Promising, but don't get your hopes up too high just yet. So far it's just a property purchase. How many times in the past have we seen outside companies buy huge plots of land on the strip for a fantastic new resort, only to realize later that they bit off more than they can chew and nothing gets built? In the past thirty years not one single resort on the strip was developed by a company that wasn't already established in Nevada (other than the new Aladdin, which promptly went bankrupt, and the Cosmo which the bank took over). Genting says they are going to scale up the project with partners who don't exist yet. That's the same strategy Boyd was using. So it looks like funding for the actual building of the project is not in place yet. That strategy almost killed CityCenter when MGM almost didn't get the funding to finish it. Wynn can be a dick, but he's smart when he said don't start building until all of the funding is in place first. I'm old enough to remember back in the 1970s when construction was still cheap and Vegas resorts would build additional hotel towers with cash straight off the gaming tables. Construction is way too expensive to do that any more.

CIMB Research: Genting's Las Vegas investment a negative surprise

CIMB Research said there will be an option to scale up the investment further with partners at a later point.

"While we were hoping that Genting would broaden its gaming exposure following the sale of its Malaysian power assets for RM2.3bil, RWLV creates a confusing and disjointed corporate structure because the project should be under Genting Malaysia since the US and UK markets were believed to be within Genting Malaysia's jurisdiction.

"Genting Malaysia also has a stronger financial ability to absorb the project. Although Genting has RM2.3bil in cash at the holding company level, it only has RM500mil of operating cashflow a year to meet its equity commitments in its Indonesian power and O&G investments.

"We estimate that Genting will need to inject another RM633mil in equity per annum over the next three years into RWLV. Entering the highly competitive Las Vegas market is also in stark contrast to the group's monopolistic track record," said CIMB Research.

did the Chinese company already took over the land? done deal?

mdiederi
Mar 8, 2013, 7:51 PM
^ Yeah, it's a done deal, they paid cash on March 4th.

The renderings look like they are going to utilize the existing foundations already poured to start with, so they would save some money there and have a head start.

If construction really starts up I wonder if that will spur Carl Icahn to do something with Fontainebleau. He could finish that project a lot faster if he wanted to since the frame and cladding is already in place.

the fontainebleau project shall be done by 2016 along with the chinese theme mega resort, it makes more sense for everyone involved on the north edge of the strip. hopefully itll be new good times for this area, considering reconstruction of sahara and remodeling of riviera. someday a walk along north las vegas blvd wont be so unpleasant and kind of dangerous experience during the night

I like the color of the facade on the Resorts World rendering better than the proposed Echelon color. I don't know how much of an attraction a Great Wall replica in the front will be, usually big blank walls don't have good feng shui.

I wonder if construction will start before they get approved to operate in Nevada? Genting doesn't have a gaming license in Nevada yet and the process to get one can take a lot of time.

there's no new development regarding stalled fountainbleu yet. may be completed in a few years? yeah, it's common sense. nevada's tallest building won't be always 'under construction'. build it or just blow it away already!

I was just in Vegas and spoke to a friend who works at MGM Grand. He was excited telling me about the new arena coming in. Funny I thought he said 20,000 seats though. He also mentioned to take pictures of the current New York New York, because the Statue of Liberty would be gone within a year. Kind of wish I had a chance to ask him more questions, but we was much more excited talking about the fight.

A casualty of the recession finally has a pulse.

Five years after construction flatlined at Wyndham Vacation Resorts’ Desert Blue, the company has restarted work on the 19-story, 281-unit timeshare on Twain Avenue just west of Interstate 15.

Wyndham officials said Friday they couldn’t offer any details on the project, except to say it’s early in construction.

“We’re trying to get movement started,” said Wyndham spokeswoman Lindsay Graham.

Workers crawled all over the curved tower Friday morning.

A proposed roller coaster.

A few thoughts...first, this roller coaster looks SICK. I'm SO there if/when it is built.

That being said, I've been having a thought creep in a lot lately regarding the recent developments coming to Vegas, and I think this was the kicker that makes me want to discuss it a little with SSP forumers. It has been irking me that between the two observation wheels planned and under construction, the arena, and now this coaster, is it just me or is Las Vegas turning into a city-sized amusement park?

It's an odd concern for me because I want Vegas to see a real revival, and these attractions will definitely add to the miles-long list of things to do on LV Boulevard, and they will draw throngs of visitors...but I'm hoping that this isn't all we'll ever see from here on in. I worry that these quick-money attractions are being prioritized over looking into building new resorts.

I do understand it's easier to get a loan for a roller coaster than it is for a billion-dollar megaresort that may or may not make money with all the competition already present. I just hope that the Vegas resort isn't on track to becoming an endangered species. Even when the Stratosphere was built, not only was it a unique addition to Vegas at the time, but it too came along with some hotel rooms and a casino.

