Heres a couple that I took (excuse the skillz) with my old skool 3.0 Pentax. The first one is from July 06' from the 17th floor at Brentwood town center, roughly 7.5kms from downtown.

This one is from about 6kms away at a park in my hood, June 05'

Andy, those are awesome pictures of Winnipeg.
I'll second that. Some of the best I have ever seen. Wow! That last pic was the old Bank of Hamilton on Main Street... my grandfather worked there as a young man in 1915. It has one of the most beautiful spiral staircases inside that I have seen, and was designed in that wonderful elegant Italian Renaissance style that was popular in Edwardian Winnipeg. I wish it had been a style that had been popular in more cities.... I think the first photo is the Child's Building, if I remember, and I also think the Waddel fountain was built because of a strange bequest... a woman died and left her money to her husband. BUT, if he remarried, he had to build a memorial modelled after the top part of the Albert Memorial in London! LOL! Cost him a pretty penny, but he was determined to remarry!

^ Looks like a UFO.
It kinda does. :P
It's neat the way it pops over the trees too. It's on a hill so you can see it from most of the south end at night. It's especially brilliant when driving up Balmoral at night, since the other buildings are poorly lit and there are trees between the campus and the road, it looks like it's in the bush.
I think it would have been better on the waterfront, but it isn't too bad there. We have to have somewhere in this city that looks decent.

yep good old memories of summer.
Nothing beats a regular old thunder storm.
I have noticed that those thunderstorms have become much more violent and frequent in recent years.
Really? Thunder Bay has gotten maybe a dozen thunder storms since 2003.
I remember in 2000 and 2001, they were an almost daily event from late May to early September.

Hmm, I wonder how u've managed to keep the thunder at bay...
Air pressure over the great lakes pushing weather systems away from the city. In recent years it has been surprisingly strong, and we're in a drought. We have 8cm of spotty snow right now, and grass is still visible in many places. Most of the creeks have dried.

Excellent photos as usual Taller! I particularly like the close-up focused shot of the icicles on the stairs...but of course, I love looking at the TO scrapers too :-)
Since the (cool) paintings of Halifax was posted above, here's one of my building paintings from several years ago that I still have kicking around (only one of two building pics left). It appears a little "warped" in the photo because of the paper..I won't mention the city, as I'm sure some may recognize - but it is a very different angle:

^thanks, I did that nearly ten years ago (watercolour, 22x30 inches. part-time artist...just haven't moved into it full-time - keep delaying). It's from my view at the Air Canada building across the street (prior to the renovations they made). I always found the roof interesting, and moved me into focusing on details...hence the reason I really like that stairs/icicle photo of yours :-)

IntotheWest
03-14-2007, 01:03 AM
I left the Peg in early 1998...to AB - Edmonton (St Albert actually) first, and then Calgary.
If I could ever peel myself away from this forum, I'd be able to maybe get some new paintings done...however, most of my past painting have focused on the automobile - not a favourite subject of folks around here :-)

Well I would love to see them, and I bet a lot of others would too... start a thread with your paintings! Much more inspiring than just simple photography.
Thanks! Well, most of my paintings as mentioned are both autos (car fanatic), and on the other side of the spectrum, flowers/trees, etc...I'll see if I have a couple other photos of some kicking around to post, but I'll dump them in this thread for now...
I've got a bunch of new building pics and ideas such as the Free Press one, but just haven't had a chance to work on them...once I have those, I'll post a new thread (the others just don't seem appropriate for a skyscraper forum site :-)
One of my auto pics is posted here (the picture comes from a photo I took at the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart):
http://www.ajac.ca/images/winnersgallery/2003/andrewjarman/highres.html
And then, my only other building related pic (pencil on watercolour paper 22x30, finished 1999). Started off as showing a friend "if the CN Tower was placed beside the Richardson Building"...and grew from there ;-) I have a new one planned as well:
