Wow, amazing, they haven't even gone halfway on SWFC and are already choosing designs for an even taller tower. Great for Shanghai, can't wait to see the work start on this one.
For the most part, these are some sleek designs, and being the selfish bastard that I am, I'll root for the home team of SOM, even though its design is not the best, just so I may get a chance to work on it next summer or something.
And I wonder if this tower will have an obs deck; if so, it will make the one on top of SWFC pretty obsolete.

Yes, same building just a different angle. In that night shot you can really see how each line of structure follows the path of least resistance creating the curves that gradually all converge together into the ground along the three corner mega columns, visually displaying how the building physically handles the lateral forces of the wind... redirecting it all into the foundation at the most efficient points. The idea of it is inspired by Michell's truss theorem (1904), which analyzes stress value ranges in truss members in comparison with the total weight (and therefore cost) of the structure. Structural optimization then becomes just another thing to add to the list of sustainable features this tower has.

The developer bought the rights to develop the land from a previous developer that had SOM produce them a tower (The old version is still floating around the internet somewhere). They decided to hold a large international competition for a new design.
The building is mostly office, with a hotel at the top, so it isn't as if there would be any condos to sell. With this being such a huge well known competition and prime site, I would say the chances of it being built are very high.
The SOM or KPF design. The rest range from crap to great. Foster's design is unremarkable, IMO.

That is likely a massing model based on the ancient Daewoo Financial Center design, which was significantly shorter. The height for this new competition was proposed as 580m occupiable, allowing a crown/spire to reach taller.
I can't see how people really like Foster's design from that one image. It appears to be just a big boring prism thing..? Nothing original. KPF's while not bad, reminds me too much of a love child between the Complex Federation Tower in Moscow and the old Freedom Tower design. But, whatever.. to each his own..
In reality, we have all seen maybe one rendering of most of the towers. There is more to every proposal than one image I am sure. I suggest you all give the elevation-esque rendering of the SOM design I posted further down page one to show what I mean.

After observing all those designs carefully, I agree. The SOM design is the best. The shape is simple and symetrical and beautiful, not some crazy, out-of-this-world geometry. The beatiful external bracing is going a give this tower a timeless touch and make it an instant landmark.
Some of the other designs look wonderful too, but they seem to be too ahead of our time. They look like they belong to StarWars and the geometry doesn't look like they're "build-able". The rest range from average to down right ugly.

^I don't see the similarity to the Russia Tower, aside from the height. The shape of the building, structural system, and tapering are all quite different. The Russia Tower is shaped more like a tapering Lake Point Tower, but with right angles instead of curves in plan. The structural system for the SOM design is based on a bulging curvilinear Michell's Truss, not just a straight up linear diagrid system.
The KPF design is a hell of a lot like the Complex Federation tower, but moreso from seeing the model of the KPF design on page 1 of the thread.... it even appears to have some sort of separate thin cylindrical core attached to the building. The KPF design is ok, it just isn't doing it for me.
Foster's design is very reminiscent of his design for Russia almost crossed with his unbuilt Tokyo tower. The model is also on page 1.. I hadnt seen the model pictures before.

I don't see Shanghai beating out HK, Chicago, or NYC just yet.

Nice, I can't believe how fast that CBD is changing with all these projects.

Well I like Shaghai more than NYC and Chicago because the skyline seems to be more alive than NYC's and Chicago's, only my opinion tho...

I think Dubai will have the best skyline in 2010 because they are building 10+ supertalls and 1 gigantic tower.
Anyway, I still like the KPF design but the SOM one is growing on me.

From that rendering and other pics ive seen, it looks like there is quite a bit of empty space for development. is it possible that there could be 2 winners for this?

What project are these two towers? They look good with the WFC and the proposed Shanghai Center. (start new thread maybe)

wait, they have a world finance centre -and- and international financial centre?
Beautiful buildings, all of them, but I think they need to hire a advertising firm or something to come up with some new names :P

^^
Seems like every city needs a WFC, IFC, ICC etc. nowadays. Just look at Hong Kong. :)
Generally, though, I quite like the building names in Shanghai - but there are of course some really bad ones.
