I think it's downright retarded how many Starbucks downtown Phoenix has. I think I've been to one of them once in the last 6 years.

Interesting. I was only aware of one (Wyndham). If the find-a-Starbucks app on my phone works properly, there are 5 in the area inside surrrounded by I-10/I-17 and 3 of them appear to be serving as internal coffee shops at large places (City Hall, US Airways Center, etc.). That doesn't seem all that, um. retarded.

I think it would be cool if Phoenix had a nice coffee shop like Frasier and Niles go to in "Frasier". It seems like they're either a corporate chain like Starbucks, or a more hip/trendy local place. Where's the business casual local coffee shop?

It was supposed to be a Seattle's Best, but whatever opened on the west side of Phelps Dodge building is what you are describing.

Yes, that's City Central Coffee. "Business casual" is just the right way to describe it. It's on Central just across from the Central / Washington light rail station in the ground floor of the building Phelps Dodge used to be in.

When I lived in Seattle, there were little independently owned "Espresso Stands" everywhere.. they were little temporary shack type buildings with a drive thru and you'd see them everywhere from parking lots to random empty street corners... they served everything from coffee to smoothies to snacks, and some featured bikini-clad college girls working them or shirtless dudes..

I wish they could do that here to fill up some of the empty space downtown

Copper Star and its proprietor are awesome, and I go there on weekends. Unfortunately, I am a bicycle commuter so riding two miles out of my way for a cup of coffee is not really practical.

On the topic of Cityscape--is that Workbench place still there or is it gone? I know it was temporary, but they had a table I liked.

ok...first...I don't post here often...however, I do read and look at this sight. I think your pictuires you guys take...are great...apprecaite you continuing with the pics.

I am 400 miles away...sometimes...it is funny to see people right there...not know what is going on. ASU is NOT building a med school in downtown Phoenix. The UofA is. They do joint projects at T-Gen - next door.

No one seems to know if RED is going to continue building on top of the Palomar (Kimpton) Hotel. So, I called RED - and got ahold of a Keith Earnest. He indicated that he is the person that knows what is going on. He said that the hotel should be open by next April. As far as the continuation on top of the hotel: He said that there have been changes in their plans...however, they have settled on building multi-family (apartments) on top of the Palomar Hotel. Keith said that the design has changed since the original design...and that the building will top out at only about 23 floors - instead of the original 34 floors. Keith also said that there will be some lag time - like 3 months - when they start up on building the apartments...I lost him here a little - however, I think he said that the construction for the aprtments would begin later this year(?) I also lost him a little on the completion date...however, I believe he said the apartments would be ready by 2013. Whether this happens or not...that is what he said. if you want to call and talk to him - call Keith Earnest in RED's (Scottsdale?) office. His number has a 480 area code - so, I am figuring it is located in Scottsdale.

CenturyLink Inc. is expanding its marketing presence in the Valley, which now includes a massive advertisement on the side of CityScape in downtown Phoenix.

CenturyLink is continuing the transition in the Arizona from the Qwest Communications International Inc. properties it purchased earlier this year in a $22 billion deal.

Stretching about a dozen floors, the CityScape billboard features the a green Slinky that has been seen on numerous CenturyLink ads around the region. The ad was negotiated by Mullen Advertising, the Boston-based firm that has operations in Phoenix.

Adding space...and cutting back their evening hours. :/

Vitamin T adding space at CityScape in Phoenix
Date: Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 12:29pm MST
Related: Retailing & Restaurants, Food & Restaurants

Vitamin T will soon expand its footprint at CityScape in downtown Phoenix to add more indoor and outdoor seating.