It's ironic too, because for years I felt the best way to describe Vegas to people who'd never been was "a city-sized amusement park for adults." Now I'm eating my words. :ahhh:

^^^ It's not a new idea. Circus Circus started the whole Vegas amusement park/architectural follies idea way back in 1968. Ever since, every few years a new wave of family-oriented attractions are developed on the strip. They're popular for awhile, and then usually upgraded to something more sophisticated later ... or torn down. MGM Grand originally had a hundred-acre amusement park behind the hotel — all gone within a few years.

I suppose you're right. Thanks for that, I did forget about Circus Circus' Adventuredome and the MGM Grand park. I suppose these latest attractions are just another iteration of Vegas' ridiculous glamour. I'm sure I can live with it. That being said, I CANNOT WAIT for Resorts World to begin again. I can only hope that the resuscitation of the Fontainebleau is just around the corner.

Looks like they're finally building the rim of the High Roller at the Linq. In the LiveCam you can see a cable attached to a section of white tube just left of center as you look towards the bottom of the structure.

Unfortunately I'm way to busy this week to drive over there and get a closer look, if anyone else is in the area can you get pics? You can get pretty close behind the parking garage of The Quad.

As Oscar Wilde would say: Simple pleasures are the last refuge of the complex!:D

Let's not forget the aging baby boomers going through their life cycles: You start out as an infant, progress to childhood, adulthood, and then it starts reversing itself. So good timing! The aging baby boomers will love this, being a child again! I would even like to see them take one of those empty lots and create one large playground with a merry-go-round, swings and slides.

Let's not forget that this is Entertainment City USA, and entertainment is entertainment!

And what to do next in a city built on gambling where now, only 27% of the people come here to gamble anymore!!!

I also like the idea, still in progress, of swing rides on wires between the casino's!

Las Vegas Convention Center proposed expansion....

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority today approved the concept and the first phase of a $2.5 billion overhaul of the Las Vegas Convention Center that includes a World Trade Center building and a multimodal transportation center.

The board voted unanimously to back what is being called the Las Vegas Global Business District, which would be developed over eight to 10 years.

It would be the first major expansion of the 54-year-old Convention Center in more than a decade.

For 18 years the Las Vegas Convention Center is the leading trade destination in the US. To take on the competition, LVCVA is embarking on a $2.5 billion major renovation. It would be interesting to see most if not all of what has been shown on these renderings. LVCVA has acquired large parcels of land around the convention center, certainly LVCVA can accomodate the expansion.

Lady Luck<Downtown Grand

http://www.lasvegas.com/listing/downtown-grand-casino-and-hotel/176/
Downtown Grand Las Vegas is scheduled to debut in late October 2013. It's located at Stewart and Ogden avenues in downtown Las Vegas, just two blocks from Fremont Street Experience and a short stroll from the hip bar scene in the Fremont East Entertainment District.

Formerly known as the Lady Luck, Downtown Grand is being developed by CIM Group and operated by DTG Las Vegas Manager LLC and Fifth Street Gaming.

It's comprised of two towers -- the 17-story Casino Tower (east) and the 25-story Grand Tower (west), which are joined by an elevated walkway. Together, they house 650 rooms and suites that range in size from 350 to 1,200 square feet. All of them provide sophisticated and stylish accommodations for downtown visitors. Guests will also enjoy 42-inch flat-screen TVs with cable channels and have free wireless internet access.

The 30,000-square-foot casino floor at Downtown Grand features an industrial chic décor and cool brick façade. It houses more than 600 state-of-the-art slot machines and 30 table games. You can also enjoy the country's only legal "street gaming" experience here.

Among Downtown Grand's dining offerings is a stylish bistro called Stewart+Ogden (or S+O). The race and sports book contains a great New York-style deli called The Spread with a '30s-style ambiance that evokes the movie "The Sting." The Ninth Island, a shave ice and daiquiri bar from Hawaii, has also set up shop on this side of the Pacific Ocean.

Another inventive culinary concept at Downtown Grand is The Commissary. This upscale food court-meets-market has several tenants from Fifth Street Gaming's restaurant portfolio.

Something of an urban rooftop retreat, Picnic is positioned on the parking garage. In addition to the outdoor pool, there is park-like landscaping. Year-round retro-themed events, such as outdoor concerts and movies or just buying a picnic basket to share with your family in the afternoon, are scheduled to take place in this space.

At night, you'll find a lively scene in the Downtown Grand's casino bar Furnace. The Commissary "After Dark" scene will also be a fun place to hang out and be social.

