First post from my new computer. Maybe more tonight. I might have to upgrade my copy of 3DS, as my version doesn't work perfectly with Vista.

Right now I'm just rendering, because 3DS7 isn't running well enough in Vista to make alterations to the model. The good news is that my new pc renders twice as fast as the old one. I'm thinking about upping some of the detail.

Wow, that's awesome. Is vista better than XP? (Dumb question to ask)

STR

Yes, for the most part, but it has quirks, but they don't outweight the benefits.

It certainly looks better than XP.

Aleks
Aug 23, 2007, 4:43 AM
Sorry to get off the subject but how does a Vista compare to a Mac?

STR
Aug 23, 2007, 4:49 AM
Well, Vista works with the programs I use. Mac does not. So Vista 1, Mac 0.

I did consider buying an apple machine, but only with the idea of installing windows over Mac OS X. But I'm not paying an extra $1,000 for that damn bitten apple logo.

There was a hotel in the WTC?

Yes, when the WTC opened, Building 3 was the Vista Hotel. Eventually the Marriot Hotel Chain bought the Vista. The Hotel was then dubbed: The Marriot at the WTC.

That was one hotel I wished I could have stayed in. :(

STR
Aug 28, 2007, 1:19 AM
There was a hotel in the WTC?

3WTC was one of the largest hotels in the city at the time it was built, it was by far the largest downtown, even in 2001. It was 22 stories high with 800 rooms and a nominal occupancy of 1,000 guests. It was fully rented on 9/11 but was fully evacuated by the time of the collapses. Unfortunately the hotel lobby was chosen as the FDNY command center. Tower 2 basically sliced the building in half, while Tower 1's fall wasted everything else but a small stub on the southern part of the building. Today the large ramp leading into the construction area sits on the former site of the Marriott World Trade Center.

Lets Not Forget, the Marriott Hotel was only 20 Years Old, a 4 Diamond Hotel. In 1993 The World Trade Center Bombing destroyed the parking garage under the tower. The Hotel had to be closed from February 1993 to November 1994. Of course, 9/11 did it in.

What the hell happened? STR your models are excellent, but I cannot look at them without questioning what happened to the real ones.

STR
Oct 3, 2007, 5:30 AM
What happened is exactly what everyone thinks happens. There are side questions, like whether the substandard level of fireproofing, or the structural design itself, had an impact. Don't let your head be filled with ignorant bullshit. The people who peddle that tripe do a disservice to themselves and others.

HOLY FREAKIN shiznutters. Okay those last two look incredibly realalistic. The only concern I have is I think the Twins are a little too reflective, I never recalled seeing reflections on them.

STR
Oct 3, 2007, 9:54 PM
The towers were covered in two materials. 99.9% of the facade was anodized aluminum, which is reflective, but the reflections blur rapidly as you move away from it. As a shortcut, I just turn the reflection almost down to zero. Saves loads of time during renders. The machinery bands, and the lobby was covered in stainless steel, polished to a mirror finish. I'm not happy how that renders, but I'll mess with it later.

Fun 7WTC fact: Tower 7 was technically a "tenant addition" legally no different than if a leaseholder wanted to add a partitioning wall or rewire a a cubicle. It was a steel tube design, not dissimilar from the Twin Towers in concept. The columns, unlike the towers, were extremely irregular, with widely varying spans. The entire office portion of over 40 floors was built over a preexisting ConEd substation, requiring a complex system of transfer columns and floors (not depicted below) to spread the load to foundations sunk into the ground.

What program did you model all this in?
If you're interested, an accurate WTC model such as this might do really well exported into 3D programs such as Poser and DAZ studio- Sites such as ww.contentparadise.com and renderosity.com are extremely popular places to sell one's handiwork. Goddess knows I would love to have my own accurate WTC for my poser characters to run around in.

Unfortunately for me, this version is too old to be any good (the plaza had been completely redone and several floors had been added to the towers), however the rest of you might find this interesting.

This model is based on the above plans.

This was also the ultimate design and rendering in early '62 just before the officials had decided to go with it after looking at over 100 desgn design plans.

No one had thought about putting the antenna atop the North Tower back then.

Nice to see you're posting these again. Are you still planning on building the WFC?

I'm not really doing that much. I got a request via PM on wirednewyork for a shot like that, including the high resolution. I figured it was interesting enough to post. I'd have to finish the WTC proper before I could go to the surroundings. The first thing I'd do wouldn't be the WFC, but Deutsche Bank, as this model is a time capsule and that which no longer exists has highest priority.

The detail in your virtual WTC is quite impressive. The simulated sunlight and shadows really bring them to life. I like the interior views of the lobby with the ray tracing or whatever technology your software uses.

Yeah, it's ray tracing. No other way to make it look that good without really cheating.

Some of the photos taken on 9/11 seem to show that the base of the building sticks out a bit toward the north from the main tower on the west side but not on the east.

I've got a few photos. There was a two lane truck ramp down into the main WTC complex on the northeast corner of 7WTC, the rest of the north face was taken up by the original ConEd substation, which butted out some 20 feet further than the tower.

