What are you recycling jokes about the Flames from a few years back, and changing the name to the Oilers??? LOL!!

Someone e-mailed it to me and i thought i should post it here. I never miss a chance to take a shot at the Oilers.

how could anyone, even a Torontonian, cheer for the Leafs?

i mean i could cheer for the Oilers if they were playing Colorado (or anyone in a tight chase for the Flames playoff hopes), but i would have to be serious drunk in order to do so. but the Leafs? even if Colorado was to play the Leafs tomorrow, i would have to cheer for the Av's.

anyone remember that old cartoon "The Sweater" about the kid who got the Leafs sweater in the middle of Hab's land? yeah...

All right, i did not choose my words correctly. I should have said that I was hoping that the Canes would lose on Tuesday. Coincidence, they were playing against the leafs. Don't worry, it's not like I was ACTUALLY watching the game and cheering for the "elves" (leafs)...i had better things to do(like Watch the habs beat up on Jagr and his Rangers!!) ;)

how could anyone, even a Torontonian, cheer for the Leafs?

Because of comments like this. Even when I lived in Toronto, having emigrated from the US and knowing zero about hockey, I could take or leave the Leafs, but it's really been comments on SSP that have pushed me into fandom. My teams are the Flames and the Leafs, and that's because I live in Calgary and reading the irrational hatred of mostly Habs' fans has made me love the Leafs and absolutely despise the Habs.

So, go Leafs.

MolsonExport

Quite frankly, that is a really silly reason to loathe a team.

I feel that way about the Canucks... don't really care either way. The Flames annoy me somewhat (I thinks it's the pet names like "iggy" and "kipper"). I've got no real problem with the Oilers. Whenever Montreal loses I get a little happy inside. And the Senators are a bunch of p*ssies!!

See, now I was raised that Edmonton Oilers are the direct spawn of Lucifer and the prositute on the corner (that may sound funny, but that's how my dad explained it). As a Flames fan, they are the enemy.

Since I was also taught to respect champions, the Montreal Canadiens were automatically cheered for, and the Toronto Maple Leafs were hated.

As for the Canucks, I think all of Canada thinks the same as you. They're alright, but they knocked the Flames out of the playoffs a few times, so I'm not a fan.

I like the way the Sens have turned around, they're a great team that will win a Cup sooner then the Oilers, Leafs, or Canucks will (I personally give the Sens three seasons).

And Go Flames Go! Where was this team at the start of the year? We'd've made first in the West.

This ended during the late sixties and early seventies when the league expanded and the Leafs stopped winning cups. Now, to put it simply or as the saying goes, everybody hates the Leafs.

Canadiens great Beliveau honored in Montreal

Associated Press

MONTREAL -- Many former NHL greats and Prime Minister Stephen Harper turned out Thursday night to honor legendary Montreal Canadiens captain Jean Beliveau.

The Bell Centre was transformed into a giant dining hall filled with tuxedo-clad hockey stars, politicians past and present and many members of the business community to pay tribute to the 75-year-old Beliveau.

"It's hard to have the right words to describe it," Beliveau said before the event. "I've been retired from hockey for 35 or 36 years and I'm always amazed to have so many invitations and having nights like this."

Former Detroit Red Wing Gordie Howe, ex-Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Johnny Bower, former New York Ranger Rod Gilbert and former Leafs and Wings star Red Kelly, as well as dozens of former Montreal Canadiens were on hand.

Beliveau retired after the Canadiens won the 1971 Stanley Cup. For 18 seasons, he had been one of the NHL's most dominant players, suiting up for 10 Stanley Cup championship teams.

The tall center scored 507 goals and had 1,219 points, but was known as much for his natural leadership and gracious personality as for his hockey exploits.

After his retirement, Beliveau worked in the Canadiens front office for years, but always had time for charity work, particularly for children's causes.

Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press

I heard that to be able to attend this event, you had to reserve a table and each Table started at 25,000$

They raised 1 million $ for 5 different childrens hospitals across the province!

Congrats to Le Gros Bill!

Naslund's glove was between Kiprusoff's blocker and the post - it was Naslund's hand that directed the puck into the net, not Kiprusoff's. Lame goal. Not to mention the obvious goalie interference on the same play.

Phoenix did better than us? What the hell is with that?

And Edmonton just got whipped :whip: lol: :haha:.

EDIT: And what's up with T.O.? Last time I checked they weren't doing too well.

that's probably because there are more players from Ontario than any other reagion in the NHL!

trust me, had the Oilers or the Flames been the best team in the western conference, they would have gotten more votes from the Players!

I thought that there were more players form Quebec? Anyways, even if I was from Ontario, the Habs would be a more attractive team to play for, there is still some respect for Montreal (at least where I hang out)...

Who would pass up the chance to live in SoCal or NorCal for that matter?

Edmonton will never be able to keep star players. Period. Nobody wants to do the long travel thing, and players who havent spent much time here think its a wasteland with no summer or anything to do. E-town can sign Alberta boys, and maybe the odd European, but forget about the big names ever calling Edmonton home again. Especially after Peca/Pronger/Spacek/Samsonov couldnt get out of town fast enough.

actually, i'm surprised Toronto made it to #1. i mean you would think that players would want to play for a team that stands a chance of winning the cup sometime before now and the second comming

Like it or not Toronto and New York players have "god-like" status among their fans. Toronto perhaps more-so than New York. And many players probably don't want to have to deal with French.

Speaking of TO/MTL.

They both won tonight.

I'm hoping for a loss or OTL tomorrow for Montreal and a Win for TO.

That'll make Saturday's game one AMAZING showdown... If TO is one point up on MTL or they are both even, then the playoffs could depend on a shootout. IF TO is down a point they have to win in Regulation. Even though I'm hoping for Montreal to make it in, I wanna see a nail-biter.

but its like that in ALL Canadian markets. i mean Jarome Iginla is Mayor of Calgary. Lanny McDonald is our lord supreme. the list goes on

i could understand that aspect of an NHL player wanting the status of being a Maple Leaf, but i can't understand why they would want to go there without chance of winning a cup.

Yeah, LA and San Jose are what everybody thinks when they hear "paradise."

It might amaze you to hear this, but most NHL players are Canadian, and most Canadians don't want to live in Jesusland, even if it's the California side.

Not to mention the fact that both places, regardless of their team's stature, are complete backwaters when it comes to any sort of hockey "culture."

Which is most likely to get you laid in the respective towns:
"I play for the LA Kings... they're a hockey team... You know, like Wayne Gretzky... "
"Hi" (this is Edmonton, like everyone doesn't know who you are already.....)
"I play for the Leafs"
