This has been one of my favorite proposals. Glad to see it'll be a supertall, as the only thing lacking in the old design was that there wasn't enough of it.

That was quit an increase. Go Nashville, they need 1,000 ft+ building. I really like the design of this. Looks like it went through a little modification from the original design as well. What's the status?

This is the updated, and final, redesign of the tower. Until told, they are wrong.
For all intensive puroses it is a go. The presell starts in a month or so, the tower has cleared all building hurdles that I know of. Metro has given the okay for the TIF funds for it, just waiting on the sales office to open and all that follows that. Once the right amount of presell occurs, the banks loan the money and the ground starts to move.

The height increase reminds me of Waterview Tower in Chicago which was originally in 800 something feet (if I remember correctly). Weird thing is, they both ended up at exactly 1,047 ft.

It's too thick and bulky to remind me of the the Chrysler Building which is really skinny, it reminds me of a modern day Empire State Building actually. This building will have character like the Sears Tower, Empire State, or the Bank of America Tower in Charlotte all of which are all nice thick/big buildings that really stand out not just from the height, but from their density and charactor as well.

It's beautiful, and the tip reminds me of the building that is going up in Russia, I don't remember what it is called, or if it's still being built.
It's not ground breaking but it's a wicked design. Glad they made it substanially taller as spired buildings are at their best when as tall as possible, since the whole point of a spire is height... or something.

With all due respect, why not? At least tell me why it shouldn't be built here. Personal bias, and uneducated notions aside.
The demand is there for this type of tower in Nashville. If you dont believe me, check out the Nashville Projects thread over in the "City Compilations" section and you would see the numerous amounts of high rise developements taking place as we speak in the city. The number is just boggoling.

The tower was announced over a year ago and it's went through a few design changes. The original design was very tall but pretty boring. A smaller tower with most of the elements of the current design was then unveiled. But I guess with the increase interest in the city for residential highrises (ICON in the Gulch sold out in day!), Tony G. decided to up the ante and make it bigger.
I was skeptical at first considering how much taller Siggy will be than Batman but I'm actually glad it was changed. The type of growth a tower like this can spawn is massive and there are some other Nashville towers rumored to be in the works (whispers are 40-50 stories but who knows). So it's likely if Singature Tower gets build that it won't dwarf the skyline for too long. Possible hotel developments seem to depend on what Nashville decides to do with as far as a new convention center is concerned.
There's still a big "if" though apparently. MDHA has to approve the final design so it's still up in the air. I hope Tony's sell is good and the committee members have a little foresight because a lot of people really want to see this thing go up.

It is about time Nashville received the recognition we deserve. It took a 1047 foot building to get it on this forum and many others, but it's better late than never. We have 1.5 million people, an NHL team, an NFL team, the number 1 relocation city for the past two years, 13 colleges and universities in Davidson County alone, Vanderbilt University, the country's leading healthcare market, now home to Nissan North America, headquarters for Louisanna Pacific, the tallest indoor sculpture in the world with the Goddess Athena at the Parthenon, Nascar and Indy races are held here, and some guy from Baltimore says we don't deserve it?
Maybe it is jelaousy, I don't know, but those who doubt Nashville probably have never been here.
Currently we have 20 buildings over 10 stories being built with more to come and break ground soon. We just topped of a 32 story building in the CBD last week.
A 23 and 25 story tower complex including an Intercontinental Hotel breaks ground in June.

The rendering and the numbers will be officially published in the Nashville City Paper this Tuesday I believe. www.nashvillecitypaper.com
The hole will be 100 feet deep, but since there was a building on that site previously, the first 25 feet are fill dirt covered in asphalt for the surface parking lot. The excavation will take six months and we will see caissons or piles by October 2007. Some units will be available in 2008, and the total completion will be in late 2009.

Anybody know what the height to the roof is? 1047 feet is awfully tall for a 65 storey residential/hotel building, so I get the impression that the spire on this building is quite tall. After all, the 60 storey Living Shangri-La hotel/residential in Vancouver is only 650 feet.
That being said, this is a fantastic design. Congrats to Nashville.

I've got to agree...although it is a bit sad that instead of simply doing some research and taking the time to read up a bit, it takes something superficial like this to force people's perceptions of the city to change. Oh well...as long as it happens somehow I suppose.