CityScape’s urban taco shop, Vitamin T, is expanding its footprint at the downtown mixed use project and adding a breakfast menu.
Peder Bondhus, a partner in Vitamin T with Chef Aaron May, said the eatery will expand to its southern side to offer more indoor and outdoor seating.
“We’re pushing out a wall and we’re going to add about 300 square feet indoors. We will also be expanding our outdoor patio space,” Bondhus said.
Once finished, the restaurant will allow indoor seating for about 40 people. It only holds about 16 now.
While Vitamin T was designed as a take-out and casual diner, Bondhus said downtown patrons seem to want more traditional seating options.
“When we talked to our regulars, it seemed that some people were hesitant to come down during the summer and risk not getting a seat inside,” Bondhus said.
The project is expected to start within the next few weeks, with a goal of being completely finished by late October, Bondhus said.
Vitamin T Manager Pierce Azlin said that the restaurant is also going to add a breakfast menu and expand its morning hours.
Beginning Sept. 19, the restaurant will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
The menu will feature some coffee drinks, a yogurt bar, several breakfast burritos and some breakfast sandwiches.

Expanded morning hours is good news. Adding space just means you've lost one future restaurant option. I assume they'll be moving into the space that was supposed to be the public house?

I would assume that tacos would be a popular option among people out drinking downtown on weekends. There are existing dinner options, but nothing that serves the late crowd in the area. I wonder if there is a workable business solution that would allow for closing at 4p and reopening from 9p-1a on Fri and Sat or something along those lines.

A lot of businesses change their hours shortly after opening, I do however agree with all the posts. Their new hours make no sense. Vitamin T needs to be capitalizing on games/concerts/etc.

I went to Yogurtini tonight at about 7 and the place was empty BUT when I asked how their business was doing they said great during the day and after games. A taco/beer place seems like it would be gangbusters before and after a game. If I managed Vitamin T I would a some guy standing at all the exits to the DBacks Stadium and Suns Arena with a sign that said something like "avoid the traffic/eat some tacos"

On a side note - I went to Vitamin T for lunch recently and got the 3 tacos deal. The tacos were very good but tiny. It seemed more like a mid afternoon snack than an actual lunch.

I took a good look at the Hotel Palomar building today during lunch. It appears as if 10 floors are up with walls and windows and everything (including the bottom floors). The walls appear to be going higher though. The elevator core is one floor higher than the rest of the building and rebar is sticking out the top of the core.

Hey all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Yes, another PHX screen name. I've been living downtown for 6 years now and my building was involved in a few of the very preliminary meetings about CityScape....way back when they assured us the name wasn't going to be CityScape, that was just a "working" title.

Anyway, enough about me. Starbucks is moving into the space next to the Verizon store on the corner, across the walkway from Chipotle. The location in the Wyndham will be gone. Approximate opening is just after Thanksgiving last I heard.

The article says they are hiring for multiple locations in central Phoenix, but I'm also hoping/expecting that a CityScape location will have longer hours, including weekends, which would create a need for a larger workforce than the current location.

Cityscape tour "field trip"

The RED tour guide said that the Hotel will be done by early next year (February or March). Pool area will go above Tilted Kilt and there is an elevator by the "Live Nation" booth that will lead up to the pool cause they will have DJ's at the pool during weekends for the public.

The Apartments on top of the hotel will start construction in 2013 (14 stories, around 250 rooms).

They are going to add LED screens around the park and put one on the Hotel. For when there is concerts and DJ's, and have it so you can text a song request and it will show up on the screens.
He also mentioned about putting a solar shading canopies over the park.

Lastly, the third piece of land will start to be developed in 2015. One tower will be office and the other will be hotel/residential again. But he said they would like to get a big box store (they are thinking about getting Target, it would be 2 stories) under one of the towers while the other one has small shops, restaurants, and underground parking.

^ Your statement is entirely spurious, unless you have some magic crystal ball. Comments like that are flat out irritating because they add nothing to the discussion, people like you completely lack any authority on the matter, and it wholeheartedly discounts anything that points to the project's completion.

When we let the facts of the matter speak for themselves, this is not the first time we have heard about the third block being developed in 2015. The third block is owned by Colliers and we know the glacial pace they work at. The fact that they are progressing in its programming suggests that they're not fucking around. The reason the 3rd block didn't happen before was due to the economy's evaporation and the condo market blowing up and the development partner Cardon going bankrupt. Office and hotel and rental residential are in considerable demand downtown.

