I took this earlier in the week and it captures the peculiar low white autumnal light we get this time of year. For the uninitiated, Vancouver is located on Canada's West Coast in a temperate coastal rainforest climate. Because of this it is lush and green throughout the year and it rains or is overcast for a large portion of the winter months. As we move into this "rainy season" part of the year the light changes dramatically. It is often overcast or raining for much of the day but there are small windows of time around dusk when the sun falls below the level of the clouds and strikes the city horizontally with an intensely white light. I've tried to photograph this before without success but I feel I got it this time.

SFUVancouver: Wow, beautiful photo!

Thanks for the compliment. I'm pretty pleased with it. It was a spur of the moment shot too. I was running late for work, hopped off the bus on my way in to Granville Island and suddenly I saw this view. Out came the camera for a quick snap and then I was on the run again. I didn't even look at it until later in the week.

Am I ever glad I put my money into a good camera with an optical image stabilizer that actually works. Almost all of my photos are quick hand held snapshots taken without a tripod. I have one and I use it for actual photography outtings but I like always having my camera with me just in case.

I took another shot that same day. This time it is of the tops of several Yaletown towers that were suddenly bathed in gold when the light changed from white to gold. The two photos were taken about five minutes apart from each other and yet the light changed that much in matter of minutes. I'm taking the photo from behind Ocean Concrete on Granville Island.

I took these in the midst of a breathtaking, sudden fall sunset today and the light faded moments after I snapped the last photo. In order to start taking photos before I lost the light I ran from the bus stop, past the sales centre for the Olympic Village where I saw people camping out in line in order to buy the condos and townhouses and they don’t even go on sale for five more days.

Your neighbourhood is gorgeous Canasian, and I love the rolling hills in the distance!

We had a hurricane or tropical storm last night here in Halifax. My friend woke up to a loud noise at 4:00am, and saw that the wall on his apartment building had collapsed. (He's on the second floor, behind the brick part).

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l217/halps00/quingatenf2.jpg

My power was out for quite a bit, and a branch out front snapped off a tree. I walked downtown for a bit earlier, and there were lots of businesses (and the main library) still without electricity.

Right beside the body piercing place! That must be a wonderful neighbourhood!

It is actually only blocks from some of the priciest homes in Calgary. 16th Ave and 10th St NW is blocks from Kensingtion, Crescent Heights, Rosedale, SAIT, etc. 16th Ave itself sucks because it is the TransCanada. Interestingly enough that liquor store was robbed just a couple years ago, and if I'm not mistaken the clerk was stabbed. I could be making up the stabbing part though.

^^^^ thanks for amazing shot Delirium.

North York looks massive and this is only Finch south to the 401 (there's lots growing from Finch north to Steeles). There's more than 70 tall buildings in the North York portion of the shot. Is North York potentially the 5th biggest skyline iin the country??

What is really astonishing from this POV, is the compression of downtown. Check out what 5 miles (7 kilometers) looks like in this shot (see below).

Check out the yellow highlighted tower ... Minto's Quantum 2 (54 storeys - 525 feet) nearing completion at Yonge and Eglinton. Does look like much!

Impressive. How fast is North York growing?

Maldive
Nov 27, 2007, 1:49 AM
ummm... very fast?

Bear in mind the Sheppard subway is encouraging a rather amazing growth spurt east of this shot which includes the built (ugly-ish) NY towers and others, and a little suburban project by your favourite Hong Kong triad developer (Concord Adex/Pacific whatever) to the tune of 20 towers and $2 Billion+ .... not bad for a suburb.

To be more specific, how many towers u/c or recently completed?

and a little suburban project by your favourite Hong Kong triad developer (Concord Adex/Pacific whatever) to the tune of 20 towers and $2 Billion+ .... not bad for a suburb.

Favourite? I don't know about that. Anyway hopefully the quality of their suburban developments are at least up to par with their suburban ones. They are starting to venture into Vancouver suburbs as well, albeit on a much smaller scale.

Actually I meant "your" like the royal "we" or "our"... not your personal favourite. I wouldn't give you that rep.

As for u/c and recently completed projects in North York... unfortunately I haven't a clue. We'll have to track down a North Yorker to get some numbers.

Not even that far, how about Northern California or Oregon even. I can understand the appeal of being in Calgary now ($$$) but what was the reason 100 years ago? And don't say free farm land. I would rather eat a hollowpoint than bust my ass on a farm and live in a sod fucking house.

I haven't seen those "downtown" poles with the lighting across the street.. when did they put those up?

caltrane74
Nov 29, 2007, 5:31 PM
The lighting across the street is for Christmas, that went up about 2 weeks ago.

The "downtown yonge" poles went up about 1 to a year and a half ago. The poles in the foreground however went up this spring...

They should have lights strung out like that year round. It gives Yonge a very "Hong Kong look."

I like this subdivision better than most of the bleak and bland new areas.
