Pictures took in 1908 during the 300th anniversary celebrations. On some of the pictures you can see real military parades whereas others only portray reenactment of coronations and battles.

:previous: cool! The McCord is a treasure trove especially with the Notman photographic collection. I have never heard of Spencerwood before so I googled it.
Here is some Calgary history. The Calgary Brewing and Malting Co. which later became Molson's in the historic Inglewood neighbourhood is going to be redeveloped perhaps modeled after the Distillery District in Toronto.

err....how about the flat landscape, the trees, the development on each side of a river, the cluster of tallest towers that step down to lower ones, similar building types, both downtowns stretch along one longer axis
oh, i also see an NHL hockey arena in both.
....we all know edmonton is bigger if that is your concern.

Also, I think it should be noted that the buildings in the second photo are currently under renovation, and not just bombed-out facades.

More or less. It's going to be a six storey office building, but I think the bottom three floors will function more or less as before the reno, with ground floor retail.

The city seemed a million miles away, when I took this shot of a fishing boat chugging up the Fraser River at Steveston:

But turning just 45 degrees shows one of the many condo complexes lining the river in this desirable part of Richmond, just south of Vancouver. In teh foreground is Phoneix Pond, where the boats used to puul up in front of the long-gone Phoenix Cannery.

Anyways, here is a rarely seen area of vancouver in photos, its not glass towers, its not drug addict alleys, its not amazing parks, its not the beach....its a train yard at the southern end of Cambie Street. (next to the Fraser River)

But the best part is that the fall colours are at their peak in Metro Vancouver right now, so it demanded pictures, hehe.

you know what i like best about Vancouver and the west coast in general? all that sweet assed fruit that grows there. black berries, peaches, plums, apples, it just insane how different the fruit grows there as compared to anywhere from the Rockies eastward. incredible difference. as soon as you get to the Alberta border its like, no more fruit saith the lord. which sucks because i love to pick it fresh. the Okanagan is sick when it comes to peaches. the best anywhere period.

Both annapolis and Niagara are great growing areas, but they do not necessarily capture the starkly different bio-diversity seen in the Okanagan and SW BC.
Maybe the fruit isnt really the best way to highlight it but the florae you see there really is dramatically different to what you see in the rest of the country.
I actually remember reading an article about a guy who grew an orange tree that actually managed to produce oranges... pretty amazing for Canada.

Here's an awesome bird's eye shot that JustinMacD posted in the Halifax forum:
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/387845_10150444934913390_510308389_8378016_2087070318_n.jpg
The foreground shows the Spring Garden Road area, Halifax's busiest shopping strip, which is seeing a lot of new developments as of late. There is a large apartment building going up in the centre of the shot, as well as a smaller bank building. The new Halifax Central Library (U/C) would be to the right of the photo. Near the library site, the city recently sold three parcels of land that will hopefully soon see a few mid-rise mixed use buildings go up. And a couple of blocks to the West (left of the photo) is the Trillium, a 19-floor condo building that is nearing completion.
The area will be completely unrecognizable in ten years time.

I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no way that you can grow an orange tree anywhere in the ground in Canada.... I'm not referring to a planter that you move inside when it gets too cold. BTW, I produce, oranges, limes, grapefruit, etc. here in Mexico... I know what the requirements are.

N_XyjqqSHfM
That's a real tree... but it's not an "orange tree". The problem is that the guy in the video is misidentifying the tree.... it could be some type of citrus hybrid with extreme cold hardiness... It for sure is some type of citrus tree, and it does appear to be planted in the ground (not just in a moveable pot).
Here is a cold hardiness chart for many types of citrus (in F)... If anything, the chart is exaggerating the cold hardiness of some citrus... take key limes for example.... I know that they don't like to be exposed to anything below about 40 F.... although that wouldn't be sufficient to kill them... However, if frost so much as touches them, they are dead... so to suggest that you don't have to protect them until it gets to below 32 (as the chart says) is wrong.
http://www.fourwindsgrowers.com/our-citrus-trees/citrus-variety-info-chart.html
From the chart, you can see that "orange trees" can't stand temperatures much below freezing...
So the video does nothing to support the claim that "orange trees" can be grown outside in the ground in Canada.... and I'm not talking about going to extreme measures to protect them during the cold periods.
Even in Florida, the citrus belt really only begins south of Orlando! Forget about growing them in Canada... even if our climate warmed considerably so we never got frosts, the fruit would never mature to sweetness... it takes a long period of heat/sunshine to do that.

