More of BMO Field, and some random soccer mania I found on flickr.com. I actually feel bad for the Raptors, they're in the playoffs but this whole city seems to have jumped on the soccer band wagon. Can't say I'm surprised after the craziness we had last year during the world cup.

The other is the Victoria skyline. What is the problem with that place? Was it designed by the same people who designed Saskatoon? Everything has to be a rectangular sandstone beige box?

Too much glass or too nice a curve and a design will get rejected by the city's panel for being "like Vancouver." Also, the height restrictions prohibit slender proportions, hence the glut of fatscrapers.

Anyway, probably 80% of the large buildings visible in these pics were built prior to 1980. There are actually quite a few fine modern buildings in the mix (and maybe 15-20 under construction) but you can't see them because they're obliged to be much shorter than the existing dreck. Thus, the height restrictions that were instituted as part of the backlash against the commie blocks of the 1960s and 1970s have actually amplified the drab presence of the older buildings.

^^Some of Victoria's new condos going up look really promising...they were always advertising for "the Falls" (?) condo - looked quite cool.

^CCF, that looks the same as just south of Calgary, heading into the foothills. Is that from around Qu'appelle?

Same valley but it's actually near a bedroom community called Deer Valley. Community on a golf course. It's about 15 minutes away from Regina. The valley is brown now, but will glow green in the summer months.

Expensive course too....

Errrr, well I guess it was only $70....but that's expensive considering how many courses are in the area and the fact that it's spring and conditions aren't prime.

those tracks are used primarily for rerouting purposes now. Some of the streetcar lines were taken out of service back when the subway was built.

So, I may be getting some new pictures to post here tomorrow. I'll be heading out in a couple of hours to buy some new camera equipment (D40 Body + Tamron 18-250mm lens + other items). See if I can get some new angles on downtown. I'm about as giddy as a schoolgirl right now.

Last Mountain.

My family has a cottage on the same side of Last Mountain Lake. That place has a really rugged beauty that most are unaware even exists. Stark contrast from the seas of flat fields that are 20 minutes away.

A boat filling up at a grain elevator along the Kaministiquia River. This is one of the smaller ones, I think the second or third smallest? I thought it was abandoned but apparently now.

it should be noted for the out of towners that the big open lot on waterfront drive in that nice winnipeg photo was home to the steam plant, which provided power to downtown for a century and will soon have a nice new 'exchange district friendly' condo development on it....you can see the sales centre near the street.

there is also an RFP out to develop that dockyard on the river....it is curently where the river boats dock.

I have searched this forum extensively and find no mention of smaller Canadian cities other than North Bay Ont. Does anyone have some recent pics of this classic prairie city of some 80,000 people? If so could you post them. I have been an avid follower of the city's growth and development over the years. Although I have kept upto date on the general progress I am not able to find good images of the skyline (there is one) other than a poor one I took many years back from the west side near the University. This is my firsst ever post of any kind. I am looking forward to many more.
