post pics of your favorites, the best your city has to offer, or overlooked gems:
A few of my picks out of what I consider the best architectural style for skyscrapers:
Carbide & Carbon Building, Michigan Ave, Chicago. Green brick and 24k gold on the crown. According to legend the architects got the idea from a champagne bottle:

American International Building (70 Pine Street), NYC Financial District:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/naptown05/263235.jpg
The Deco is in the Details: model of the building carved into the limestone entrance facade, and lamps, in aluminum:

can you spot the now-closed obervation deck? Imagine the penthouses you could get, with those terraces, if this building was converted to residential. It's 952 feet to the tip of the flagpole:
http://www.nyc-architecture.com/SCC/SCC010G2.jpg
Cushman liked it, back when it was the tallest building downtown:
http://www.nyc-architecture.com/SCC/SCC010-A03.jpg
The Hotel Carlyle, Madison Avenue, Upper East Side NYC; google wasn't returning a lot of pics, but it really does stand out at night, seen from Central Park:

The GE Building (570 Lexington Avenue): behind St. Bart's, across the street from the Waldorf=Astoria:

might have the most interesting crown of any skyscraper- gothic tracery reinterpreted as radio waves:

the once and future Boyd Theater, most recently the Sameric:
http://www.robbender.com/gallery/albums/boyd/IMG_2068.sized.jpg
like so many Philadelphia buildings, it isn't much to look at from the outside, but it has a nearly 100% intact art deco interior: colored frosted glass, exetic marble, metalwork, the whole shebang:
lobby:

auditorium:
http://www.robbender.com/gallery/albums/boyd/CRW_2991.sized.jpg
http://www.robbender.com/gallery/albums/boyd/CRW_3086.sized.jpg
it was within weeks of being demolished a few years ago, when the movie theater closed down, but now it's being restored as a music venue (by Clearchannel, but it beats losing it)

there is art deco and there is everything else. i wish i could have lived when it was still in its heyday. can't think of anything art deco in houston but syracuse, NY probably has one of the finest examples:

The Barron building, although quite nice with some attractive and fascinating details hardly qualifies as Art Deco. It is more art Moderne if you want to get picky.Calgary's only example of Deco is The Bank of Nova Scotia on 8th Ave.
It doesn't even qualify in all fields.

Greenville's most prominent display of Art Deco was actually not built until the late 1990's. Poinsett Plaza (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=127347) is a 13-story office tower that houses the headquarters for The South Financial Group, and has luxury condominiums in the tops floors.

You're a bit confused. All of the pics you posted, with the exception of the Tribune building, are classic examples of beaux-arts, but they are decidedly not deco.
The Merchandise Mart is a good, if conservative, example. Anyone have pics from nighttime?

The Barron building, although quite nice with some attractive and fascinating details hardly qualifies as Art Deco. It is more art Moderne if you want to get picky.Calgary's only example of Deco is The Bank of Nova Scotia on 8th Ave.
It doesn't even qualify in all fields.
If you want to get even pickier, Art Moderne is an offshoot of Art Deco architecture. If you want to get so literal as to disqualify the said building from the Art Deco style, I might as well bring up Art Deco in its original form, at the Paris World Fair of Arts Decoratifs, which is true and pure Art Deco. It featured awkwardly propotioned buildings that otherwise followed the vernacular of the time, with the exception of more unusual, streamlined elements of detail, which covered most of the buildings. Art Moderne was essentially America's spin on the earlier, more raw French original, exaggerating forms into more streamlined, refined masses and more proportioned detail and expression of structural elements, as well as more industrial forms (Art Deco is to Art Moderne as Daniel Burnham is to Louis Sullivan, if you will). If you're going to discount that one building as 'Moderne' and thus not Art Deco, you might as well remove virtually every building posted here in this thread as 'Moderne,' including the Chrysler Building.
Some Art Moderne, just for you:

Oh yes, the excellent Battersea Power Station. Actually there has some interesting Deco buildings in London...Shell House is another.
For Ohio Deco, even smaller cities had their little Art Deco towers. You can see two on this old postcard from Mansfield, Ohio

The tallest building in Dayton until the 1950s, the Hulman Building, is also Art Deco...

