Great photos. Midtown Atlanta has some of my favorite individual building designs anywhere. I don't care how dense it is though, it still has light years to go before it can be truly wonderful, vibrant, and successful as a built urban environment.

atlanta underrated as it starts going vertical.

Thanks everybody, In defense of Atlanta, the city is developed, but the trees cover up everything under 2 stories, especially from the angles these photos are taken from. They don't have towers sticking out of the trees, but they do have very low rise, typical single family homes, apartments and stripmalls with towers right next to them. In that sense, Atlanta is sort of odd, but not really any different than Dallas, Houston, Phoenix or even Denver, Minneapolis etc.
Here are some more pics of the areas north of Downtown, the next part will be Downtown. Enjoy...:)

The mountain is actually Kennesaw Mountain, I'm pretty sure. It's NW of Atlanta. Stone Mountain is east. They are about the same height though.
...you can see Stone Mountain clearly in the last picture of the first post, just above the Four Seasons.

No, it's definitely not Kennesaw Mountain. Kennesaw's silhouette is very distinctive (see 6th pic up in first set looking southwest from Lenox) and I see it almost everyday, so I'd know it. The peak in question is pratically due-north of Midtown (Kennesaw is not visible unless you are looking west-northwest from Midtown), possibly in North Fulton or Forsyth County.
Notice it's visible again in the Perimeter Center pic (9th down in the first set) and it's a lot closer. I'll probably google it...

I have to wonder if some of those people that are "baffled" or don't "get it" are thrown off by the amazing canopy of trees in Atlanta. To someone that is unfamiliar with the city, looking at these pictures may give the impression that Atlanta is nothing more than a few clusters of skyscrapers surrounded by a forest.
Hundreds of thousands of people LIVE under that canopy of trees. We're talking very TALL trees here, so their homes are not visible in these overhead photos.
People sometimes say that Atlanta has no single, distinguishing characteristic that sets it apart from other business-oriented cities. Absolutely not true!
You'd be hard-pressed to find another major urban area in the USA that can rival Atlanta's verdant, lush landscape.

Atlanta's layout is definetly different from alot of big cities.
It appears to have 2 downtowns (downtown and midtown) that arent really that close to each other. it sorta looks like 2 sections of building with trees in between.
But I think Atlanta has the potential to grow and look more like an Asian city with alot of buildings and how everything there is modern compared to alot of older cities.

There aren't a bunch of trees between Midtown and Downtown.
If you are basing that on the photos then I can understand that but these photos are of Buckhead, Perimeter Center and a couple of upper Midtown with none of Downtown. The photo that shows all the trees is in Buckhead looking southward towards Midtown and Downtown. There is a sizeable stretch between Buckhead and the rest of the core however but it is all confined within the city limits.
In terms of the layout of Atlanta, yes it is different. It is probably more linear than most cities.

KC....did you intentionally align the under-construction crown of Terminus seen in the foreground of photo 16 with the horizon? I just noticed that they are at precisely the same horizontal. Pretty cool! Also, for those of you not as familiar with Atlanta, this tower will be Buckhead's tallest, but only for a short while, since there are two other towers in Buckhead under construction already which will both be taller.

Yeah, not so much their style and design, but that there's more than one area of commerce (L.A. has Downtown, Century City, Wilshire, etc and Atlanta has Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead). With as notoriously spread out as both cities are, its actually better planning to have more than one central business district.

Wow, looks like Buckhead rivals Bellevue for the title of "most construction in a non-central mixed-use business district in the US". (I can see arguments coming!)
Midtown has fantastic examples of relatively-new buildings that are well designed with classic architectural styles. Meaning the pointy ones. I'm jealous of those, and also the use of brick.
I love the trees.

not light years. maybe a decade. (talking midtown here) the amount of projects planned for the district is astounding, and there is a very conclusive plan for the years ahead. you have it backwards - it's not very dense, yet, but it is becoming more and more successful as an urban environment, daily. i really don't need to say much else.
buckhead suprised me just a little here. it's really becoming a third cbd - especially once the village and the mall area grow together more.
thanks for these photos, and i'm really looking forward to your downtown set.

mhays...locals call that the "downtown connector". I-75 arrives from the northwest and heads out of town to the southeast, and I-85 arrives from the northeast and heads out of town to the southwest, and they are joined together as I-75/85 through Midtown and Downtown.

These are fantastic shots. It makes me think "god, I'd love to live there" and then I remember, "oh, I do live here" :D . From the ground level, it's not quite as impressive as what we see here; there aren't a lot of terrific vantage points from which to take in the city (there are a few, but you have to be travelling 70mph and that's not condusive to taking long, appreciative looks). The city is definitely improving, however, and if mass transit accompanies increasing density, I think Atlanta will be a cool place in about 10 years.