Hardy oranges, lemons, limes and other citrus actually do grow and produce fruit on the BC coast, and they're in the ground all year. They also grow quite a few hardy palm trees on the coast as well. The citrus they grow in BC aren't the navel oranges they grow in Florida, but they are edible and some are very sweet.
They don't need protection at all either, only if there is a severe cold outbreak, then it's usually only for a few days. Even in Virginia's southern shore area around Virginia Beach, citrus are grown at their northern limit on the east coast. There is documented evidence all over the net.
Check out the Hardy palm and Subtropical board for all the information you need.

I wasn't talking about Palm trees... I'm talking orange trees... and not just Navels or Valencias.
BC simply doesn't meet the semi-tropical climate requirement of orange trees... To believe what you are saying, you couldn't have spent much time looking at the hardiness chart that I posted. Beyond what you purport, just what varieties of "oranges, lemons and limes" are grown successfully in BC? Please name the cultivars.
Lots of citrus groves used to exist north of Orlando in Florida, but they took most of them out because there were too many problems with frost over the years damaging the trees... and that's in Florida... I understand that you weren't necessarily referring to Florida's commercial citrus crops... but the problem is neither is some other citrus cultivate grow to any large degree in northern Florida... Certainly not in Virginia. The reason is the climate isn't conducive to doing so.
And BTW, not a lot of Navels are grown commercially in Florida, they are grown more in California.... Florida grows more Valencias or Hamlins... this is due to the exacting climate requirements of the cultivars... Valencias need humidity to produce lots of juice... Southern CA gives the Navel a better balance of sweet and acidity.

We should plant some orange groves here in Burnaby immediately to take advantage of the tropical near-zero temperatures and the six hours of grim twilight that is a December day in this part of the world. I'm sure they'd just take off during the multi-week 20 degree summers too!

The citrus grown in northern latitudes are all bred and crossed for improved hardiness, like in Japan, France, and yes, BC. Just google hardy citrus and you'll find plenty of evidence.

A few years back the city took on a new streetscaping initiative where they have been upgrading medians, planting trees as well as installing christmas lights during the season along Dougall road which is a major road in Windsor, but it was somewhat awkardly laid out and looked dismall for years. This stretch of road is effectively trenched, running along side a CN railway and it leads into our main road in the downtown core.
I think the city has done a good job doing what they can to liven this stretch of road up.
Anyways, long story short, here are some pics.

theres a guy in north van who claimed his banana trees started to get fruit but they could never fully mature
There is a guy two houses down from me who's banana tree had fruit this year. He also has dozens of young palm trees that he sells. The cool thing is they all seed themselves naturally in his yard. I have heard of people in Victoria (especially in Oak Bay) where windmill palm saplings will actually sprout up in their yard. Many parts of the south coast are mild enough and protected enough from arctic outflows to have it where windmill palms not only survive, but actually produce fruit and potential offspring. (the sexual reproduction organs of windmill palms are killed far before the tree itself, hence it can be grown (stunted of course) in some more extreme climates but can not produce fruit).
And about the oranges, i don't think the claim was ever that we can grow Florida variety oranges or grow any citrus fruit in a production manner, but it does seem that some forms of citrus trees can be grown here, in the ground, with possibly no protection in the best of sites (i am thinking Oak Bay) and produce fruit.
Having my heritage part Italian, almost everyone in my family has fig trees in their yard. A big benefit to me about living on the south coast, and they do produce fruit annually (some summers two crops in the best of spots), are planted in the ground and do not require any winter protection. At least, no one in my family has ever protected them and they always do fine. My Grandpa had a massive one at his house before he sold it.
Anyways, here are some pics I took biking around yesterday of some more False Creek and area palm trees, producing fruit and non-protected during the winter (and out in the open, not snug against buildings).
