Wow, I sometimes forget how grim and depressing that stretch of Bay is. They really made some huge mistakes on that street. Hopefully it can be salvaged, fixed, pedestrianized, and beautified?

Jan 6, 2011, 11:28 AM
Why does Bay Street, have to be a wild exciting pedestrian street?. I like it boring and empty, when I don't want to deal with teenage gangsters, dumb tourists, and shopping divas.
This is a residential street, please don't make it busy, every other street in the area has a lot of people; I like that this street is quiet.

Indeed. What's an even bigger shame is that it was only demolished to build this 1970s office building/college campus/gym/parking mecca that used to be a mall when it was first built.

Montreal seen from space at night (courtesy the International Space Station), December 24, 2010.
Click on photo to make it bigger.
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/9741/iss026e012474.jpg (http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/9902/iss026e012474lrg.jpg)
Montreal, the largest city in the mostly French-speaking Province of Quebec, is considered by some to be the cultural capital of Canada. The metropolitan area (image center) is the country’s second-largest, having been surpassed by Toronto in 1976. While the city of Montreal is located on the Island of Montreal, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence (image center) and Ottawa rivers (not visible), the city takes its name from Mont Royal, located at the city’s center. Several smaller urban areas form a loose ring around the metropolitan area: Sorel-Tracy, Saint-Hyacinthe, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Saint-Jerome, and Joliette are among those that can be readily identified.
This astronaut photograph of the city lights of Montreal illustrates the extent of urbanization. Major roadways and industrial areas are traced by bright white lighting, while the adjacent residential and commercial lands are characterized by more diffuse yellow-gold lighting. Rivers and other water bodies appear black, while the surrounding countryside is faintly illuminated by moonlight. Blurry areas at image top and bottom right are caused by cloud cover.
The International Space Station was located over the Pennsylvania-New York border (near Warren, Pa.) at the time this image was taken—a ground distance of approximately 600 kilometers (370 miles) southwest of Montreal. This distance from the camera target, coupled with the oblique (inclined) viewing angle from the ISS, results in the foreshortened appearance of urban areas in the image.
Astronaut photograph ISS026-E-12474 was acquired on December 24, 2010, with a Nikon D3S digital camera using a 180 mm lens, and is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations experiment and Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by the Expedition 26 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast. Lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Caption by William L. Stefanov, NASA-JSC.

Nice picture. Why isn't St Jean sur Richelieu counted in the Montreal cma again? It looks closer to Montreal than St Jerome which is counted. Hell, Sorel, St Hyacinthe and Joliette should be counted as well. If those 4 towns were added to greater Montreal it would add 200,000 people to the cma which would put us over 4 mil.

When you drive from Montreal to St-Jerome, you feel a continuous urban scape, while there is ample unbuild area between Montreal and St-Jean.
There has to be a given number of people in St.Jean commuting to Montreal (30% of the pop. I think) before it can be included to the CMA. Up to now St.Jean is a distinct CMA because it fails to reach the given rate, but it sure will be annexed in the future. So the empty areas between St.Jean and the south shore have nothing to do with this, in fact it is green zoning and will not see development anytime soon. (same for the eastern part of Laval)

I do too, however I wish we had gotten just a little less than we did. It always takes at least 4 days for the city to come plow residential streets. :/

vanman, you know our secret now. mississauga's downtown is just one really huge mall, and massive 10 lane arterial roads.

^The funny thing is just before you enter the city center it looks as though its a very dense area, it is actually quite impressive. However once you're actually in the city center you realize that all the buildings are inward facing, spaced far apart, with high fences and massive arterial roads. Just goes to show that skyline |= urban.
Here a few more pics of Toronto. I think I'll do a photo thread later:

That is in the Distillery district. It would be awesome for a skyscraper to have an edge as sharp as that running the height of the entire building, although it would be a complete waste of space.

From Yesterday morning:
For those who don't know, a Toronto Police officer was killed last Wednesday morning when a man hijacked a snowplow and led Toronto Police on a dangerous chase throughout the city. Sgt. Russell was trying to stop it when he was deliberately run over by the snowplow and died from his injuries. The man was shot 4 times by Toronto Police and was taken to hospital. RIP Sgt. Russell.

/\ very powerful. I recall years ago after those four RCMP were shot in Mayerthorpe and there was a massive service at the U of A. Thousands of cops from all over NA were there and the "parade" as they entered, in all of the dozens of various uniforms from their local police force, was an incredible sight.

I remember the Fallen 4 funeral as well and recalled how moving it was to see so much RCMP Red. I also recall PCL put Canadian flags on their cranes that day.

I appreciate some good looking graffiti. Though, if you get caught spray painting words or other goofy shit on public property, I support chemical castration and the removal of the trigger finger used to push down the aerosol spray, by way of hammer and fork.

Interesting shots of Calgary. I like to see pictures of different parts of the city. Great work, may have to go to Calgary one of these years and check out the place. It looks really nice.
