Well then, Cité Multimédia was historically known as Faubourg des Récollets after the nuns who settled there in the 17th century. They got the boot in the 18th century and the area turned into heavy industrial, feeding off the Lachine Canal and railroad trade. The opening of the St.Lawrence Seaway in 1959 made the canal and railways redundant (Ontario got the juice) and by the 1970's, the Faubourg was a disaster zone of abandoned factories. In the early 90's, the Québec government offered tax incentives to hi-tech companies who would set up shop in the Faubourg. They were required to use the existing buildings, but if they built new ones; they had to respect both the scale and the style of the existing neighbourhood. Different architects were required for each building. The result is that Montréal is now one of the world leaders in software development; particularly video games, and Cité Multimédia is one of the foremost examples of über cool urban development.

Thanks Jimby! It was my first outing with my new camera and it was raining off and on and just above freezing. I grabbed a beer at every dep along the way and by the time I reached Square Victoria, I was soaked, frozen and hosed! (my end of evening photos are a bit dodgy) Good sky though and nice mist.

I'm not going to be downtown tomorrow, so nope.
They're saying it will be next to impossible to get a glimpse of him.. Streets leading up to Parliament will all be closed. They're telling people not to poke their heads out of the windows if they work nearby, unless you want to be accidentally sniped. All of the traffic cams are going to be turned off too, so no one knows his route to Parliament Hill.

It was like that in Halifax 2004 when Bush came to town. Security everywhere, helicopters overhead, fighters circling the city.. Big difference in the reception though, 99% of the crowd were protesters not worshippers.

Hamilton harbour is frozen, but Lake Ontario is very deep. I thought there might be some icebergs floating around or ice on the beach. Lake Erie is very shallow, especially around Turkey Point, so it freezes quickly.

Feb 22, 2009, 11:22 AM
i think they called it the first - so there is potential - it had some good sponsors, Virgin radio, heinekein, opus hotel etc etc
they just need to deliver on what they promise - they were saying dj leanne would be there doing djing with the lights and well that didn't happen, some of the businesses did their own music and stuff
they let cars drive through the crowded streets - they finally realized it was a stupid idea and shut most of the roads off to traffic so the sidewalks and streets were much easier to navigate
if there is a second one it could fall during the olympics - which would be cool - this city needs to show some excitement to the world
it was really busy - i am sure the shops were happy

great shots SpongeG! i was there and had a great time although i was coming back from a dinner party and was a little drunk. i'm sure that helped.
i know that Hamilton street will have an illumiated art installation above the street during the olympics. something similiar to what was done in torino. hopefully they will bring this back next year. needs some tuning but it was a good start.

I was down to my favorite little spot in Bedford yesterday. Unfortunately I dropped my camera into the Harbour so I have to mail it away for repairs but here are some pictures I managed to save from the little trip (all photos by me);

In the last one, Halifax almost looks like a mini SanFrancisco!
Been having fun with angles this winter.

Part of the hospital. Celebrated it's 5th anniversary on Sunday. It opened on February 22, 2004.

The Twin City Gas Building. It's going to be torn down later this summer to make way for the new courthouse going up in Downtown Fort William.

The Royal Eddie. On Mars. With a bird. I had a lot of fun with this.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3567/3296738864_536baf99da.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidioman/3296738864/)
Renaissance Building on Brodie at Victoria. It has a mural of buff nudes holding up a cornice all along the top.

Upper floor of an old ceramics factory down the street from me. The building is still in use, fully occupied I think. It's home to a dance studio, a used clothing store, the offices of the neighbourhood garden project, etc.

United Church of Mars, circa 1889. Again, I had some fun. :)

A couple of weeks ago, I went to La Fête des Neiges at Parc Jean Drapeau. While there, I peeked through the trees and could barely make out downtown. I walked to the riverbank and discovered this amazing mist that was swirling over the river. I think it was due to the sudden rise in temperature that day. The photos don't do it justice as the combination of the ice chunks floating slowly by, the mist wafting in the opposite direction and the almost complete silence, save for the muffled sounds of the festival behind me, created a really unique atmosphere.

Hot water outflow from nearby SaskPower Queen Elizabeth 386 MW natural gas generating facility.
It certainly makes Saskatoon a bit more bearable during the winter months (could allow year round use of the future whitewater park...of course, heavy wet suits would be necessary).
I believe the North Saskatchewan in Edmonton also has ice free portions due to hot water outflow from an Epcor generating station.

I thought it had more to do with elevation and currents? There are places in the Ottawa river that are wide open in areas with rapids, then iced over in relatively calm waters. Does the river in Saskatoon have a lot of rapids? I'm unfamiliar with the area.. but I know the Red and Assiniboine in Wpg are fairly slow and steady.
Yesterday I actually saw some people ice fishing on the Ottawa River right next to open water.. I thought they were crazy.

Elevation and currents certainly play a role in directing where the warm water flows, thereby preventing freeze over in select areas. But, in Saskatoon, elevation and currents alone are not responsible for unfrozen portions of the water (except for the area of water near the weir; although during sustained colder temperatures, even the weir will freeze over).
The above is a hypothesis, I am by no means a hydrologist.

Westin, Shell Centre (33 floors), Rogers/Altius (28 floors?), and Canterra (46 floors). All the lights are on because people are at work at 6:40 am. The Old Spaghetti Factory in the foreground is going to be replaced by a Cadillac Fairview office building and hotel maybe some day.

No, the former Col. Belcher Vets Hospital on 12 ave which has been replaced by the Sheldon Chumir Downtown Health Centre (Health on 12th) next door. They are probably removing asbestos before they tear it down. The Belcher is now in the NW.
o was not sure if it was or not

Some from Vancouver today. It was nice and sunny so I headed out, took a couple shots then my batteries died. Then it snowed so I guess it all worked out cause I was home by time the snow came...
