Per STR's request, I've uploaded some pictures of the original WTC's lowrises, plaza and concourse. These are NOT pictures I took. Rather, I collected them from the web soon after 9/11/01 (since I was afraid people would start removing all pics of the WTC from the web). Note that these pictures run the gamut from recent to rather old (i.e., some are from before the original 7 WTC was built).

Unfortunately, pictures of this area of the WTC are hard to find. I'm afraid there's only one dimly lit picture of the concourse in this collection. And, the lowrises don't appear much, either. But, this is better than nothing, I guess.

If any of you guys have more pictures of these areas, please share them. Actually, if you guys have ANY uncommon pics of the WTC, it'd be great to see them. (By "uncommon", I mean things other than the two towers taken from across the river ;) )

Not mine. From "SnappyRoo’s Twin Towers Tribute". You have to sometimes fish around in the parent directory for the images as some of the webpage links to the pics are broken.

Taken the weekend before they were destroyed...

I remember my first visit to the WTC site in 1999-2000 or so. However, I don't even think I noticed the Twin Towers then. I just remember a bunch of kids skating those exact rails, and one almost fucking himself up by falling off one of those rails.

Life takes us on interesting turns sometimes. How amazing would it be if I actually saw you there?

^ That's the best picture I've ever seen of the TKTS booth-area. And the "OnStage" ads are on the 2 WTC windows! I didn't remember that. I wish there were closer-up pictures. It's really striking that the graphic on my brochure matches the one in the window... something I can physically hold in my hands to confirm reality.

Don't be hard on yourself. Even though it won't be outdoor, in a few years it will be there once again you will get that chance. :)

Thanks for being so hopeful

I had the chance, but not the choice. We stopped in the 2 WTC lobby for tickets, and everything else was scheduled. :( I loved observation decks though, 'cause we went to the ESB and it was amazing. The Twin Towers just blended in with the cityscape for me back then, so I don't remember them specifically (from the ESB)... and I've been back there 3 times to try to envision them the way I saw it in June 2001.

Haha, also... I met Gary Sinise the same singular day I went in the WTC. And saw Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick walking out of their theatre back in "The Producers"' heyday. It was a memorable day.

Anyway, I'm so glad they put the Freedom Tower obs deck at the same level. It gives us all another chance... a new chance.

Thank you.

Yes, it IS comforting to know that the obs deck in the Freedom Tower will be at the same height as the old Twins were!

And that it should be just as nice. And you can bet your bottom dollar that I WILL be there to visit this one!! I want to especially see what I missed before the Twins were destroyed.

Maybe this thread should just be named Pics of Original WTC? And just post everything u guys got there?

Yes, but there should be a rule: only "uncommon" pics of the original WTC are allowed (I realize that's quite subjective). What I mean is, we've all seen enough pics of the Twin Towers from the river, so those type of pics shouldn't be included. What we want here are closeup images of areas that most people haven't seen.

It'd be great if people had pics of the underground concourse, but I understand why there are so few pics of that (most people don't think of taking pics of an underground mall!)

Here are pics I'd be interested in seeing:

a) Underground concourse
b) Indoor observation deck, where the focus is more on the inside as opposed to the view outside
c) Outdoor deck
d) The surrounding streets of the WTC
e) Inside office floors (cubicles, etc.)
f) Any and all pics of the hotel (inside, closeup of outside)
g) Closeups of the lobby (although I believe these are rather common)

CHAPINM1

This new observation deck may also have some cool new features that the previous one didn't. There may be something to substitute for there not being an ouside observation deck, I don't know what, but there will probably be something pretty cool in addition to the very same views we are about to get back!

I get chills sometimes looking at these interior pictures and thinking these are some of the places where a lot of people spent the last moments of their lives. Everything shown in them is gone.

I know, it actually does make me think of all that now that also... I think the photo Album dated September 01, 2001, is really scary to look at because just knowing that not even 2 weeks after that was when 9/11 occured.

My memory of the Windows on the World from when I was little will be forever altered, whenever I see those pictures, it brings back the throught about what was going on in there after the plane hit and before the Tower collapsed and the horrors the 73 Windows on the World employee's were going through during their final minutes in that that very same room.

http://static.flickr.com/79/249370457_5766a90cf1_o.jpg
Do they illuminate somehow? Or have some kind of coating?

Compare with the last 2 pictures to see.

*EDIT 2* Okay, I'm beginning to figure this out. They have different designs, so they're 2 different posts. BUT, they appear in the same spot.

