For those lucky enough to live in the Puget Sound Convergence Zone (basically, north King and south Snohomish counties), you might be in for a treat. Maybe.
EAST PUGET SOUND LOWLANDS-EVERETT AND VICINITY- SEATTLE/BREMERTON AREA- 515 PM PST TUE DEC 25 2007
...POTENTIAL CONVERGENCE ZONE SNOW PROBLEMS WEDNESDAY MORNING...
A COLD AND UNSTABLE AIR MASS WILL MOVE OVER WESTERN WASHINGTON OVERNIGHT WITH PLENTY OF MOISTURE TO WORK WITH. AS A RESULT...OCCASIONAL RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE OVER THE AREA THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. FOR MOST OF THE REGION...ANY SNOW SHOWERS ARE ONLY EXPECTED TO PRODUCE A LIGHT COATING OF SNOW AT BEST AND THEN MAINLY OVER HILLTOPS.
HOWEVER...THERE IS A POSSIBLE EXCEPTION TO THIS AS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR A PUGET SOUND CONVERGENCE ZONE TO FORM DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS. IF THIS FICKLE PHENOMENON DOES FORM OVERNIGHT IT COULD PRODUCE A PERIOD OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW RESULTING IN SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW ON THE GROUND FOR THE MORNING COMMUTE OVER A FAIRLY SMALL PART OF THE METRO REGION. THE AREA THAT COULD BE AFFECTED WOULD BE OVER KING COUNTY ROUGHLY NORTH OF A SHORELINE...KIRKLAND...CARNATION LINE AND SOUTHERN SNOHOMISH COUNTY SOUTH OF A SMOKEY POINT TO GRANITE FALLS LINE.
STAY TUNED FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND/OR UPDATED FORECASTS IF THIS SITUATION DOES DEVELOP OVERNIGHT.

SNOW ADVISORY:
...SNOW ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM TO 6 PM PST THURSDAY...
A SNOW ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE WESTERN WASHINGTON LOWLANDS FROM 6 AM TO 6 PM PST THURSDAY.
LIGHT SNOW WILL BEGIN THURSDAY MORNING ACROSS THE LOWLANDS. THE SNOW WILL DEVELOP FIRST OVER THE HOOD CANAL AREA AROUND 7 AM AND SPREAD EAST OVER THE REST OF THE AREA BY 10 AM. THE SNOW MIGHT BE MIXED WITH RAIN INITIALLY WITH MINIMAL ACCUMULATIONS.
HOWEVER...THE SNOW WILL INCREASE DURING THE AFTERNOON AND SHOULD BEGIN TO ACCUMULATE. SNOWFALL WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THE FRONT MOVES THROUGH IN THE EARLY EVENING...WHEN IT WILL CHANGE TO SCATTERED RAIN SHOWERS.
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS SHOULD GENERALLY RANGE FROM 1 TO 2 INCHES OVER MOST OF THE ADVISORY AREA WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS OVER THE HILLS. THE HOOD CANAL AREA WILL RECEIVE A BIT MORE WITH 2 TO 4 INCHES EXPECTED AND AGAIN POSSIBLY HIGHER AMOUNTS OVER HILLTOPS. AMOUNTS NEAR THE FOOTHILLS MAY BE A BIT LIGHTER DUE TO A DRYING DOWNSLOPE FLOW OFF THE CASCADES.
A SNOW ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.
-Looks like we are gonna some snow tomorrow. The moisture is there. I'm just worried that our temps won't get low enough to support the snow. So hopefully the will.

It can snow at upwards of 38 or 39-- and the temp drops anyway when the precip sucks up all the heat from the air. It's similar to how one of those big air conditioners with waterfalls works

I hate to say it but it appears that this event is going to be a bust for most if not all of us here in the lowlands as the air mass just above the surface is just a hair too warm.....
If you do get snow, feel lucky as new models indicate that the projected snowfall that was supposed to occur is now not going to happen at all.
however the Portland metro area and areas west of the city are currently being dumped on and i have a feeling that there snowfall is due to the easterly gradient through the Gorge.

