wanted to buy a condo in miami, but bought one in dubai marina instead. It was a no brainer. These condos sell like hot cakes. The only real joke is americas economy, if I inveted in miami, my condo would be worthless now. By the way looks like the up coming 1400 meter Al Burj next to dubai marina will have Trumps involvement, not bad.

Massive tower coming soon by Tameer (same developers as princess tower and elite residence) coming soon. It won't technically be part of the marina but will be very close. The design should be good unlike princess towers, etc since they're having a design competition.
It'll be located where the hard rock cafe is. The cafe itsself will stay I think but there's a lowrise hotel next to it that's going to be demolished. The location is on the right of this picture where that small ESB like structure is.

Only if more people in Dubai thought like you, borgo100. It is such a shame that Dubai has so much potential to implement what you listed above, but they do not. I only hope that Dubai will become such a city as it implements the Dubai Metro, new tram lines, and expands its bus network. But, they still continue to make terrible mistakes without thinking of the consequences.

Marina101&106 are not cheap crap designs. Many cities would be proud to have them as their pinnacle.
malec
Jul 22, 2008, 8:41 AM
^^ They're not bad, well, marina 101's top is a ripoff of another tower but the proportions look pretty good. For towers like princess tower and any others in that style if the cladding is good then even if the shape of the building is not good it'll still look fine. Example is the marina crown lowrise (well, actually 200m :))
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/408/imresolt158sj4.jpg
The thing is construction though, costs have gone way up which means the ones with a simple box shape will get built since they're the cheapest to build. This means towers like the torch, princess tower, marina 106, etc. Also the cladding will have to be crap which is disastrous for this style of tower.
Ultramodern ones like the pentominium can get away with cheap cladding more easily but they're expensive to build because of their structure.

The pentominium looks very tall in this picture. It reminds me of certain views of Sears tower when I was in Chicago. Why is it that the cores are built at almost the same height as the floors. Is it cheaper than building the core 5+ stories above the floor they're currently working on?

Admittedly my experience is rather old (haven't worked on core walls in high rise construction since mid70's) but I'd think it's all to do with scheduling. Accessing the system constructing the cores is difficult & the larger the differential, the degree of difficulty providing access & services increases significantly. We'd normally be 3-5 levels above the current floor being prepared except when core wall pattern changed. We'd accelerate to being 7-8 levels above to give us time to change configuration without hindering those forming up the floor.

I don't know if you can see but the core and the main walls are poured in one go. The same technique is used for 23 marina and the al attar tower.

By night it looks like an oil rig or something. I never really thought about it but you're right malec, it does make more sense to have a sound core since the shape of the tower twists. I imagine the Spire will have the same feature since they're digging a circular hole for the foundation but I'm not 100% sure.

They seem to be rebuilding the corners of the mechanical floor for some reason.
I think the reason the floor count has not moved is there has been a major fuck up on the mechanical floor. Im not a construction expert but it looks to me like something has gone wrong and cant progress further until it gets sorted out.
In this pic we can see that back on August 1st the mechanical floor had angled splays reducing the size of the floorplate to a smaller size for the higher floors.
http://i33.tinypic.com/zbuhs.jpg
We can see more clearly here that the reducing concreate pillars have been finished with purpose and look as they should.
http://i35.tinypic.com/255o13l.jpg
It would appear from Imre's latest pics that these areas have been covered for workers protection and remiedial work is in progress.
http://i36.tinypic.com/25iqfxc.jpg
A close up of the areas being worked on.
http://i34.tinypic.com/m7vwiv.jpg
Finally we can see that the angled concrete reduction plinths have been taken out for some reason.
http://i35.tinypic.com/i2oq9w.jpg
A word from braveheart on the subject would be great. At the least it provides a legitimate oportunity for a piss take.
Comments from the usual suspects also appreciated as SP dont seem to be greasing the wheels of communication lately. As i have said before i can deal with delays but i would just like to be kept informed.

Can anyone see evidence of reinforcement having been cut?
Note that the tapered section hasn't been completely removed. They've left maybe 600 of the taper.

The Palm Islands look impressive in the view. Amazing what Dubai is doing.
Aleks
Nov 3, 2008, 5:42 AM
The palms will look amazing once all the vegetation is in place!
I might have asked this before but I don't remember.... Why is it that skyscrapers in Dubai are being built mostly from concrete rather than steel? Well, wrong wording but here's an example...
These towers in Dubai have thin floor-plates on the top part of the U/C section but on the lower section there's more concrete added, creating smaller windows:
http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo34/melkor_gds/IMG_0650.jpg?t=1225075571
This tower here in Seattle has less concrete and more steel exposed:
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t325/Aleks0o04/f5e92b1a.jpg?t=1225690532
Anyways, I know there are various factors that affect the type of construction like use of the tower, finance, size, geography, design, etc... but I've noticed that even office towers are being built with a lot of concrete. Towers that on renderings look like they'll be made from a lot of glass are really just full of concrete and covered with glass everywhere... Even short buildings.
Not bashing Dubai, just wondering...

That's a very bad sign.
I hope this cancellation won't be the first in a long list.
It was cancelled because of overwhelming, and well-deserved, negative responses. This is the first time in Dubai history when the Sheikh (who has the ultimate say in what gets built and what doesn't) was bombarded with emails that outlined what is wrong with the proposal. There is no way that an action like that had no effect on a man overly concerned with selling a positive image of his emirate to the world at large. Remember, we're not dealing with standard Western development schemes here, where something like email bombardment of the developer may be casually looked over.

By the way, malec, what's the tower rising to the left of the marina crown?
Someone should tell them that skyscrapers only arnt making a city. There is just desert, highways and skyscrapers, it just looks wrong, this wont change if they will just add more skyscrapers to the scene. It just looks like some LasVegas hotel complex not like a true urban complex.

Every city is different. Not to say that Dubai's whole "just-add-people instant city" approach is necessarily right, but then again, we've never seen anything like this before in the world. Every other city has a long history, and who knows how this will turn out. It is a true experiment of city growth, design, and legacy. Personally, I'm very intrigued by it, and this could be the ENORMOUSLY HUGE first chapter in the life of city just as legendary as all the other greats. I'm not counting it out or in yet. I'm just excited...