The "glowing-red" version's picture was taken 9-4-01, and "regular" was taken 6-4-01. Was it replaced with a more "hi-tech" glowing version within those months?

yeah, that's the old sign. they were painted over within a couple days, right before 9/11. the red was like a matte finish and, from what i can remember, nothing was illuminated on it.

http://www.brokenheartelectric.com/albums/WTC/WTC_sign.jpg

i think i remember the signs outside the plaza being different from the ones in those pictures though. i swear there were old signs that were larger and made out of reflective aluminum on the sidewalk. - can anyone confirm this?

^The sidewalk signs were taller than the plaza signs. And they were repainted in 1999, not "just before 9/11", when the plaza was repaved and the pink benches and planters were added

Check out the "OnStage!" graphics... I'm not sure they advertised that in early 2001, so it had to've been the later months.

I'm guessing they replaced it somewhere between 6-4-01 and 9-4-01.

*EDIT* The timestamp on the "red" sign reveals it was taken: 6/9/01 at 2:37 PM. So, it was changed between 6-4-01 and 6-9-01.

I made it to the Obs. deck a few times, but the roof always seemed to be closed. But I did make it to the roof once. Surprisingly the view wasn't what i thought, since you were away from the edge of the building. The thing about being on the roof obs. level that was great was looking over at Tower 1 and the massive antenna. It was quite a view.

Yes, show them, please.

We were indeed hoping to get an outdoor obs deck as well, but with the new spire / antenna arrangement, that seems highly unlikely now.

But having the INDOOR obs deck, at this point, is better than none at all. We WERE at least pushing for a few of the things that the old WTC had, and we will get them.

But at least, in time, we will once again have the highest viewing point on the East Coast!!!

I wonder if the spire of the FT will be visible from this same angle, unlike the North Tower's antenna... it would be awesome if it extended the impression of height even beyond that we see in this view.

The height of the spire / antennna might have a lot to do with it.

The antenna on the North Tower was only just over 300 feet. Also, the shape of the Freedom Tower might have something to do with it as well, since it will taper inward as it soars into the sky.

Here are a few video clips I found on YouTube on the WTC. For those of you who never got to go up, they give you a glimpse of what the experience was like.

1. A tourist video from June 2001. Shows the outdoor deck and a bit of the lobby at the beginning of the clip. Notice how BIG the lobbies were (people always think of the WTC as being tall; they often forget how massive each tower was)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGJElpnMs70

2. This is a scene from "Mazes and Monsters" (a movie I've never heard of, but has a young Tom Hanks). It shows the WTC lobby and both the indoor and outdoor decks (these areas are as they looked before the mid-90's renovations). At the very end of the clip, you get a good look of the outdoor deck.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IkuQouJqOA

3. This video contains the complete "virtual" helicopter ride that people could see for free at the indoor observation deck (it was included with the price of admission). Also at the beginning of the video, you can see a glimpse of the underground area, as well as some footage of the lobby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsteYt5CLXI

4. This silent video clip shows both the outdoor and indoor decks. Unfortunately, the guy who taped it didn't seem to know how to keep the camera steady when he was outside (nor did he seem to know how to adjust the lens to use a wide-angle view). About 3 minutes into the video, you see the indoor deck. Again, notice how massive the floor was!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfqCnFQ5EFs

5. This video is a short tribute. What's cool is that you get to see the view from the indoor deck while clouds float by below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ov4VJKuF5E

6. The longest of the video clips (taken by a tourist). Mainly shows the indoor deck.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy_8mZbhKfo

It was cool seeing these clips, especially the outdoor deck scenes. My last time on the outdoor deck I believe was 1991 (my last time going up at all was 1997, but the outdoor deck was closed that day :( ) Considering I live in NYC, I regret not having gone more often (then again, who knew there was gonna be a time limit to being able to go up?)

The 107th was a very large floor, as it was almost entirely open space with only 8 elevators and a few columns breaking up what would otherwise be 42,000 square feet.

The WTC was a huge thing in my Childhood, I lived in California, but as a kid I loved Skyscrapers, I used to draw the Twin Towers all the time.

I even remember making a wish in a fountian, at a church when I was probably in 2nd or 1st Grade, around 1998-2000
"I wish I will work in the World Trade Center and live in New York"

It sucks that I'll never see that dream come true, I never visited the towers in person. My dad did on a business trip in April 2001, he stayed at the Marriott World Financial Center, about 2 blocks from the towers. He said the towers where amazing, he took great pictures.

I should scan then some day.

"I wish I will work in the World Trade Center and live in New York".

I felt almost the same and it was one of my biggest goals for me to see the twin towers at least once in my life.
After 9/11 I was completely disillusioned about that matter. There will never
be anything like them.
It's not about height, its not about design, it's just the one WTC that will never ever be back again.

