What a load of rubbish. We all know the real reason for Toronto's rise has to do with the Leafs. Who could resist moving to a city where you could see both Lanny McDonald and Darryl Sittler on a regular basis? I know my parents couldn't. I see something similar happening today with Antropov and Sundin. Expect a surge in Toronto's population any time now.

LOL!!

I fail to see how that's possible, since it was nearly a decade after the Leafs won their last Stanley Cup. ;) :haha:

One of the best things Ralph Klein's government ever did was to privatize liquor retailing in Alberta. There are many independant retailers, and small chains, as well as the supermarket chains like Safeway, Calgary Co-op, Superstore, Sobey's, and now Costco. We only have 3 Costco stores, and the new northwest store is the first one with a liquor store. I went in and checked it out, it was small and basic. The selection wasn't great, but the prices were good and all the bottles were big.

Sobey's has been expanding in Calgary with new supermarkets and stand alone liquor stores.

Because, you know, when you want alcohol, it's poor selection, shitty quality and large quantity that really counts! It is a good thing the privatised it though. The thought of Alberta having as much pull on the industry as the Liquor Control Board of Ontario frightens me, especially considering their poor standards. *shudder*

It is nicer! Their mall is bigger than ours, their hospital is bigger than ours, their downtown is bigger than ours, the music scene is better and their summer sare hotter, more humid and smoggy! They also don't have our litter and homeless people problem. :)

Thunder Bay could learn a lot from North Bay.

http://www.pbase.com/mucker/image/68361111.jpg

This was taken over a year ago but it gives you an idea of what the area is like. Strictly speaking, the area in the picture I took is the North Common. It is just used as a sports field and sometimes for outdoor events.

The Public Gardens, shown about midway up the photo on the right side, are more Central-Park-like, although I'd imagine you could fit about 15 of them into the footprint of Central Park in Manhattan. Spring Garden Road runs along the left (South) side of the gardens:

The new Brown Street Overpass. For only 600,000$, you, too, can con a national rail service into building bridges for nine dwellings!! Under the agreement with the city, they must provide this bridge permanently for the duration of CP's owning that land for the purpose of having a rail yard there. So, after the old one rotted out, they had no choice but to replace it, even though it isn't really all that necessary anymore. Probably a good place to get pictures of the "skyline", though.

But with a PhD they may look for jobs everywhere in the world, if they can't find it in Winnipeg. If drugs, divorce and gambling are the causes, then I don't see any relation with a PhD. And I don't see a correlation between PhD and lack of social skills...

You are completely full of shit.

There are no people with doctorates "homeless on Main." And even you must know that having a PhD is VERY different from "post secondary education of some sort." "Post secondary" might mean a semester at a trade school. A PhD is the highest degree that a person can receive and entails at least eight years of "post secondary." There are underemployed PhDs to be sure but none of them are homeless any more than are MDs homeless. If there is even ONE PhD on your trashy Main St I would be completely shocked.

This matters to you why?

Why do you insist on picking fights with me?

What that poster from Winnipeg said was worse than absurd. Hence my response. If there is even one "PhD" homeless on Main, I would be shocked. He actually claims that there are many, with not a shred of support.

There used to be a guy that panhandled outside the Loblaws near me in Toronto who had allegedly been my friend's Intellectual Property prof at Osgoode Hall. Of course, that's only York University but he probably still had at least a bachelors degree.

I could imagine a few of my colleagues from grad school ending up on the street. In a few cases there seemed to be psychiatric and addiction "issues", invariably among the "continental philosophy" and "post-structuralist" types. I say this in spite of the fact that I very much wish that my hard-earned Ph.D. would elevate me to the quasi-superman status suggested above.

they put the fire right on the ice? :koko:

The concrete firepits are sitting on the creek bottom, not on top of the ice, if that's what you were asking. There isn't any ice at the bottom of the pits. I also don't think there's any water under the ice in the spots they put the firepits, It's so shallow, it probobly freezes solid through to the ground.

Mckenzie Towne, an exit off the freeway in the far SE of Calgary. The people I know who live here love it, but I think it is too close to the Shepard sewage lagoons and too far from downtown.
I was amazed at how heavy the traffic was through the entire community and the main traffic circle isn't for timid drivers which Calgary has a lot of.

Isn't this the hood? I heard some stuff about North Main being pretty rough.

Close. Further to the WNW is where the fun really begins. North Main is now just kinda the empty grey-zone between the 'hood' and some middle to lower-middle class neighbourhoods (but not particularly "bad" areas)

Selkirk Ave. and McGregor St. is more like what people think of when they think of the North End in Winnipeg.
