If you can remember the exact spot that you took it, it would be very cool to get a nice summer shot from that angle. It really gives an amazing illusion of the field of grass going all the way downtown! Well done...

Probably wouldn't make a difference. That is the natural grass colour in this part of the country. You'd basically see more green from trees over in the Beltline, but that grass is staying a nice golden colour. Calgary is semi-arid, after all.

Yes they're old buildings, but I love how the clouds have that wispy look to them. This photo was taken on Saturday afternoon, before the "dense fog" descended on the city.

That is a very handsome early International Style building, and would look amazing if they could get rid of the other tacky signage.

^^ Thanks Whistler! The photos were taken from the top of the Sheraton Centre.. I don't work there but have contacts... I didn't have my tripod and I had a problem with light reflecting on the inside of the glass, so that picture of the view looking north was the only one that turned out. I love the ever changing light on that building, and perhaps they have this planned for Bay/Adelaide. It seems like an easy process now with LED lighting and computerized programmes; can you imagine the effect on a tall building? Would be spectacular!

Whistler, Taller.

Are you guys sure you'd want this kind of lighting on a major office tower? Don't you think it's a bit "tacky"...or should I say a little too "Hong-Kongish"?

It is surprisingly beautiful to watch the slowly changing colours.. I wouldn't want to see it on every building, but it would be amazing to see an entire office tower change colours like that!!

^Those lights look really cool. I do like some lights on buildings...there's an old building in downtown Winnipeg - about 12-15 storeys around Portage and Main - that has lights going all the way up. I'll have to see if I can find a pic - it looks really nice.

It certainly isn't a major office tower... prior to this, it was just a perfectly invisible building on Yonge St; which of course is the second point: it's Yonge. Loud and garish is what it does best.

The area around Metrotown is really being built-up nicely...I lived out of the Hilton there for a while. Also, the little clusters of condos going up on the Millenium line to the north is impressive.

I'm also impressed with the condos going up west of Skydome in that shot of 401_king (it is west, right? I always lose my bearings in TO area). Very impressive from when I was last working there in 02.

Unfortunately that last pic was not taken by me, I found it on the internet. It was taken on a hill in north Surrey, and overlooks New West and Burnaby. One day I would like to take a night pano (if I ever learn how) from this vantage point cause it would be very impressive, as many of the buildings in this shot are left out. 1. and I hate it when people not from here make a big drama out of T.O
2. im not going to go thru this whole thread , but i can bet u there are people who ARENT from T.O who posted pics saying "here are pics from dt, or the lake etc etc etc" in reference to THEIR city. its unfair to call out ppl from T.O about this.
3. read the thread title.
4. read the thread title again.
5. you are expected to read the city location of the poster posting pics. it takes a little common sense to figure that out.
6. read the thread title.

like one dude earlier posted a pic of main st of north bay, and just said, "heres main st" with no mention to north bay. shouldnt you be furious at this guy for "claiming" that main st only exists in north bay? gimmie a break!

That's weird, I've never had the slightest problem figuring this out. I would say that if the person is from Toronto, and posts pictures without specifying anything, just assume they are from Toronto. If the person is from Montreal and posts "downtown" pictures, assume they are from Montreal (following all this, FFX?) .Most people will SPECIFY if the pictures are not from their home town. Taking photos, organizing them, formatting them for forums, and posting takes a LONG time and is a lot of work. As pleasing as it may be for you to take this opportunity to kvetch about Toronto, maybe you should just ASK if you have questions. And better still, maybe take a few pix of your own, and contribute to the thread.

Still snow in Calgary? Spring has arrived out here. Birds chirping, no snow, almost double digit temperatures. I wore my winter jacket yesterday and was sweating.

Here's 2 (small) pictures from the tourism website I liked:

And a few more from PBase:

Northwest Arm:

Granville St, 1988. Looks the same now, except that one of the uglier buildings to the right of the photo has been restored:

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l217/halps00/33442719.jpg

Mackay Bridge, the (former) Commonwealth Games site is in the middle of the photo, under the bridge:

The Macdonald Bridge and some Dartmouth wildlife:

Purdy's Wharf, probably the last downtown highrise to be built so far:

Hmm.... not a clue.. probably posted by a Torontonian.. I hate that. There are more cities in Canada than just Toronto, you know......:D

"Spring" doesn't exist in Calgary... we move straight from winter to summer.

"Spring" doesn't exist in Calgary... we move straight from winter to summer.

In the shoulder months, that cycle happens every few days :-) We were sitting on our deck last Friday, +21c, and enjoying beers...it's been snowing and -5c for days now.

Despite the weather, nice pics Boris.

TB - love those conservatory pictures...makes me want to paint! I'll have to check out your blog.

And the rest...this thread keeps getting better. Shappy, great shots of Port Hope. Fantastic shots of Halifax, and Edm as well!

EDIT: Actually, I think every month in Calgary would be a "shoulder month".

Yes, it's known as the "tongue".

People also climb on top of it all the time and the city is obsessed with the possibility of getting sued when some kid finally falls off an cracks their head open.

Uptown Waterloo (these are all pics taken for projects at UW)

King Street - the main road through Kitchener and Waterloo, it has a blend of old and new buildings.

http://wwuploads.googlepages.com/uptown.jpg

Lots of new development in this picture... office uses, Starbucks, LCBO. More info on the SSC KW thread.

The Perimeter Institute - It is an independent, resident-based research institute devoted to foundational issues in theoretical physics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theoretical_physics) (wikipedia)

This is actually a parking garage :D

Seagram's Lofts - converted barrel warehouses - 103 condo units

Life on the streets of Waterloo

Cool-looking building - even better when seen from the other direction because of the way it is positioned (you can't see the main facade from this angle - it's in the first pic)
