Heads up to those of you who are interested.
Radar is indicating some very heavy showers moving up from the south sound at around 25-30 mph and there are some T-storms imbedded within this heavy rain band.
Be prepared for some serious downpours, gusty winds, brief hail, and possibly some lightning.
NWS may issue a SWS ( severe weather statement ) soon as this band is intensifying and moving north into the I-5 corridor.

moosanova
06-29-2007, 06:07 AM
No SWS was ever issued, the main band fell apart before it reached seattle, but don't worry, our chances for T-storms goes up tomorrow, ( friday ) to at least 60%
Tomorrow is looking better anyways as the showers will be more intermittent and allow alot more sunshine to break through allowing extended ground warming to occur.
So keep your eyes peeled, tomorrow could be an interesting day Kids!!!!

Notice: I will now start posting daily forecasts for the seattle metro area beginning on monday July 2nd for those of you who are interested.
Now on to some interesting developments occuring today ( June 29th )
1. Latest Models are showing a well defined shortwave starting to move onshore this morning and will start to impact the Metro area around 1-2 pm.
This shortwave is associated with the upper level low that is still spinning off our coast and was the culprit for our showers yesterday and will be the main driving force behind today's LIKELY T-Storm activity.
Instability associated with the shortwave is very sufficient and the dynamic support ahead of the shortwave will be strong.
This basically means that the air mass currently over us is strong and is prime to support Thunderstorms today.
2. As i said in an earlier post about the coming 4th of July holiday and beyond being warm to hot, well that point is still valid but with one major tweak.
It now appears likely that the Thermal Low that is set to move north along the west coast and set up shop will do sooner and faster than first thought.
I had forecasted temps only being in the low to mid 80's on Wednesday and Thursday, Now i am fairly certain that beginning on Monday we will see temps. start to soar upwards and beyond.
My new forecasted temps are as follows
Monday Upper 70's to Low 80's
Tuesday Mid to Upper 80's
Wednesday ( 4th of July ) Upper 80's to Low to Mid 90's
Some areas outside of the immediate metro area could push close to 100 on Wednesday
Thursday appears to be the Hottest so far this year with temps as follows......Mid 90's to close to 100F
Friday onward temps dip a bit but only into the Mid to Upper 80's for most if not all of Western Washington.
Hope you guys are ready for some real summer weather, because it's about to drop in and stay around for awhile.
Enjoy ! ! !

Now I *really* want snow. :(
I can't wait until October.
BTW, in 2 weeks I'm going to my sister's wedding in North Carolina. I haven't been back east *in the summer* since I left NC in 1988 (though I've been there many times around Christmas). It'll be interesting to see how the heat AND humidity feels after not having experienced it in 19 years!

I have to make a revision as the coming holiday and beyond is now looking not nearly as hot here on the west side of the state.
I had posted that temps strting on Tuesday would be in the upper 80's to low 90's.
Well now i have to back off that as the models are indicating some slight cooling in advance of the Thermal low thus holding our temps back to the low to mid 80's on tuesday, and wednesday.
But then we do get close to 90 on thursday and friday as the thermal low basically parks itself over us.
The reason we won't get very hot is because of the High Pressure east of us is slightly weakening and thus won't generate the strong downsloping winds from eastern washington to our area thus increasing our temps like it normally does.
Nonetheless though we will be warm and VERY SUNNY starting tomorrow and through at least the next 2 weeks.
Temps will be steady between the upper 70's to mid 80's after this little bout with some heat.
Be happy though as humidity levels will be low through the extended period.

no offense moosanova, you seem like a nice guy, but why are you posting Seattle's forecast? I mean, I know these pages find themselves waaay off topic, but the weather is a fairly easy thing to find on several pages like http://www.king5.com/weather/index.html or http://www.komotv.com/weather and even if you are in a Portland mood you have http://www.kgw.com/weather/?tn. Not to be a smart ass or anything, but this thread has been fun to read about peoples usually humorous takes on the weather, but what's with the Seattle report?
moosanova
07-03-2007, 03:48 PM
No offense to you Mark, But people other than you actually like to read what i have to write, but if it pleases you then i will stop posting any weather related topics of any sort as i know some people just can't tolerate it.
By the way, you're the only one to complain about my forecasting.
And yes there are other resources for weather in the seattle, but when people actually look forward to what i have to write about the weather that should indicate to you that you are the minority in the matter unless others come forward with the same issue in which case i will gladly stop.
Like i said no offense to you or your opinion, but one voice of opposition is more than likely not going to affect this issue you may have with me.
Side note: this is the first time in a long time that i have seen a post from you in this particualr thread.

