To me that fits perfectly into the fabric of your city. Nicely done.

Thanks guys!

Ohh I like those two buildings on the very right, they got names yet?

Haha, I have so many buildings that I've just stopped even trying to come up with names. :P

fox- I gotta be honest, I don't like the football stadium in it'd present location it seems to big and bulky in its location to me.

But I love the originality, there's no city that comes close in that term.

I actually don't really like the stadium there either to be honest. I'm just really stumped on where to put it, and better yet, on what I would put to replace it on the waterfront. I still have a TON of work to do all around it, so I'll leave it there for now and see if I can make it look any better. Thanks for the honest opinion though, it really helps.

I gotta agree with Austin, plus, where do people park?

Ah, maybe in time it'll look better with some landscaping around it!

I really like the "stepped" resort next to the stadium. It's complex, it's got a tinge of a certaing L.A. Hotel, and I just want to dip in that pool (could you post a shot from the pool looking towards the scrapers?)
Good choice on continuing the waterfront. IT's esential.
OH I also like that other hotel (the smaller blue one), but you should place it next to the water, it's like hidden in there.

I've been extremely busy recently and I also haven't had the patience to try to work on the waterfront at all, but I've been working on this building for the past few days. I just installed Kerkythea on this computer so I still have to mess around and figure out how to export models the right way, but this is just a sloppy rendering I made:

Some more messing with Kerkythea. The new version is kind of confusing with the reflections, so I'm still trying to figure that out. I know this isn't the most exciting building but it's just a test.

And everyone's old-time favorite:

And just an awesome shot I found on my computer that I never uploaded before:

I downloaded the old Kerkythea, so I figured out all the reflections and stuff again. I've just been rendering like crazy for the past few days, so I have some good ones. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with Palm Dunes; it's really big and really unorganized. I'm considering just completely starting over, using most of the same buildings (scrapping the crappy ones) and designing an entirely different layout. I might forget the peninsula thing and try more of just a long beachfront style. But the whole idea is new so who knows what I might end up doing, if I do it.

You know,Just go for it. start almost over. look at SF's recent transformation. I cant Imagine ow PD could turn out.

those towers are super sexy and slick:cool:

Patrick
Jul 13, 2008, 6:40 PM
I think a start over is plausible, every old Sketchup City here has started over a few times, each time only improving, Palm Dunes has had the same layout since 2006 if I'm not mistaken.

Aleks

Woahh! Those renderings are awesome. And that new building looks great next to the tallest, which are my favorite. The only thing that's weird is that the smaller tower has a helicopter pad which would be a little hard to get approval from the city to put on because of all the buildings around it. But everything else is great.

That last rendering is great. Did you change the settings much for that?

Hey guys, I haven't completely fallen off the face of the earth. :haha: I never have much time to play with SketchUp these days as I'm too busy enjoying my summer, but I have been slowly making progress in redoing Palm Dunes. After looking at malec's lessons, I've been messing around with components and arrays. I've decided to start rebuilding all of the buildings that will make it to PD2, making each window and floor and such. I'm only on my first building and it takes quite some time to do this, but here's a sneak peek:

Old ==> New

I'll add floors once the walls are complete.

I decided I'd swing by and give a little update while I'm on the site. I'm almost done with my first quarter here at Cal Poly, and it's been pretty busy. I have two design classes, a drawing/modeling class and a digital class. We've been drawing lots of objects and building abstract models in the first class. Right now we're cutting pieces out of books and building off of them with wood. It's kinda hard to explain exactly what we're doing but it's cool. In the digital class, we're learning simple stuff like Photoshop and Illustrator, but we're also building 3D models in FormZ. It's kinda weird using a different 3D program after using SketchUp for so long; it's like I'm starting all over again. FormZ is a much more powerful program and it has lots of crazy tools, but I haven't really made anything too great yet haha. Hopefully when I have time over Christmas break, I should be able to work on Palm Dunes a little bit. I miss it.

So I can animate stuff in FormZ... I don't mean like making videos in SketchUp, I mean I can actually make objects move. Hmm... oh the possibilities...

Video game? :hyper:

I made a driving course with a sketchyphysics enabled car. it uses cones that move, it fully steerable, the hood/trunk/doors open,ETC. it didnt work with a few blocks of trinity city though, to much info to handle.

I feel extremely stupid posting this. I am a Sketchup rookie. I got the program a couple years ago and am now building cities with it. I've had a lot of trouble with texturizing buildings and actually making complex buildings with accurate floor counts and heights. After working on a massive, but extremely poorly detailed and unrealistic city with what has probably 100+ buildings, I've decided to make a very small city with more detail. I don't want to waste anyone's time but does anyone have any tips. By the way, Palm Dunes and all these other Sketchup cities are just amazing. Thanks!
