You may not noticed but SSP goes down very often as well.

SSC is full of S**t & slow, and full of trolls, I no longer bother going there, well In past 10 months I posted only 14-16 posts on that forum, tells you how much I care about it.

I prefer this forums here, much better place to talk projects, and no lies and trolls to worry about imho.

Aren't you banned on SSC anyway?

Aren't you banned on SSC anyway?

Nope, but this does make a difference to my statements, I posted so little in past year on SSC that I care little about SSC forums.

Too many trolls, nationalist and spammers not forgetting fake projects.

Some of these trolls come here and post rubbish they get banned, on ssc you can write all kinds of s**t and bc of few mod you can get away with it all sorts, I'd remove these mods and this might improve SSC.

And if you read my previous posts on this thread and previous you'd realize I wasn't happy about things on SSC even than.

When Shiro got demoted I was furious bc he was only decent mod there, along with the Mantz.

Probably because the site changed its IP address and you still have the old one.

If anyone still can't get in, here's my quick and easy guide complete with pictures:

1: Find the drive that has your system files in it (my case F but most of the time it's C)

http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/2272/untitled1um8.th.jpg (http://img170.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled1um8.jpg)

2: Go to "windows"

http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/2157/untitled2vw3.th.jpg (http://img226.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled2vw3.jpg)

3: Then to "System32"

http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/2309/untitled3mn1.th.jpg (http://img226.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled3mn1.jpg)

4: Then click on "drivers"

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/7660/untitled4vc8.th.jpg (http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled4vc8.jpg)

5: Then "etc"

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/2164/untitled5rx0.th.jpg (http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled5rx0.jpg)

6: Then doubleclick on "hosts". (I had 2 of them, I actually changed them both but if you don't want to change 1 and if it works fine, if it doesn't then do the other)

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/9195/untitled6df4.th.jpg (http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled6df4.jpg)

7: Open it with "notepad"

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/7643/untitled7mv5.th.jpg (http://img221.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled7mv5.jpg)

8: The text file should open. Type in "66.249.139.178 www.skyscrapercity.com" where I've pointed. Make sure that the 2 words are on the same line and have at least one space between them.

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/3920/untitled8pz2.th.jpg (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled8pz2.jpg)

9: It should look something like this:

http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/2443/untitled9hk5.th.jpg (http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled9hk5.jpg)

10: Now just type in www.skyscrapercity.com into your browser as usual

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/2167/untitled10ud2.th.jpg (http://img243.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled10ud2.jpg)

11: And Voila!!! :D

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/6098/untitled11le7.th.jpg (http://img81.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled11le7.jpg)

Of course, if that's the problem, you won't know until the site is back up anyway.

Maybe Jan should 'fix' DaiTengu (sorry, nothing personal, I know you're a hobbyist) and hire a professional database operator. Yeah, SSC used to be good. There were a lot of posts almost everyday and there were actually some good topics. Trolls came and went. Mods would ban them, but they would re-register again and again.

I stopped going there until just recently. I have posted a few posts this past week, but nothing significant. I mostly go to Houston's forum, my Atlanta forum, and SSP. SSP really has good development threads.

GRRRRRR - okay here's what I don't get.... why in the name of yellow don't they just get a pro server solution with gurentees and pro 24h support...?

I do realise that there's economics involed - but the frustration that comes from the way SSC is run must be worse than a single monthly figue... and wasn't the add support added to awoid stuff like this?

Personly I would be willing to pay for SSC ( if a few features were added and the rules altered a bit and kept in a fair and friendly matter )

If Jan really wants to keep it running and free he might want to look at all the national sub forums and skip a few... it's not that I don't like subforums... but if there really are so large problems cutting down on the non-English ones and maybe collecting a few nations into single ones like in the S&B section might help out...

I see no reason why some single nations have 10+ subforums and other crap that's rarely used while others have 7 nations sharing 2 subforums and a Skybar... ( I prefere the later btw - but S&B needs a personal city picture subforum though - are you listning Swede :D )

SSP is slow at times too, but far from a broken as SSC so Kudos to the boss man :)

Feb 13, 2007, 4:12 PM
SSP is much faster because it has barely any users. Look at the most important subsection "Europe", it has 4,007 posts. Euroscrapers at SSC have 844,273 posts, that's not counting other European forums, such as French, Polish, Spanish, Irish and Dutch. That's about three million posts vs four thousand here :)

The comparison of number of threads can't be made, because threads here are deleted after they're not posted in for 3 months, whilst at SSC the threads remain for at least 18 months if they're not posted in.

So it's probably more like 4000 vs 500,000 in all European forums over there.

The thing that would mostly likely bring traffic is already existing traffic, so it's kinda like a catch 22.

We've had country sub-forums here in the past, and in Asia and the middle east but adding them there never brought any traffic to themselves.

The only area that seems to bring any traffic is the continent of the Americas, so this must be a new world forum or something.

Grumpy

Way to many threads about things which have nothing to do with architecture and to many subforums are not good for a forum.

DaiTengu
Feb 14, 2007, 2:49 PM
Ok, let me get some misconceptions out of the way here.

The size of the database, how many threads are on the forum, and how many subforums there are has absolutely NO impact on the problems we just experienced.

What did have an impact was the 4000+ users online at the same time.

We tried to add another server, and it overloaded the power circuits (I have all kinds of unkind things to say about the datacenter, but I'll keep them to myself right now). They added a new circuit, and I just finished getting the 4th webserver online about 15 minutes ago. The site is running very snappy with 3500 users online, and the loads on the servers are quite acceptable. This should suffice until we hit around 6000 users online, at which point we'll need to think about more hardware. Hopefully we have 6 months before that happens.

Now, I see plenty of armchair server admins in this forum, and not a single one of them has any clue as to how the cluster is set up, and what kind of incompetent fools I have to work with at the datacenter. I'd move the site, but that would give us probably close to 3-5 days of downtime while the servers are packed up and shipped elsewhere.

Now, for those who are whining about what's being done, grow your own forum and see if you can handle it.
