For years, Dubai boasted that whatever bling project it embarked upon, from carving its coastline into palm-tree-shaped resorts to building vast ski domes in the sand, it would be the “number one in the world”. After the credit crunch, however, it looked like the only record the Gulf city state would claim is the biggest boom and bust.

Tomorrow, though, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al- Maktoum, the emirate’s ruler, will celebrate at least one global milestone he can be proud of when he opens the tallest building on the planet.

- However, after the economic downturn ripped through Dubai — sending property prices plunging 50% and forcing Sheikh Mohammed to go cap in hand to his wealthy neighbour, Abu Dhabi, for a $25 billion (£15 billion) bailout — critics are already dismissing the tower as a gaudy memorial to a lost decade of uncontrolled speculation. “It’s the last blast of the Noughties in a city that got too big for its dishdasha [robes],” said one local banker.

‘Burj Dubai’ painted and protected by Jotun Paints and Coatings

Company uses 122,000 kilograms of powder coating and 487,000 litres of paint on the world’s tallest tower

January 04, 2010

Jotun, one of the world’s leading producers and suppliers of paints and coatings, announced that it has painted the ‘Burj Dubai’, a mix-used development by Emaar Properties. A total of 122,000 kilograms of powder coatings and 487,000 litres of paint have been used to decorate and protect the world’s tallest tower, which will be inaugurated today ( January 04, 2010). The ‘Burj Dubai’ is the latest project to benefit from Jotun’s revolutionary ‘Single Source Solution’ concept.

The ‘Burj Dubai’ project required the use of a metallic matt powder coated finish to complement the aluminium for the 28,261 cladding panels that make up the exterior of the tower and its two annexes. To address this unique requirement, Jotun Powder Coatings developed a specially formulated ‘Corro-Coat PE-F Façade Iris and Oyster Bond‘, a bonded metallic product for this project. On the other hand, coating the 2,684 feet spire of the renowned tower is ‘Baltoflake’, a glass flake reinforced polyester coating that provides outstanding resistance to abrasion, water and most chemicals. The product was recommended by Jotun and chosen by the client for its 20-year life span and minimal need for maintenance.

“Building the world’s tallest tower is a tremendous feat that requires the highest quality materials and the expertise of construction innovators, and to be among the companies to be part of the team to deliver ‘Burj Dubai’ is a true honour for Jotun. This project has been a perfect opportunity for us to highlight our best-of-breed paint products and solutions,” said Trine Finnevolden, General Manager, Jotun Paints UAE. “In addition to our existing industry-leading products, we have also developed specially-formulated coatings for this outstanding project. This level of commitment, in addition to the proven effectiveness of our pioneering ‘Single Source Solution’ concept has driven the excellent results we have achieved for the paint and coating works of ‘Burj Dubai’.”

Identified as the most suitable product for a project of this nature, Jotun’s industry-leading ‘Jotashield’ brand has been used for the tower’s 120,000 sq metre basement car park because of its excellent adhesion and moisture resistance features, which protects concrete against ingression of salts and carbon dioxide. In addition, 26 custom colour shades from Jotun’s ‘Fenomastic’ range of emulsion and enamel paint was used in all interiors of the ‘Burj Dubai’, which covers a total area of 700,000 sq. metres. The lead-free and non-yellowing enamel paint also gives a tough yet smooth finish that lasts long and washes easily.

“Our involvement with the ‘Burj Dubai’ project has allowed us to highlight our capacity to deliver innovative products for specific projects with unique demands for coating and paint solutions. The completion of the paint and coating works on this acclaimed monumental project marks an exceptional milestone and achievement for Jotun, and stands as a testament to our commitment to the regional market. We are confident that our paint and coating solutions will prove more than satisfactory in protecting the world’s tallest tower against the ravages of climate and pollution for many years to come,” concluded Ram Ramnath, General Manager, Jotun Powder Coatings UAE.

