looks cool - does montreal have problems with crowds? Vancouver would have an event like that - someone would get stabbed, alcohol would be seized, fights would break out and it would be cancelled the following year - lol

None whatsoever. About the worst they do here is make a lot of noise and leave a lot of litter behind. Montreal is about as safe as you can get despite its somewhat sleazy/gritty image.

London Drugs has great street presence but the actual entrance is via Woodwards' central atrium.

http://creativecommons.org/images/public/somerights20.png (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/ca/) Taken by SFUVancouver, December 8th, 2009
The Woodwards atrium is still a work in progress, and, truthfully, it feels a little dated for a brand new building. With that said, the idea is quite brillant. By bringing shoppers into the atrium en route to London Drugs and Nesters Market/Woodwards Food Floor, it creates a constant stream of people through the public space. Add to that the hundreds of office workers who, I believe, will be able to come and go via the atrium from their offices to the street and the adjacent City parking garage. Plus there will be more than a thousand Simon Fraser University art students using the atrium to access the new SFU School for the Contemporary Arts. All together the atrium should feel like a busy, active concourse and it will be much brighter too once the sun starts climbing again from its current low winter position in the sky.

A gigantic photo mural of a reenactment of the Gastown Riots by artist Stan Douglas overlooks the atrium and helps delineate the indoor atrium form the outdoor (and still under construction) plaza.

From that early meeting of two leaders came the foundation of the communities of Saskatoon, Nutana, and Riversdale which eventually amalgamated to form Saskatoon.

as of december 2009, it is the largest spherical panorama image in the world.
192,000 pixels wide by 96,000 pixels high, some 18.4 billion pixels in total, weighing in close enough to 20 GB to make the jaw drop. To put it in analog terms, it would be 16 meters long on actual photographic paper.

We criticize our snow removal a lot but people don't realize that in fact, it is the best in Canada(or at least one of the best).
From the gazette: I lived in Montreal for 46 years and now live in Calgary and believe me, Montreal has the best snow removal in Canada. Most Calgary streets never see a plow all winter long. Only the main roads are plowed.
^^It snowed pretty recently but not like a blizzard :). Sidewalks do get cleared though, and they were cleared where I was that day.

From the gazette:
LOL! People here complain too much about EVERYTHING! Anywhere else I've lived, sidewalk clearing is optional and snowbank removal is unheard of. They even clear the downtown bike lanes here.
Here's an article from the Toronto Star. I guess the army doesn't do sidewalks! (and where the hell is "Old Toronto"?)
Sidewalks need clearing, not constant over-salting
By Antonia Zerbisias
Living Columnist
Published On Wed Dec 10 2008
When city hall says it can't clear the sidewalks in "old Toronto'' because they're too narrow, it's burying the truth.
This snow job I bought over years of being nice and clearing my ice within the required 12 hours of a snowfall. This I believed despite measuring the width of sidewalks in my native Montreal and comparing them with those on the Riverdale streets where I've lived here.
There is no difference. None.
I know all this because, last year, during our winter of deepest discontent, early one morning, as I was moving the mountain deposited in front of my driveway by the city grader, I spotted one of those little one-man tractor ploughs making its way down the street.
To Montrealers, these are familiar sights. They're essential to that city's world-class snow removal ballet.
For that is what it is, a brilliantly choreographed performance that begins with "No Parking'' sandwich boards, followed by tow trucks to take away the cars of the heedless. Then come the sidewalk tractors, which push the snow into the street, which the graders sweep into tall ridges, which the snow ploughs grind into the waiting convoy of dump trucks which take it all away.
In less than 20 rumbling minutes, pedestrians can walk, bikers can bike, drivers can drive and nannies can push strollers.
With a system like that, nobody, like that poor man I saw crack his head open on the sidewalk at Danforth and Broadview last January, needs to hire Sherpas to cross the street. Nobody needs crampons to walk to the bus because so many property owners don't shovel. Nobody needs to be housebound because their wheelchairs or walkers can't negotiate the narrow and slippery ruts. It turns out, you see, that when that sidewalk-clearing guy rattled my way last winter, I stopped and asked him point blank, "How come I have never seen you before?'' He told me that the city was "too cheap'' to deploy its fleet of 300 of these little ploughs on streets like mine.
Then he cleared my sidewalk – and, very kindly, also my driveway – and moved on.
Obviously, a better snow removal strategy would be very costly indeed, as any Montreal taxpayer can tell you. And, here in Toronto, we're already burdened by everything from permits to park on our own front pads to garbage bins.
But what about lost time and productivity? What about the burden to our health care system due to broken limbs?
More important, what about the environment?
No sidewalk clearing strategy leads to more salt, which this week has been everywhere.
This while praise has been heaped on Mayor David Miller for his "green agenda'' which banned pesticides on lawns and bottled water sales at municipal facilities.
But still, every winter the city dumps 135,000 tonnes of salt on the streets – and that doesn't count what lazy home and business owners irresponsibly pour on the sidewalks instead of shovelling. (That's assuming they do any ice clearing at all, of course.)
That salt wrecks our boots, bikes and cars. It kills trees and vegetation. It poisons marine life. It destroys doggie feet, burning their tender pads. And it leeches into our lakes and streams.
There are alternatives, cleaner, greener and, of course, more expensive. The city is using some of them, while protesting that using more would blow the $70 million snow removal budget.
But salt is very costly indeed – to our streets, bridges and expressways, not to mention our water supply.
Something to think about when you lose your hubcap to that pothole next spring.
The city should do two things. Clear the sidewalks. And get salt off the water table.

:previous: Silly article, "Costly to the Toronto water supply"? I was not aware the drinking water there was pumped from below Yonge Street. Plowing sidewalks is a waste of money. The machines they use for it here in Halifax seem to be a decimetre wider than the sidewalks and they're can be quite destructive to roadside tree roots, fences, and such -- as a country we need the extra exercise shoveling, anyway.

Quebec City has some of the best architecture in Canada period. The best part is that they never really had a boom in the 1960s so most everything is still in tact. It's just unfortunate that they have lost the Armoury to fire though.
Do most people in Quebec City cheer for the Habs now? Or have they chosen other teams? Has the city largely "moved on" from hockey?

I'd say that most people in Québec now cheer for the Montreal canadiens , during playoffs last years you could see a lot of Habs flag on cars and such ...
But there are also those who hate them and will cheer for any team that oppose them....
That being said I'd say that the second most cheered team in Québec are the Boston Bruins..

^Great pics! What bar/restaurant is that last pic from?
Here are a few pics from earlier in December which I didn't upload until a few days ago. They were taken during a tree lighting ceremony outside of the VAG:

Unfortunately not such a good picture, but you can just (sort of) make out Diana Krall and Elvis Costello on stage, officially lighting the tree:

Thanks for all the great Vancouver-in-winter shots of late.
It's so gratifying to see Robson Square finally serving as a great year-round focal point for downtown. The ice rink and Olympic renovations have done wonders and suddenly made the dour space exciting again. I cannot wait for the zip lines to be installed from the Court House to the Art Gallery. I wish that trolley lines could be installed so that the #5 Robson could divert around the Robson Square block via Georiga for eastbound buses and Smithe for westbound buses so that the street in front of the Art Gallery could be closed off for public events.

I love that ski lift photo up top, is that at the Olympic park? Nice Edmonton & Vancouver shots too :)
Thanks very much wco and alps! Alps, if you're referring to my image, yeah it's a ski hill, called Edmonton Ski Club (never been myself). It's smaller than Rabbit Hill and Snow Valley, but I think bigger than Sunridge or whatever. And no, Olympic Park is in Calgary.
heres some more!
