And it is the tallest church in Canada. The second tallest is the Anglican cathedral in Toronto.

^^^I wish I had been there to eat at that Bannock Bistro place. I ate a lot of native food growing up in Manitoba, and LOVE bannock, if it is made properly(if it is made properly, it will not freeze outside in the cold). Also pemican is yummy, too! Once when I was young, a neighbour unearthed an old leather pouch of pemican that natives had buried, probably hundreds of years ago. I used to find the odd stone that had been used as the head of a tool.

Unfortunately with all teh old buildings we have in town, it comes with a price.
The about of NIMBY's and activist groups, and heritage groups would probably all gather in front of the building singing "kumbaya" while holding hands.
Believe it or not, there are quite a few people who want to preserve this pile of dog poop!
It is an eyesore

L'Oratoire St-Joseph is on the North-western flank of Mont-Royal, and Downtown is on the opposite side of the Mountain.
I'd say that the easternmost runway at Dorval Airport is about 8-9KM's away from Mont-Royal, and about 11-12 KM's from Downtown(if we calculate it in a straight line) but we all know that if you take highways it is about a 20KM drive from downtown to the Airport!

Here are a few shots of Victoria
The first was taken by "zoomer" on VibrantVictoria.ca. It shows the Inner Harbour as from a floatplane as it prepares to land. It will touch down roughly where the two yellow cranes are along the harbour. The big stretch of land in the middle of the photo is the www.docksidegreen.ca development, and above that (with the roundabout structure on the hill) is the www.bayviewvictoria.ca development.

This photo was also taken by zoomer, again on a float plane this time headed for Vancouver.

Holy crapcan ... I do not like the sounds of snow and -18c. It takes about a week for the cold air to hit us so we can look forward to frosty weather. Correct me if I am wrong, but it was my impression when I was in Calgary many eons ago, that there are not a lot of trees, and the ones that are there are small. I was told it was because of the dramatic shifts in temperature that they simply can't grow very well. Is that true? I remember the countryside around Calgary being kind of tree-less except for tall shrubs and maybe some poplars.
I talked to my sis in Vancouver today and definitely rainy season has begun. Has been raining 1.5 weeks.

There are plenty of trees here. The further out you get, the less there are. Or at least the smaller they are. Further out means younger. Leave the city and there really isn't much to speak of. Mostly grass. But then look where Calgary is built. All the trees here were planted.

Depends where you are in the city... just outside of the southwest, it's forest all the way to the mountains 20 minutes away.
Calgary is pretty tree poor though... I'll never understand why on the south side of the Bow River, dense in trees, they built houses through alot of it... and they leave that hideous eyesore nosehill area empty and call it a park... it should be all houses, and nothing should have been built along the river valley to the south!

I guess that is my question... were there no trees originally because of the swing of the temps? I do remember trees inside the city, but they were not big trees like Edmonton.
But Jay says there are trees in other areas, so that can't be the reason.

The true tree line stretches out of the rockies through the foothills and depending where you are at, ends about 5 kms outside of the foothills... being how close the foothills are to southwest Calgary, the forest is just on the outside of that part of Calgary. The only other heavily forested area of Cowtown is the river valley to the south. Everything else is either planted or small poplar trees.
and yes... the chinooks do kill alot of young trees with freezing to warm weather all winter.
I've argued with many people about living in a new area of town opposed to an older one with mature trees... I live in the house (which in most cases new ones are way nicer than older ones), not the fucking trees outside of it!!!

Living in Kingston right now for school I can tell you that winters here are inhumane. -5 in Kingston feels worse than -20 in Calgary. The damp, windy, disgusting, grey winters that are constant for 5 months are really gross. In Calgary, it is sunny and dry. The temperature can plunge very cold, below -20 but it is usually sunny, and there is always a chinook right around the corner to give you that nice 10-15 degree repreave for stretches at a time. Last christmas when I came home for break I didn't wear a jacket for 3 weeks. Christmas day was 15, a few days later it was 19.
Don't even get me started on the summers.

Uhmmmmm.... I think you will find temperatures in Calgary fall below -20c. In fact, temperatures in Calgary fall below −30°C (-22°F) on about five days per year average.
"But its a dry cold"! ;)

Not sure exactly how well it might compare to the suburban department stores, but it usually is quite busy and seems to be doing ok. It certainly is one of the best buildings in all of Calgary.

