Hi all, first post here - downtown Fort Worth resident.
John R. got a lot of great Fort Worth Deco in his post earlier, but here's another - the old Kress five & dime store building here in downtown Fort Worth. Its ground floor now houses the Fox & Hound Pub, and the upper floors have just reopened as loft apartments:

The Kress building in context with some of its neighbors. Foreground - the Ashton Hotel, background - the Sinclair Building, previously mentioned in this thread.

Does anyone know of architects who currently design traditional art deco mid to high rises? If so, can you provide a link to their websites? Also, is anyone aware of any NEW mid to high rise buildings being built in the traditional art deco style?

Any Art Deco high-rises constructed today simply fall under the all-inclusive "Postmodern" label.

Are you familiar with any specific architects designing art deco under that label? Or of any particular developments? Thanks.

You're a bit confused. All of the pics you posted, with the exception of the Tribune building, are classic examples of beaux-arts, but they are decidedly not deco.
The Merchandise Mart is a good, if conservative, example. Anyone have pics from nighttime?I was about to reply and say pretty much the same thing.

This building does give me a sense of what an art deco building of newer construction might look like, but I'm interested in developing an almost replica like building from the art deco period. Ideally, it would look as if it were built during the art deco period. I wonder if I should be looking for an architect that specializes in historic architecture, specifically the art deco period, but I wouldn't have a clue where to begin my search. Thoughts? Thanks.

The Hulman Building was Dayton's tallest between 1931 and 1966:

It's a little thing we call scale. ;) I kid, I kid, but when you have nothing few else in a skyline, you can make anything look tall in these type of skylines.
I'd post photos of Battle Creek's tallest, the Heritage Tower, which looks very similar to this one, but I can't find any photos of it.

USSGahagan: Nashville's proposed Signature Tower (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=104768) certainly reminds me of some of the old Deco 'scrapers, albeit with something of a modern twist. 'bout as close as you'll get to old-school Deco these days, methinks.
Locally, Melbourne's Mitchell House is a good example of Deco in Australia.

A variation of the Art Deco style is found specifically in the Southwest and is referred to as Pueblo Deco. This style still contains the abstraction, repetition and angularity characteristics of Art Deco ornamentation. Pueblo Deco combines Art Deco with Pueblo Revival architecture. A unique aspect used widely in Pueblo Deco is the inclusion of motifs taken from Native American pottery, baskets, textiles and jewelry. One of the best examples of Pueblo Deco style is the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix .

CONSIDER the cool curves of Art Deco architecture and the image that springs to mind is more likely to be New York's Chrysler building than the Myer building in Bourke Street.
But while Melburnians may have been slow to notice the city's Art Deco inheritance, they seem to be making up for it now. Art Deco apartments are suddenly prime property, and Melbourne has been chosen to stage the ninth International Art Deco Congress in April.
Barry Humphries, one of Melbourne's most outspoken architectural critics and renowned collector of Art Deco antiques, has been appointed patron of the biennial event, which is expected to attract devotees from around the world.
Art Deco Society president Robin Grow said Melbourne has some of the finest examples of the architectural style, which had its genesis in 1925 at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, and became one of the major design influences of the 20th century.
Definitions vary, but Mr Grow said Art Deco design was characterised by the clean, geometric lines that replaced the ornate decorations of the Edwardian and Victorian eras.
Because it coincided with the advent of mass production, Art Deco design shaped the interiors of buildings and even influenced consumer items such as refrigerators, toasters and crockery.
"Its influence has been pervasive and you can see it in virtually anything, from furniture to jewellery to industrial design," Mr Grow said.
While Art Deco, or moderne, is usually associated with the period between the world wars, the unique style has attracted a legion of new admirers.
South Yarra real estate agent Philippe Batters said Art Deco apartments were the "hottest ticket in property design" among generation X buyers.
"It becomes a real passion and they spend a small fortune decking their houses out with the Art Deco furniture, sculpture and art," he said. "Art Deco apartments, particularly those that have remained authentic, are commanding top dollar and are probably more in demand than Victorian properties at the moment."
But it has not always been the case, according to Mr Grow, who says heritage groups were slow to recognise the significance of Art Deco to Melbourne. "People are quick to jump to the defence of Edwardian or Victorian buildings, but anything built after the First World War does not seem to generate the same response."
The Art Deco Society has played a major role in the preservation of Art Deco-inspired buildings, ensuring that renovation work remained loyal to the moderne style. Last year it successfully nominated the Myer buildings in Bourke Street to the Victorian Heritage Register.
Phillip Goad, a professor of architecture at Melbourne University, said many of Melbourne's department stores were built during the boom period following the First World War and provided some of the best examples of Art Deco and commercial Gothic. The Manchester Unity building, Mitchell House and the McPherson building encapsulated the architectural style.
He said Melbourne rated well on an international basis, with Los Angeles, New York, Buenos Aires and Cape Town all havens for enthusiasts. Napier, in New Zealand's North Island, is considered by many as the international centre of the Art Deco movement, after it was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1931 and remodelled.
The congress in Melbourne will include presentations, lectures and tours of some of the city's most prominent Art Deco buildings and several hidden treasures in North Balwyn, Elwood and the Dandenongs.