And that's not all. Downtown Grand is at the heart of a much bigger neighborhood: the 10-acre, four-block district known as Downtown3rd, aka "dt³." Downtown3rd aims to offer visitors and locals a pedestrian-friendly, entertainment-oriented experience. Presently, it consists of the cool drinking and dining joints Triple George Grill, Hogs & Heifers Saloon and Mob Bar (complementing the nearby Mob Museum). When Downtown3rd is completed, it will comprise at least 17 different bars and restaurants.

Gansevoort partnership ends, construction unabated....

Caesars Entertainment and Gansevoort end partnership on the Strip

By Robin Leach (contact)

Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 | 3:52 p.m.

....This change will have no impact on the transformation of Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon into a unique boutique nightlife, hospitality and dining experience at the heart of the Las Vegas Strip alongside nightlife impresario Victor Drai and celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis. We look forward to welcoming guests on schedule in early 2014.”

....The good news is that Caesars will continue to move forward with the 185-room luxury project. Our official Gansevoort story and first executive interviews as Caesars formally introduced them to Las Vegas was posted just two weeks ago after our earlier exclusive reports dating back two years.

The planned Italian restaurant with glamorous TV chef Giada and nightlife czar Victor Drai’s nightclub and daytime pool venue are still set for April openings.

City council approves extension of negotiations for downtown arena

http://imageshack.com/a/img713/9454/lxca.jpg
http://imageshack.com/a/img268/6019/h5ti.jpg

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- On a split vote, the Las Vegas City Council extended an exclusive negotiating agreement with the Cordish Companies to develop an arena in downtown Las Vegas.

The vote took place at the city council meeting on Wednesday.

The four-month extension sets key business terms that would be used to try to reach a development agreement.

If a development agreement is reached, and approved by the city council, plans would move ahead for a $390 million arena with at least 18,000 seats in Symphony Park.

Plans also call for a live entertainment district with retail and dining offerings.

he estimated economic impact from the arena development is more than $400 million, with 4,500 construction jobs.

Estimated economic impact from arena operations is $700 million in total output spent annually, 10,300 new jobs and $30 million in new taxes collected.

The arena has been part of a decade-long discussion and vision for downtown and has been one of the three key elements (academic medicine, performing arts and professional sports) of the downtown revitalization the city has pursued over time.

Two on North Strip. SLS is turning the Sahara into a new hotel. And a huge Malaysian conglomerate is developing the delayed Echeleon Place into a massive new Asian-themed, City-Center esque development called Resorts World. Mid-Strip, the old Bill's is being turned into an upscale hotel called the Cromwell.

what about the site by the Trump Hotel?

You mean the empty lot where the New Frontier used to be? I have not heard of any plans for it. And Trump won't be building a second tower, they can't even sell the units in the first tower they still have.

If you are talking about the partially built site north of Desert Inn Road, that is the former Echelon Place site being taken over by the Malaysian group.

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
The 550-foot High Roller wheel at the heart of the Las Vegas Strip opened to the public Monday after welcoming its first riders over the weekend.

... The High Roller, which is also touted as the world's tallest observation wheel, boasts 28 pods that can hold 40 passengers each.

... The build-up to the wheel's opening included hours-long transports of each 44,000-pound cabin from a warehouse to the Linq. The wheel is held together by 112 massive cables at 225 feet long each. In all, 7.2 million pounds of steel were used to build the wheel.

... A daytime general admission ticket starts at $24.95, while a nighttime standard ticket costs $34.95.

... Caesars expects between 4 million and 5 million riders within the first year of operation.

... "If they choose to charter a private cabin, we can roll a bar on there for them and have full-service. We anticipate proposals, and we have actually had one already," said Eric Eberhart, general manager of the High Roller.

... "It doesn't feel like a ride, it feels like you are floating in the beautiful structure. For anyone who's worried about heights, I would say give it a try. You're going to be very happy with it," said David Codiga, executive direct [stet] for Linq and High Roller.

Economic hope seen in North Las Vegas masterplanned community

http://www.reviewjournal.com/sites/default/files/field/media/web1_nlvhighlands_041914JL_01.jpg

North Las Vegas leaders first signed off on blueprints for the massive Park Highlands master planned community in 2006.

Eight years, two bankruptcies and one recession later, plans to break ground on the 2,600-acre community near Aliante Parkway and the Las Vegas Beltway are alive and well, if heavily revised.

The 15,000-home development — billed as “one of the few remaining large-scale development opportunities in the Las Vegas area” — counts as the largest master planned community set to visit the Las Vegas Valley since the start of the Great Recession.

Four separate developers expect to sink $3.2 billion into the project over the next 10 to 15 years, working more or less concurrently on parallel master plans first presented to City Council members on Wednesday. City leaders expect to put those development agreements to a final vote on May 21.

Contractors already have grounded utilities and storm drains throughout the westernmost master plan, where two development companies hope to dig into 4,000 homes on 600 acres between Decatur Boulevard and Aliante Parkway by the end of the year.