Beautiful pictures!
One unfortunate distinguishing characteristic of suburban Atlanta is the predominance of curvy, loopy streets in the suburban areas, which are filled with homes on huge lots. In this respect it is nothing like LA--LA is linear and dense with tiny yards throughout the metro. I don't think there's one straight street in suburban Atlanta. The reason probably has to do with most recent development patterns as opposed to LA's old postwar planning.

Is there really a grid even within the city of Atlanta? Not that I'm some sort of expert on the city, but driving around Atlanta I noticed most of the streets curve. It was one of the most confusing American cities to navigate IMO.
You're right about Atlanta not being like LA. I meant to respond to this comment in my previous post. I don't get how the two are even compared, there are very few similarities I found. In fact I found Dallas and Atlanta resemble each other more than any other cities. Just so I don't get any backlash about Dallas & Atlanta. The two aren't exactly alike and have many differences, but the two are closer to being alike than LA & Atlanta will ever be.

Is there really an grid even withing the city of Atlanta? Not that I'm some expert on this city, but driving around Atlanta I noticed most of the streets curve. It was one of the most confusing cities American cities to navigate IMO.
There is a small existing grid in inner city Atlanta.

Let me clarify my statement. I did not mean to imply that they looked alike.
They both sprawl forever.
They both are largely car-dependent and have horrible traffic.
They both have several "downtowns", so to speak.
They are both the predominant cities in their regions in terms of commerce and culture.
They are both growing rapidly and are magnets for people from other parts of the country.
Development seems to be very linear along major arteries, i.e. Wilshire Blvd. and Peachtree Rd.
Obviously, the two cities are quite different in many ways, but some of the similarities are quite striking in my opinion.
As a matter of fact, when an LA local asked where I was visiting from, she laughed and said, "Oh yeah, I've been to Atlanta many times. LA's kinda like a bigger version of Atlanta with palm trees".
An oversimplification, for sure, but apparently even she sees some similarities.

Absolutely. I've lived in Atlanta most of my life and I've traveled to most other large US metros, LA included, countless times. LA "feels" like a supersized Atlanta to me, more so than any other metro in the country.

Thanks KC for those remarkable extra downtown pics!! You sure made home sweet home look great! That new first photo is spectacular! It's clear from that picture that the lines between Downtown and Midtown are blurring, and you can easily follow the buildings lining Peachtree Street curving up to the northeast and leading to the Buckhead skyline. And, it was clear enough that day to also see the mini-skyline of Perimeter Center in the distant background!

I'm sorry still I have to disagree, just like some folks from Atlanta said its like NY, and we all know thats not true. Between the two cities, yes I would say its closer to being like LA. Yet really the only thing both have in common is their metro sprawls pretty far out, but thats any big american city today. A big difference is Atlanta is mostly low density sprawl, and LA is dense both in the city and even its surburbs (many have higher density than the city of Atlanta). We don't have homes with lots as big as what I've seen in Atlanta. There are more mutil-family units here in LA, and other than a few areas 95% of the city have sidewalks in its residental neighborhoods. Again I found it closer to Dallas and how its built. These two cities felt more alike, it was my first thoughts about Atlanta, similar to Dallas.
Anyway we are all entitled to our opinions, and I respect that. Hope you all have a good day. :)

so...what the hell is my picture doing on Imageshack when i didn't upload it? who's taking my credit? who's so rude they can't ask (or post it from the original URL?) :hell:
anyway, these great pics are making me feel dirty. like i want to move to the ATL. where i'd probably bitch about how it was more fun around 2000, before gentrification revved up. when Ear Wax was in an old garage (i think,) lots of clubs of all kinds around midtown.
if/when the masquerade goes under for damned dirty condos it'll be a dirty, sad day...unless it reopens in another unique spot.

i'm an atlanta resident who just found this thread!
i noticed when reading through it that there were many comments - almost complaints - about how it looks like skyscrapers sticking up out of the forest...like they are dissapointed you can't see the whole city thats unfolding underneath the trees...i don't find that dissapointing, i find it wonderful, as someone who lives in the historic part of midtown thats under those trees! in fact, the incredible tree canopy covering everything is one of the best parts of atlanta...it may not make an interesting and beautiful aerial photograph, but it makes for some really beautiful and interesting neighborhoods when you're walking around in them..which is, of course, how'd you'd experience them. (not up in the air.)
its lovely, though, to see my city like that!

Wow, i'm used to seeing the Westin looking silver and reflective. Being able to see right through the windows to the curtains makes it look like the building was recently hit by a tornado or something. lol

Or maybe they should use jet-black curtains? That way it would look more seamless from any angle.

I love that pic of Georgia Tech's football field. That is such a cool looking stadium. My sister is an Agnes Scott grad so she made me a Jacket fan. Would love to catch a night game there to see the midtown views.
