No superpower. First aim should be to ensure that every one gets enough food, clothes and has a proper house.
Nobel causes sc, but unfortunately that doesn't always work out. Look at the US, too many homeless, hungry and ill-clothed folks about the streets. :(

South City has four 35 storey towers under construction (I think they have all topped out). A close to 1 million sq ft mall is also under construction. Plus there is the school and club house stuff. There is also a proposal for a 15 storey luxury tower. A flyover from the complex to Prince Anwar Shah Road connector (to EM bypass) has been proposed by the developer.

And so the growth continues. The new town will have 1 million in a 35 sq km area? Wow, that's some density.
This is what the government proposed initially:
Rajarhat New Town : Total area: 38.55 sq / km, Flats [apartments] to be constructed: 3 lakh (approx) [3 lakh = 300,000], Water treatment plants to be built: 1, Road network to be built: 700 km
Estimated population 750,000 residents and 250,000 floating population.
So the projected density is pretty high. Not a very happy situation.
The biggest project currently under development is Sukhobrishti complex which will have 20,000 apartments and a projected population of 100,000. The project will be over 150 acres.

Kolkata's biggest festival - Durga Puja was celebrated last week... It is when the unique temporay structures called Pandals (to house the Goddess Durga) are erected all over the city - the artwork is amazing... crowds throng the streets all day and night going from Pandal hopping, eating out catching up with friends and family and having lots of fun.

^ Having worked for many years in the shopping mall arena, those crowds are quite impressive. I did notice that there aren't many people carrying shopping bags, which isn't a great sign for retailers. Hopefully that will change once the initial "touring" of the mall turns to shopping at the mall.

Awesome thread -sorry not to have discovered it sooner.
India is an amazing place. I went to Calcutta ten years ago. All the crumbling Victorian architecture, plus the general chaos, made the city seem like a sort of post-apocalyptic London. I was particularly struck by the church that is identical to St Martin's In the Fields in Trafalgar Square.
Looks like there has been a lot of new development since, most of it quite unattractive. I can't help but be dismayed by all these new shopping malls. They might look like progress, but they aren't... :slob:

Because progress has nothing to do with buying the same globalised crap as everywhere else. Many aspects of Western capitalism should not be emulated - they are a disaster for all concerned. KFC in India... what a shame.

Kolkata is a price sensitive city. So if the prices are "right" and also the products are right, the mall should do okay. I hear one of the stores there is going to sell some 40 imported varieties of cheese. Will that sell? Time will tell.

Most of Kolkata is a maze of lanes, bylanes and narrow alleys like the above. If the city (and most of its residents) had money, they could have painted the houses, cleaned up the lanes and it could have become a charming tourist attraction. But maybe two decades from now.

Interesting. Are there very many Christians there? It's good to see so many smaller cars too. I wish more folks in the US would think about getting smaller vehicles.

Great thread Suncity! I just discovered it as well. I visited the city 3 years ago and it seems to have changed alot since then.
I remember the post office (colonial architecture) in the downtown area was good-looking. Do you have any pics of it?
Looking forward for future updates!

The city has not really changed that much in the past three years. It is the same good old Cal with its mix of poverty and wealth.
Here are some photos of colonial buildings taken by me..

^ What is the white building in the middle of the 2nd pic?
It is the St Andrews Church, completed in 1818 and built on the site of the first Court House (after which the street is named as Old Court House Street). The picture is slightly old. The church does get a regular coat of paint unlike other buildings, but the white colour is difficult to maintain in Kolkata's pollution and humid weather.

Shristi Hotel, an arm of Shristi Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd, has joined hands with global hospitality major Westin Hotels & Resorts, for the 323-key address which hopes to welcome guests by end-2011.
The twin towers of the G+35 hotel, a “bionic structure”, will boast a rooftop helipad. This is the second hotel project with an overseas partner announced in Rajarhat in recent weeks, with Ambuja Realty confirming the Swissôtel Group as its hospitality partner for the five-star mall hotel atop City Centre 2.
The Shristi-Westin alliance on the eight-acre land parcel would be the first standalone deluxe five-star hotel in a Rajarhat.
Designed by the Spanish firm of Cervera & Pioz, which created the New York Stock Exchange and the Acropolis Museum in Greece, the star address is banking on “building with the bear and running with the bull”, says an industry veteran.

The urban development department has approached police for help in setting up a parking lot next to Salt Lake City Centre in the face of opposition from residents.
Residents are opposed to the project as it would come up on a park in Block DC.
“We have written to the superintendent of North 24-Parganas police and the additional police superintendent, Salt Lake,” said a senior official of the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority’s (CMDA) planning wing.
A year and a half ago, the urban development department had signed an agreement with Simplex Projects Limited for constructing a multi-level parking plaza on a plot adjacent to City Centre.
Pegged at Rs 50 crore — including the cost of land — the project proposed a five-tier building across 62 cottahs where four floors would accommodate around 500 cars and 40 two-wheelers. The rest of the area (15 per cent) would be available for commercial use.
According to the deal, Simplex Projects Limited would undertake the project on a build-operate-transfer basis for 30 years and then hand over the parking lot to the CMDA.
“The deal was signed in March 2008 and construction was supposed to be completed in 18 months. But with residents’ associations protesting against the project, there was hardly any progress,” said a senior CMDA official.
Local residents, including those of The Residency in City Centre, feel the destruction of the picturesque park next to City Centre would be a terrible loss to the locality.
“It is a beautiful park where both young and old residents come in the morning, practise yoga and breathe fresh air. A multi-tier car parking lot would make the area horribly polluted,” pointed out Suranjan Bonerjee, 71, who lives at The Residency.
The company handling the project feels such problems should have been ironed out before the deal was inked. The government has already received nearly 50 per cent of the project cost.
“It’s the government’s responsibility to ensure that we can start work on the project,” said B.K. Duggal of Simplex Projects.
