Helsinki is a pleasant and well ordered place, certainly one of the best cities in that sense (when it comer to cleanliness, public safety, transport etc.)

Btw, The Dear Leader, didn't this cause you a heart attack? These flags are so scary, aren't they? ;)

Helsinki looks like a Russian city...I like it:)

These Russian style buildings were built during the period while Finland was part of the Russian Empire. Some of them remained until these days and are (I suppose) a historic and architectural heritage. This is, however, the only similarity Helsinki has got with Russian cities... fortunutely or unfortunately

Your photos have a very professional touch. The places are stereotypically touristy Helsinki, but that's understandable. :) (Please tell me you ventured outside Senate Square, Esplanade park and railway station area!) I especially liked the photos that showed detaills (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k217/Aviller71/helsinki27.jpg my favourite), or ones that presented buildings them with strong geographical lines. October is awful time to be in the city, though.

I myself really hate the area around the Senate Square and the harbour. It may have some coherent Empire architecture, but it's so lifeless and dull. Once the tourism season ends, there's no one there for a simple reason: there's nothing to do. The real soul of Helsinki is in the districts of Kamppi and Punavuori with their Jugend/Art Nouveau buildings, clubs and places of interest, the cafes of the 1920s district Töölö, or central streets of Kluuvi. When I think of stereotypical streets of Helsinki, they look like this (http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/8334/stadia36eb.jpg) or this (http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/3224/kantakaupunkia2cw.jpg) in my mind. I don't mind Empire, especially not in larger buildings such as the ones you can find in St. Petersburg or the main building of University of Helsinki, for example, but it's a crime that they been made into places where mainly tourists only go. There are some plans to revitalize them, but I wouldn't hold my breath - cities of the country still have to fully more adapt "European street life culture", especially outside summer. Focusing on sprawling concrete suburbs in the forests isn't helping a lot.

Of course I did. :D Went to the southern tip of the island (where that park is...I think a couple of pics from that area are in the thread as well) and wandered thru some other areas w/o my camera. I'll post some additional pics tomorrow afternoon.

No offense to Helsinki or any Finnish forumers, but the pictures look like a 'rent-a-euro-city'

Those are really nice pictures, but they're really just from the most central part of Helsinki - the same area they like to show the tourists. But that's just a really small part of Helsinki, which spans over 10 kilometers across.

Here's a few pics from the East-Helsinki, even though still just a small section of the city, it's Helsinki as I see it:

This is Cirrus, the tallest residential building in Finland at almost 100m tall. It doesn't appear to be that tall though =/
It looks 60m max...