@ Mr Black, I was interested in the pix of Old Town in Victoria... do you
have any history or pics of the oldest bldgs there?
There is quite a bit of info on VibrantVictoria.ca's forum on heritage buildings. You'll need to register to access the Heritage section of the forum, but registration takes as long as it takes you to validate your email.
Anyhow, go to www.vibrantvictoria.ca/forum and check out the "heritage" forum for more info on Victoria's older buildings (but you'll need to register to gain access).

LOL! I know. I've just never been too much of a believer in the Dry Cold
theory. -30c and -40c are "inhumanely cold"! At those temps, it is always dry.
If I were to choose between -5c in the East and -20c in the West, I can tell you which I found colder.....

Well yea there is a truth to your statement, in that once air gets too cold it loses its carrying capacity of water, and is incapable of delivering a "wet cold". -20 is -20 everywhere... theres no such thing as a wet -20.
Vancouver winters in the other hand... now theres a wet cold!

You get used to the humidity, though. I was joshin' Josh, but it is more humid here than Winnipeg, but I don't know about Calgary. I imagine it gets humid during Chinooks. We can get to -20c here, but not often. If it does get that low it is only for a day or two. And it is EXTREMELY dry when it gets that cold here. I think once I remember a winter when it was super cold all across Canada, and it got to something like -24c here. I went to Vancouver for a visit that winter and it actually reached -15c there for a short period. That winter was hell!:hell:

What is really interesting is how different the weather in Belleville is from Kingston's...... especially in winter. Although only a 40 minute drive on the 401Kingston is in a completely different weather zone, one that is much cloudier and more humid. Feeling some of those mid-winter blahs....come to Belleville and enjoy the sun!

we do have somting like a dial the bus in the south end of the city
but thats just to check the bus times at your bus stop. you can either talk to a human or a computer your choice. give the stop number and it gives you the next bus's for that stop or you can go to winnipegtransit.ca and check the times there also

Saturday marked the beginning of the annual Cavalcade of Lights in Toronto. The lighting display at City Hall's Nathan Philips Square has been a Christmas tradition for the past 40 years. Here are some pix I took of the lights last night. City Hall was unfortunately not lit up blue, but the Old City Hall display was interesting:
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/5449/nov2606cavalcadeoflightie4.jpg
The Projection show on Old City Hall is called "Immersion", and is by an artist from France, Xavier de Richemont. The inspiration for it is Canada's natural abundance of water. The colours were usually like this, in between shows:
http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/7048/nov2606cavalcadeoflightxc6.jpg
http://img326.imageshack.us/img326/1336/nov2606cavalcadeoflightza8.jpg
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4084/nov2606cavalcadeoflightva1.jpg
and the 50 foot tree, lit up by 10,000 blue and white LED lights, and 100 strobes:
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/4996/nov2606cavalcadeoflightqu2.jpg
Naturally, it is not possible to capture the projection show without a video camera, but here are a few different shots taken during the show. First the city hall is covered with ice:
http://img450.imageshack.us/img450/3199/nov2606cavalcadeoflightpc8.jpg
The ice starts to show cracks:
http://img450.imageshack.us/img450/4654/nov2606cavalcadeoflightdp3.jpg
as they melt, great chunks of ice start to fall off:
http://img450.imageshack.us/img450/5263/nov2606cavalcadeoflightgx8.jpg
Completely melted, the water swirls over the building:
http://img450.imageshack.us/img450/8316/nov2606cavalcadeoflightnw1.jpg
and voila! The end:
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/7507/nov2606cavalcadeoflightwr3.jpg
and finally a couple of pictures taken the night before, from behind City Hall:

its the roads that are a problem. they only clear the main roads. the side roads are not cleared and they are pretty bad. Crossing them today i almost fell a couple times as they are just ice.
there is a street a block from where i work - it is one of many - dozens - of streets that are shut down to traffic because they are not safe to travel on.
the one a block away is a steep hill that they cannot get equipment on to clear or even salt. so its just a sheet of ice basically all the way down.
as someone who never grew up here i used to laugh at the pics on the news but when you live down here it is quite different - the city is just not built to deal with cold or snow well at all
right now its snowing pretty heavy and people are asking to leave early - it will probably take them a good 2 or 3 hours to get home. traffic looks bad.