A different pair of commercial and residential landowners hope to start putting up 11,000 homes on 2,000 less-developed acres in the easternmost master plan by 2015, development representative Bob Gronauer told the city council last week.

MGM Resorts, Cirque to build 33-acre, open-air venue to host Rock in Rio in Las Vegas

Rock in Rio, one of the world’s largest music festivals, is set for Las Vegas in May 2015 and is a partnership among MGM Resorts International, Cirque du Soleil, billionaire Ron Burkle (who owns the Fresh & Easy grocery story chain here) and Roberto Medina, who founded the headliner concerts 30 years ago.

MGM plans to transform 33 acres of prime real estate near Sahara Avenue and its property Circus Circus into a permanent City of Rock open-air concert venue to host the first Rock in Rio USA with a daily capacity of 80,000 people to view five stages.

Bill Hornbuckle, president of MGM Resorts International, said: “It will serve as a major tourism driver for Las Vegas expected to draw well over 300,000 people to our city over the four days of the concert.

“The entertainment scene has changed dramatically in recent years as has the way consumers want to experience their entertainment. With our innovative new partners at Rock in Rio and the creative geniuses at Cirque du Soleil, we will introduce Las Vegas to an unprecedented music festival in a setting that will never be replicated.”

Gaming Control Board urges Genting Berhad be found suitable for state gaming license
http://www.reviewjournal.com/business/casinos-gaming/gaming-control-board-urges-genting-berhad-be-found-suitable-state-gaming

The Nevada Gaming Control Board on Wednesday recommended that Malaysia-based Genting Berhad be found suitable to hold a state gaming license, which will lead the way to development of the $4 billion Resorts World Las Vegas.

The Nevada Gaming Commission will take up the matter on May 22. Genting will still need to apply for a full gaming license before Resorts World Las Vegas can open.

Genting representatives told the control board during a more than two-hour presentation they would expect to start construction of Resorts World this year on the 87-acre Strip location and the site of the former Stardust. The company plans to incorporate 80 percent to 85 percent of the Echelon buildings into the Resorts World development.

The Sad Saga of Norman Foster's Half-Built Vegas Hotel :(

http://curbed.com/uploads/1024px-City_Center-July2009-thumb.JPG

When the Norman Foster-designed Harmon Hotel broke ground in 2006, the mixed-use Las Vegas complex was set to include 49 stories, 400 hotel rooms, and 207 luxury residences, with a long list of amenities, among them a Mr. Chow's restaurant and Frederick Fekkai salon. It was to be the largest of Foster + Partner's U.S. projects up to that point, and the shining blue-glass setpiece of MGM Resort International's CityCenter complex, a 16,700,000-square-foot $8.5B development that, in a too-perfect example of booming pre-recession development, was boasted as the largest privately funded construction project in U.S. history. How the Harmon ended up slated for demolition, after sitting half-built on the Vegas Stip for nearly six years, is a story of bungled construction and tangled litigation for the ages.

[...]

Though Foster's renovation plans for the New York Public Library were widely criticized, the period leading up to their recent rejection was mercifully short compared to that of the Harmon. Better if it had gone the way of NYC's New Globe Theater or Seattle's Civic Square tower, which have been left in the planning stage for years and caught up in development wrangling, respectively, but still appear rather hopefully on Foster + Partner's list of U.S. projects. Naturally, the Harmon has been removed from the list, but the real thing won't be removed until this summer. MGM has yet to announce what will replace it in the 76-acre master plan.

Las Vegas could get pro soccer team, downtown stadium

http://photos.lasvegassun.com/media/img/photos/2014/05/14/soccerstadium_t653.jpg?214bc4f9d9bd7c08c7d0f6599bb3328710e01e7b

Las Vegas could be getting a Major League Soccer franchise.

Findlay Sports and Entertainment and The Cordish Companies today announced plans to build a 24,000-seat stadium downtown at Symphony Park. The stadium would be designed specifically for a pro soccer team.

Cordish has been in a development contract with Las Vegas since 2008 to build a stadium at the 61-acre site and negotiate with professional leagues for a team to play there. The park already includes the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

The agreement between Cordish and Las Vegas expires May 31. During the May 21 City Council meeting, the Cordish and Findlay groups plan to ask for an extension and request a change to the proposal to include both organizations.

An official from MLS confirmed discussions to bring a franchise to Las Vegas.

“We recently met with Justin Findlay and Blake Cordish at the MLS League office in New York and were very impressed with their vision to pursue building a new soccer stadium and acquiring an MLS expansion club for Las Vegas,” MLS Deputy Commissioner and President Mark Abbott said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing discussions as they work to further develop their plans with Mayor Goodman and the City of Las Vegas.”

