View Full Version : Master Skyscraper Construction List

Don B.
06-23-2006, 07:21 PM
I am preparing a master list of the high-rise activity in cities (entire metro areas) around the world. My focus will mostly be on U.S. cities but others can work on other cities elsewhere. All cities are welcome. This is a collaborative project.

I will add to this list as more data comes in, or I have time to hunt through your city's compilation list. The problem with my counting is I'm not in the know and have to depend on your work product. I'd rather have local people do this because I'll likely screw it up.

I can do Phoenix because of course I live here, and I did some others based on their compilation threads (but I may have missed some stuff):

CITY............U/C......APP......PROP......UNK......CANC......BUILT
_____________________________________________________________________

Miami..........121......148.......86..........0......11.........55
Toronto........102......150**....200**.......20.......5........232

Vancouver.......76.......48.......32..........0.......0...........
Chicago*........56........0......113..........0.......0........110 (note 2)
Las Vegas.......43.......42.......85.........14......41.........36
Tampa-St. P.....28.......51.......19..........3......13.........26
Calgary.........25.......29.......34.........11.......3.........18

Portland........18........3.......14..........3.......3.........18

Baton Rouge......4........1........7..........0.......0..........6
Long Beach.......2........1.......10..........1.......2..........4 (note 1)
Cleveland........2........0........5..........0.......0..........0

_____________________________________________________________________

* Only includes structures over 11 stories tall
** Estimated
Note 1: Long Beach will be consolidated with Los Angeles once additional
data is available.
Note 2: Chicago's proposed number includes skyscrapers approved and
unknown.

If you don't see your city listed above, feel free to sum up all of your highrise projects. Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Every building on the list needs to be at least 10 stories or 100 feet tall. If it is ten stories, it's in. If it has less than ten stories, it's not in unless it is over 100 feet tall.

2. Buildings can be in ONE of the following categories:

A. Under construction, defined as either active site prep for construction or post groundbreaking ceremony. This is the most important category, and the final master list will be ordered based on the total count in this category only.

B. Approved, defined as a real project that has been approved but has not entered the construction phase.

C. Proposed. These are buildings that are still pending approval by the appropriate governmental agency, or have not been submitted yet at all. Normally an article in real media source or developer news release/website with renderings is necessary to show this is a real proposal.

D. Unknown. This is your catch-all category, like miscellaneous, don't know, not sure, delayed, etc. Rumored could also go in here. When in doubt, put it here.

E. Cancelled. This is for projects that are really dead. If there is a glimmer of hope it may still happen, put it in unknown above.

F. Built. This is for all projects completed since Jan. 1, 2000. If it opened in 1999 or before, it does not belong here.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Don B.

^ We want the entire metro area, not just a small downtown core. I will add San Diego when we have better numbers for the entire city.

Updates:

1. Revised Atlanta's built count to reflect metro area numbers.
2. Revised Phoenix's built count to reflect metro area numbers.
3. Revised Victoria's numbers.

this is a nice idea don, but you've got the numbers for chicago messed up a bit.

on my boom rundown thread, i only track 5 categories for buildings: "recently completed", "under construction", "on hold", "site prep/demo", and "proposed". according to your own definitions, the site prep/demo buildings on the chicago list should be included in the under construction category for your list. as for the "approved" category on your list, there is no corollary on the chicago rundown list as all proposals, be they apporved or otherwise, are lumped together in the "proposed" category.

chicago should appear as follows on your list:

CITY............U/C......APP......PROP......UNK......CANC......BUILT
_____________________________________________________________________

Chicago*........51.......N/A......104.........0.......0.........101
_____________________________________________________________________

* Only includes structures over 11 stories tall

of course, chicago has dozens of projects that are approved, but i don't track that distinction as there are so many levels of approval in chicago that it can be hard to know when a lot of the smaller projects are actually given total and final approval.

hope that helps

For Calgary I am going to refer to a list I have recently made and have posted on the first page of the Calgary Construction Thread (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=105776)

Calgary:

U/C -25
Approved - 29
Proposed - 34
Unknown - 11
Cancelled - 3
Built - 18

For the Unknown category, I have only gone with ones that I think are likely to meet or exceed 10 stories, even though there are several others who's heights we don't know. For the Cancelled categories I am going with SSP's list with a few modifications.