I have sort of a long answer to your question SuperstarMark. There has been a lot of redevelopment in the area over the last few years, and when I took the photograph, the building was only being used as a commuter rail station. At that time, the upper floors were vacant. The office tenant had just vacated the building for better offices in downtown.
Since the 1950's an overhead freeway ran in front of the building, and over the last several years, the city worked in getting the overhead relocated at grade to the rear of the building. I took the photo shortly after the overhead freeway was demolished in 2004. It was a great opportunity for a photo because you didn't have a clear view of the building previously. That explains all of the destruction in front of it. In 2001, the depot portion of the building started being used as a commuter rail station for the Trinity Railway Express, so at the time I took the picture, only a small part of it was being used. As I mentioned earlier, the only tenant moved out earlier in 2004 and then the owner announced he was going to convert the building into apartments. A smaller apartment building was constructed to the east of the tower as a part of this redevelopment. The apartments actually opened as condominiums in July. You probably will ask why I haven't taken a new photo. The reason is that the area where the overhead freeway was removed is still under construction for conversion into a grand boulevard entrance into downtown. They ran into major delays due to utilities being in the wrong locations, but slowly they are rebuilding the street. I didn't want to take any more photos from that view until the street is completed. The lobby is used for special occasions, small antique shows, meetings, and other events.

It figures that I take a vacation from the computer for a few days and a thread on my favorite architectural style appears. Great thread. It is nice to see more than just the Chrysler and ESB; the Eastern Columbia Building is amazing.
I think I might still have a few items to contribute even though many Detroit buildings have already been shown including at least one picture I took of the Fort Street facade of the Penobscot (the following photos are all mine).
Architect Louis Kamper, after spending much of his career designing Beaux Arts classical style building such as the Book Tower shown on the left of the picture below, designed the Industrial Apartment Building (1928) on the right:
http://www.maj.com/gallery/DecoJim/DowntownDetroit/booktower22.jpg
The Albert Kahn Building (1931, New Center area, near the Fisher Building):
http://www.maj.com/gallery/DecoJim/DetroitBuildings/albertkahnbuilding.jpg
Upper portion of Detroit Music Hall facade:
http://www.maj.com/gallery/DecoJim/DetroitBuildings/musichall02.jpg
Four miles north of Eight Mile road in the suburb of Royal Oak stands a large Art Deco church:
http://www.maj.com/gallery/DecoJim/DecoChurch/shrine01.jpg
The sunburst pattern, a common theme in Art Deco, is employed dramatically here as is the stepped Mayan "arch". If you look back at the Guardian Building in a prior post, you will notice the stepped arch used there as well.
http://www.maj.com/gallery/DecoJim/DecoChurch/shrine10.jpg
Here are a couple of Fisher Building details (see prior posts for full shots of the building):

I've always liked the Hoover Dam memorial angel- very dramatic.
We have one in Philly that's sort of similar- a very late example, from 1952, but it's definitely got deco sensibilities- The Angel of Resurrection, memorial to the men and women of the Pennsylvania Railraod who served and died in WWII:

Completed in the early 1930s, 30th Street Station itself is definitely neoclassical in concept, but deco in execution:

You're right, LITZ, that John H. McClathchy building as a whole is very overblown but a close-up of the details shows they had the right idea and craftsmanship but...jeeeze, they needed to pull back just a little. It looks like a giant wedding cake.

Awesome thread, Art Deco is easily my favorite architecture style.
Does anyone have any more pictures of the interiors of Art Deco buildings?
Speaking of interiors, does anyone know where you can buy Art Deco style pieces to furnish your house? I am often wondering if there are still companies that make pieces inspired by Art Deco, or if you have to resort to antiques?

^Wish we had that building downtown.
Wilmington really has only one example, the Nemours building. It was built by DuPont in the 1930's. It's doesn't have alot of the daring Deco design, which is probably because DuPont was such a staid company. The lobby has some cool Deco touches on the doors, elevators (another thread), and the lettering and clocks. To bad I don't have any photos of it. Anyways here it is:

Portland doesnt have any art deco towers but Seattle has a nice one, the Seattle Tower...
http://www.ci.seattle.wa.us/Neighborhoods/preservation/images/large/SeattleTower3DON.jpg
Look very closely at the brick on this tower... it gradually and very carefully fades from dark brown brick at the base to lighter brown brick at the top. this is not an accident but was intended by the architect to imitate a snow capped mountain.