^okay, seems you took that waaay to personally. I just thought posting detailed weather information in a blog about skyscrapers was a bit odd, but whatever floats you boat...and I certainly don't want to end a 'public service' you have been providing other Seattle peeps, since the network news weather seems to be hardly accurate...especially trying to distinguish between partly cloudy and mostly sunny...but whatever, wasn't puttin you down.
Side note: I've posted close to 4000 posts and have read considerably more threads than that, just cause I don't post doesn't mean I'm not enjoying the banter.

The topic of this thread is................

MarkDaMan
07-03-2007, 05:10 PM
Fair enough, but if I posted a thread called 'the northwest river level thread' it still wouldn't have anything to do with buildings, cityscape, or urban design...and as I said before, there are a lot of things I have posted, or read, that doesn't have to do directly about buildings. But this Notice: I will now start posting daily forecasts for the seattle metro area beginning on monday July 2nd for those of you who are interested.
caught my eye as something that could potentially overwhelm the half hearted comments left occasionally from people belly aching about the weather, which is actually quite humorous. But whatever...like I said, I'm not perse against anything you are doing, but your posts will turn this into the Seattle weather thread as opposed to a NW weather thread which in turns, kinda seems like a hijacking of the thread.
If you are really interested in tracking the weather daily, I think a personal blog or journal would more appropriately fit the hobby you are interested in. But, whatever, I'll just move onto the next thread, I couldn't actually give a shit less.
moosanova
07-03-2007, 05:44 PM
Ok, can we agree to disagree? Good.
But i must add my two cents here.
Yes this thread is called The Northwest Weather Thread, and Yes Seattle is part of the Northwest, how does that whole or in part constitute me hijacking this particular thread???
And if someone from portland asked me in this thread to forecast for their area, would that also constitute a hijacking????
Seems to me you have a hidden agenda here Dude!!!!!
I'm leaving it at that, and i'm sure there are a lot of members who will agree with me.
And furthermore i am a certified meteorologist and if people ask me weather related questions in a weather thread that by god i am going to participate as i am not violating any terms as far as the site TOS goes, and if i were don't you think the Mod's would have done something by now.
and here's another thing, there are other sections on this site where you can post pics of cities in which no building is visible or other threads where people don't talk about buildings at all, so i ask this, what bug crawled up your butt this morning and why did you feel it necessary to throw me under the bus????
MarkDaMan

...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER EXPECTED THIS WEEK...
HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT WILL BUILD OVER THE REGION THIS WEEK... GENERATING MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES...ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES...AND LOWER THAN NORMAL HUMIDITIES. AFTERNOON HIGH TEMPERATURES WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY ARE FORECAST TO BE IN 70S TO MID 80S IN THE LOWLANDS WITH SOME 90S POSSIBLE IN SHELTERED VALLEYS OF THE CASCADES. ALONG WITH THESE ELEVATED TEMPERATURES WILL COME LOW HUMIDITY VALUES...EVEN AT NIGHT OVER PORTIONS OF THE CASCADES.
THESE CONDITIONS WILL COMBINE TO LEAD TO AN INCREASED FIRE DANGER SITUATION THIS WEEK...ESPECIALLY IN EXPOSED GRASSY AREAS. INDIVIDUALS NEED TO BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS DURING THIS HOLIDAY WEEK WITH FIREWORKS AND OUTDOOR CAMPFIRES AS FINE FUELS... DEFINED AS DRIED GRASS...TWIGS AND PINE NEEDLES...WILL BE DRY ENOUGH BY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON TO EASILY IGNITE.
ALTHOUGH A LARGE PART OF THE REASON FOR THE ENHANCED FIRE DANGER THIS WEEK IS DUE TO THE EXPECTED WARM AND DRY WEATHER...ANOTHER CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IS THE BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL EXPERIENCED ACROSS THE REGION THIS SPRING. EVEN THOUGH WE WERE QUITE WET LAST FALL AND WINTER...WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE MONTHS OF APRIL...MAY AND JUNE...PRELIMINARY FIGURES INDICATE THAT WE ARE RUNNING ABOUT 25 PERCENT BELOW NORMAL. LESS RAINFALL DURING THE SPRING MONTHS ALLOWS THE FUELS TO DRY OUT EARLIER AND MORE THOROUGHLY THAN WOULD NORMALLY BE THE CASE BY EARLY JULY.