Howard Hughes Corp. announces Oct. 9 opening for Downtown Summerlin

HF2wwit0I1c

A year after the Howard Hughes Corp. broke ground on Downtown Summerlin, a 1.6 million-square-foot retail and shopping environment near Sahara Avenue and the 215 Beltway, the company announced an Oct. 9 opening for the development.

Downtown Summerlin will house more than 125 stores and restaurants, a five-screen movie theater, mid- and high-rise condos and luxury apartments, as well as One Summerlin, a nine-story office building.

“There’s no other community like this in the country,” David Weinreb, CEO for Howard Hughes Corp., said Thursday at a tour through the project for community leaders, key figures in the development process and the media. “This is a place where fashion meets the rock, and we will be an unparalleled fashion, entertainment and dining destination.”

Trader Joe’s, Sephora, Michael Kors, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Sushi Loca, and Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill are among the more than 60 stores and restaurants that have signed on to be a part of Downtown Summerlin along with Regal Cinemas. More retail will be announced as the project develops.

Downtown Summerlin will also be the first location for many retailers such as Boston Proper, b. young and MacKenzie-Child’s Boutique, according to Weinreb.

The 400-acre shopping development’s design is centered on pedestrian thoroughfares with plenty of shade throughout, he added.

“We don’t see it as a mall; we see it as a downtown,” Weinreb said. “Why go to a mall when you can drive down here, park your car and walk into a store?”

Stone, steel and various metal facades will provide a contemporary feel to the area, said Tom Warden, senior vice president for community and government relations for Hughes Corp.

“We plan to pay a subtle nod to our true Las Vegas heritage, which will be created through interest and color,” he said.

The property on which Downtown Summerlin is being built has been slated to be the community’s downtown area since the 1980s when the master-planned community was designed, Warden said.

“This area was always going to be the downtown; however, the look of it has evolved over the years,” he said. “This area is perched along the 215 and is close to Sahara (Avenue) and West Charleston (Boulevard), so it’s easy to get to.”

Approximately 6,000 acres have been dedicated to housing development, specifically mid- and high-rise condos and luxury apartments. Construction will begin this fall on a three-story, 124-unit multifamily residential development that is slated to open in spring 2015.

Tech insurance company to open 800-job office in Las Vegas

A company that insures cell phones and other tech devices is expected to announce plans to open a service call center in Las Vegas that would provide up to 800 jobs within five years.

Representatives of Nashville, Tenn.-based Asurion LLC would initially provide 500 jobs when it opens in the next few months in 90,000 square feet of the Montecito Point office complex near U.S. Highway 95 and the Las Vegas Beltway in northwest Las Vegas.

Asurion made a presentation to the Governor’s Office of Economic Development requesting tax incentives in January and recently determined that it would expand in Las Vegas.

“It was Nevada’s location and business-friendly environment that first drew our attention, but it will be incentives that close the gap between prospective locations,” Paul Fassbender, Asurion’s director of public policy and economic development write in a letter to Steve Hill, the state’s economic development director. “This project will require the hiring of 500 full-time employees at an average wage of $15.63 in our first year of operations.”

New life being breathed into locals gaming market

[...]

Much of the news surrounding the gaming industry’s economic recovery has focused on the Strip.

Companies such as MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment Corp. are spending a combined $1 billion to create large outdoor retail, nightlife and entertainment districts, each highlighted by a centerpiece attraction. For MGM Resorts, a 20,000-seat sports arena and events center will anchor The Park by 2016. In April, Caesars opened the 550-foot-tall High Roller observation wheel as the focal point of The Linq.

Notice gaming is not the focus.

MGM Resorts is upgrading New York-New York and Monte Carlo as part of The Park, but is not adding new gaming areas. Caesars moved and downsized the shuttered O’Shea’s Casino to become part of The Quad.

The main point is to drive nongaming spending by customers.

The locals market has gotten the hint.

Station Casinos is spending $55 million to upgrade its restaurants, nightlife and other amenities at its flagship Red Rock Resort and Green Valley Ranch Resort.

Boyd Gaming Corp. executives said during the company’s first-quarter earnings call that a retooling of restaurant offerings at its Coast Casinos and Sam’s Town is being considered.

The idea is to build off the business being created by the Strip, which often translates into increased business in the locals market.

Grand Bazaar Shops is an outdoor shopping mecca coming to life at the heart of the Las Vegas Strip in Fall 2014.

Grand Bazaar Shops is located at the busiest pedestrian intersection in the city — Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road — directly in front of Bally’s, across from the Fountains of Bellagio, and surrounded by Flamingo Las Vegas, Paris Las Vegas,
and Caesars Palace – on a site that more than 20 million people walk through annually (over half of the city’s annual
tourist population).