A 2-story Target seems the only fanatical part of the deal. Although it would be perfect for that site to complement the existing retail mix, the "they would like" suggests it's a longshot. There needs to be far more higher-class residential than the throws of poverty in the surrounding area to support that kind of intensive shopping.

Too bad Arizona Center never got an anchor besides the AMC24. I wonder if the first [insert major department store here] in the state would have given that place lasting power.

HooverDam
Oct 12, 2011, 12:47 PM
I'll bet they're aiming for a "City Target" which are often two stories, have a smaller footprint & fit well in urban spaces. It would be a great addition to Downtown. I really hope those LED signs happen and cover the huge swaths of ugly greyness at CityScape.

As far as a 2nd anchor at the Az Center, Id love to see the oversized AMC cut back to 16 or so screens and the left over space used for an office supply store. Its ridiculous that the biggest concentration of office workers in the state don't have any access to a Staples/Office Max/Office Depot.

Sean you know I'm right. Stop whining about it. I've been right most of the time when calling this kind of stuff out. Target? I'll believe it when I see it.

Target would be great and perhaps it will happen, but let's not forget it was first discussed back in the 2004-2005 time frame in the area around Van Buren and 2 or 3rd Ave if I remember correctly and has yet to happen. Maybe by 2015 the time will be right. Also don't forget about the "almost a done deal" late last year for two hotels to go on the extra block next to CityScape. Also, the two extra towers of CityScape that were a done deal back in 2006....until construction began. Did anyone else attend the dog and pony show at US Airways Center touting the size of CityScape way back when? There's been a lot "planned" for that space and yet it's currently a parking lot. I have a hard time believing we will still have a surface lot there in 4 years, but I can't believe anything they say about what will be there until the final beam is put in place.

I think a Target is a longshot there anyways.

Collier--it's a company now, he's been dead for many years--is well known to develop slow. But why would they develop *anything* in Midtown with office demand so low up there?

You realize a lot has changed since Collier Center was built. Their block was always slated for a 750-room hotel. Since then the City has built the Sheraton and RED has come on the scene, a developer that doesn't have their head up their ass when it comes to programming and design, at least compared to Collier Center.

Collier has probably also realized the City is willing to give away the farm when it comes to tax incentives, so they probably have no problem waiting for their original GPLET to expire while demand grows for that 750-room hotel that's always supposed to have gone there, and then they'll just get another GPLET to build what they were supposed to in the beginning when the time is right.

CityScape is a much better development to tie into in the meantime than their crappy block anyways.

I had no idea...the owner of that block has never been a serious developer if it's the abandoned tire store one I'm thinking about.

Maybe by 2015 the time will be right. Also don't forget about the "almost a done deal" late last year for two hotels to go on the extra block next to CityScape.

I have a feeling the timing is more important to Collier than the programming. I seem to recall they skipped the last boom and have a tendency to build when nobody else is. Maybe they also realized it would be retarded to build two 500 room hotels when they have their own hotel parcel to think about on the original block. Or maybe they couldn't find two hotel companies willing to compete with each other on the same block.

Also, the two extra towers of CityScape that were a done deal back in 2006....until construction began. An urban Target probably isn't a bad thing to chase for that site. While Target's normal 'target' demographic probably isn't quite there just yet, the fastest growing demographic in the area (students) is right in their wheelhouse.

Add to that a sizeable nearby area of the city (South Phoenix) that isn't really served by anything similar (not even a Wal-Mart or K-Mart that I can recall). And this is alot closer than 7th and Camelback.

Of course parking will have to be free (though that can easily be dealt with through purchase validations).

But I agree with Sean. The Arizona Center would be a MUCH superior location for a downtown Target.

Isn't there a K-Mart somewhere along Baseline between Central and 7th Ave? I'm pretty sure Target is on Baseline around 16th St. Neither really serves downtown, but they certainly serve South Phoenix.