What a jawdropping, tearjerkingly beautiful thread. S-w-o-o-o-o-o-n!!!
Glad people remembered Hoover Dam, The Hoover Building, and Niagara Mohawk!!
I'd like to see some elevator door inlays at Rockefeller Plaza, and the art deco neighborhoods in Miami with all the neon lines lit up at night! And some of the classic buildings in Germany.
In my area of Eastern Oregon, we have The Dalles High School in The Dalles, and the old Joseph Building in La Grande.
There's a real good photo-journal in flickr.com regarding the Hoover Building. Hard to believe this masterpiece was in such disrepair for such a long time.

The Barron building, although quite nice with some attractive and fascinating details hardly qualifies as Art Deco. It is more art Moderne if you want to get picky.Calgary's only example of Deco is The Bank of Nova Scotia on 8th Ave.
It doesn't even qualify in all fields.
Judging from the photos in this thread, I think there's a few more art deco buildings in Calgary, such as AGT building, model milk building, York hotel, Tivoli theatre, perhaps the old library in Crescent heights and even the Sharon lutheran church.
However, as I said these are similar to other photos in the thread, but I'm a bit confused, I thought art deco was more curvy lines and sleek shapes and such vs intense ornamentation, am I wrong?

So it's in both threads.
This is the Worcester telegraph building, built in 1928. It's not that tall, but its position on top of a hill overlooking downtown (and the antennae on the roof) still gives it some prominence.

hey guys, not sure how to post the source for the commerce bank photo above on an old post, so i am posting it below:

^ That link appears to be broken. But you should try posting via one of the photo-hosting sites, like photobucket or flickr. There are others as well.

flickr.com (www.flickr.com)
Upload the photo to one of these sites, copy the url, and then paste it into this page with & at either end, if needed (pb already formats the link this way, flickr doesn't).

Art Deco is just...holy,sacred and divine. no other style has ever(and i doubt will ever) come even slightly close to its sheer beauty.Art Deco embodies the best in us and should have continued to live on. im taking this time to take off my hat off the greatest style of architecture that humanity has every spawned.
and now heres my pick for the God of all art Deco Skyscrapers, the Chrysler Building.

That's a neo-gothic building. A few details here and there have a little bit of an art deco influence (hard to avoid, since it was built during the height of art deco), but the building is pretty thoroughly neo-gothic.

That's what I was thinking as well, especially with the flying butresses up near the top. It almost resembles the top of a steeple on a gothic cathedral in Europe...
I must say, I find art-deco/art-modern architecture to be quite breath-taking...

Århus Rådhus(City Hall) in Denmark is a good example of Art Deco's cousin functionalism. I'm sneaking it in here because it's damned beautiful(IMO).

