A bunch of fibreglass dinosaurs south of town. No one is really sure why they're there but there are. There are more now since last time, I guess their owner made some new ones or something?

Actually, seniors are too afraid to leave their building now, and stay inside. But just in case. ;) They all live in the tall red building on the right.

There is nothing creepy about the way the ice is melting. As the ice weakens, it starts to sink... water flows up through the crack caused by this, and naturally forms a circle. No aliens or crop-circles involved!

It was mostly a joke. But compared to southern Ont, it rarely gets "green" the way you'd maybe expect. Its drier out here, and we have a lot of natural grass that is brown/yellow anyway (Nose Hill for example).

Your lawn ain't natural turf bud, and it gets watered. Just go 5 minutes outside of city limits and it is just yellow, brown, brown, brown... or just look at Nose Hill, brown all year round...

Personally, I find the common obsession with the grass being green to be very, very annoying. It's like people can't conceptualize what a semi-arid grassland is. Not to mention how much water is wasted every year over this... OMG, think of the poor people in Utah who have a hard time keeping their grass green...

vid
Apr 18, 2007, 5:17 AM
In this area, grass is abnormal. It's either rock or underbrush. There just aren't supposed to be acres of grass in this ecozone.

And if you're posting images from flickr you have to either name the photographer, link the image to it's image page, or both. If Fflint ever decides to look at Canadian cities, he'll have your ass on a plate for that!

Ah...fflint. :P

Once you have decided to post your photos on flickr.com you are basically saying to the world - these photos are now in the public domain. I mean flickr.com is a photosharing website. If you dont want the pictures to be saved or linked. flickr gives you that option.

Anyways... I always try and give due respect to the photographers at flickr.com

I think it is always best to credit photos if you can, but Caltrane is correct. A photo on the internet is like a photo in a newspaper.. if you are not making money off it, it is in the public domaine. The only true way to keep photos private is not to post them on the internet, or print your name across the photo as a trademark.

It is important to acknowledge who took the photograph, and with Flickr it is easy to do. The worst thing to do is to post photographs and not even mention that they are not your own (unless, of course it is a rendering of a proposed project). If you didn't take the photo, and it appears that you might have, you really should say so.

If that does happen - you didn't know they were lying, so it isn't your fault. If you link back to where you got it, instead of just putting the name without a link, people can view the comments on the image, which would likely tell if it was copied from somewhere else.

Personally, I'd only post my own photos - if my camera wasn't broken. We're moving down to the water front in a couple weeks, it'll be a great place for photos. :(

Nose Hill DOES become green. After a lot of rain in the late spring/early summer it can be downright emerald. Even in drought years it was more than brown and yellow. In the fall the sumac and such make it a sort of red/yellow mottling and it can be pretty, not gorgeous but pretty.

Okay - again, I was half-joking...but I was also comparing "green" to the deep-green Ontario gets. I acknowledge Nose Hill does get somewhat "green", but the rough fescues and western wheatgrass (that make up the majority of Nose Hill) are in Calgary's climate, naturally more "yellow".

Boris - I completely agree about the lawns...and even the most watered, green lawns in Calgary hardly compare to the incredible greens around Toronto.

1 trillion liters of water a day wasted on lawns in North America...

Great shots! Calgary was off to a good start in March, but the cold weeks in April seem to have slowed progress...I've only seen some crocuses popping up - which seem a few weeks late. The rain this week should help though.

Great panos of Victoria and I LOVED those 'Peg pix, Tom!

Not exactly.

The mural of Goldie has a couple of chips in it, one of them on his pants. Doesn't look good.

The other is the Victoria skyline. What is the problem with that place? Was it designed by the same people who designed Saskatoon? Everything has to be a rectangular sandstone beige box?