Designed as a “21st-century bazaar,” Grand Bazaar Shops is an immersive retail and dining experience located directly on the Strip that captures the essence and excitement of the world’s greatest open-air markets: among them, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, Jerusalem’s Old Market, London’s Portobello Road, Seattle’s Pike Place Market and Morocco’s Marrakesh Souk.

With approximately 150 shops over two acres, along with a breadth of food, dining and bar venues, Grand Bazaar Shops invites travelers and locals alike to discover its many rare and wonderful treasures. Some of its tenants will be distinguished by iconic design features and many others will be the first of their kind in Las Vegas, the U.S. or worldwide.

Special attractions will include a vibrantly-colored rooftop design that will become a prominent feature of the iconic Las Vegas skyline and a giant crystal starburst that creates a celebratory New Year’s Eve experience every midnight.

I've always liked the plaza out front of Bally's, but it never really made an sense. This will allow it to make sense. It's a great location, too, being right across from all of the crowds that the Bellagio's fountains create.

DETAILS LEAK FOR A SKYSCRAPING DREAM IN DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS
http://lasvegasweekly.com/as-we-see-it/2014/jun/05/details-leak-skyscraping-dream-downtown-las-vegas/#.U5RhXthq4YE.facebook

Thanks to a source involved in the project, we have a first look at this rendering of what the corner of Sixth and Fremont could become. Architecturally spearheaded by Ziad Khan of Langdon Wilson International (the firm designed the Federal Building Downtown as well as Tahiti Village on the Strip), the planned tower is reportedly 40 stories tall, with 200 live-work spaces and 200 more devoted to high-end hospitality. Inside, the hotel’s aesthetic will be crisp white with tinges of rock ’n’ roll, like Anvil casing details amid polished marble and glittering chandeliers. Under the tower, a 50,000-square-foot convention center will cantilever over the existing property. And on Sixth Street, a porte cochère will replace the old parking lot.

Our source says ground studies are nearing completion on the project, which will cost around $150 million and be formally announced sometime in the next 90 days. If green-lighted by the City of Las Vegas, the tower could be ready for tenants and guests within the next two years. It's tentatively called "The Central," echoing the name of the network that will precede it. That project is expected to go live within the next year, and combines the firepower of nightlife impresario Big Daddy Carlos Adley and his wife and business partner Ava Berman, music promoter Michael Chugg, MMA veteran Dave Brock, TLC Casino Enterprises CEO Terry Caudill and Trifecta Entertainment CEO Hank Cohen to offer on-demand, niche entertainment experiences. (Netflix on steroids, anyone?)

The market is picking up. Projects are coming back to life. Right now, a lot of the major projects involve large scale renovations for Casinos and entertainment venues. There are a lot of developments when it comes to apartment complexes, but they are not neccesarly highrises. Within the 4-6 story range, and are ussually on the edge of Vegas. There have been developments when it comes to warehouses, and office parks. But thats no fun :(.

Then theres also Resort World Las Vegas which will be huge. But in terms of residential towers, we will have to wait and see. Vegas is very turbulent when it comes to the economy, but recent articles from Forbes and within development sites point to the area experiencing modest growth, and its likely to speed up in the next couple of months. Tourism on the other hand is increasing. Likewise, traffic flow, and population growth. All of which will be catalysts for growth.

The SLS Las Vegas arrival comes seven years after the Great Recession ravaged Las Vegas.

Now, our economy is in a recovery and the team that brokered the SLS property deal says more economic progress is on the way.

The street will always be named Sahara, but the legendary hotel that stood here for 58 years is history.

Once Friday night becomes Saturday morning, the doors at SLS Las Vegas open to the public, ushering in a new era on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Avenue, and experts say for this part of the Strip, a new economic era.

Las Vegas knows how to reinvent itself. Julia Rothwell has been coming for 15 years, and each visit is new and different.

Developers behind Major League Soccer proposal estimate $1.2 annual profit

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2014/aug/29/developers-behind-major-league-soccer-proposal-est/

A downtown stadium for Major League Soccer would generate $23.9 million in revenue per year and a profit of $1.2 million, according to a financial analysis released today by the project’s developer.

The estimate includes $10.5 million in ticket sales, based on an average attendance of 18,000 people per game. The MLS average attendance for Major League Soccer was 18,523 fans per game, according to ESPN.

Another $8.3 million would come from naming rights and sponsorship, $3.7 million would come from concessions and merchandise sales, and $1.4 million would come from parking fees and other special events, according to the analysis released by Findlay Sports & Entertainment.

Let the speculation begin.

Las Vegas housing market going big — as in master-planned — again

No one expects a glut of new subdivisions anytime soon; the master-planned communities will be built in phases and aren’t scheduled to be finished for at least a decade. Nowadays, developers often build homes only after people agree to buy them, as opposed to the boom years when they frequently took out the hammers and hard hats without buyers lined up.