With hotel plan, Signature now set for 65 stories
Nashville Business Journal - 8:42 AM CDT Mondayby Janel WatsonNashville Business Journal
http://www.bizjournals.com/nashville/stories/2006/05/01/daily1.html?from_rss=1
Developer Tony Giarratana has added 10 floors of hotel space to his plan for Signature Tower, a move that will make the project taller than New York City's Chrysler Building.
The move raises Signature's height to 1,047 feet and its price tag by more than a third to $275 million. The hotel will have a separate entrance from the residential component and its amenities, which will include a spa, will take up the first three floors of the tower.
Giarratana says he does not yet have an agreement with a hotel operator, but expects to ink one this summer. He says it will be a high-end facility that will draw its share of celebrities.
Giarratana's news comes a week after Alex Palmer announced that he had signed a deal with InterContinental Hotels Group for a hotel that will anchor his $250 million West End Summit project.
Giarratana made his announcement at a reception Saturday night for the 730 people who have registered as interested buyers. Attendees also got a first look at the newest model of the structure as well as marketing materials detailing the layout of each residential floor.
The model and information were made public on Sunday during the 2006 Louisiana-Pacific Live It Up! Downtown Home Tour.
Last November, when Giarratana and Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell announced the approval of a tax-increment financing plan for Signature, plans called for it to house about 500 residential units on 55 floors, 50,000 square feet of street-level retail space and a seven-story parking garage below ground.
Signature's condo count is now 400, which includes 11 units of two-story townhomes. The smallest unit is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit measuring 1,100 square feet. The largest will be 6,000-square-foot custom-designed units that will take up an entire floor on the top six levels.
Giarratana says adding hotel space will not affect the TIF because the hotel will be financed separately. And since the project is in the commercial core zoning district, where there are no height restrictions, no additional approvals were needed to make the addition.
When he first unveiled plans for Signature in 2004, Giarratana was looking to make the tower a mix of hotel, office and residential space. But he says a hotel deal fell through soon after, leading Giarratana to focus on housing alone.
Giarratana says he refocused on the hotel component two months ago because of the synergy between a high-end hotel and Signature's luxury condos. For instance, the hotel housekeeping staff could service the residential units between check-in and check-out times.
Reservations on the units will kick off in conjunction with the 65th Iroquois Steeplechase on May 13. Giarratana is the sole developer of the project and his Giarratana Realty affiliate is the exclusive sales agent. The architect on the project is Atlanta-based Smallwood Reynolds Stewart Stewart & Associates Inc.

Although I won't lie, it is funny to me that there are still people who assume, based on nothing, that Nashville doesn't deserve this and/or that there is no demand for urban living here.
It has nothing to do with deserve. You have to admit, it has not happen yet that a city and metro of Nashville's size has built a supertall. It's a bit unusual, and like many people on this forum, has left me scatching my head. Usually, impressive height is the result of a certain degree of population density (or need for office space) in a very finite land area. Even Philly doesn't have a supertall.
Now I don't know enough about Nashville to comment on the desirability of the location, or the local personality and its desire to live an urban lifestyle.
I will admit that Nashville is not the typical city with a metro of 1.5M. It certainly has a much larger center of gravity than Milwaukee, Columbus, etc. For a city that is generally regarded as an important hub for a segment of American culture, this could be a very good thing. Putting a face on a city (in the form of a skyline) always helps its recognition. And nothing helps ground a skyline like a tall, and beautiful skyscraper.

Great looking tower. After all the construction is done, can they put it on train and drop it off in downtown Minneapolis?

Hehehehehehehehehehe, good point. This does go to show thought that if Nashville can get a supertall we can we, it will happen. ;)

thats beautiful!! Nashville will now have a taller building than LA!
seriously... wtf. is there that much demand? this is definitely a bit of a vanity project. this must be what it felt like to be alive in 1929.
great design though, Philly will gladly trade you for our stubby-ass 975 footer:)

It looks great but why would they build it in Nashville.

Well, "they" is a Nashville native and very ambitious developer and he is doing it because he can and because the demand for urban living in Nashville is through the roof. What more reason does one need? If it's needed, and can be done...why not? This will also provide much needed retail space and a downtown grocery store.

I agree totally. The detractors on here have these misconceptions about Nashville that are almost always baseless probably from TV shows like Hee Haw. The same could be said about why an 871 footer in Charlotte and even a Wachovia that will probably beat 1,000 itself just to stay ahead of Nashville? Or why an 800+ footer in Indianapolis? Or why a Trump Tower in New Orleans?
While I live near Atlanta, I lived in Tennessee for several years and most business related magazines still see Nashville as one of two recent hotspots (Charlotte being the other) but IMO with Nashville having a location advantage and interstate advantage while Charlotte seems to have the edge in business related construction (not sure). I've been to both cities MANY times and Nashville does have a better interstate system.