Through its unique concept of ‘Single Source Solution’, Jotun provides a holistic approach to high quality and cost-effective, paints and coatings solutions for all substrates. The pioneering concept underlines Jotun’s ability to meet the global requirements of the consultants and engineers in the construction industry at all levels through new technologies, customized solutions, and extensive technical expertise and support. ‘Single Source Solution’ has benefited some of the world’s most prestigious and complex structures including the Eiffel Tower, Petronas towers in Malaysia, Nile City Complex and Burj Al Arab in Dubai.

It looks very similar in reality to how it looked in the renderings! It was on the news in Sweden yesterday, followed by news about the financial crisis in Dubai. I also heard that many of the world's tallest buildilngs were completed in the middle of a financial crisis, just like Burj Dubai.

Kamin's write-up from the Chicago Tribune:

The Chicago Tribune
Cityscapes by Blair Kamin

The Burj Dubai: Thumbs Up For World's New Tallest Bulding
3 January 2010

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - If ever a skyscraper was burdened with great expectations, it is the Burj Dubai, the colossal, half-mile-high tower designed by Chicago architects that opens here on Monday. This high-rise isn't simply meant to shatter height records. It is supposed to be a national icon, a symbol for a madly exuberant, now debt-ridden, city-state that mixes the manufactured spectacle of Las Vegas with the helter-skelter growth of Houston.

In the wrong hands, the 160-story, mixed-use skyscraper - the world's tallest building and the world's tallest free-standing structure, whose height is roughly double that of Donald Trump's Chicago tower - could have been a monstrosity, an extra-extra-large version of the architectural cartoons that blight the skyline here. Yet, as designed by the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and its former design partner, Adrian Smith, the Burj Dubai represents a great leap forward in height and, especially for Dubai, in design quality.....

Definitely doesn’t boast well for the recognition and reputation of Dubai, as if it already isn't in the hole enough. It just comes off as a very ‘weak’ move in my mind, but on the flipside it was Abu Dhabi who bailed them out. The name change itself did alter some rolling eyes from the commentators.

Seems odd to change the name to what they did, but I'm reading that Khalifa essentially bailed out the city of Dubai during the recent economic troubles and saved the project from further problems or collapse. But... that seems a little odd of an explanation. I think it may be enough that he's the President of the country as a whole. It's not like Dubai is a country in and of itself... Also, it seems that yes, the whole area has been renamed for him.

Low minimum wage in Dubai and poor human rights and safety regulations make labor cheap. I don't know the % of costs that go in to labor in American projects but I've read about the wage situations in Dubai and know they're much lower for the workers, and that has to be a big chunk of the cost savings.

In other news, I think the renaming to Burj Khalifa really brings out the non-Western element of this tower. If there was any doubt that UAE is an oil-rich monarchy, not a market Democracy, here you go. Perhaps in another era the U.S. would have named spectacular projects after presidents (like the Hoover Dam, JFK Airport) but not private sector projects, and would not name them after people who are still alive/in office.

Imagine if they had re-named 1WTC "the George Bush Tower," what an uproar there would be!

I say this with no condescension as it is just the ways of another culture, but I think that the re-naming puts a palpable damper on enthusiasm about this tower in the West.

Say "Burj Dubai beats the Sears Tower by almost twice in height." to any passerby, and there's at least a 50% chance they'll have a vague idea of what you're talking about, or that one of the names will ring a bell. Now try saying "Burj Khalifah beats Willis Tower by almost twice in height", and see how far that will get you.

How safe is the building. Have there been any deaths during construction? Any accidents?

I believe there were two deaths during construction. I am not sure about injuries.

The Wall Street Journal reports that this tower cost $4.1 billion. Which is almost four times as much as the cost I saw quoted in this thread a few pages ago.

Which is the correct figure? Or is this a complicated number to come up with?

Here is a link to the WSJ article.

Although I really think the Sheik of Abu Dhabi deserves some kind of thank you from Dubai, renaming this tower was stupid and selfish imo.