I don't care what others say, to me the WTC was blessed by some special kind of architectural beauty, a masterpiece of clearly defined forms and bright facades.
And of course the fact of standing in front of a 417m straight up steel tower, which surely was a view and feeling that created a "what-the-f*ck?-feeling" to the visitor...:D

Hope to see the Freedom Tower some day...

STR, thank you so much for finding and posting these. These locations have been stuck in my head for 5 years; the stairs from Vesey, and the escalator down from 5 WTC. It's amazing anyone even thought to take a picture of an escalator. And it means so much to me now. Wow.

Dec 1, 2006, 4:48 PM
I actually think the escalator in the last couple of pics are from the southeastern corner of 4WTC, and the photo is looking north towards 5WTC.

Why? Because if this was the escalator in 5WTC, it would have had the windows on the left side, and image mirroring can be ruled out as we can read the mall posters.

STR
Dec 1, 2006, 6:52 PM
Nope. All 3 of those pics are from 5 WTC. There were 3 sets of escalators in Building 5. One in the western half of the building, shown above, and two on the east side.

There were two escalators sets in 4WTC. One was in the middle of the building, so no windows. The, in the SE corner of the building, didn't face any other WTC building and had a large staircase along the side, not just the narrow one shown above.

Not true, Aon Center in Chicago is a supertall and has no setbacks, it actually looks erriely like WTC 1+2, but white. However, Aon is about 230 feet shorter than they were, so they were the tallest no setback buildings ever.

Anyhow, I really like this thread, I've looked through the whole thing. Its really surreal to realize that all of that was destroyed and its really interesting the number of random pictures a landmark like WTC generates over its lifetime.

Circa mid/late-1970's (anywhere from 1974-1981).

http://www.starcitymall.com/webcam/wtc/wtc-1974.jpg
I've always been curious what made the sky lobbies' metal stand out and glow from the rest of the structure. From closer-up images and looking over the years, I'm guessing it's because they: 1. used a darker shade of metal; 2. made the lobbies' facade columns thicker in width; and, 3. made the facade columns protrude further from the structure, creating the "negative" effect in sunlight interaction.

i have no idea how this is the first time i've viewed this thread, but it is. a couple things:

1. those windows on the world pictures are fantastic. their photographer should be proud for documenting that. the ones of the bar, especially these (http://public.fotki.com/kostic/world_trade_center/windows_on_the_world-4/windows_on_the_world-1/page5.html), brought back great memories.

2. that picture of the lobby from the 70s is DOPE.

3. STR, did you do this (http://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=231yw3.jpg)? it is far and away the best rendering i've seen of the new WTC. i personally don't like any of it -- i think it's too sterile, the designs (except foster's) are horrible and it really brings down the skyline -- but that particular job is professional and really attractive.

There's just something about the Twin Towers. Don't get me wrong, the new World Trade Center isn't bad, but there's nothing that can replace the Twins, at least not in my eyes. I just regret that I was never able to see them in person. They may not have been the most astounding buildings architecture wise, but they will always have a place in my heart as my favorite buildings.

Just wait a few years, the new WTC will be bigger and better, than anyone will ever know. So as long as the Freedom Tower is enclosed all the way to the top, as opposed to the putrid farce that Liebeskind tried to pull off, the second time around.

It will always hurt that I never saw the Twin Towers up close. I remember seeing a picture of them as a kid for the first time- it was love and recognition at the first sight. Some of you guys said you skateboarded there? I always wanted to get a good sparring partner and a pair of sparring swords, and stage one hell of a duel there in the plaza. Lightsabers such as the ones I've built recently would have been awesome:) Breezing through those magnificent cathedral-like lobbies in a long cloak would have been completely awesome- it would sure stand out from the suits and tourists!
I miss those towers so much that it hurts. And no freedom tower will heal that. I think of the political mess that the rebuilding process was, and it makes my blood boil all over again. No outdoor observation deck? How sad. Nothing beats standing on the roof of a tower, with the wind in your hair.

On another note, I've got a photoshopped version of one of the 2 WTC entrance pics somebody posted- I cut and pasted one of my drawings of that tower in his anthropomorphized form into the image, and my gods it looks lifelike. I might post it later.

Obvious place to start for Windows on the World images (http://public.fotki.com/kostic/world_trade_center/windows_on_the_world-4/).

I get chills sometimes looking at these interior pictures and thinking these are some of the places where a lot of people spent the last moments of their lives. Everything shown in them is gone.

I completely agree with you, looking at the pictures on your link, there's almost a ghostly feel about the pictures, even though this is before that tragic day.

I think the 'fork' type architecture of the base is probably my favourite design addition of any building. Subtle yet visually stunning.