Great thread; I just combed through the replies and now have a bunch of new buildings to add to the WAM database (which needs more Art Deco). The patterns of setbacks in Art Deco high-rises are always pleasing to the eye.
Also, feel free to check out the WAM page for Art Deco Architecture (http://www.worldarchitecturemap.org/styles/4b761288-6740-4c9f-9ef6-62124051e4b0), and let me know which great examples I am missing.
Here's one of my favorite examples (already posted, but i figured one more wouldn't hurt): The Palmolive Building (http://www.worldarchitecturemap.org/buildings/4b9fb7b5-d4e8-4122-b80a-1ea24051e4b0) in Chicago (http://www.worldarchitecturemap.org/locations/4afb3f67-cdb0-4ab0-a461-7287c0a80001), Designed by Holabird & Root (http://www.worldarchitecturemap.org/firms/4b8dfa28-a390-4985-b710-735f4051e4b0)

I bring this back, because today we reviewed here a replay movie Superman Returns and i found incredible the Art Deco building, not payed much attention first, because is superman, but now considering only the architecture and the art-deco interior of yacht... well, tremendous impressive the details, just because mainly is my preference of style. Can someone tell me if the building really exists like that? cause i found in net, don't, it was a montage, but based in a real one. Do one has pics current real building to check and comparing? fabulous if some retro-architect could put that in real... Lobby, entrance are fantastic. Found this one somewhere as reference.

Here's a beautiful Art Deco building... Now the Drury Plaza Hotel, San Antonio, Texas. It may not be 100% true Deco, I'm sure there are some additional elements that are not traditional (ie: huge stained glass window above the main entrance), but it's a freaking awesome building!

Parkview Square in Singapore
Parkview Square lobby would easily qualify as one of Singapore's most awesome ceilings...
It's perhaps not a classic ceiling, having been completed in 2003 :-)

The exterior, yes - the interior, no. The interior looks almost like an Edwardian space that got a deco makeover.
There is something very Chinese about the interior - can't quite put my finger on what it is.

Yeah, I agree, without knowing anything about it, it wouldn't look like it was built in 2003, but there's something really peculiar about it. Knowing that it was built recently, you can sort of tell that the space itself and the planning and that kind of stuff is recent, while the detailing isn't.

^exactly, it is what i noticed also. Wonderfully detailed made, but my conclusions are:
1. the exterior is not only art-deco, it has in main middle facade elements of post-modern with an neo-art-deco top, but the combination is wonderful simple rescuing the best part of art-deco facades, the tops and the botoms. I see also a post-modern appearance streamlined, but not equally seen in Florida, rounded in someway, seen in the 40ies years. A neo-art-deco soft in middle with more better worked top. Any way the balance all together is appropriate in the style and not too carried.
2. for interior, it came from the fact it is something like a thai taste using extreme exagerated details of plants, the common entrelace of foliage used most in small channels boats, hats and corbs, thing of artesanate mixed high in trelace with those 40ies statues/lamps elements. For me the furniture is taken from the 40ies, while the building itself was sculpid with local men force, a mix of both. This is mainly seen too much in ceilings rips, when also the gold color tendency is to a little green in them, other the yellow ton in most of the rest. Of course the whole effect is tremendous detailed beautiful, but has a campestre bamboo touch, not only future human vision of art-deco. At end is Deco and Art, art of extrem decorated, so it fits, as a neo-art-deco style with an oriental local touch. I would say also that the ceilings rips has a small resemblance of papirus or lotus immitations egypt ancient times of temples on them. But nature and human elements of art-deco, a little bit other interpreted is there.

It is sorta making a half-assed comeback.
Here is a sort of wannabe-Art Deco building that is under construction in Toronto. It is called the Uptown Residences.

They cheapened it a lot which is disappointing but it isn't too bad on the skyline.

1. agree, in a way the style changed to only post-modern in this small picture.
2. Theater was more interesting, stylish saying, but seems not in same site, according to following posts below.

Los Angeles has art deco all over the city but it's best example would have to be Bullocks Wilshire. It's holy. It's just beautiful. Truly beautiful. They really don't make them like this anymore. Majestic, marvelous, powerful, luxurious, stunning, emphatic, graceful.

There are two of these on either side of avenue Henri Barbusse, at the end of which stands the Villeurbanne city hall (place Lazare Goujon):
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/Place_lazare_goujon.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/Place_lazare_goujon.jpg
The whole area was developed in the 1930s (obviously) in an ultimately successful attempt to give Villeurbanne a proper civic centre and avoid amalgamation with Lyon.
Altough the towers are short and quite plain for Art Deco, the whole avenue really warrants being seen in person.
