A city so nice, they named it twice.

Anyway, this is what I've got so far of my city, this is the neighbourhood on what will be the border of downtown, seperating the warehouse/loft district and rowhouse district. I've used textures from my own photos (except maybe two or three) of Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Milwaukee, and San Francisco, though I tried deliberately to veer away from too famous buildings to make sure that it doesn't become unvaried and unoriginal.

I'm putting in the roads last.

Are you going to make a downtown full of supertalls and modern skyscrapers? :)

Great job so far! :)

CGII
Jul 25, 2006, 7:58 PM
Yes-Most of what I've been working on thus far are the neighbourhoods immeaditely outside of downtown. The core of downtown will be on the other side of ther river. A lot has changed since my last post...

Central Green, the city's oldest surviving park.
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/984/1ou2.jpg
City Hall is the tower on the left. It was completed in 1929 shortly before the Great Depression, which rendered plans for leaseable office space obsolete as the building sat empty for nearly 30 years. It was built on top of the original City City City Hall, which was constructed in 1898. Shortly into the Financial Crisis of 1999, a public works project created a new green roof on top of the old City Hall, providing a few hundred unemployed with jobs and a green aspect to an otherwise inefficent building.
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/4007/2su1.jpg
Mason St., a touristy shopping district.
http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/1130/3wa1.jpg
Just off Mason St. (seen behind the small green building) is the transition to the historic Rowhouse District. In the Rowhouse district are countless small, intimate plazas, like the one seen at right. In the distance, the CityBeacon stands as the tallest in the city since its completion in 1949.

A basic overhead shot. Downtown will be near the top of this photo, the rowhouse and entertainment districts to the lower right, the convention centre at the bottom and the warehouse district to the lower left.
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/7146/8xi6.jpg
http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/632/9so5.jpg
The windowless, concrete building is the City City Central Mechanical Output Complex. It houses vents and fans for the sewer and subway systems, as well as gov't computer control boards and phone boards. It rests upon two smaller buildings, built as part of the project, and the tower spans a street. The two smaller office buildings below compromise the brutality of the structure by offering public green roofs adjacent to the controls tower.

To the right one can see one of the smaller buildings:

Thanks all! Last night I dedicated a few hours to making tons of rowhouse textures and building the rowhouse district:the result is one long block of the Rowhouse District, adjacent to the Museum of Modern Art and Museum Centre Condominiums. I also redid the facade of of a skyscraper on the river. I'll get more pictures of the Rowhouse District once the other three blocks are finished.

Not for sure, I'd have to convert the model into a completely different type of file, and then do a lot of programming work, but I know that making new cities can be done. There's a map for Midtown Madness availible called 'Archipelago' and there's an island city map availible for Midtown Madness 2 (but I forget the name). I doubt that skp models can be converted, etc., but it's an option definitely worth exploring. Staunton would be mindblowing as an MM locale.

By the way, I was really big on Midtown Madness when they were still popular and on PC, and there were tons of fan sites devoted to plugins where you could download cars and locations and such. I know a few of them have shut down due to declined interest, but I do explicitly remember MM2Central, and I'll have to check if they're still up and still have the building programs. I remember the free ZModeller 3d program was popular for making plugins.

Go into Camera>Perspective and it turns off perspective. Then go to Camera>Standard>Iso and you get an isonometric shot. Turning off perspective gives great, diagram like skyline shots. ;)

I discovered Midtown Madness 2 Central is still up, along with downloadable extra locations availible in the 'downloads' page:

Better hurry up. I fear the death of this site is near.

I did a little research, and it can be done, with a lot of extra work put into the model, given that SketchUp can export in .3ds format.

I finished the Rowhouse District (for now) and will now move Northward onto downtown.

On the right is the latest tower, SoHo Crossing, which I was inspired to build by all the very thin residential glass towers rising in NYC where only two or three brownstones used to be.

In a desperate attempt to get an update out, I hastily through together some images and tossed them onto a floppy.

I have also decided that City City will be placed on the tip of the Westernmost peninsula of Michigan, on the coast of Lake Michigan. I have yet to make a map, but I will...

Downtown City City

The city's oldest skyscraper, the General Mortgage Consolidation Building (second from right), was built originally in 1880, not quite at 'skyscraper' status, though the tallest in the city. When competitor Ditech built building taller by one floor with a steel cage (qualifying as a skyscraper), General Mortgage decided to add three floors on top of the original building, just to say that this was one thing they didn't lose to Ditech. The Ditech building was demolished in 1979 to make way for the CCCP, or City City Central Phone, which was finished in 1984. The CCCP is visible in back, as the tall pink and stainless steel, postmodern tower.
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/2315/1dg4.jpg
The City City Port Authority Building, designed to serve as a self contained, miniature city, with residences, offices, and retail. In the basement of the tower was built an extension of 1868's Central Terminal (not yet modelled) across the river. It was commenced in 1927, but after the Great Depression, only the large base of the tower could be built. The tower portion was finished in 1943, following profits made from WWII by the Michigan Steel Corporation, which funded a large portion of the project.
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/7333/2pv1.jpg
The Port Authority was very briefly the tallest in City City, until the completion of CityBeacon in 1945. However, more recently, experts and city officials are arguing whether it is true that City Beacon is indeed taller, while topographic research and blueprints tend to suggest the Port Authority is taller, while the developers of CityBeacon have always claimed that their tower was a full 6 feet taller than the Port Authority. The developers also shrugged off the notion that the location of their tower led to the sucess of the developement, while Port Authority remained vastly empty for the first half of the century, but have always said the sucess of CityBeacon relied on its height.
http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/6125/3tv4.jpg
Some modern and post modern towers in downtown. There is still a lot of infill to be modelled.
http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/7261/4zg3.jpg
The West end of downtown. Staunton, New Jersey based Galviston Steel bought the highly sucessful Michigan Steel Corporation in 2000 in a last ditch attempt to avoid folding. The move suceeded, and in 2002 the firm announced the creation of a new headquarters for Midwestern distribution to be built, and the desired floor space called for a new tallest building in City City since 1945. Basic, preliminary designs and renderings were released, but the final design remains under wraps. The construction site, currently a hole, is visible to the left. Currently, digging crews, who reached bedrock last month, are being replaced with drilling crews and steel workers.
http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/1338/5gs9.jpg
Another view of the Southern edge of downtown. The large, brown brick building right of centre is the Jeweler's Building, finished in 1918 and the city's largest for four years, until the completion of the Carson Pririe Scott Building only three blocks away.

