Is the Royal Blue Grocery at 360 in addition to the one at 3rd & Lavaca, or is that one moving to this new location?

A few weeks ago I asked a clerk at the current RBG the very same question. Her reply was that the new location would be in addition to the current one--not a relocation. She also said that the 360 location would be significantly larger and have a greater selection of prepared foods.

It's actually a friends' whom I recommend the 360 too. They are discuraged from bringing others to the walk through but they don't care.

If I were to buy downtown I would buy in the Austonian.:haha:

I'll make sure to take a few shots.

360 looking good. Almost looks a little unreal:

The Frost tower is almost completely obscured now from this angle:

Spring becoming a little more noticeable:

Ha ha! The children's museum dressed up their "kids" in construction outfits:

I don't know if they actually raised the crane at the Austonian today (didn't hang around long enough to see), but they were definitely setting up for it:

Killer photos guys!

Jam, those skyline shots are so cool. I think Raining Inside may be right about that view being the new adopted postcard view of the city.

Really like that 360 reflection on Frost. And 360 itself has some cool reflections too.

And Mike, those pictures down on the water are so pretty. Texas sunsets.

I believe the building to the left of center you see being built is 300 West Sixth. If so... construction began in 2000 and finished in Jan of 2002. So looks like we would be somewhere in 2001!

Yeah, I'd say that's sometime in 2001. To the left is 300 West Sixth. The two red and white cranes to its right are for the Intel Building. To the far right are three tower cranes. One of them is for one of the CSC Buildings, the other two are working on AMLI Downtown and City Hall. Near the middle of the picture you can also see a crawler crane. That one is putting up the tower cranes for Frost Bank Tower. 427MM, my brother and I set out on the sidewalk one day watching them put up the cranes for Frost. That was really neat. The first time I'd seen it done.

Holy $@&%! Kevin - those are like ... Chamber of Commerce photos! And I loved your vantage points. I've been drooling for about 10 minutes already.

Was that one photo with the columns in the foreground and the skyline in the distance and the other one with the two ladies walking up the sidewalk at the Long center? I've only been on the Barton Springs side of it - to get up into the garage, but I've never really paid attention the part that faces Riverside Dr. I had no idea that big plaza was up there.

Re: The needle on 360's spire - I went back and looked at the rendering on the first page of this thread, and to me, it doesn't look like the needle part is lighted, but it does look like there may be a smaller white light at the tip of the needle.

edited to add - did you happen to notice whether or not the fountains were running at Butler Park and if, so were the colored lights on at all? I've been there several times but on weeknights. The fountains are running, but they're dark. I was thinking maybe they only light it on weekends.

KevinFromTexas
May 6, 2008, 5:59 AM
Thanks, guys.

Yes, that was at the Long Center. That plaza is very, very cool. Do visit it sometime. It's actually quite large, taking up much of the old Palmer Auditorium's footprint.

The fountains were running at Butler Park, but the lights were off. I overheard someone ask someone else if the lights were working, and they said no. I was up there for about 20 or 30 minutes, and I didn't see the lights come on either. And I took these on Saturday.

Maybe someone did mention this and I just missed it, lol. If so, sorry!

I'm blown away by some of these proposals. They all look pretty good. Catellus seems like the weakest one, and even that one would be pretty good. I also LOVE the idea of a full-fledged HEB downtown.

I hope not as well. Don't they have ~ 40 under contract though? And with the cheapest unit at 550k,most expensive going for 5mil+, and average units going for 1mil+, thats somewhere in the 40mil+ sold for total units with ~4mil cash on hand.
The big question is if they can sell floors 30-50 at the floor plans they are using (2-4 units per floor).

By the way guys, you should leave comments for the pictures about the Green site to show support I just left a comment, the first one too. Lets show others out there that there are people who support Vertical development instead of outward sprawl.

I actually like the first rendering in the artical the best only because Im a height whore LOL. The taller they are the more I love them!!! Lets really hope that Laura Morrison does not make it to City Council...

They are trying to combine the old Arby's with the property to the south. The initial proposal is for a 350' building (which we have told 26 story) mixed use tower.

Yes, that was taken at the Long Center. On the south side of the plaza in the middle near the edge, is this round platform with lights in the floor. They actually change color from white, blue, pink, red and orange. Kind of neat. Makes for cool pictures when people walk across it. Neat place to stand and zone out and gaze at the skyline too.

oops. I guess I meant to say that I really like the first rendering on the page. I think it's labeled "mithun." What group is proposing that? Is that the Trammel Crow Proposal? Yes, that is the Trammel Crow proposal. From the renderings, I like the Trammel Crow and Catellus proposals the most. But man, a full service grocery store in downtown, and an HEB no less. Go Stratus! I'm just wondering what their project looks like. And Simmons Vedder is just pathetic. They're the ones that wanted to develop a 15-story building at Block 21. Instead, we're getting a 478 footer.