Hi, here are some photos of the Vancovuer City Hall building, completed in 1936. The building's style stands at a transitional point between the vertical, highly ornamented Art Deco style and the simpler, more horizontal Moderne.http://www.ufodigest.com/news/0906/cityhall.htmlhttp://www.worldofstock.com/closeups/TAW2660.phphttp://www.flickr.com/photos/jmv/48436355/http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/cityhall/# and the Marine Building; http://www.terragalleria.com/pictures-subjects/entrances/picture.entrances.cabc10814.htmlhttp://www.execu-suites.com/building.htmlhttp://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=113268http://www.vancouverhistory.ca/archives_marine_building.htm

The streamlined moderne 1360 Montgomery Street, San Francisco:
I noticed this building last month when I was going up Telegraph Hill. I just came across the name of it now, looking for info on how high the hill was. The murals are silvery foil against white stucco:

http://www.mistersf.com/images/malloch05.jpghttp://www.mistersf.com/images/malloch003.jpghttp://www.mistersf.com/images/malloch04.jpg
http://www.mistersf.com/images/malloch02.jpg See the view of the Bay Bridge, mirroring the mural?
The apartments were built in '38-'39, at a time when the Hill was changing from a difficult-to-reach working-class enclave to a place appreciated by wealthier people who moved there for the views. The murals celebrate the newly opened Bay Bridge, as well as reflecting the areas's character and the 1930s preoccupation with workers and socialist themes in art.

LMich: that Knapp building reminds me a lot of one of my favorite overlooked buildings in DC, the Hecht warehouse on New York Avenue. Possibly the most full realized use of glass block in architecture, in my opinion (with the exception of Renzo Piano's Hermes store in Tokyo):

sorry for the crappy pics. DC actually has a lot of 1930s architecture, probably because FDR's expansion of the government provided jobs.

which was the first art deco building?
I do not know about all buildings but my guess as to the first Art Deco skyscraper would be the Barclay-Vesey Building (begun in 1923) in New York.
http://hex.oucs.ox.ac.uk/~rejs/holidays/nyc2002/barclayvesey.jpg
(not my picture - shows building undergoing repair after 9/11 damage.)
The following link has a number of vintage photo and postcard images of the Barclay-Vesey.

The American Standard or Radiator Building (1924) also in New York is the first that perfected the setback designs used in so many Art Deco skyscrapers since then.

It was built for the Chicago "Century of Progress" in 1933. And it was demolished after the fair. But damn, I love it: The Chrysler Building

^I used to collect items from the 1933-34 Century Of Progress while out "junking", that is until such items have become very collectable and priced beyond what I can afford.
I too have always loved the looks of this Chrysler building. It's a damn shame they were temporary.

I love Art Deco! Its such a great expression of feeling in architecture. I love the incorporation of the symbols of progress and human achievement that are frequently incorporated in the architecture. Art Deco is Conservative (though it can get quite extravagant), yet classy, and don't forget badass all at the same time.
I hope that we get a Neo-Art Deco movement or something like that sometime. I would be great to see what kind of grand buildings we could build with todays technology. Imagine the kind of vertical lines you could get on a 1500 foot wall! I have noticed that, as mentioned before, a few designs in Chicago, i.e. One Museum Park, are remeniscent of Art Deco.
It would also be good to get a few pics of the new Marquette innerchange thats going up in Milwaukee, its actually very Art Deco. Some pictures can be found by paging through the flash feature at this website: http://www.mchange.org/page.jsp?&key=vps
Other than the geometric lines and pale yellow coloring, the historcal mural/raised concrete figures depicting the citizens of Milwaukee freeing escaped slave Joshua Glover from slave hunters. This art is all very reminescent of the imagry that you find on these historic buildings. I'm very excited that they decided to do something cool with the interchange project!