“Everyone’s more conservative,” said Klif Andrews, Las Vegas division president for Pardee Homes.

But if all goes as planned — and that’s a big “if” in economically wobbly Southern Nevada — the massive communities would bring up to 45,000 new homes to the region.

Projects would steer billions of dollars of work to the local construction industry, stretch the sprawled-out valley even more and likely raise concerns about water use in the parched region.

Las Vegas has some of the best-selling master-planned communities in the country, and local developers say there are few sites big enough where they can build a community from scratch with a range of amenities.

“We are running out, in the Las Vegas Valley, of quality home sites,” said Garry Goett, chairman and CEO of the Olympia Cos., a local development firm.

Cadence, at 2,200 acres, would have up to 13,250 homes, 1.1 million square feet of retail and a 1,500-room resort. Homebuilders are expected to start grading land this week.

Here’s a list of the 10 biggest Southern Nevada projects

Over the next three years, 10 Southern Nevada projects will have $12 billion in capital expenses and spur economic development throughout the valley.

1. Resorts World Las Vegas, Strip resort project — $4 billion

It’s a 3,000-room resort by the Genting Group at the former site of the Stardust and Echelon. It would be the first Strip megaresort to be built in Las Vegas in close to seven years.

2. Las Vegas Global Business District, Las Vegas Convention Center refurbishment — $2.3 billion

In a bid to attract the international business community, the Convention Center overhaul would include a home for the World Trade Center and incorporate a transportation hub to accomodate several modes of transportation, including buses, taxis, the Las Vegas Monorail and, possibly, light rail.

3. Project Neon, Spaghetti Bowl freeway interchange project — $1.8 billion

The state’s largest public works project will include the redesign of several freeway exits and the construction of high-occupancy-vehicle flyover bridge designed to ease traffic on the merge of southbound U.S. Highway 95 to southbound Interstate 15 as well as its northbound counterpart.

4. Union Village, integrated health village in Henderson — $1.4 billion

Tabbed as the largest integrated healthcare facility in the world, ground has been broken on the 158-acre project that would include a world-class hospital complex and health center, residential, entertainment and specialty retail space, a senior retirement community and a civic and cultural arts center integrated into a master-planned community.

5. Switch, digitally connected data storage center — $1 billion

The expansion of the Supernap project in Southern Nevada is being coupled with similar facilities in Reno, Northern California and Southern California. When completed, it would be the largest looped data system in the country.

6. First Solar, solar power plant near Primm — $1 billion

You can’t miss seeing the massive field of mirrors and towers in the desert straddling the Nevada-California border.

7. Downtown Summerlin, retail center by Howard Hughes Corp. — $500 million

The first phase of Downtown Summerlin has already opened. Located next door to the Red Rock Resort, the center also may someday be home to the home of a AAA baseball stadium for the Pacific Coast League Las Vegas 51s.

8. MGM/AEG Arena, MGM Resorts International’2 20,000-seat stadium — $375 million

Located just west of the New York-New York property at Interstate 15 and Tropicana Avenue, the arena, already under construction, will handle large entertainment events, boxing matches and maybe, someday, a National Hockey League or National Basketball Association franchise.

9. Interstate 11-Boulder City bypass, state highway project near Boulder City — $350 million

It’s destined to be the first piece of Interstate 11, a freeway linking the two largest cities without an interstate highway connection, Phoenix and Las Vegas. Decades from now, it will be a portion of the Canamex Highway linking Canada and Mexico, serving as a primary route for goods arriving at ports in Mexico.

10. Las Vegas Soccer Stadium, downtown facility promoted by City of Las Vegas — $200 million

Currently the subject of political controversy, the 24,000-seat stadium on 13 acres in downtown’s Symphony Park would be a partnership between the City of Las Vegas, The Cordish Cos., and Findlay Sports & Entertainment. If built, it would be the home of the city’s first major-league sports franchise, a team in Major League Soccer.

Same old excuses, they're refining and refining the details!

It's more than obvious they're in no hurry whatsoever to get this project built! If they knew, all along, this was going to be a big money maker for them, this project would have been finished by now!

Las Vegas implosion takes down the off-strip Clarion casino

http://pics.mcclatchyinteractive.com/wire_photos/88zuzv/picture9660653/ALTERNATES/FREE_960/Casino%20Implosion%20Vegas.JPEG

With a 4,400-pound explosive punch, a Las Vegas hotel turned into a pile of rubble early Tuesday.

The 12-story Clarion casino-hotel became the 13th hotel to gain implosion infamy in a town that explodes the old to make way for the new.

"Hopefully 13 will be a lucky number," Lorenzo Doumani, the site's new owner and developer, said a few hours before he and his family counted down to the Clarion's final seconds at nearly 3 a.m., flanked by two showgirls and having listened to a pre-implosion soundtrack of Frank Sinatra.