I know you've heard this may times Mike 'yeah, but it's a dry heat' eh! Well I think much can be said about a 'damp chill' too. I agree that when it's 45° and humid here it sucks. When I lived in Idaho it could be 25° and dry and you can work all flip'n day it a sweat shirt. Recently when it got below freezing here I went outside and when it gets cold and clear the humidity drops way low and it was just like I remember. Ya, about 9:00 pm very light precipitation was moving over the Kitsap Peninsula. So light that very little reached the ground. Only some snow fell around this time over in Bremerton. The radar doesn't lie, but if it was as light as I think it was then probably didn't reach the ground. Well this was a nice surprise this morning. Spokane hit with largest snowfall in four years, more coming
The Associated Press
SPOKANE, Wash. — More snow was falling early Thursday following a record 24-hour snowfall for the metropolitan area, so much that city officials were seeing red.
A snow advisory was in effect for the area with 2 to 3 inches expected by midday Thursday, a day after officials declared a "condition red" snow emergency, ordering crews to keep plowing nonstop until snow is removed from the city's 967 miles of streets.
Road crews hoped to reach residential streets Friday "if no more snow falls," according to a city statement. Besides the snow falling Thursday, the National Weather Service warned of another round of heavy snow on Saturday.
The city had 35 pieces of snow equipment on the streets Wednesday, including 26 plows, three sanders, and six deicers. Spokane County, which has many more miles of road, deployed 96 snow plows, road graders and sanders, said Wayne Storey, road operations and maintenance superintendent.
Eastern Washington has been hit by a series of snowstorms that have boosted an already high avalanche danger in the mountains and snarled traffic in rural areas and smaller towns and cities this week.
The state's two principal east-west arteries, Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 2, were both closed early Thursday for avalanche control work near Snoqualmie and Stevens passes, respectively. I-90 was reopened east of Snoqualmie Pass after about a two-hour closure. U.S. 2 was closed for a longer period.
By Thursday night forecasters were expecting 30 inches of snow at 3,022-foot Snoqualmie Pass since Wednesday.
A record 5.4 inches of snow fell at Spokane International Airport in the 24 hours that ended at midnight Wednesday morning. That beat the previous record of 4.6 inches for the date recorded in 1909.
An additional 2 inches fell Wednesday morning at the airport for a total of about 7.4 inches, the most from a single storm since an 8.2-inch dump on Nov. 20, 2003.
"It was a very long duration snow for us," said Michael Fries, a local weather service forecaster.
Typical snowfalls in the last four to eight hours, but "this was more than twice as long," Fries said.
In records going back to 1881, the heaviest one-day snowfall in Spokane was 12.7 inches on Jan. 21, 1954.
The latest snow caused multiple school delays and closures Wednesday and lots of traffic woes.
"There are crashes everywhere," Washington State Patrol Trooper Jeffrey J. Sevigney said. "We have trees down on the road on State Route 291 ... we have multiple collisions on Interstate 90. Fortunately, we have had no reports of serious injuries."
Avista Utilities reported that about 1,281 customers were without power Wednesday morning after falling trees and debris fell into area power lines. Nearly all were restored by afternoon.
Many volunteer drivers for Meals on Wheels, which delivers food to about 500 residents 55 and older each week, were unable to operate their usual vehicles, Executive Director Mollie Dalpae said.
"We called everyone we know who had four-wheel-drives and trucks to help get the food out," Dalpae said.
Trucks delivering food to the nonprofit agency have twice been unable to make it over Snoqualmie Pass from Seattle because of foul weather, Dalpae said.
"We get a call in the early morning and have to prepare 500 frozen meals, which is great if (clients) have a microwave or ability to heat them up," she said.

Hey Guys.....
just wanted to give you guys a heads-up to a possible pattern shift for us here on the west side of the state....
I have been pouring over the models the last couple days and it would appear at this time that we could be in for a true Pac Nw Arctic Outbreak beginning sometime next week....
The main forecasting model that Mets like me use has been very consistent in showing this possibilty for the last 4 days and as of this morning at least 3 additinal models are picking up on this new scenario as well adding more cofidence to this very real possibility.
Keep in mind that this is only preliminary at this point and that anything can change.
Given the variables that could come into play with this particular scenario i would be very conservative in my forecast if i were to put one out at this point but i will go as far as saying that at this time it would appear that temps late next week will begin a downward trend and that early estimates would put high temps at only the low to mid 30's in the seattle area with outlying areas barely reaching the freezing mark for daytime highs.
Add to the fact that there could be several decent snow possibilities embedded in this scenario that at this time apears to continue for at least 2 weeks.
If this scenario were to become reality ( and at this point it looks like a 30% possibility ) this would not a be an event that would see marginal cold temps and borderline snow chances but an all out assault of prolonged cold temps and real lowland snow possibilities.
If i had to personally compare this " scenario " to anything in recent memory.... I would have to say that this is looking alot like the post X-mas event of 1996 in which all of W. Washington was plunged into very cold prolonged temps and lots of lowland snow.
Please - Please - Please.... Understand that at this point and time that this is nothing more than a heads-up and that anything can change but do stay tuned as i will be updating frequently as this possible scenario comes closer and to better view !!!!

