^^^ HAHA.... EWW!
That thing is the only one I really hate, all the rest are suprisingly decent. Though it would be cool, I'm not sure how some of those designs intend to create a ~600m building that is painted completely tie-dye! Anyone else notice that some of those models are orange and blue and green and so forth? That'd be cool, more power too them if they can figure out how to make it look decent and not fade!

The height is tremendous, but the base is pretty retarded for no reason. The design seems like a throwback to the 60's when architects tried to create the future but instead were so short-sighted that their projects were "dated" before they were even built. I'll pass.

RTKL's design is ok, but really doesn't inspire me with awe... and I think looks kind of clunky and ill-proportioned from the postcard viewpoint.
I am biased, but I'll take this as the winner:
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b276/Pandemonious/perspec1.gif
None of the other designs really start to push the skyscraper in any sort of new direction. The structural expression and continuity, subtleness of the shape of the building, and (even though not easily seen here) the way the large retail base building is integrated with the site/subway/tower all make it stand out for me. This tower is like an engineer's wet dream. I mean, come on... its a Michell's truss applied to a skyscraper!!
I don't know what is taking so long to pick a winner for this competition.

^I don't think so. It will happen, but I really don't know if there is a need for it at the moment. There is so much vacant office space in Lujiazui right now that it seems foolish to go ahead with this project. I imagine it will probably start closer to or after the 2010 Expo. Investors would be wise to see what the office absorption rate is after Shanghai loosens it's reigns on foreign private business ownership. Besides, there is a great rooftop restaurant with insanely cheap prices that sits on the lot. I quite enjoy sipping a $3.00 big bottle of Carlsberg between my friends the Jin Mao and SWFC.
Here's a picture of my uncle doing just that..

I don't think it's the amount of people being born in China dallasbrink, rather the huge amounts of students who now realize they have to get an education and all those students graduating need a good place to work. So companies make new skyscrapers to allow more companies into moving to the country, this gives jobs to people and China gets a stronger economy.
Ronin was making a joke, give him a break.

Oct 13, 2007, 12:24 AM
The main reason that there are so many towers being built on spec in Shanghai is because of 2010. In 2010 it will be legal for foreigners to own their own company without a Chinese partner. Most of these towers are foreign owned. There's no way Chinese developers could afford to construct all of these skyscrapers.
Aleks

^ yes I realize I'm responding to one of the banned...
I agree with this in principle, but China is nowhere near behaving like a "family of hamsters". Its, of course, inevitable that a country with a population so large will continue to grow, but with their population restrictions, their population will inevitably hit a peak, and it probably won't be decades away. Just saying. Maybe its for the best? (even though I don't really believe in population control)
However, I have to admit that I'm jealous of the amount of building going on in shanghai and beijing, even with all the building going on in chicago. Do they need any of these proposals to be built? who knows. Would a winning bid being built be amazing? absolutely. like I said, I'm jealous of a lot of the designs in there.
Now, I don't want it to seem like I'm trolling or anything, but no how many amazing things shanghai could potentially build, I'll never get over how bad the oriental pearl is. But I'm sure that building has had to have been beaten so many times that mentioning it negatively is automatically trolling.

The main reason that there are so many towers being built on spec in Shanghai is because of 2010. In 2010 it will be legal for foreigners to own their own company without a Chinese partner. Most of these towers are foreign owned. There's no way Chinese developers could afford to construct all of these skyscrapers.
You mean Chinese Mainland companies? You should explore about mega developments being planned in Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shenyang or Chongqing. So many of them are run by Mainland groups like Shimao, Excellence, Moi, R&F, Yingli and The Regent among others. All of these companies are developing supertalls somewhere in China.
Of course many big projects in China are being developed my non Mainland groups, usually from Hong Kong and Taiwan, and many others by companies owned by ethnic Chinese from Singapore, Philippines, etc. Not too many by Japanese or Western developers though. The thing is that Chinese developers have a lot of money to build huge projects :D
Anyway, I don't think 2010 is boosting projects in Shanghai. On the contrary, Shanghai has become a rather second tier city about developing projects. Shanghai is getting its third supertall while so many cities in China are planning more than four.

Big difference in GETTING a new supertall and PLANNING a supertall. ;)

Also a difference between a developed city and a developing. Shanghai MUST grow upward, there is no othere space avail. Unlike othere cities that have many supertalls planned, Shanghai needs the vertical space, while others are just doing it because they can.

Right. Can a mod please lock this thread and open the one in the supertalls construction section?

Not without me posting in it one last time!

What thread? Also, this not only doesn't seem to be U/C.. site prep at best. A final design has not even been chosen, no?
This doesn't belong in Construction section.

It's down to 4 or even 2 proposals at the moment. The S.O.M. proposal has been eliminated.

^Lame. I guess it was too cool, and the structural system too revolutionary for Shanghai (or the builder cares a lot more about making a buck than making good architecture/engineering). With SOM's loss here in Shanghai (the first run), and in San Fran and Shenzhen this year, it will still be some time before the world will get a built tower utilizing a 3 dimensional non-planar (or planar for that matter) michell's truss for lateral load resistance...
I guess as long as that ugly as sin pagoda hybrid thing isn't still in it, there is still hope...
What proposals are still in the running then?
I wish I could see more than just the renders of the other towers, since that really doesn't give the whole picture of the building. I am curious to the sections and structural systems for some of the towers (By code in Shanghai due to high seismic activity and super typhoons, supertall towers need two lateral load systems (composite core can count as one)). Some of the proposals I find quite unattractive, and even downright ugly, but maybe they have something cool going on that isn't visible...
I was quite suprised that not a single one of the proposals (at least that I saw) tried to employ a super-mega frame system (Think Dynamic Intelligent Building or Al Burj (I assume) structural concepts), given the really tall height and enormous site to work with.

I love the SOM design. It's a sjame it was eliminated, it was the best one.

I don't know, but rumours basically say that construction is due mid-2008 and that the estimated construction time is seven years. Hopefully that means it's something very special we're waiting for...

Reminds me of the Russia Tower. I have to say, alot of those models are ugly:yuck:

Currently it is confidential, but I will say that it will easily be China's tallest.

Is it true that if you look at Shanghai from the sky, that it looks like a dragon swallowing a marble?

I wasn't informed of the exact height, but it could be.