I mean, yeah Dubai got a bailout from them but some on, having the tallest building in the world named after you? At least Rockefeller was a business man who needed the space, but this tower wasn't even the vision of Khalifah.

Amazing display by the way. Why can't we have cool fireworks shows here?!?!

I don't like the name change either. At least as the Burj Dubai, it sounding like something that could be the world's tallest building. I know Donald Trump gets his name put on a lot of developments, but half the people on this forum alone probably won't know what or where the Burj Khalifah is.

Height reveal...

Name change...

RIP Burj Dubai

The world's tallest tower, 'Burj Khalifa' is 828 metres (2,716.5 ft) high

http://i49.tinypic.com/ye1xj.jpg

Dubai, UAE; January 4, 2010: The world's tallest tower, developed by Emaar Properties, was unveiled tonight to a crowd of thousands and the world in a crescendo of fireworks, lasers and fountain displays.

The official height of the tower, unveiled as 'Burj Khalifa', was announced as 828 metres (2,716.5 ft).

A closely guarded secret, the official height of Burj Khalifa was flashed onto a giant screen before an estimated crowd of more than 400,000, as lasers and fireworks lit up the night sky.

Fireworks cascaded from the tower's spire to the base and lasers blazed out from all levels leaving the crowds awestruck.

The height was disclosed in arithmetic progression, with the numbers being flashed onto the screen, one after another. The tower's height breaks all existing world records for tall buildings.

Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world according to the three main criteria of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The CTBUH ranks the world’s tallest buildings based on ‘Height to Architectural Top,’ ‘Height to Highest Occupied Floor’ and ‘Height to Tip.’

At 828 metres (2,716.5ft), Burj Khalifa is 320 metres taller than Taipei 101, which at 508 metres (1,667 ft) had held the record for the world’s tallest building measured to the architectural top since 2004, the year the project was announced.

Burj Khalifa achieved the distinction of being the world's tallest structure – surpassing the KVLY-TV mast (628.8 metres; 2,063 ft) in North Dakota, USA – 1,325 days after excavation work started in January 2004.

The tower also beats the 31-year-old record of CN Tower, which at 553.33 metres (1,815.5 ft) had been the world’s tallest free-standing structure on land since 1976.

Burj Khalifa employs a record-breaking 330,000 cubic metres of concrete, 39,000 metric tonnes of steel rebar and 142,000 square metres of glass; and it took 22 million man hours to build.

Other world records for Burj Khalifa include the highest occupied floor in the world, at over 550 metres (1,800 ft); the highest outdoor observation deck in the world – At the Top on Level 124; and the tallest service elevator, which travels to a height of 504 metres (1,654 ft).

Mr. Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman, Emaar Properties, said that with the unveiling of the final height of Burj Khalifa, the world now had a new reference point for high-rise developments.

“Burj Khalifa is an example of collaboration on a global scale, and the tremendous positive energy that can be generated when people from all over the world come together to work towards a common goal. Thousands of professionals and skilled workers from around the world worked on this once-in-a-lifetime project.”

“More than 60 of the world’s leading consultants including South Korea’s Samsung Corporation and New York-based Turner Construction International realised the design for Burj Khalifa of Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM),” he said.

Burj Khalifa employed the latest advances in wind engineering, structural engineering, structural systems, construction materials and methods. All design considerations took into account the 12,000 people who will live and work in the tower. The handover to residents of the various components of Burj Khalifa will begin in February.

With a total built-up area of about 6 million sq ft, Burj Khalifa features nearly 2 million sq ft of residential space and over 300,000 sq ft of prime office space, in addition to the area occupied by the keenly awaited Armani Hotel Dubai and the Armani Residences. The tower also features modern lifestyle amenities including clubs, health and fitness facilities, gourmet restaurants and the 124th floor observation deck, 'At the Top.'

Burj Khalifa is the focal point of the 500-acre ‘mega-project’ by Emaar Properties, described as the new heart of Dubai.