We have one on Cactus Rd & 32nd St. Isn't K-Mart closed for good? We have Target in Desert Ridge Marketplace.

From the Arizona Republic:

Oakville Grocery booted by Phoenix CityScape had trail of financial woes
by Kristena Hansen - Oct. 15, 2011 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic

Barely 3 1/2 months ago, Oakville Grocery Co. at CityScape in downtown Phoenix welcomed its first customers, who walked through its doors hungry for lunch, snacks, gourmet groceries, coffee and pastries.

But the successful launch apparently masked behind-the-scenes financial turmoil.

The grocery store's owner and operator, Michael A. Webb, recently was booted by CityScape's developer, RED Development LLC, which has taken over the grocery.

The space now is being leased by RED to prominent restaurateur Sam Fox and Kierland Commons' market owner, Ashly Young, who plan to partner on a gourmet market called Chloe's Corner, according to a statement issued by RED Development on Friday.

Well that was quick...but it doesn't sound like the grocery was the actual problem, though I guess if it were doing phenomenal then he'd have money to pay his bills.

Now the new spot...Chloe's Corner? Really that's the best they could come up with? Why not keep grocery in the name? Or are they planning to transition away from grocery?

It's very bittersweet. Oakville sucked some serious ass, and the staff were all a bunch of bags of dicks whenever I went in there, but it would have been nice to keep the place around. I purchased from there twice, once a cup of coffee, and the other time a six pack of beer.

Funny story when I went to get the coffee, I wanted a pack of gum too, but it was $2.49 if I remember correctly. I went next door to CVS and got the same gum for like $1.19.

This could be a good thing, maybe RED can orient Chloe's Corner to sell products geared towards DT's demographics.

I hope it doesnt turn into something similar to the Chloe's Corner at Kierland.

Never been there. What's the issue?

Its basically a restaurant that has a few items and its more a place to be seen than a place to buy crap. The square footage at Cityscape is much larger though so hopefully they can make this work. From the sound of it, it looks like they are going to leave all employees and products and phase in a new management group (Fox Concepts).

If you're, what, $10 million behind in various bills, there's only so many niche jars of mustard you can sell to cover that. It seems he couldn't shelter his liabilities and the closing of the other stores brought this one down as well.

I am not in an I-Phone. Sad but true. If I was, I would be posting away. I was one of the last holdouts for a cell phone. My current phone does not have internet. Too cheap to pay for it.....cause i would use it way toooooo much and never get anything done.

I sure hope the Starbucks is ready for the ice rink. Would be awesome to sip hot chocolate or Pumpkin Spiced latte' and watch skaters.

Anyone know of or how to find what Christmas stuff will be occurring? MOST IMPORTANT....will there actually be a decent sized tree this year? :)

Sam Fox details new CityScape restaurant replacing Oakville Grocery
Phoenix Business Journal by Lynn Ducey, Reporter
Date: Monday, October 17, 2011, 2:41pm MST

Sam Fox says his new effort at Downtown’s CityScape project won’t pull business from his Arrogant Butcher restaurant also located in the mixed-use retail center.

The founder and CEO of Fox Restaurant Concepts, Fox is entering into a business partnership with Ashly Young on Chloe’s Corner in CityScape. It will occupy what has been Oakville Grocery, which was shut down by CityScape developers.

Young currently owns and operates Chloe’s Corner at Kierland Commons, which offers a range of sandwiches and food items to shoppers there.

In an exclusive interview with the Phoenix Business Journal, Sam Fox said that the space will undergo renovations and a remodel, and offer something significantly different than his Arrogant Butcher restaurant a block away.

...

“We are going to add more components. We are going to turn it into a place where you want to go and have a beer, have a glass of wine. We are going to install some garage doors, get a big counter in the middle. It’s going to be a lot more urban than what Oakville was,” Fox said.

I hope what he means by that is "we're going to open up an entrance to the street"
