i do believe shanghai will continue to build skyscrapers, maybe not as tall (or no supertalls at all for the next years) but on the other hand many of them. if you take a look at the CTBUH's website you will see that shanghai is just after NY in terms of 200m+ skyscrapers. Of course. It's a city of 20 million with limited space in the city centre, so the only way to build is up.

care to elaborate? what's the prognosis for shanghai's population in 2020? i have a chinese colleague at the university (he's from shanghai) who says that the city has already reached the 25 mill. mark! sorry for going OT.

muppet
Sep 7, 2010, 12:18 PM
oh its not 40-60 million by 2020, but whenever people stop migrating en mase to the city, maybe 2040?. Even with Shanghai's growth rates I dont think it would be feasible to have that many people move in in a decade.

Either that or its an estimate if the city joins up with the Suzhou-Changzhou-Wuxi or Hangzhou etc conurbations (for example an extra million people might settle onto a bridging settlement there - thus the cities conjoin and the population effectively doubles into one.

The odds of this not happening is like .00001%. Shanghai is like what? 50 miles from Wuxi? Its going to be very hard for a city with a population of 5 million not to join up with a city of 25 million when they are only 50 miles apart. Then you consider that you have Suzhou like smack dab in between then throwing another 6 million in the mix. Frankly I am shocked that there is any agricultural land between any of these cities. Especially once the populations of these cities begin to suburbanize a little bit. I doubt it will ever be suburbanization on the scale of the US, they just don't have the space, but I'm sure the richest of the rich will want to spread out a bit effectively linking the two metros.

check ssc, there's ALOT going up, but also alot not even covered. There are some plots in Pudong that even there no forumer knows what's going up, let alone Puxi which is several times as large and as dense. Skyscrapers below 200m and highrises are countless - the authorities build something like the equivalent of Manhattan every year alone in highrise floorspace, in order to house the population explosion (thousands of newcomers each day), it's a huge headache for them.

The progress on this one is definitely impressive. And while I totally welcome this amazing building, and I'll have a front row seat from my bedroom to watch it rise, it's going to ruin my view of the SWFC which bums me out.

If you look closely, you can see part of the red crane poking out from the side of the cluster of four similar-looking apartment buildings (most expensive in China). It'll block 2/3 of my SWFC view.

40 million in a decade or two means the entire metropolitan region, right?

the authorities build something like the equivalent of Manhattan every year alone in highrise floorspace,

Question: What do they consider "highrises"? 12, 20, or 30 floors?

muppet

^entire metro region is currently at 80-140 million depending on where you stop counting.

I think highrise is 18 floors or over according to the Shanghai Planning Bureau.

It's a crown with a function (wind turbines); crowns are far better than simple spires which are nothing more than a height cheat imo....unless they are integrated well into the overall design of the building like the Empire State Building or Two Prudential Plaza in Chicago.

IIRC, at least part, if not all of the funding for this tower came from the Chinese government's economic stimulus package. No idea about tenants, but I think at least part of it will be a hotel.

Reinforced concrete and steel, but not with the "moment frame" method like on 1WTC(the core will rise faster on this building, as opposed to it lagging several stories below the floors).

Shanghai isn't surpassing Dubai with the tallest, especially not with Shanghai Tower. ST is 2,073, while Burj is 2,717. I'm half and half about Jeddah Tower.

This tower finds elegance where towers like 1WTC and SWFC have gained it. It will look beautiful even if its not the tallest, which is why developers don't try to bump up the height.

how do you know? unless we have measurements we couldn't know (unless someone has been both towers at the ground level stage). Engineer's could in-fact have made the core thicker. The floorplates of this tower are much bigger than 1WTC, plus these skyscrapers are designed with safety in mind. The Shanghai WFC's architects/engineers added the giant crossbeams to the core after 9/11, I don't see why they wouldn't design something much safer for this tower.

Damn, this is another one of those "I can't believe they're starting to build this."

how do you know? unless we have measurements we couldn't know (unless someone has been both towers at the ground level stage). Engineer's could in-fact have made the core thicker. The floorplates of this tower are much bigger than 1WTC, plus these skyscrapers are designed with safety in mind. The Shanghai WFC's architects/engineers added the giant crossbeams to the core after 9/11, I don't see why they wouldn't design something much safer for this tower

i dont though by judging the scale of the core as opposed to the size of the cars and concrete trucks it doesnt look as large as 1 WTC.

Why have floor heights become so tall? This tower averages 16.195 feet counting the unoccupied crown. Even without the crown, they seem to be at least 14 to 15 feet. This doesn't seem to be economical. Just to make it tall?

i think direct economics of skyscrapers have been set aside now days contractors and such get kinda pushed and encouraged to do it because the city will certantly regain it all in tourism and such.

and in China and Hong Kong especially they have to do it because of insane population number and very little space.

and Shanghai really wants to prove its economic strength against Hong Kong and Singapore who have been big players in the game of trade and shipping much longer.

Modern office buildings require lots of utilities, which take up some space on each floor. In addition, high ceilings reduce lighting needs by allowing daylight to penetrate farther into the building.

^I'd say 13.5-15 foot ceilings are the norm these days, unless it's residential or hotel, where 10-12 feet are still common. This is why the Khalifa Tower has 162 floors, even though the occupied section is about as tall as the occupied 128 floors of this building. Its hotel/residential floors are 11 feet high (roughly, it's obviously metric over there).

The core alone is as large as the entire footprint of the Jin Mao Tower on the other side of the street!

This tower is rising incredibly fast. Shanghai proves once again that its quickly becoming a world leader in terms of skyscrapers.

well makes sense to me, im a carpenter in this industry, trust me, 14 to 15 ft is reasonable, gives more light etc, better atmosphere, gotta count for slab thickness, which has to be quite thick, count for mechanical, plumbing, electrical, t-bar, ceiling, backing etc, fire rated walls all sorts

Oh wow, I didnt even know it was above ground yet, thats pretty awesome. This is going to be the most amazing tower in the world when completed. Its a hell of a lot sexier than Burj Khalifa and Abraij Al Bait.

Am I correct that Gensler SF designed this tower? If so, within this amazing supertall cluster, we now have one Chicago-designed tower (Jin Mao), one NY-designed tower (WFC), and one SF-designed tower (Shanghai Tower)!
