Enough is enough. At this point, more Quebecers side with the government than with the students. The government even made a small compromise in spreading the increase out over 7 years (based on 10 courses a year, that comes out to $250 more a year instead of $325). The government is also putting more funding into student aid. I think this is quite fair. For the record, I am, myself, a university student in my final year (majoring in bean counting at Concordia).

Here is what I have to pay in my last semester next fall for 4 courses (and this after only one increase):
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/7551/capturevtv.png

I don't think it is that bad, considering that almost no students end up paying any actual income tax. My tuition is so inexpensive that my tax refunds covered all my 2011 amount (!)

Not at all. More Quebecers agree with the government's proposition than with the FEUQ's and FECQ's proposition. Also, keep in mind that Agence QMI always adds "si vous deviez payer plus d'impôts" at the end of their questions, so you can't rely on theses results.

The government is also putting more funding into student aid

Everything that's added in funding is cut in tax credit. There is no additional money.

Nobody seems to know. It will remain closed this summer as studies are done to find a new use for it. Numbers have dwindled over the years. Bad marketing, tired attractions.

This is across from the Drake Hotel.

As a Concordia student I'm really jealous of Université de Montréal's campus. As much as an urban campus is interesting, sometimes I think it would be interesting to have a more traditional campus.

Here is Concordia's Downtown campus, John Molson School of Business on the left and the Engineering and Visual Arts Complex on the right.

As attractive as those buildings are, the campus also includes this monstrosity (McConnell Library Building):

http://www.flickr.com/photos/23732561@N07/2407882882/sizes/l/in/photostream/

And this one, I have mixed feelings about (Hall Building):

http://www.flickr.com/photos/concordiauniversity/6310030294/sizes/l/in/photostream/

And then there is the Loyola campus, which has a more traditional feel. However most Concordia students never really get to use this campus unless they are in a few specific Arts/Science programs:

Halifax skyline shots from the Shipfax blog (which is focused on ships but sometimes has great city photos too):

I am surprised how tall the crane for the library looks. Part of that is the hill and part of it might be the planned height of the structure itself. It will only be 6 floors but some of those levels will be much taller than normal. Once it's built it might actually be pretty visible in the skyline despite not being a highrise. The Clyde Street buildings starting this summer should be visible too. Halifax looks fairly densely built up in these photos but actually there is a lot of room to fill in with new buildings.

Something else that first photo reveals is how much better it would have been had they built the Trillium condos to the original 27 storey height. It would have looked a lot more interesting.

Trillium had a height reduction?!? Oh that makes me mad. :hell:

It is good, but they've bastardized the ends of those 3 wings on the left. I'm assuming they originally appeared like the wings on the other side.

Actually no, the wings have always been asymmetrical. The only change effected to my knowledge is the destruction of the chimney.

As evidenced in this photo:http://imtl.org/edifices/Universite-de-Montreal.php?id=57&im=9

^ Nice picture of the Battery.

Here are a few I took today from Pippy Park, looking down at MUN and out towards the ocean. This view is within walking distance of my house and I find that its an interesting perspective of the city, since most photos are from the harbour looking in towards St. John's.

Looking out towards the ocean, The Rooms and the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in the top left corner. Below those would be downtown St. John's.

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6569/dscf0956x.jpg

A larger view of the whole scene. Signal Hill is in the center of the photo.

Yes, and I use it often. It was no help in figuring out what a "terrasse" is, though. I'd thought maybe it was like terraced housing or raised platforms or something.

Royal Bank says it's closing its historic branch at 360 St. Jacques in Montreal at noon, July 13. Some history: http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/2010/06/23/royal-bank-abandons-historic-360-st-jacques-building/

^ No, RBC is just moving out to cut costs.

The owner of the building wants it to remain open to the public as much as possible, but considering the interior of the building is not protected (the exterior is), who knows what will happen. It was built to be a bank branch, so I can't see anything else going in there without removing the desks, etc.

In a perfect world, it could become the lobby/restaurant of a boutique hotel that would use some floors of the tower. The CIBC historic branch across the street is almost as nice... and closed for many many years. A real shame. Let's hope the amazing historic Bank of Montreal on Place d'Armes remains open forever.

Great photos! Did they impose any limitations? I took some at BofM down the street (lost in a hard drive crash) and they would only allow me to photograph outside of the main banking area.

In a perfect world, it would remain a bank. Given that RBC posted a profit of 1.56 billion last quarter, it's rather 'rich' that they're citing cost as a reason for closing this branch. Maybe they'll use the savings to build another POS generic (falling) glass box that'll begin crumbling 3 years after it opens.

Thanks! I went in on a weekend afternoon - probably the best time to go in there because there are no employees and few clients. They have to leave the branch open because the ATMs are inside. I was free to walk around and take as many pictures as I wanted. There was one security guard at the front desk, but he didn't seem to mind that I was taking a lot of pictures.

Although I remember going in there another time before, and part of it was roped off. I walked around the rope and the security guard told me to leave that section.