The 200-room casino-hotel opened in 1970 as the Royal Inn and was called the Debbie Reynolds — for its one-time owner — as well as the Greek Isles and the Paddle Wheel.

These are some of the biggest projects currently, and other projects are the ones in the posts I listed above, all in this thread btw.

The real estate market is picking up in terms of hotels and even some residential, so 2015 should see some new developments.

In terms of condos, its not booming so you won't find a pre-recession like list.

More about the Business District Proposal:

==========================

Las Vegas Kickstarts Its Biggest Business Travel Development in 60 Years

http://skift.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/vegas.jpg

In order to meet the demand of Las Vegas’ growing business travel market, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is currently working on a proposal to develop an expanded conference and events hub.

The $2.3 billion Las Vegas Global Business District will be the LVCVA’s largest economic development initiative since the Las Vegas Convention Center was built in the late 1950s.

The Las Vegas Convention Center currently operates at capacity and, according to the LVCVA, many large clients express interest in expanding their shows. Attracting new events and conventions is another primary motivator for building a new space.

The project includes two phases, which includes an exhibit and supporting meeting space followed by a renovation of the existing convention center for a total 1.8-million-square-foot expansion. The total facility, including public and service areas, would extend nearly 5.7 million square feet by its completion.

Although news of the expansion is generating buzz, it would be five to eight years before the two-phase project is completed.

The initiative was announced in late 2014, but the first steps towards turning it into a reality are just starting.

A proposal to acquire the Riviera Hotel & Casino will be presented to the tourism board’s board of directors Friday to kickstart the organization’s land acquisition strategy.

Failed stadium project looms large for Las Vegas municipal election

This year's municipal election in Las Vegas will largely come down to how voters feel about a single issue — failed plans for a $200 million downtown soccer stadium.

Three incumbents — Mayor Carolyn Goodman and Councilmen Ricki Barlow and Bob Coffin — running for re-election helped pass a package worth nearly $100 million in city funds and land to help build the stadium at Symphony Park.

Although those plans fell apart when Major League Soccer told Las Vegas last month it would not be receiving an expansion franchise that was a prerequisite for building the stadium, the debate about the project has lingered into campaign season.

Goodman, Barlow and Coffin insist the project is dead, a missed opportunity to boost further redevelopment in the city's rebounding urban core.

But to their opponents, the stadium debate and the public funding associated with it has provided a ready made issue to challenge the incumbents on.

But that still might not be enough to overcome the edge in fundraising and name recognition held by the incumbents.

A total of four council seats will be on the April 7 primary ballot, headlined by a showdown between Goodman, who's trying to stretch her family's hold on the mayor's office to a fifth term, and City Councilman Stavros Anthony, who has made his opposition to the stadium the central issue of his campaign.

Early voting for the Las Vegas primary election starts on Saturday and runs through April 3. The races in Ward 1 and Ward 5 will be settled in the primary because only two candidates are running. The mayoral race and Ward 3 contest might not be settled until the June 2 general election if no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary.

Pipeline key to water supply for NLV Apex project

Big promises of more than 100,000 jobs and nearly $200 billion of economic impact over a 20-year period is attached to the development of the Apex Business Park in North Las Vegas.

"Apex is the project that will set us and the whole region apart from where we are today," said North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee in a conference on Jan. 27, 2015.

However, the question of whether or not there will be enough water to support the project lingers over the Apex development. Ledcor Construction completed a $150,000 study to figure out how to get as much as seven million gallons of water per day at peak demand to the 18,000-acre site located off of I-15.

Mayor Lee said an 18 mile pipeline will go out to the Apex site. The $100 million pipeline will bring the water from two locations near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to the Apex site. The water will also come from within the existing water system in the city of North Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Chief of Staff Ryann Juden said there will be enough water to sustain the project without putting a strain on the North Las Vegas infrastructure.

Developers of the $375 million arena behind New York-New York on the Strip have signed two major global brands — Toshiba and Coca-Cola — as founding sponsorship partners for the venue that is scheduled to open in April 2016.

In addition, Toshiba’s agreement with the arena development partnership of MGM Resorts International and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) also includes a naming rights partnership for the 2-acre plaza being built outside the arena’s main entrance.

Toshiba Plaza will include outdoor entertainment space for a stage and video screens while providing an area for festivals, concerts and holiday celebrations.

Toshiba and Coca-Cola join Schneider Electric, a Paris-based energy management company, as founding partners. MGM-AEG is aiming to have eight to 10 founding partners, a small cluster of major sponsors instead of a large number of smaller sponsors. The arena is still working on getting a naming rights sponsor for the 20,000-seat building.

Founding partners receive prominent signage, luxury suites, ticket access and customized sponsorship plans that allow the company to showcase its products and services.