I used a 'fog machine' to do those two pics (with minor PS editting) from a simplified concept my cousin (who formerly worked at Pixar) told me. Basically, it's a cube of three sets of parallel, repeated planes:essentially like gridding a cube and connecting the lines with planes, then making those planes about 10% opaque grey. Thus, things further away are more shaded than those up close.
These two images were done with only one horizontal set, in which only things in distance in one direction are fogged, whereas a complete fog machine (with three sets) would fog in every direction. They're a bitch to render though, the second pic took about 45 minutes to render with the fog machine. Don't expect anything like that again.
Anyway, I'll be uploading a fog machine to the warehouse, soon. :)

Here's a petite update, the view from the roof of SoHo Crossing Condominiums. You can see the Financial District to the left of City Beacon and the Wedding District (what I'm working on now) to the right. As you can all probably tell, there's still a lot to be modelled along the river, and, as you can probably tell by now, I don't like to do thorough updates until I finish whole neighbourhoods. Your textures are awesome.

Two questions. How do you get the textures to line up so perfectly? I have the problem that when I apply a texture, it lines up where ever it wants. This forces me to sometimes change the exact location of the building so that the walls line up with the texture, as opposed to being able to line the texture up with the walls. Does that make sense?

Second: Why the Wedding District? I like the name, but it kind of perplexes me. Older buildings maybe? With setbacks reminiscent of a wedding cake?

Two questions. How do you get the textures to line up so perfectly? I have the problem that when I apply a texture, it lines up where ever it wants. This forces me to sometimes change the exact location of the building so that the walls line up with the texture, as opposed to being able to line the texture up with the walls. Does that make sense?
For one, I don't typically use 'textures,' per say, when I import the JPGs I deselect 'use as texture,' and rather than becoming a texture when applied to a surface, they remain a seperate element and stay within their borders, allowing one to adjust the size of the building to fit directly to the edges of the 'texture.'

Second: Why the Wedding District? I like the name, but it kind of perplexes me. Older buildings maybe? With setbacks reminiscent of a wedding cake?
Named for the 'wedding cake' residential buildings within. ;)

Here's a little peak, just to let you all know I haven't forgotten. In a few hours I'll make a post updating the infill of the Wedding District, the Banking Quarter and Burns Park expansions.

That's a comfy looking park there.

As always, I'm amazed at your use of photo-realistic textures. Many of your buildings are SO richly detailed. I want to walk along the river and gaze at all the architecture!

Agreed, I don't know where you get all the images of those buildings, but they are amazing. Your park feels sort of Chicago-ish to me, which I love. I like how you sunk it lower than the road too.

Thanks all!

All the textures I use are modified from photographs of my own, so after a visit to a majour city a new neighbourhood will start to resemble that city and the textures taken from it (the Banking Quarter, which I still have to update you all on, is based off Madison, the Financial District on the Loop of Chicago, the Wedding District on uptown Manhattan, Burns Park on Milwaukee's lakefront, et al.).

Hopefully I'll get some more up tonight. :) (Once again, I only like to make neighbourhood updates when all the little vacant lots are filled)

Brief update:I'm in the process of finishing the Banking Quarter and opening up huge new swaths of land to the South and a new industrial area to the East. This update isn't Photoshopped, I was too excited to get this much needed update out. In the meantime:

Riverside Plaza:A recently redesigned City City local favourite, located right off the Riverwalk, it features a small open, green plaza for outdoor dining or people watching. The buildings behind have been converted throughout to retail use. The parking lot to the left is considered the city's biggest eyesore and highest potential undeveloped lot.

Nice! I like City City's New England Feel, (even though its in Boston) City City reminds me a lot of Boston. Cool! The Galprises Tower is finally above ground, how tall will it be?

CGII

It'll be the new tallest, so somewhere in the range of 800-1000', as the design progresses.

Heh, yes, I have, very quietly on the rowhouse district's expansion. I've also got preliminary buildings for University and Convention Center neighbourhoods, not to mention industrial infill.

City City is amazing! It's as though you took the best of pre-war Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston and combined them into one amazing city!

I think what I like about City City is that is realistically imitates what many northeastern American cities would be had it not been for some of the destructive degress of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Kudos, man.
