Awesome - thanks - nice looking building. Sure beats the old Farmington Hills office park... which was quite bland. And I like the lighting on it.

Are there still a fair number of abandoned buildings in the downtown core, or is that area filling in? I recall the street where the CPWR hq was to be built had quite a few empty storefronts and wig shops at the time...

Most all the storefront facades have been renovated along that, and quite a few filled, but there are still quite a few vacant. Were the Merchants Row and Woodward Center condominiums under renovation when you were there because they've filled in most of the area. Even still, the area looks a MILLION times better than it did just a few years ago, and here are some examples...

There's a new, trendy clothing store at Merchants Row called Studio Couture Detroit. It has a nice, transparent facade. Something that pretty much every street downtown lacks. That's obviously changing rapidly.

No, I think it's the abandoned buildings, the empty shell of a city that remains, the homeless, or possibly the fact that there is no gradient to that "city", for great want of a better word, that is attractive. Ugh. The other day it was so foggy everything was coated in gloom; it's like the sun never shines here.

Do you actually realize how far down the path to receivorship Detroit really is? Do you have any idea how bad things are? It's the poorest city in the nation.
It's so bad that people are pulling their dead relatives out of Detroit at a higher rate than population is growing.
I don't like to purposefully knock anything, but it isn't insulting when I say that until I actually moved to Michigan I had never known that poverty and abandoned buildings were so prolific in North America. Detroit is a very bad joke, and I know that I for one am not laughing. Or trying to somehow paint over it with pictures of the .0000000001% of it that still stands.
Yeah, so I'm not "part of the solution", but I'm not lying through a photo lens. Detroit has so many severe problems I feel that pictures such as these (and those insipid casino commercials) are to Detroit what a pictures of someone floating in a suburban pool are to southern India being destroyed by monsoons.

Ellaborate on "real". Hollywood? Sounds like you're getting your ass kicked here in Michigan. It'll do that to the weaklings. Like a sour taste in its mouth, it will be happy to spit you out back where you came from. :D

And just so you're aware, asking TNTD to realize the reality of Detroit is like telling God all he needs to know about Heaven.

If you are in a desperate search to find a group of people who can't be more honest about Detroit, YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!

Are you Dick DeVos? Seriously?! Your argument is basically blame blame blame, followed by woe, blame, over-exaggeration, and then you even pull it together with some comparison to India (where I'm sure Mr. DeVos knows well since he will move jobs there next...)

Thats really the beauty of the lying camera, though. I didn't doctor one of my photos. I didn't add an extra light on in a building or copy happy people on every street corner. I simply display what MY city looks like. And whether your doomsday-laden commentary (as if we aren't used to that!) doesn't get it or - worse yet - can't get it - try to get my simple point here:

WE ARE BUILDING UP AND BUILDING UP -SLOWLY TO BE SURE- AS A GREAT CITY AGAIN BECAUSE WE'VE ALWAYS BEEN A GREAT CITY.

Where people like you slam Detroit by saying 1 Ten-Billiononth of it still stands (you must live here to buy such good crack, dude) the rest of us are enjoying a night at Slows BBQ, watching thousands of new lofts rise, watching a Westin grow from a ruin and watching thousands of people filling this city nearly nightly just for the fact that it is THE city!

I won't lie. Times are rough - there's crime that is still too high, public schools that cannot meet expectations, an auto industry that will behave in the 21st century in a way it never had to in the 20th... but how you can't or won't see the great successes that are still happening is beyond me.

Like I've said for years, Mr. DeVos-in-scribeman's-clothing: you won't be the first person to abandon Detroit, but get out of here fast and let the people who do care and do work for this renaissance - in whatever way they can - keep doing what you choose not to.

just a question scribe, to what extend has ur involvement with Detroit been? And if ur so critical of abandonment and of the City of Detroit why doesnt Birmingham/Royal Oak/Somerset suit your needs? its probably as rich or richer than anywhere you're intending on going. Furthermore, dont post on this website with such resolution as if YOU have something to tell us. Especially without any knowledge of urban issues, or even Detroit based statistics, which your analysis clearly shows you lack...assclown

let me just say, that TNTD is right...you won't be the first person to abandon Detroit. But for me, Detroit has almost a romantic attraction, one that recognizes the grit but also the resiliance of its people and city. When it returns to a level that dumbasses like you can enjoy, then we will appreciate it sooooo much more...when you come back to visit your family or friends or whatever like 40 years later, youll be like Detroit is so much better than it used to be, etc etc..but it wont mean anything the way it will for us

Take Detroit as what it is. I find that it stimulates my mind. When I view the city I see its past, present and what could be. There is beauty in the decay, but even more in the way people have formed communities in the face of adversity.

hudkina
Oct 25, 2006, 3:13 AM
scribeman, every city has crime, poverty, and abandonment issues. Detroit just happens to have a bigger problem than most. Granted, it doesn't have the highest crime rate nor is it the poorest city nor does it have the worst schools. What it does have though is the worst public image, and you only perpetuate that image by spouting nonsense. I can guarantee that you've seen little of the city and know even less about it, so before you make yourself into an even bigger fool, I suggest you stop right there.

of course it isn't real... and it probably looks quite stupid, but it was kind of fun to take a stab at. I suppose I should've gone the extra step and accentuated the windows somehow - all I did was select the area, and then use the lighting tool in photoshop to create an imaginary beam. (coming from the bottom corners)

Yeah, with the downtown being laid out like it is, this is probably one of the few views were you can get a good spread of the skyscrapers from within. I kind of like it better than the typical Broderick Tower view pan to the south which really squishes the skyline together. The only other good view I can think of if the one you get from the top of the Book Tower looking down into C-Mart.

It's a stark and unapologetic welcome to Detroit, and represents, perfectly, the toughness of post-riot Detroit. Like the city, it is what it is. I really like how the industrial look of Ford Field, on the left, complements the whole scene.

Actualy Detroiters call these flats, not duplexes. If you had units side by side and each unit had a second floor(which would be bedrooms & a bathroom)they would be detached townhomes. Theres a unit downstairs and an identical unit upstairs in these buildings. The second door on the front(usually the left one)is a stairway that leads upstairs. The only time you will find units side by side is when you have a flat that has more than 2 units(4 & 8 family flats).
In some cases you might see just one door in the front, leading a person to think it's one big house. Most of those have stairs on the back porch leading up to the 2nd floor porch with the entrence usually through the kitchen. The back stairs like that are parallel to the structure similar to how a fire escape is. Just in case you might not have known, or just a little insight on homes like this for anyone in general that might not know.

^ Interesting stuff Exodus. What is on the 3rd floor and in the basement? Just curious. The "3rd floor" is actually an attic, and it is storage space for who ever lives on the second floor. The basement is storage area for who ever lives on the first floor. In some cases I've known people to turn either the basement or the attic into bedrooms, which both are just high enough to do. The only thing shared by both units is stuff like the water heater and furnace and what ever, which is in the basement.

Every basement level I've ever seen in Detroit duplexes (and that's what I've always called these and heard other Detroiters call these, and flat and duplex often used interchangably) have been laundry rooms for everyone in the structure.
