isn't that the upside down church from vancouver? where did they move it too?

Why did they move it?
Jimby
Oct 23, 2008, 5:42 AM
Yes, it was blocking the view for the NIMBYs in Coal Harbour so it was moved to Calgary for the next 5 years. Not sure where it goes after that.
It is located at the former Dominion Bridge industrial site (SE of downtown and the Stampede grounds) which is being transformed into offices, retail and eventually condos.

Yes eventually they will be redeveloped. The "blue whale" building is staying while the other one in the background will get knocked down.
From other angles, the background is better looking but I wanted the sun to light up the red glass which is why I shot into the sun with the craptacular background.
I was hoping the church would be placed at a more prominent place like on top of a high hill or downtown somewhere, but Torode the developer is paying so he can place it where he wants.
Here is the website for the project:

Ramsay Exchange is a GREAT brownfield redevelopment (including warehouse conversion) in a very interesting inner city neighbourhood. I love this piece of art. The developer is spending heavily on public art in many of its developments. Notably, about a million dollars on a piece called "Half K" but better known as "the scribble" at the Arriva project. The device to root out evil is an a little park along 24th ave.

There's another one in West Vancouver, "The Village at Park Royal"... dont know about the rest of Canada though.
As far as malls go they are pretty decent, gets people outside and creates a sense of streetlife... it is just a glorified mall though so the whole atmosphere seems quite contrived.

There are a few that look similar here on the east coast. The biggest I know of is a $100 million mixed residential/retail project in Dieppe, NB. As far as malls go, they have a much better urban feel. Having housing on site also gives it some much needed density.
Still a mall though.

Sandy Beach is a park downstream from the Glenmore Dam on the Elbow River. There is no sandy beach! But it is a beautiful park. There are 2 or 3 private houses with huge lots on the west side of the river next to the park, those properties never come on the market. Upstream is the Calgary Golf and Country Club, so although Bankers Hall, PetroCan and the Tower are visible to the north, it is like being out of the city. Quiet and serene.

You are completely full of shit.
There are no people with doctorates "homeless on Main." And even you must know that having a PhD is VERY different from "post secondary education of some sort." "Post secondary" might mean a semester at a trade school. A PhD is the highest degree that a person can receive and entails at least eight years of "post secondary." There are underemployed PhDs to be sure but none of them are homeless any more than are MDs homeless. If there is even ONE PhD on your trashy Main St I would be completely shocked.
Well said.
I concur.
It sounds like they bullshitted him into believing they all had PhD's and he was naive enough to believe them.

Actually while the % of homeless with a PHD would be insanely small, to rule it out entirely is also foolish. Many people with a PhD are highly intelligent, and highly intelligent individuals also have a higher rate of mental illness, such as schizophrenia. So it is very likely that a gifted individual obtained a PhD through scholarships but as they aged their schizophrenia could have become more severe or they stopped taking medication etc... disabling their ability to keep a job and properly function in society. So yes, seeing how little Canadian Governments care about the mentally ill these days i would not be surprised if there were 1 or 2 PhD homeless people on Main St.
Would it be the nor of course not! But to say "bullshit" all together is also wrong.

No police when I was in there, but I heard there usually is. It's been used for X-Files and D'Vinci's inquest in the past. The food is actually pretty decent.

Bingo! It's a couple blocks from MacDonald, maybe Balaclava. I can't quite remember the cross street, either.

Nov 13, 2008, 7:46 PM
:previous: of course they are! There a bunch more (taller) ones just across the street from there. If you look for them there are palm trees all around metro-Vancouver, in the middle of roundabouts, in-front of shopping malls, peoples houses, etc... Victoria and Nanaimo have even more. there are also a lot of banana trees planted around the city too. All of which stay outside year round (what else would you do?) Some people wrap the banana trees during the winter but the palm trees are always exposed. Even some banana trees are exposed all winter at lazy peoples houses and they always seem to survive to next spring.

I love Victoria, it is a small city with a big city feel. I am always amazed how dense and vibrant the city core is for a metro area under 400 000. So many new towers too!

Victoria may be one of the only (if not the only) city in Western Canada that has somewhat of an older eastern Canadian city feel.

I just don't get the AGO design. I'm not liking who the 'shield' has a curved part, and then this other section of glass tacked on over top angled down toward the street. It would look better as one cohesive curve. I like the pealed away looking glass sections at either end.
The blue box, just looks ridiculous. I thought that was the underlayer to some material they were going to stick on top!
The ROM is a much more compelling design to me, despite its finishing flaws.

The ROM with the AGO's materials would have been pretty cool.
Well, at least the AGO isn't titanium...

Exclusive images document a remarkable new chapter in AGO’s 108-year history
“We’re not just opening doors, we’re opening minds”. It is with this forward thinking slogan that the Art Gallery of Ontario opened its doors after a remarkable transformation penned by Toronto- born Frank Gehry.
Launched in 2002, the transformation programme has included the major architectural extension by Gehry and the expansion of the permanent collection. As a consequence, the new AGO offers a 47 per cent increase in art viewing space welcoming visitors to 110 light-filled galleries featuring more than 4,000 new and perennial art works.
The building is surprisingly Gehry’s first commission in his native city and contains an interesting array of signature elements such as an iconic sculptural staircase emerging from Walker Court (the historic centre of the AGO), the sweeping glass-and-wood Galleria Italia extending an entire city block along Dundas Street, and the new contemporary tower with its vistas of Grange Park and of a Toronto Skyline never seen from this angle.
With this new museum extension, Frank Gehry has devised an unforgettable space to honour the art housed within. Attention to the core issue of the pleasure of art viewing is palpable throughout thanks to the amount of natural light and transparency that permeate the extension.
Happy to define his recent creation as “a real Frank Gehry building”, the architect nonetheless commented on the hard nature of remodelling an existing structure, as the gallery has since its opening in 1900 seen many extension with the latest designed by Barton Myers in 1993.
