Ya but then you would have to live in Montreal.;) Just kidding I love you guys. Seriously though, that house in Calgary is in (relatively) historic Inglewood and is fairly close to downtown. Does seem a tad too expensive though.

Okay, I'll bite..

http://images.mls.ca/listings/reb89/medres/2/v684222_1.jpg
This one? Here, it would get 75,000$ at most. Maybe 100,000$ if it was in good condition and near a downtown.

http://images.mls.ca/listings/reb89/medres/0/v683130_1.jpg
This one looks a bit nicer. I'd say 125,000$ to 150,000$, maybe more if it was near a downtown.

http://images.mls.ca/listings/reb89/medres/3/v682613_1.jpg
If this was near Hillcrest Park, over looking the city, an easy 250,000$ to 325,000$. More if it had a garage in the back or sauna or something, but no more than 400,000$.

http://images.mls.ca/listings/reb89/medres/6/v680336_1.jpg
This one looks like the houses in Sequoia Park, which go for around 100,000$ to 115,000$ depending on condition and amenities. More if it has a garage, less if it doesn't.

Here's a picture taken from the Granville Street bridge in Vancouver a couple days ago:

http://www.pbase.com/image/92051288/original.jpg

I've also been digging through old photos. This is a panorama of the Bedford Basin, North of Halifax, taken last summer:

http://www.pbase.com/halifaxphoto/image/92051329/original.jpg

Similar pano from the same vantage point:
http://www.pbase.com/halifaxphoto/image/92051338/original.jpg

This is what things look like from ground level, although the hill I shot from is not shown (it's off to the left):
http://www.pbase.com/halifaxphoto/image/92051330/original.jpg

http://www.pbase.com/halifaxphoto/image/92051405/original.jpg

The massive Bedford skyline (actually, the original town would be off to the right, and unfortunately I don't have many good pictures):
http://www.pbase.com/halifaxphoto/image/92051331/original.jpg

I had meant to do a bit of a tour of the town itself but didn't get around to it. Bedford has a couple of old residential areas that include a few elaborate houses and some old hotels. There are also a number of modern "mansions". Other highlights include kitschy 30s/40s/50s diners and motels, a giant lobster, etc.

No offense to you or others in this thread who have expressed similar opinions, but I find little value in statements like these. The prices MAY be inflated, but they could also be driven by high demand or difficult building conditions. In other words, it could be an extremely desirable location. You can get a cheaper home in Saskatoon, or Winnipeg, or elsewhere, but then less people want to live in these cities (and I'm saying this objectively, not making a judgement on the worth of those cities) and it is a lot easier to build.

There are also value judgements to make. Sure, you can get a bigger house for less, but less and less people want houses that big, especially as families continue to change in structure. A house could also be smaller but built with higher quality materials or features that make it "greener."

It's not even clear what "inflated" means. The fact is that people will pay $1M in Vancouver for a small house in a sketchy area while nobody will pay that for a similar house in Saskatoon. They are willing to do this because they value the location of the property.

Some parts of the country are just inherently more attractive places to live than others. Vancouver gets high marks because, by Canadian standards, it's a big city with a mild climate and a scenic coastal location. Development controls, etc. add to the price even more (I could see arguing that this could be called "inflation" relative to what the prices would otherwise be).

I personally would much rather live in a small house in Vancouver than in a McMansion in a Saskatoon suburb.

^You're both right but Boris does make a valid point about supply and demand.
Here in Winnipeg our average price has shot up considerably in the past few years. Part of the reason is increased demand and part of the reason is a lack of supply. Until shovels went into the ground for our newest mega-suburb (Waverley West) there were almost no lots left in the Southwest part of the city. In fact, I don't think there were any left at all and this is the highest growth area for the city. Ergo, prices in the Southwest corner have increased dramatically. Now they'll probably stabilize but it does prove the point that Boris was making. Everybody knew that new lots would be coming on line soon but property values shot up anyway.

One bedroom bungalow in need of complete renovation, on a 25 foot lot, no central heat or sewage. Located about five minutes from downtown in one of the poorest neighbourhoods east of Vancouver. 13,500$

In the same neighbourhood, only a couple blocks away, this is described as a "Handyman special"; asking 20,900$. (That's probably how much it was worth in 1950!)

Haha, I know. It's really linear, sparse, and all the buildings look about the same height. It's in dire need of a few signature towers. Right now it doesn't look too different from a cluster of slabs in Bramalea (Toronto suburb).

Vanman, great shots!

I cannot believe how well you managed to capture not one, but two of my favourite environmental phenomena: the sea and sky blurring entirely and those "mariner" blood purple sunsets through clouds. When I saw that sunset from my window the other day I literally stopped mid-step and stood transfixed for a good minute.

Very, very well done. Print and frame those.

Thanks alot. That is the first time I've ever experienced the sky merging with the sea. It felt as though I was walking on the edge of the earth as cheesy as that sounds. As for that sunset: My shitty camera did not do it any justice. It literally looked as though the sky turned to blood at one point.

The Regis Hotel, part of the Bow development. The chain railing looks like a cheesy way of keeping drunks from the Regis from spilling out on to the CTrain tracks.

Macleod Trail southbound at Heritage Drive. We had a little bit of snow today, so all the incompetent drivers were out doing their thing, slowly.

It's clear from this photo that density only leads to traffic problems.
