:goodnight: I'm not trying to be pessimistic or anything because I know the majority of people droOl over this antenna in the desert, however if its already at 300 meters somebody explain how the BD will be able to go up 800 meters. I think its stupid because the floor plates will be soo tiny and basically fit only able to fit a couple of desks... if their lucky maybe a lamp.

I think tops 700 meters... thoughts anyone...

Ok this is a bit off topic, but I was looking at the list of previous worlds tallest this thing has passed up, and there is a major error on one of the pages. The Milwaukee City Hall is listed as having begun in 1983, which is off by 100 years. Someone should fix that, just a simple typo, but I thought I'd point it out.

Easy. The wings haven't reached their top positions so it looks like it should be shorter to keep its proportion.

At the moment this is what it looks like:

Arcite this building is as moronic as you(DUDE), if you understand ecomonic needs you'll understand that building this antenna in the desert is basically to draw Western corporations to invest in UAE. Remember the real need for skyscrapers is for office space, not for you to praise because its a supertall penis extension (lo). I want to know who will actually lease/rent the top half of the this skinny building, it would be wise to make the upper half residential rather thn commercial.

Binary, you never responded to my earlier post pointing out the obvious flaw in your statment that tall buildings should be built only for office space. That would be true except for the fact that nearly every world's tallest built in the last one hundred years was built in times of terrible office demand. For example, ESB-the frigging middle of the great depression, demand for offices? I think not, it was pretty empty until WW2, WTC, horrible occupancy rates for the first decade after completion, Sears tower, again, nowhere near enough tenents to fill it up until many years later. Not to mention projects like the Sears Tower would be much cheeper and efficiant if they were built half as tall and on two lots. Chicago is just as flat if not flatter than Dubai, why didn't they just make two 55 story buildings instead of one 110 story, its not like the Sears Tower was boxed in by dense buidings when it was built and there was no other choice but to make it really tall.

I will agree with you that regular skyscrapers are built to meet demand, not necessarily office demand, but residential and simple market based demand. World's tallest buildings, however, are not regular skyscrappers. They are built not only with the idea of turning a profit in mind, but also the idea of creating a landmark to show how big the city/country's penis is. Landmark esteem is very important to a city's image, thats what Burj Dubai is about, putting Dubai on the map. Obviously the demand driving the construction of BD is a demand to attract attention and thus investment, there is nothing wrong with that, worlds tallests are all about ego and I don't hear you complaining about any of the others, so why pick on BD?

There's more than that. As I said before, this is part of a complex and is used to raise prestige for the 20,000 or so units around the tower. You could say the burj dubai is to the complex as the chrysler spire is to the chrysler building. Imagine the chrysler without its spire, it would be boring as hell. What purpose does its spire have? It raises the prestige of the whole building and makes it truly iconic.
It's the same thing here but on a larger scale.

Whoa, this discussion is way out of control!

For one, this building will be 162 floors. Full stop - what else in the world is this tall? Even if you cut it off there, you still have a giant. There is not a lot of stuff in the world over 100 floors, is there ANYTHING above 110 now (WTC, RIP)? This is just vastly taller.

If Disneyland wants to attract paying park visitors, they will not build something small and expected. Dubai is doing the same, they are building something new and different, something out of the ordinary. Anyway, being in the middle of a sandy, barren desert, I cannot blame them for wanting something like this. In San Francisco, there is amazing natural beauty, so buildings complement things, in Dubai, the beauty IS the skyscrapers, and this is their Golden Gate Bridge.

Sky Tower proved my point-

Like I said, I'm sorry for :lmao: making fun of your precious antenna.
:order: Now calm down and I'll leave you to your droOling.

How about we just stop this now. If you don't like this building fair enough, nobody said you have to and I definity won't try to change that. But now you have to respect our opinion about this building aswell.

My opinion: I couldn't give a shit what this thing symbolises, it's one damn great looking, soaring tower. If you want square footage why not build a 3000*3000*3000ft box. :)

Anyway, I don't know if this is exactly true but it seems to me supertall res towers are easier to build since you don't need to waste a lot of space on a million elevators. Also supertall res towers must be skinny since most rooms will need windows

Building the tallest skyscraper in the world is the best thing Dubai can do. The Burj Dubai will not make money. The whole complex will make money and the Burj Dubai, together with the other projects, will put Dubais name into the history books, forever.

Who really will care in 50 years how much money the Burj Dubai has cost?
Do you care how much it has cost to build the Forbidden City or the Pyramids of Gizeh?
No!!
Money is not the most important thing in the world.
I have seen advertising with Dubai all around the world. In Frankfurt, Krakow, Beijing, Seoul. Dubai builds the largest dream a city ever had.

btw, I finally understand why the building never seems to match the renderings... It's because they are building the 'square' portion fo the superstructure, and then they are coming in behind and building out the 'spade' shaped endcaps on each floor to finish out their building's final mass/shape.

I'm a smart guy, but damn sometimes I'm dumber than a rock!

:previous: vahhenrik, I am compiling the 71 minute version as a full screen, high quality version that's downloadable as .zip file upon my dedicated server.

It will open in mpg format but can easily be converted into divx or avi format using the latest version of Nero. (If you don't have a copy you can download the full working programme, with serial crack code from limewire)

The old way of viewing it, other than viewing the direct streaming (poor quality) on YouTube was to download it using a bit-torrent downloader which can take 5-6 hours to download the 771mb file.

As it's on a high speed server, those on a U.S T1 bandwidth could download the file in 2-3 minutes, with Western European Superbroadband around 7-8 seconds!

Will post the link when ready, as soon as tomorrow!

I heard the vacancy rate was much much less than that, especially considering the rapid population growth and the fact that not many office towers are complete

WonderlandPark
Oct 22, 2006, 7:03 PM
Yeah, I was just googling around and found this:

"As reported in Gulf News recently, industry experts say Dubai's commercial space vacancy rate has dropped to just one per cent - a critical supply shortage which has allowed landlords to hike their charges.

Jon Steiner, executive director of CitySpace, a company specialising in corporate workplace solutions, said a vacancy rate of 5-10 per cent is considered appropriate for a stable market, while a 10 per cent rate is viewed as an over-supply."

so in June, maybe some large thing opened and space opened up, or he could have meant the entire UAE. dunno, or could have been talking out of his ass :)

Exactly, those are great buildings, don't forget all the kickass buildings going up in Chicago, Trump, Waterview, possibly Fordham spire (I know it has a new name)!

The reason there are only 40 or 50 buildings being built in cities like NY or Chicago is that there are already a few thousand of them there, compared to the several dozen that are finishished in Dubai.
