Nice pics livingforthecity, I wish we could see more Calgary Grit and not just the skyline.

Thanks! What do you mean by grit exactly? I purposely exclude the homeless and graffiti from my pictures. I am not denying their existence in Calgary but I feel it is exploitation of the homeless to take pictures of them just because they are so visible, and most graffiti is tagging not street art.

Here is a picture from the industrial area by the tracks in Inglewood. It looks like the truck got flattened.

We didn't get to that until college, and that was only for the geology majors. You can blame the Harris budget cuts for that.

You have probably wondered what came before Chocolate, and that was Orange.
Orange was built in the east village in the shadow of the backside of city hall.
Unfortunately, the east village has remained an urban wasteland.

I think this little building was used as a show suite for Orange. The condos to the right are the only other attempt to develop in the east village.

Hahaha that's one of the funniest things that I've ever seen on here. That is truly going down in the SSP history books. Other cities show off their "grit" with dirty industrial scenes and homeless people, but Calgary has blow up sex dolls in farm fields. Classic. You really get around in this city. :)

^Oh come on there is a deliberate attempt at creating an advertising square a la Times square or like caltrane pointed out Shinjuku/Shinuba. For me it just looks so contrived and artificial! I think there was a proposal for a similar bastardization of urbanism in downtown M and it was swiftly destroyed. Good.

outsider's perspective on what? pictures? how about you go there in person, then you might have "a real unbiased opinion".

anyways, i've been to times square many times, shinjuku and shibuya. dundas square has its own T.O feel. you can't get that from pictures, buddy

This stretch of Yonge street has been heavily commercialized since before anyone here was born. So yes, it is a deliberate attempt to create an advertising square but not "a la Times square", rather "a la Yonge street". Its simply a natural evolution of what has been here for decades. The only thing new is that they built a square, which is actually something Time Square lacks.

No I haven't but you know what I've learned buddy? Sometime it takes an outsider's perspective to get a real unbiased opinion.

When the outsider is absolutely clueless about the history and context of the area but still choses to make a comment on it, who cares about his opinion?