Current models indicate as follows.
This weekend onshore flow increases slightly allowing more marine stratus to invade the inland areas but they won't last long as the lower levels are just to dry to allow for prolonged cloud cover, although areas olong the coast could see some drizzle possible particularly along the northern coastal areas.
I.E. La Push, Forks and Neah Bay
Next week a thermal trough ( Warm Low ) will already be in place and drive our temps upward as offshore flow will be strong and allow for downsloping winds off the cascades thus increasing our daytime temps once we hit tuesday and beyond.
Models have been indicating since last monday at this impending heat event, temps will begin to close in on the 90 Degree mark, most areas ( seattle metro included ) will be in the 88-92 degree range by wednesday and it will be more than likely that most of W. Wash. will be 90 or above on Thursday and Friday as the thermal Low really sets in.
We then beging to cool off significantly by the following Sunday and Monday as temps fall back all the way into the mid 70's for highs with morning marine clouds and variable sunshine.
This is one instance where the weather channel is pretty dead on with their forecast for our area, although most of the time they are not.
get ready as this will be the HOTTEST temps we have seen so far this year.

WEst seattle guy what did I tell you about the weather channel? Seems like you were off a little moosanova on Thursdays high temps in the 90s! Otherwise good forecast.
As far as thunderstorms go, the marine push was to strong last night. It will likely kill the prospect of having thunderstorms.. If we are lucky we will get into the mid 80s today.
moosanova
07-12-2007, 08:02 PM
Thus the basis of weather forecasting Mtn.
It is not an exact science, most times we can pinpoint what is going to happen, however in this instance the thermal trough was not as strong thus inhibiting another excruciating hot day.
And the fact that the marine push came in sooner than first thought is not going to prevent any thunderstorms ( Dry in Nature ) to form today or tommorrow as the trough has pushed east of the cascades but is still a major player as you have to different air masses in play.
Albeit, it felt great to wake up with a chill this morning but nevertheless, it's instances like this that make you really appreciate summer around here, even if it is 98 degrees outside.
I know i'm not being all that informative today but i have a killer headache from the heat and can't really think straight, so forgive me.

STORM TOTALS IN THE OLYMPICS AND NORTH CASCADES COULD BE AS HIGH AS TWO TO FOUR INCHES OF RAIN...WITH ONE OR TWO INCHES OF RAIN POSSIBLE ACROSS PARTS OF THE LOWLANDS.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE COULD ISSUE A FLOOD WATCH FOR THIS EVENT ON SATURDAY.
-I check the National Weather Service in Portland and no warnings for heavy rain were out.
-hmmmmm............. Looks like a winter like storm is on it's way to the NW.

1-2 inches of rain? Rivers on the rise? In ... July?

Look out your window this weekend and it might feel like November has come a few months early.
The unusually hot weather that made headlines earlier this month has turned unusually rainy as the National Weather Service is predicting 1 to 2 inches of rain in the Seattle area, and the possibility of local rivers flooding.
To make matters worse, the rain promises to drop attendance and spirits at various local festivals and events, Seattle Center's annual Bite of Seattle included.
The Darrington Bluegrass Festival and the Seafair Indian Days Pow Wow also are this weekend.
The forecast calls for heavy rain to roll into the Seattle area tonight, dumping 1 to 2 inches in the lowlands and perhaps even more in the mountains. The Olympic Peninsula could get the worst of it, with up to 5 inches in the mountains there.
"It's kind of hard to say now about how much rain is going to fall," said weather-service meteorologist Johnny Burg. "We're not going to issue any kind of flood watch until maybe [Saturday]."
The average daily rain at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for July is about .02 inches, or about .79 inches for the entire month. An inch of rain would certainly be record-breaking, Burg said.
At Olympic National Park, rangers will monitor weather conditions throughout the weekend, and park officials recommend visitors check in at ranger stations when they arrive, said Barb Maynes, a park spokeswoman.
Maynes said people should be cautious, check weather patterns before they arrive, and not try to cross swollen creeks or rivers.
This is one of the busiest times of the year for Olympic National Park. More than 427,000 visits were recorded in July 2006.
There was "some flooding in August a number of years ago," Maynes said. "It's very unusual; July is typically one of our driest months."
The rain might be remnants of Typhoon Man-Yi, which lashed Japan last week, Burg said.
This weekend's forecast is the latest in what is becoming an unusually wet July in Western Washington.
For the month, Olympia has recorded 50 percent more rainfall than normal.
Rainfall at Sea-Tac is about average, but the weather service expects this weekend's rains to push the monthly total above average.
Burg suggests staying inside this weekend unless you're "a glutton for punishment and you like sloshing around in the mud. Personally, I would say, wait until next weekend; next weekend looks a lot better."