I completely agree with you, thats why i said to take my post at face value until more information becomes available and that should and will happen as we get closer to said event !!!!
Side Note: it now looks like there will be a chance of snow late Monday night into early Tuesday morning as lows will be at or below freezing for everyone but the limiting factor will be that there won't be too much moisture left but if a PSCZ develops and beomes stationary then any area under it could easily get accumulating snow.

UPDATE :
Looking at the newest model runs from this morning i expect the following.
Today: Cold front offshore begins it eastward progression at a very fast pace thus due to a strong jet in the upper levels.
Moisture has already started to develop over the area and will increase as the afternoon progresses, it will also be very windy in the northern interior and along the coast with breezy to gusty in the central sound.
High temps for the day have already been reached and are now on the downward trend as cold front advances eastward.
Once the front passes, expect the precip. to become scattered and intermittent. ( would not be surprised to see hail or even brief snowflakes after frontal passage with the shower activity )
Behind the front is a very cold air mass that will entrench itself over the area starting late this afternoon and into the early evening hours, at the same time a PCSZ ( Puget Sound Converangce Zone ) will begin to develop and with the strong wind component i expect a band of precip to form and remain moderate to intense all the while changing the prcip to snow and allowing snow to accumulate from southern Skagit county down to as far as Tacoma as the PSCZ begins a gradual SE movement during the night and early morning hours.
At this point and time i would forecast snow for the areas mentioned above as well as northern Kitsap county and eastward along the foothills to see snow beginning around 9-10pm and lasting all the way through till about sunrise.
Temps late this evening in the central sound are expected to only be in the mid 30's by the evening commute and at or below freezing by midnight and below freezing in many areas afterwards. ( not Impossible for a Thunderstorm to pop up in this event either )
Here's the breakdown.
Snow potential:
Coastal Areas- Nothing to a Trace
North Sound ( Arlington North ) Nothing to Trace
Marysville Southward: 1-3 inches possible
Tacoma Southward: Trace to 1 inch possible
Central Sound ( Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland Etc. ) 1-3 inches possible
Those of you may remember last year during the Green Bay Vs Seattle game @ Qwest where it snowed real hard.......
Tonights event is very similar to that one and i would almost venture to say that it looks to be a ( very close ) Carbon Copy !!!!
Will Update this as needed throughout the day and evening.

So you are very right about the temps dropping, I just hope they will continue to drop over the next hour to ensure we have the right temps to support snow. Also I am skeptical about the PSCZ forming, but we will have to observe signs of it forming in the next few hours. As you said this could be a big event if everything does come to together. I'll try to check on what is going on later tonight to see if there are any more updates.

I am actually a Pro Meteorologist.
I received my Bachelor's in Atmospheric Sciences 5 years ago from UW.
I do not work for any official weather agency but i do have many inside tracks and connections within the Weather industry especially Locally.

Really? I'm starting to worry. The cold air isn't in place yet. But then again there is heavy snow being reported in Northgate.

It WILL only get colder as the evening progresses.

Here in Issaquah I've seen many cars with snow on their roofs, but it's not actually snowing here. Must be snowing on the Sammamish plateau, or something.
I'll believe the snow when I see it.

I'm back!
There's about an inch on the ground right now, and it's still coming down, but not very hard.
It's not particularly high quality snow - when I first went out it was really half ice - half snow, and now it's kinda wet snow. But I'll take what I can get.

I wouldn't get too excited about potential snow on Thursday as the low level moisture won't be too strong and the surface gradients are just too damn dry right now to really support any kind of moisture.....
However by the time we reach Saturday night/Sunday Morning Everyone in W. Washington could be seeing the potential for upwards of 4-6 inches of snow.....
Don't hold me to this right now as this is only what the Models are indicating as of this morning.....
There is also strong agreement that after this weekend we could stay in the freezer so to speak all the way through the first week of Feburary with on and off Snow Chances !!!!
