eventually become the corporate campus for Zappos.com.

The city will have an official grand opening ceremony at 6 p.m. on March 5.

The new 310,000-square-foot, $185 million building was developed by Forest City and is being paid for by bonds, including federal Build America Bonds. A public parking garage is located to the west at 500 Main St.

The construction over the last two years generated a little more than 1,900 jobs, according to officials.

It would be very near the classic 1930's art deco original Las Vegas High School building, also on 7th (now the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing, and Visual Arts). Great location for a retro-style building, though, I hope the redesign is more art deco and less classical or colonial.

Any other natives notice that street lights have been getting changed out a lot lately? I personally like the new lights, they are a lot less intense, have less glare and just generally cast a better quality light. I do sort of miss the old ones though for some reason.

Greetings from Germany

The name SLS is just setting this hotel up for a little verbal abuse and a nickname that might spread. After some losing sessions people are going to say gambling there left them Shit out of Luck Son. Not sure I'd want the image of my hotel/casino to leave people thinking their luck is going to suffer when they visit.

I hadn't noticed the street lights changing, but I have noticed left turn lights are changing.

Instead of a green arrow, then a yellow, then a "Yield on solid Green", they've change left turn lanes to green arrow, yellow arrow, red arrow, then yellow flashing arrow if the computer deems it acceptable.

There's an intersection near me that I won't turn left thru any more if there are more then 3 cars waiting. I sat at that light once through 3 cycles. 3 cars got through the first time, and the "yellow flashing" never came on.

On the next cycle, 3 cars got through, and there was only 1 car coming the opposite way. Again, no flashing yellow, even though there was no one in the crosswalk and no oncoming traffic.

Same thing the third time.

I've seen them mostly on the west side, but did see a couple in Henderson recently also.

In principle, a flashing yellow arrow system is way more efficient than a green circle light to allow yielding left turns. If the oncoming traffic has both a green circle and a green arrow, so that your way has to have a red circle light, there's no reason not to let you turn left if no traffic happens to be coming, and there's no better way to do that than with a flashing yellow. It's also safer, and becoming the nationwide standard. However, traffic engineers will have to calibrate them properly. And Las Vegas drivers will have to get used to them: I've seen several times where the flashing yellow arrow comes on at the same time as the red circle light, and the left turn drivers don't turn even when there's no oncoming traffic because they're confused. So it will take a while, but should be better in the long run.

I found a bit more info on Project Linq. I think it may be out dated, but its still interesting.

Great news about the SLS Hotel. I like the fact that they restore old hotels rather than implode and rebuild—not only is it cost-saving it's also green-conscious. I stayed at the SLS Beverly Hills a couple of times and it was a fabulous experience. I'm looking forward to staying at the LV SLS when it opens, it's certain to do wonders for that end of the strip.