Hey guys, for those of you who are interested, i am posting a preliminary forecast for the coming winter here in the Pac Nw........ Key Word being
" Preliminary "
Due to previous cycles and statistical data, here is what i am forecasting for the coming '07-'08 winter season.
One thing that is noticeable to me is that the ENSO is Active, The Pacific SST's ( Sea Surface Temperature ) are cooling rapidly as well as a weak La Nina is developing.
Typically in neutral years we receive on average 7 snow days or ( 2-4 ) lowland snow events and average between 15-40 subfreezing temperature days.
( that is for the entire winter season )
However, during a weak or moderate La Nina Year, those numbers double.
Seeing as how we are heading into a weak la nina i expect the following.
Specifically here in the Pacific Nw i expect the following to occur....
Significant lowland snow events, extended to prolonged periods of below average temperatures, increased wind activity and just an overall winter worse than the one we just previously experienced.
This forecast is not based off my personal wishes but moreso off of cyclic data and yearly averages between La Nina and El Nino events......
Stay tuned as this will be updated with better certainty as the winter months approach.

-I'm excited!!! I can already tell that the seasons are starting to change. Our low temperatures for the day are decreasing. It was in the low 50's last night at my house, which is unusual for summer.
-This winter I hope we get a week of off and on snow. That would be great. :P

Incidentally, is it me, or, aside from a few relatively brief warm spells, has this been a cloudier and cooler summer than usual?
Not that I'm complaining.

So i was on my way home very early this morning from E. Wash via the NCH ( North Cascades Highway ) and low and behold once i reached the summit of Sherman Pass ( Elv. 5776 ft, a rain/snow mix began to fall, and as i progressed even further west over the summit it came down even harder and eventually turned to all snow, and lasted for approx. 10 mins before abruptly ceasing and clearing up......
Now in the 16 years i have lived in W. Washington i have never seen it snow this early, EVER ! !!
Could it have been a sign of our upcoming winter???
Possibly, as we are in the midst of a Moderate La Nina and with SST's coolling rapidly anything is possible....... and i have reason to believe so as other parts of the north are experiencing early signs of winter's approach....
Northern maine this past week was under heavy freeze warnings, and some areas of the catskills are already leafless or in the late stages of color......
We shall soon see.......

Northern lights tonight? Maybe, if it's clear, after midnight
By Sanjay Bhatt
Seattle Times staff reporter
Sky gazers in Washington may get a chance to see the haunting glow of the northern lights early Monday because of electrical storms in the atmosphere, according to the National Weather Service.
While there's no guarantee of seeing the glow of the aurora borealis, the best time to get a glimpse of the sky show will be from midnight to 5 a.m. Monday, said Dennis D'Amico, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Seattle. The forecast for Seattle tonight is partly cloudy, but the sky is expected to clear after midnight.
Those who are in rural, dark areas with no clouds — such as the Lake Chelan area — have the best chance of seeing the lights, he said.
"There is a chance even if it's completely clear we wouldn't be able to see it," he said. It's rare for the northern lights to even be visible from Seattle's latitude, he said, so "if you can find yourself a prime viewing location, it would probably be worth giving it a shot."
Besides areas east of the Cascades and north of Seattle, those living in the Bremerton area might have a good seat to glimpse the aurora, D'Amico said.
Showers are expected to arrive Monday night.