I have seen him walking down Gobi once...

Really? I guess he must have family or something around here. Kind of seems to be out of his way from downtown. It may still be there, but there used to be a halfway house on Turtle Creek. I'm not sure if it's still there though. We used to have people walking down our street that I figured lived there, but not really anymore.

Hey, there's a Heeler in that pic. Looks a little bigger than the one that I had.

I saw a billboard today, did anyone else see it?

I hope its just temporary and that it makes it point, i think a little tacky but i would think after the Memeorial day weekend it should come down.

Ugly! I can't imagine they'll be doing that when there are actually residents living in those units. That would suck.

Awsome that would be a good boost for the economy it would be cool if we had a medical center that rivaled the one in Houston or San Antonio in size.

So, I had jury duty this morning. I hitched a ride with my aunt and brother on their way to work (they carpool). On the way back, I took the bus and rode my bike. Was really pleasantly surprised to see all the construction in West Campus. 21Rio looked to be up to about the 6th or 7th floor (fleeting glimpse). Checked out Spring and it's taking shape. Legacy looks insane and Altavida is getting up there. I'd say it has about another 150 feet to go before it's topped out. They should be raising the crane soon. And I'm thinking the crane for it may be flirting with 600 feet once the building reaches its full height. Also rode past The Austonian and went over to the Palmer Events Center and Butler Park to fantasize about our growing skyline. No pictures, though. :( But next month I may have to go for jury duty. So after I'm done with it each day, (hopefully not too many days), I'll grab some pics. It'll be the thing that keeps me sane afterwards for sure.

I just noticed this today, while looking at the W's site plan:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3035/2486537243_a315a920b2_o.jpg

Look at the bottom right. Apparently there's an existing tunnel under 2nd street that will connect to the W's underground parking. I knew there was a tunnel under City Hall connecting the 2 CSC buildings, but I didn't know there was another one to the north. Cool!

KevinFromTexas
May 12, 2008, 8:43 PM
Oh yes, I checked out the W too. They were quite busy. That's neat about the tunnel.

And about jury duty, I'm dreading it. I hate formal occasions. Maybe it's just he South Austin in me. :D

Is anyone else going to the 360 grand opening "party"? They're having Ruthie Foster and Alejandro Escovedo play at Austin Music Hall. If you were on their mailing list, you should have gotten two tickets.

The original CSC plan had a third matching building going on the W site, effectively surrounding City Hall on three sides with three matching buildings. I always thought that was a little odd. Glad the master plan was scaled back before the third one could be built.

May 22nd. I don't think it'll be completely open then though. And I noticed, they still aren't even done with all the glass in the spire, unless that's part of the design. As for the lighting up there, I REALLY hope that's not finished yet.

Typically antenna's on top of buildings are lit for safety reasons, due to FAA regulations. Not that 360 has an antenna, but yeah why not have it brightly lit up. Does the word "beacon" come to mind?

I noticed two things in the campus area today:

First they took down the crane for Presidio at Judges Hill over the weekend, that project has taken a long time to get to that point.

Second I think a new crane went up further north, its Yellow, and should be near the 25th street area just west of Guadeloupe. I tried looking it up on the cities website to figure it out and if i am right its just another campus project. Likely in the 4-6 story range.

they are adding on 2-3 floors to a existing parking garage at 25th and san antonio.

Interesting. If that thing moves forward it'll be incredible. It'll end up being one of, if not the biggest skyline changer we've had yet. It may even rival The Austonian in that area, even if it's not as tall. Legacy for instance isn't all that tall, not short, but not real tall, yet has greatly changed the dynamic of our skyline. 21C would be in that same corner of downtown and with the added height, would be a huge boost to the skyline. Probably 640 or 650 feet tall if you go by typical floor heights.

The Austionian is 60 floors (including mechanical and slosh tank floors) and is 683'....I would put 21c at right around 600'...maybe a tad less....still very tall though.

ps- id put the height for the 49 story tower on the upper limits. The guy i spoke with, who might be selling a friend of mine the very first set of units, said that it will have "huge ceilings".

"The building itself is in the final design phases; however, it is currently at 49 stories with high ceilings"

A new version of Google Earth is out and it includes far more models, nearly complete for downtown. I added my own models for the new buildings. The supplied models are very low rez, in some cases I like my own buildings better. But overall it's starting to look fairly realistic.

Yeah, 60, but mechanical floors are never counted officially. Typically only usable "occupied" floors are counted. It's harder to get information for mechanical levels. Frost Bank Tower has 2 mechanical levels above the roof inside the crown. Not sure about other buildings. It's easier to go with occupied floor numbers. So it's usually the accepted method of floor counting.

Though the design is different, the reason I went with 640 feet tall is that the original plan was for a 580 foot, 44-story tower. But the design is different, and the uses will be a bit different in the main tower. Even if it's only 580 or 600 feet, it's still going to be a major building.