EDIT: Built Number added, but I don't think I was being very thorough, and have undercounted the number of buildings. I'll do further searching sometime later.

DOUBLE EDIT: Okay, I can only think of 3 Cancelled projects since 2000 right off the top of my head, so we could leave it at that for now...

actually don, i just reread your intitial post and realized that you want metro area figures for these cities. in that case, the chicago numbers need to be revised again, because the main chicago rundown list is exclusively city proper. fortunately though, there are some sub-lists after the main list, 1 for evanston, IL and another for the rest of chicagoland. if we include these metro projects, chicago's entry in the list should read as follows:

CITY............U/C......APP......PROP......UNK......CANC......BUILT
_____________________________________________________________________

Chicago*........56.......N/A......113.........0.......0.........110
_____________________________________________________________________

* Only includes structures over 11 stories tall

1. Added Calgary and Toronto's numbers.

2. Revised Chicago's numbers.

3. Revised built total for Philly.

I can't add Long Beach because that will be part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, and I need the rest of LA's area numbers to make that meaningful.

^^ don, you're still listing "8" for chicago under approved when it should in fact say "N/A" for "not applicable". there are dozens of approved projects for chicago, but as i explained earlier, in the chicago compilation thread i roll all of the proposed and approved projects into 1 single "proposed" category. i do not distinguish between projects that are approved and those that are merely just proposed. until a project begins site preparation, they're all just "proposed" in the eyes of the chicago compilation thread.

Vancouver metro (can)

76 u/c
48 aproved
32 proposed

Most of this info came of Emporis so the actual numbers are considerably higher. I only used actual stats(acording to the cities) of Burnaby and New Westminster which were 18u/c 10aproved and 10u/c 6aproved and 10proposed. On Emporis they had Burnaby as 11u/c 2 aproved and New Westminster as 1u/c 3 aproved and 3 proposed. This gives you a ruff idea of how much the actual number are higher. I will try to update my numbers for all the other cities within the metro when i find the time.

Since those numbers are just for the tiny city of Miami, here are some other cities in the Metro:

Miami Beach: UC- 12 Appr- 8 Prop- 5
Sunny Isles Beach: UC- 9 Appr- 7 Prop- 1
North Bay Village: UC- 5 Appr- 5 Prop- 6
Aventura: UC- 9 Appr- 3 Prop- 1
Coral Gables: UC- 4 Appr- 7 Prop- 4

Fort Lauderdale: uc- 8 Appr- 17 Prop- 11
Hallandale Beach: UC- 6 Appr- 2 Prop- 1
West Palm Beach: UC- 6 Appr- 14 Prop- 5

Also by my count there are 110 buildings over 10 stories currently UC in Miami-Dade County (1/3 of the metro), dozens more either just finished construction or are just beginning.

230x? You're comparing one municipality to 80 municipalities that make up greater LA.

The City of LA is about 4,000,000 and City of Victoria 80,000. That's only 50x.

Hello,
My name is Snyder and I am from Tulsa, OK. This is my first post! I am not sure how many propsed or planned skyscrapers Tulsa has right now. I do know one is under construction currently. There was also just a proposal for about 6, 20-30 skyscrapers to be built on man-made islands on the Arkansas River just on the southwest border of downtown. I will try to compile a list for Tulsa and Oklahoma City and get it posted here.

There is currently a "casino sweepstakes" going on in Pittsburgh between 3 competiting groups looking to land the new casino license for the city. 2 groups have proposed $1 billion dollar casino/development plans while the 3rd plan is about half that. The two larger plans incorporate high-rise proposals in the renderings. One plan for Station Square features 1250 residential units in multiple towers, supposedly up to 25 stories. The developer here may go through with the residential component even if the casino license goes to a competitor. The other large group has a mixed-use development plan for the Lower Hill District that looks to include a number of mid-rise buildings in the 10-20 story range. Details for these projects remain ambiguous.

Canc (1):
Pittsburgh Fireside Inn (29 fl, ? ft)

well Don B. has been MIA from this forum for several months now. He was probably most instrumental in keeping this thread active.
