Have you ever noticed the tiny 2 storey Venini building squeezed in between Lancaster and TD Square?

I don't get what the lines are for on the new sidewalks. Is it for traction or something?

SFUVancouver
Mar 13, 2008, 7:15 PM
Apparently they are tactile cues to help the visually impaired who use white canes. The straight lines in the dip of the curb aim straight across the street to the opposite curb. The lines around those lines help identify the width of the curb dip. Now I have not idea if they actually work but I do recall reading that Vancouver receives high marks for its accessibility to those with physical and visual impairments. Many intersections also have audible "chirping" cues when the light changes and thick white paint to define the edges of the cross walk. Plus it is illegal to proceed through an intersection while a pedestrian is crossing and that helps if a person takes longer to cross or goes somewhat astray. At least they don't have to worry too much about jackasses driving between them and the curb while they are still crossing.

For the visually impaired Canada and North America in general is abysmal. Go to a Japanese city, or many other more affluent Asian cities and you'll see sidewalk braille on practically every single street. It is unbelievable.

The brown soviet looking building on the right is Montreal's central station. Yes at a time where the M was the HQ of all train companies this was the grand central station! The ugly stone building on the left is a parking garage, its actually where the Central station sign is on which doesn't give a very nice impression.

Victoria is a cool city. I'm thankful I live here. Though sometimes I wish it was a bit bigger! :D

As for Montreal, it's in my main list of cities I want to visit one day! I also want to go see a Hab's game too. My mom and sister just came back from Quebec City. She has some really cool photos. Especially of the Ice Pallace!

The Canadian Bank of Commerce on Victoria Avenue was gutted by fire in February, 2007. It was bought by a local architectural firm which had the burnt out part removed and only the façade remains. This is the result.

^^All the smaller cities have nice banks.

Brantford's old CIBC for example:

This other old building in Brantford is for adults only. It might be an old bank:

"Buildings like this" how? More Beaux-Arts Classicism architecture; more aesthetically pleasing older buildings; or more burnt out ruins?

We have a decent amount of the first two but not much of the last.

Here is one that people have always found interesting, and will be gone soon:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/76/199154221_c5eb688fa1_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/scienceduck/199154221)
By scienceduck (http://www.flickr.com/photos/scienceduck/)

What's left of Saskatchewan Pool 6 on the John Street Headland. I think it goes underground?

http://ontarioarchitecture.com/ has a good amount of pictures of buildings in Ontario. Thunder Bay is second only to Toronto in the number of architectural examples on that site. :) (And in the book; Toronto has maybe 3 or 4 more examples than Thunder Bay, and no other city comes close to as many examples.)

That money mart is explained on this page (http://ontarioarchitecture.com/artdeco.htm).

:previous: Is that really Hamilton, or the forest moon of Endor?

Since Hamilton was so heavily industrialized early on, there was a major effort to create public parks. Thousands of acres were designated as conservation areas and the Royal Botanical Gardens were created. Matt602's shot is taken from the Spencer Gorge Conservation area and overlooks Cootes Paradise, which is owned by the Royal Botanical Gardens.

^ Interesting, this picture is very similar to Toronto viewed from the West... the cluster of tall financial district towers, with the rest of downtown extending to the left with a huge bunch of shorter skyscrapers.

The big cranes are for Concordia's John Molson School of Business. Our tallest U/C is on the opposite (northeast) side of downtown, and its crane is also visible.

Maybe it is the only convenience store in town that isn't a 7/11 or Macs? Almost.
I wasn't aware that it has been on here before, enough that you or anyone would remember it. The front of the store is on 17 Ave SW which became the Red Mile during the playoffs a few years ago.