Hi,

Firstly, I'd like to sincerely appologise for bumping this 2 year old post. However, I had previously downloaded this model from STR before, but that was many PCs and harddrives ago. I am interested in obtaining it, however, reading through the posts it appears STR is charging for the new version. It also occurs to me that STR is no longer active on this forum, otherwise I would have contacted him directly to request this. Does anyone have a copy for version one, the version he had previously released for free?

Thanks,

It's quiet here so perhaps I can help with some images of my real-time model.

http://image.gamebanana.com/ss/maps/_5582-.jpg

I built this model of the WTC complex for the game Counter Strike Source (CS:S) back in 2005.
I spent a month making textures and another month building the map.
There was only photo's on the net to work with back then so it's not perfect but a reasonable likeness.

CS:S was updated so I re-compiled the map to work with the new version (2011).
Being a 3D game engine you can walk and even fly around the map. You don't have to play the game
you can just spectate. Just keep in mind that it's all smoke and mirrors. Only the north tower has internal details.
You can fly to areas on the level that wouldn't be accessed while playing the game and there are holes.

Here's some more images

http://image.gamebanana.com/ss/maps/thm__5587-.jpg (http://image.gamebanana.com/ss/maps/_5587-.jpg) http://image.gamebanana.com/ss/maps/thm__5588-.jpg (http://image.gamebanana.com/ss/maps/_5588-.jpg) http://image.gamebanana.com/ss/maps/thm__5589-.jpg (http://image.gamebanana.com/ss/maps/_5589-.jpg) http://image.gamebanana.com/ss/maps/thm__5590-.jpg (http://image.gamebanana.com/ss/maps/_5590-.jpg)

Or you can download the map for free from GameBanana (http://www.gamebanana.com/maps/screens/154051)
You will need the CS:S game but that can be downloaded for $20 these days.

Rebuilding the towers from scratch, for the first time since I started this project. A bit more detail and a lot easier to manage. Unlike the last time through, I have a full set of blueprints, so it will be a lot more accurate. Bit of trivia: from the absolute tip of the decorative facade to the opposite side is 212'4", from the column face to opposite column face it's 210'10" and 207'8" to column centers, a bit bigger than the new 1WTC's 205' (200' to column center)

You're new here, so I'll put this nicely: Use the edit button. it's annoying to have 4 posts in a row from one guy all posted within an hour of each other. It clutters up threads and makes it harder to keep in order.

Getting back to my project, did some interior work and testing on materials.
The testing and tweaking of materials was interesting, since the building is highly reflective. Just changing the surroundings makes for a marked difference.

wen i look at youre model all the vertical collums are staying vertical even from a distance wen i try that with my model from close they are vertical and wen i zoom out they are starting to swim is it the texturing or the program itself that causes the problem add me on messenger and i show you wat i mean im sorry about the last image i did not now it felt out that huge i made the facade myself and i have printed it out to build a real life model and it realy looks good im giving it to you because you made paper models maibe you could try it also with this one let me now if you like it

I think the word you're looking for is "wave" instead of "swim." What you're seeing is called the Moiré effect, and is occurs when your antialiasing is set too low, or is off.

New Tower 1368'0" to parapet. Old Tower: 1362'0" to Parapet, 1368'7" to roof peak, which rounds out to the tower actually being 1,369 feet tall. Interesting.

yes i called a good frend of me because yesterday amayor problem occure on friday my computer wil be checked and repared new parts wil be instaled also to get it faster and better graphics out of it today i wil start on the top arches of the facade but first i have to get rid of some bugs
about the tower you are building wen you are starting on the south tower are you doing the escalator in the skylobby to you now the one that gows to the observationdeck on the roof it would be great to see that in 3d
and did you try out that facedade i posted here to build a paper model of it anyway great work keep on going man you are doing great

compare to the new tower it a big differnce of architecture at the end nobody wil ever see that two great twins ruled the skyline only two voids wil remember us atleast they could have used a bit of the old twin towers in the new one those arches would have looked awesome on top of the new one a bit of art deco is never wrong to use but wat can we do about it nothing at al we can only see it grow in to the skyline and hopefully we are able to go to the top of the new tower if ward is not scrapping the observatory to like he did with the restaurant

for my model i wil use texturing on al of the buildings the old models were crap i am building them for 5 years every time i build new one to get better in modeling now with the new towers im building its getting even more realistic now i wil try to get ass close to detailing as the ones you are building we wil see

I'm going off blueprints. Aside from some missing details, that's precisely what it looked like.

Ya, the roof edge looked exactly like that.

In fact you can see it (although still under construction) in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFD4Q7fodK8) from the 1973 movie Godspell.

At the end of the song (All For The Best) you see the actors dancing and singing on the roof of the North Tower, and as the camera pulls out at the finale you can see the roof's edge.

-EDIT-
Also there's this other video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUKKykqhI04), that looks to have been recorded at about the same time, that shows off the North Tower's roof much better then Godspell does.

Anyway, I really dig the overhangs on the plaza buildings. It's organic, yet geometric, giving a sense of order that's generally lacking in modern attempts at organic architecture.
