Do you know when most of the English Bay windmills were planted? They've grown quite a bit since I lived in BC.

I hope the Eaton Centre galleria roof isn't replaced. The renovation was disappointing, particularly the loss of the distinctive railings/light fixtures. The new suspended artwork is great though.

I think the oldest (the large stands and the end of Davie and the ones I pictured on Pacific) were planted about 20 to 30 years ago. Many of the mid height ones i think 10 to 20 years ago, and there are actually many new ones that have been planted in the last year or two (only about a foot high, hehe).

But yeah, some of them are getting pretty tall now, and the trunks of some of the larger ones are become solid at the base (no more furryness)

This is a pic taken of Toronto looking southerly from Queens Park on University Avenue. I took this pic a couple of weeks ago on a late autumn walk:

There is a guy two houses down from me who's banana tree had fruit this year. He also has dozens of young palm trees that he sells. The cool thing is they all seed themselves naturally in his yard. I have heard of people in Victoria (especially in Oak Bay) where windmill palm saplings will actually sprout up in their yard. Many parts of the south coast are mild enough and protected enough from arctic outflows to have it where windmill palms not only survive, but actually produce fruit and potential offspring. (the sexual reproduction organs of windmill palms are killed far before the tree itself, hence it can be grown (stunted of course) in some more extreme climates but can not produce fruit).

And about the oranges, i don't think the claim was ever that we can grow Florida variety oranges or grow any citrus fruit in a production manner, but it does seem that some forms of citrus trees can be grown here, in the ground, with possibly no protection in the best of sites (i am thinking Oak Bay) and produce fruit.

Having my heritage part Italian, almost everyone in my family has fig trees in their yard. A big benefit to me about living on the south coast, and they do produce fruit annually (some summers two crops in the best of spots), are planted in the ground and do not require any winter protection. At least, no one in my family has ever protected them and they always do fine. My Grandpa had a massive one at his house before he sold it.

Anyways, here are some pics I took biking around yesterday of some more False Creek and area palm trees, producing fruit and non-protected during the winter (and out in the open, not snug against buildings).

And also to my delight I discovered a couple Arbutus trees along the sea wall. Arguably Canada's most exotic native tree.

Cheers

We actually have a lot of fig trees growing here in Windsor also, and some people protect them while others never have. They fruit here with no problem, and make it through most winters with little or no damage.

In the summer some art students did a little project where they wrote out large words in a parking lot downtown in the hopes that if Google updated their images for the city the message would be seen. It turns out that their plan worked! I thought it was kind of neat.

This parking lot is about to go bye bye in a month due to a large complex being built there so I think it's neat they managed to pull it off in time.

The message says 'AS OF 2011 09 21 WE ARE ALIVE & WELL'

Downtown Windsor in 1938.

Notice we had street cars which we no longer have. We were the first canadian city to have an electric street car system. Introduced in 1886, shutting down in 1939.

I've walked in the Montmorency park just next to the Seminary quite often but I've never noticed that the gravel on the ground was delimiting any shape in particular until I saw the following aerial picture. I than noticed that it seemed to delimit the shape of a building (small park at the bottom of the picture).

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4026/5173583119_a79a404d23_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/michelroy/5173583119/)
From to ultimate top of Quebec city (http://www.flickr.com/photos/michelroy/5173583119/) par www.digitaldirect.ca (http://www.flickr.com/people/michelroy/), sur Flickr

Afterwards, I remembered that the Bishop's Palace, which eventually served as the Canadian Parliament for a while, used to stand there. I'd rather for this beautiful building to be still up but I find it neat that at least it is remembered in such a way.

Canadian Parliament in Quebec City

The Bishop’s Palace—home of the archbishop—was built between 1693 and 1695 on the site where Montmorency Park is located today. The government rented the palace in 1792 and then purchased it in 1830 to turn it into a parliament building. Work on the palace, considered the finest in all of the British Empire, was completed in 1850. Sadly, it burned to the ground in 1854 and was replaced by a parliament/post office building, which was inaugurated in 1860 and destroyed by fire in 1883.

Thanks, that kind of was the most of that tour, it was King Street from Dufferin to Queen. I left out some from the original tour though.

davidivivid, thanks as well, ya Toronto has a plethora of red brick. Except for the core where you'll find a little more lime stone the majority of Toronto was built using the bricks made at the Brickworks in the Don Valley. Almost every street in the original Toronto boundaries is made with structures that are built using that very brick.

Here are a few pics of my hood Riverside.

^ did you happen to walk down the "alley" that is shown on this photo? One of a handful of really cool, tight, urban rowhouse alleys in the city. There another just east of here running between King & Queen named Bright St. There's also a bunch in the Chinatown-Kensington Area.

Winnipegs "Underground City"

- Winnipeg Square (mall under 360 Main, few stores and food court)
- Concourse (transit help, numerous banks, a few stores, roundabout)
- 201 Portage section (food court, good pizza!)
- Richardson section (slighty higher-end services and stores)

I live in Winnipeg. Been as far as:

North: Edmonton
West: Salmon Arm, BC
South: Steinbach or Elm Creek, MB
East: Kenora, ON

it was a reference to the "you are here" translation: vous ete ici instead of vous êtes ici. Été could be 'been' or 'summer'

Downtown Windsor, with some vacant buildings and a little urban spray paint art.

I took this photo while I was checking out the newly finished $15 million riverfront stage built along Windsor's 6km long park along the river downtown. I couldn't resist capturing the Renaissance Center in Detroit. The wall is the back of the main stage.
